China’s Hostility Towards Foreigners: I Received Death Threats Online!!
There's always grass greener on the other side here and there. As a Chinese moved abroad I have to say reality is complicated. When I went back to China to meet up with friends and families I can feel everyone's busy. Guess education might be a bit different if you're teaching English as a native speaker. But in other areas people are genuinely busy all the time. Probably I have been in Australia for too long but the way I see it there're only 2 ways to earn a lot of money. Either you deliver the value by working extra hard or smart, or you exploit others. In China if you're really good engineer you can get paid 7 figures in USD. But prepare to do the 996 or even 007. Whether that's a worthy life depends on whom you ask. Also from big cities to remote areas things can change a lot. China does have plenty of variety. But personally I think the rule is universal. If you believe you're competitive and hard working, go to China for the opportunities and fulfil your dreams. Otherwise do good research on the place you want to be and the things you want to do there.
Yeah , I can agree and respect this. I understand. If I was a Chinese I wouldn’t be interested in working here due to the 996 schedule. Not much free time !
@viewpointabroad 996 is not necessarily an issue as long as one gets what he/she wants. What I'm trying to say is there's no free lunch in this world, at least not for the general public. The value China offers is mostly from the competitions. Just that high workload, high efficiency and high return might not be the thing for everyone. That said, many people I know are still in China, earning way more than I do and they're mostly Chinese.
Hi John.. Do you think you need to be outside china to get the best package for a teaching job? Or is it better to be there and apply? Many say you need to be outside china to apply?
No, most employers prefer those already in the country.
Thanks for making these videos, I have learned a lot of things about living in China I never knew.
Awesome. Thanks 🙏
Thanks!
Thanks for your support. Hope some of the information is helpful !
Just curious how much CCP paid you to promote your pro-China narrative? There is no freedom of speech, no freedom of expression, no freedom to make or watch the content you want. The government has a point system and they can block you from your own money, if you are not careful, or throw you in jail. If all you are interested in is shelter, food, and the weather, how are you different than a dog?
Sounds like you’ve never experienced living in China.
Odd, you kinda sound like a black dude from the hood.🤔
excellent video. I am planning on retiring in China and teaching. I am professional teacher in CA with Chinese wife. We already have a paid off home in Jingzhou city. Looking forward to it!!!!
Nice. Welcome back !
Great point about the king of Thailand! Better you don't tell anyone how good it is there man! Let them keep on believing the TELL-LIE-VISON Programming...peace.
but how much money do you get tho?
I do several things so it’s kinda not relevant as I only work about 16 hours and I do my own business the rest of the time as well as some stock trading etc etc ..
BEST place lol? In a commie country that monitors my every single move where I don't feel SAFE of my own privacy lol? A commie country with a social credit system that dictates what I can and can't do in a country heavily regulated lol? A commie country where every 10 minutes someone goes missing without warning lol? Lol, BYEE~! You can miss me with that as take.
I voted for Trump and I am hopeful he does good things for everyone, no matter who you voted for. I want him to be the President for all Americans, treat everyone equally. This time around more Black, Hispanic and even Muslim people voted for him and he has put together a really good cabinet and advisors. Somehow we have to get Republicans and Democrats to work together for the people, not just for their parties or for their own personal gain. I guess we will find out soon. I am like you in that it doesn't make that much difference who the President is, I have worked hard to make myself independent of politics and able to handle whatever comes along.
What amazes me about your videos is I have always heard China has so many people and how crowded it is, yet in most of your videos at times it almost looks deserted compared to US cities. I am guessing it all depends on what city you live and time of day ? I gotta say though, it is much much cleaner than any city here.
@@bills.1390 yeah , it greatly depends on location , city and time of day. If I film at at 7-8am you’ll see more people than you’ve ever seen in your life hahha it’s is pretty clean though.
11:20 Hi! I love listening to your story, but if you don't mind, how did you actually get out of that mess from being homeless in the Philippines to having enough money to return to the USA? I think it could potentially encourage and give hope to a lot of people if you could share that. Thanks! 🙏
@@codrin1862 it’s a long story I’d have to make a video about. Too long to talk about here in comments
You have no doubt heard the old saw, find a job you love and you will never have to work another day in your life, well my friend, I think you have found just that, you are where you should be.
Thanks 🙏
I am 76, live in California. I am a semi-retired aerospace engineer. I agree, I don't like the direction our country has taken. Personally, and I speak only for myself, it is not the same country it was when I grew up and now it is very polarized, essentially we are two countries. Even the state of California is an us or them situation and we are supposed to be the most chill place to live. Being an engineer I have always made decent money and never lacked for anything, but I see a lot of the younger engineers and programmers are struggling to buy homes and get their kids through school even though they all make 6 figure salaries.
@@bills.1390 yeah , I feel similar. It don’t feel like the place I grew up in at all. I’m happy here in Asia.
When you say it's two countries, do you mean the polarization between classes or do you mean a split between different states like in a pre-civil war scenario? There was even this new movie about such an event this year and being from Europe i can't figure out how realistic this is, if it's pure fiction or if a vast majority actually feels like splitting up from other states.
@@Egal0190 : Although there is a lot of talk about income inequality and chart after chart displayed on television showing such, even getting down to gaps for gender and race, it is not what divides us (yet). For some time now the USA has been divided by politics and what direction this country wants to take in the future, essentially conservative (Red) or Liberal (Blue). We have Red states and Blue states, Red cities and Blue cities. In the last election there were 32 Red states and 18 Blue states, however the actual number of votes are near 50% for both sides. I do not believe it will ever come to another civil war, but I am seeing states exercising their states rights in defiance of the central government, where that eventually leads is yet to be seen. It has split families, some have cut relationships altogether if they voted different from another, it has even resulted in violence, as you may have read there were two attempts on President Trumps life that we know of. Just a lot of stress here over it.
how about another youtuber called Serpentza, do you share same opinion with that guy?😀
@@yangliu5727 I don’t watch his videos anymore. I saw a few and they were all very negative and came across as pretty negative , douchey and pathetic. Not someone I’m interested in spending time watching
China isn't communist. It's socialist. Only government is communist.
I don’t want to say this, China is only good for Chinese people maybe they hired for sometimes for good salary then they lay you off.
Imagine getting annoyed at people for perpetuating stupid stereotypes about China, then going on to perpetuate stupid stereotypes about Thailand. You clearly don't understand defamation laws at all.
I am Chinese, and many people think that wages in China are very low. But the cost of living is also very low. Some Chinese people complain about their low wages because they bought a house and need to pay a lot of mortgage every month (cultural differences, because Chinese people think that buying their own house is the first thing in life). If you live in China, no Buy a house and your quality of life will be very good
好主意💡❤
Hey, John. Just wondering- how do you find jobs or how do you negotiate in interviews to receive year round pay? I haven't seen any job postings outside of universities (the pay is a bit low for my taste this early on in my career), or international schools (I don't have the experience or qualifications yet to apply) that offer full pay for the year. I would even take half pay, as the agency I'm currently with only pays us about 20% of our salary during the three months we are off. Thanks for any info or ideas you might have. As always, love the videos!
The best jobs are in wechat job groups. Don’t work for agency. The schools pay the agencies more and the agency keeps the money for providing the teacher. Contact schools directly
@@viewpointabroad hi John, how do you find these groups? I am fairly new to WeChat and actually had to get a Chinese friend in the UK to help me set up. I've got a BA in education and 8 years English teaching experience in Vietnam
@ just need to have friends invite you to the groups
h'es harldy going to say anything else, is he? If he doesn't want to be deported. No free speech
If you see my videos you’d know when there are bad things to say about China I say them!
✌✌✌
John, your experience sounds positive but I’m wondering if there any “slum” cities in China that feel unsafe to work / live?
@@garethl738 not that I’ve ever seen or experienced and I’ve traveled all over China !
There are some slums where poorer people live but it ain't America. No one in China is gonna rob you with a knife. And everyone is protected by surveillance cameras where bad people get caught same day. If ya don't like surveillance cameras then maybe you'll love the ones in London or NYC lol
Even what people considered slums in China are clean and safe.
@ in my 15 years here I’ve never once been anywhere in China where I felt unsafe even in the middle of the night.
With US$5,000 a month you live like a king in China. Surprise China is paying so high salary. In most of ASEAN teacher salary is about US$2,500. Per month
Depends on experience, qualifications and language ability , who you know etc.
Your smile is contagious.
😀
I hope you're a female saying that 😂
Agree 100%
There are only two true communist countries left in the world - North Korea & Cuba.
Yeah I can agree with that but many don’t seem to understand that mainly from lack of travel experience. People who assume things about these countries are mostly from people who haven’t left home before.
@viewpointabroad That says a lot on the education system.
Thank you for this very informative video
Priceless information about wages for teaching English in Asia ❤
How much Chinese did you speak before moving? I am a grad student earning. Master’s in Education. I have a BA in English. I am looking to take a job teaching English in China in 12-16 months. Are there any tips you have for someone like me? I also have experience teaching grades Tk-8.
0. I learned after I got here
Hiring season is May-July. After that all the good jobs are gone
@@viewpointabroad My goal is to pay for most of my degree and learn a new language. What is the work culture like? I would like to gain relevant experience and have references for possible future jobs in America. Are you a citizen of China? Can an American who moves to China have a fulfilling social life?
Is it possible to work part-time jobs around 30 hours weekly? I am also considering finishing my degree online while working in China. Job opportunities for graduate students are scarce and underpaid in America.
Where/how do you apply for jobs? I am also earning my TEFL. Thanks for reading. Sorry for spam, haha.
If you want to see some diversity while living in China is Shenzen the best place since you are close to Hong Kong.??. Otherwise it seems you will be in places with all Chinese people..
Yeah pretty accurate
It's a hassle to go to and from hk. I think shanghai has more foreigners than shenzhen

Actually is true.. But china ( chinese ) dont really understand / know what the rest of countries now. Really crazy and expensive. Hopefully they will appreciate at least their taxes still goes back to them. ( infrastructure and education / welfare)
I am soooooooo pissed off that 🇮🇳 was on the list
India has great food. Some of my favorite but I’ve never been to India so I can’t compare
woa dude, saving 3-4k a month, that's insane, most average American don't even have 3-4k savings. Per year we are looking at 40K USD savings.
Yeah , gives you more options for a better future
Housing cost is usually the biggest expense and my 2br 78sqm apt is 3000rmb (less than $500) so you can save a lot in China. Meanwhile I'm charging $1800 for each of my tenants in NJ lol
Yes ! This is what makes it special
China best place to work? U.S mainstream medias call it you being force labor in China and Chinese kids education call it force labors also.
I said best place to work for foreigners in education. If you watched the video, I wasn’t referring to locals. Good try though 😝
@@viewpointabroad I think he's being sarcastic 😁
@@viewpointabroad for the locals, depends on your education and experience. I know a local who was making $300k per yr in USA but he missed China too much so he came back with a different job paying $160k but still that's a king salary. PhD guy.
Anything over 50-60k usd a year in China you’re not wanting for anything and life is good. Anything more than that you can really do anything
in America most people are wage slaves - fact!
I am Chinese and not working in education, but I agree with you especially you are a foreign teacher since we have the culture to treat friends from far away places nicely.
Yeah as far as local Chinese go I don’t believe China is best because yall have some different expectations from local people but as a foreigner China is really a good place to work.

It’s definitely not impossible, I have many friends over 40 including myself who are working here and are getting offers here. The problem with the education sector is that many of the native English speakers left China due to pandemic situation and didn’t return due to some of the geopolitical tensions etc ..also many new regulations on schools when it comes to foreign education. There is a lack of foreign educators in China and it’s kinda forcing schools to take lesser qualified teachers and many of the best teachers are at the best schools leaving other schools left with mediocre or low quality teachers. I feel China is slowly moving away from foreign education , but I do believe there will always be at least some level of foreign education at the top tier schools.
I totally agree with you and I didn't even watch your video yet.
i agree with you and i haven't even read your comment yet.
The most important thing is to learn Chinese first. If it’s not about teaching, you need to start learning the language first. Personally, I’ve received more than seven job offers as a sales manager. But there’s always the same problem when it comes to the Chinese employers-they just tell me, “Even though your work will be with foreigners and in English, you still need to know Chinese because everyone in the office is Chinese.” So... tomorrow I have another interview. I’ll see how it goes again, hahaha! My Chinese is better now
Problem with non education jobs in China is you needs to work a lot more with less holidays.
Very good advice 我们需要学习汉语❤❤❤❤
@@SVmathfarmer 我们学习汉语
Do they mainly speak mandarin there as in guangdong province trying to learn Mandarin is extremely difficult for me when my wife is constantly speaking Cantonese among her friends
Really depends where you are in Guangdong. Usually local Cantonese will always speak Cantonese with each other but due to a lot of migrant workers from other places living in Guangdong they more often use mandarin in scenarios you’ll come across daily at restaurants and shopping etc … they will just use Cantonese among themselves.
Do you have a US teaching license or just a TESOL? I'm studying Law and heading out to China to teach, wondering if it's worth doing a PGCE first or is it not strictly necessary? Since Ben Teaches English disappeared, yours is the best channel on teaching abroad.
It’s not necessary to legally work here but it will make you more desirable by employers and a bit of a pay increase but not a lot.
@@viewpointabroad Most lawyers in the UK make £30k a year, which I'm already on working nights as a band 3 nurse in A&E whereas you can save 30k a year in China so I believe? Plus, it's 60 hour weeks for your 30k over here and our utilities alone are the most expensive in the world. Can't wait to blow the dump.
I lived in Shenzhen between 2010 - 2014 and honestly at that time I didn’t like it and unfortunately it tarnished my whole view on the country. Fast forward to 2024 and I’m back with my wife and can’t believe how much life here has improved. The rent prices haven’t moved and compared to the UK and even south east Asia they are super affordable. Planning on selling up in the UK and moving back
I’ve been here since 2010 but haven’t left , but I do agree since those days China has gradually became better and better year after year
I've been debating for awhile, and it's mostly because I'm taking care of my folks. I grew up in Canada but I can speak elementary Cantonese, can't read and write in Chinese, also have no experience teaching a class. Would like to try this in the near future, I've even seen a posting on LinkedIn.
Well ya know, they'd rather hire a non Asian looking face with bad English before they think about hiring you. Even black people are prefered over Asian faces for teaching English lol
Do a TEFL/TESOL/TESL (all basically the same) program at your local Canadian uni. Hopefully you have a BA degree at least. You can also get an overseas Chinese visa I bet b/c of your parents....just go fot it dude! peace.
You live in a city which is famous for good food .
Yeah
Which city is that? Sorry but Guangzhou has the best food
Great content as usual. Just curious, what's the lowest salary you think I should expect if I teach there? I have a degree, masters (business) and am just finishing a 200 hour TEFL. I have experience giving private tuition in a few subjects, too, tho no actual prior teaching.
Partly depends on nationality , if you have the above mentioned qualifications and are a native English speaker with a passport from one of the native English speaking countries then you can expect to get minimum 20,000¥ maximum 28,000¥. You’ll need more experience and qualifications to earn more and a bit of luck
@@viewpointabroadI know a German young lady who was teaching biology in English in shunde guangdong. Yeah her salary was around 25k rmb... She says she can make more money in China than she can back in Germany lol
Unfortunately, you need a degree now to get an English teaching job in China lol or I would do it.. but I will have to say I completely agree with you, since I have zero experience in the subject.. but what I will say about what I have heard is that those poor Chinese kids work to death.. they got homework until like 11 o’clock at night at seven years old that’s kind of messed up I think and they have an extreme amount of pressure.. I find the homework culture to be extremely toxic.. I understand 30 to 45 minutes worth but these kids doing 23 hours every night is nonsense.. also, I wish you had mentioned something about the salaries comparatively.. like what’s a low salary, average salary and salary in China so people can understand.. I know you mentioned that your living expenses are only 1250.. but I’m just curious what is the different income ranges in China?.. like lower class, middle class upper middle class upper class ect .. as always great brother
You’re not wrong , they study hard here til all hours of the night and on weekends living little time for childhood fun. They even have weekend classes and many are living in boarding schools and only see their families a few hours a week.
As far as salary range not sure if you’re referring to locals or foreigners
@@viewpointabroad locals
A lot of this is cultural. The importance of education is ingrained in the culture. Other East Asian countries including Japan and Korea share a very similar value system. Anyone unfamiliar with the culture wouldn't understand. Siimilarly, there's something parallel in the United States, just not in academics - it's in organized sports. It's a PRIORITY in many families and lots of parents are FANATICAL about putting their kids in sports. They spend LOTS of time and TONS of money on gear, training, coaching, club teams, travel, therapists.......... Some families even hold their kids back in school or repeat a grade just to gain a competitive advantage. These are choices unfathomable to people in the Far East. I'm sure there is an East Asian parent out there somewhere thinking "those poor American kids."
Sad life as youngsters. If I have kids they will learn about money, how to invest and use money to make money, like Warren buffet. These educated kids will grow up to be "working" for the investors class lol
Im in Vietnam, get paid $1200 working for an agency that places you in Schools and you dont really have sovereignty being employed by these people, you definitely talking about me, After 3 years here I quit. China in my onion is generally the best place or the best bang for your buck. Man I sure do miss it there.
No freedom and it is as if they completely own your whole life huh.
Maybe Singapore will work better for ya
Only thing about Singapore is too dang expensive
Not for me , but for them it’s a different story
@@0animalproductworld558 honestly, to an extent, you get paid bare minimum so you just have to work and work and your lives starts to just revolve around that, dont get me wrong, I did travel through Vietnam before I started living here, but these two things: living and traveling through here have a huge contrast. Loved traveling here, but working here is terrible. Singapore is wayyyy out of my budget mate!
He’s such a cool guy.
Thanks 🙏. Just sharing my experience
