Whatever Happened to RMC Topper Track? (Episode 9)
In this installment of the series Whatever Happened To? I discuss the ground-up RMC Topper Track coasters and why I think they experienced an initial surge in popularity, why they died off and whether I think we could be seeing more installations in the future.

    Thanks for posting this. I worked Rolling Thunder at Six Flags Great America for its first year (1989? I think? it's been awhile), and was a crew lead by the end of the summer, so it's weirdly the "coaster" I've ridden more than any other on the planet just because of the requirement for frequent test rides. That was the ride's first year with the new sleds that sat 2 riders abreast in 4 rows, with proper individual lap bars. So, we had to figure out the procedures for it early in the season. If memory serves, we'd run 2 or 3 sleds on the track simultaneously depending on the line wait; so, 8-12 riders on the track at any given moment, advancing by 8 every 45 seconds or so. That's a peak of 640 riders per hour, so, not a particularly fast line by any means; any regular train-style coaster could easily double that. By the time the ride was at the end of its life at Great Adventure as Alpine Bobsled, I've heard they only had one sled running, and left the back seat empty. That line must have been INSANELY slow. They may have been having servicing issues as well - it looks in shockingly bad shape in several videos here on RUclips compared to when I worked it, and apparently rain took the ride down for DAYS waiting for the water to drain and evaporate. So, the drains weren't working properly anymore. We were generally cycling empties 15-20 minutes after the rain stopped to dry out the track; the lead would hop on (last row was required, with a second crew member, so that thing really slewed around in the turns on a damp track), and if we felt it was safe for little Timmy, we'd check with a supervisor and put the ride back up immediately. We could almost keep up with the regular steel coasters in terms of rain recovery time. I can't remember us being down for a whole day on ANY day that summer. So hearing that the thing hardly ran at all at Great Adventure by the end is disappointing. We were neighbors with the two oldest coasters in the park - Whizzer, which is the last Schwarzkopf Speedracer in the USA and one of only two remaining on the planet (motorized trains with onboard braking and a spiral lift - think a lot of speedy banks and twists), and Demon (by modern standards, a smallish Arrow looper). Both rides are still there today, and date from when the park opened in '76, although Demon's configuration was drastically changed in 1980 (and it was re-themed and renamed). Those three rides clustered together kind of made sense, as they were effectively the "family" coasters at the park. Between the three of them, you had a great variety of types, and also a natural progression so kids could work up to their first looping coaster alongside Dad or Mom. They pulled the ride after several years to use its real estate - it took up about half of what's now a new Southwest-themed area of the park, which includes several flat rides, originally had a Western stunt show, and links to a wooden coaster that was built a year earlier. So it was probably a good move for the park overall. But I admit I miss that thing. It could really whang you around in the three brake runs - it helped to have young bones - but it was unique.

    Well since you uploaded this video, in the last few years 8 more roller coaster became national historic landmarks from American Coaster Enthusiasts. Those 8 coasters are Thunderhawk at Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom in Allentown Pennsylvania, Comet at Hersheypark in Hershey Pennsylvania, Blue Streak at Cedar Point in Sandusky Ohio, Sea Dragon at Columbus Zoo and Aquarium in Powell Ohio, Rutschebanen at Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen Denmark Big Dipper and Grand National at Blackpool Pleasure Beach in England and Tornado at Adventureland in Altoona Iowa.

    I grew up in Lake George NY so the Great Escape was where I spent the majority of a few summers as a teenager. The Alpine Bobsled was an alright ride, they are definitely very Shakey when coming into the metal alignment tracks after almost every corner. The only other bad thing I would say and this could be on the park is the ride was constantly down and rarely was it ever opened. Like I said I had season passes at least 3 summers probably closer to 5 and while I could not even count how many times I rode other coasters in the park, the Bobsled I think I rode a total of 4 or 5 times ever. It was very popular and the line was always long as well, but that is expected with popular attractions. I love the Comet which is the old school wooden coaster in the back of the park... So many memories. What I would give to be young again!!! Was an amazing place to grow up.

    I rode this coaster last month. It costs seventeen dollars to ride it ordinarily, but I used a Groupon to ride twice for just twenty dollars. It was a great deal and it was totally worth it because of how long it was, how quickly it goes through the forest on the hillside, and being in control of the speed of the ride makes it almost as thrilling as a regular roller coaster. But to be honest, I actually refer the Goat Coaster just down the road. That one is shorter, but only by a few seconds, and that one actually felt faster, and there were a few moments where it felt like the car was going to go right off the track even though it wasn't.

  • @mitchellries256
    @mitchellries256 Год назад

    This is easily my favorite GCI roller coaster. When I rode it last month, it incredibly smooth. It was amazing to me how smooth that ride was considering how it wasn't an RMC Topper Track ride or an Intamin Prefabricated ride.

  • @mitchellries256
    @mitchellries256 Год назад

    This is my second favorite Arrow Looper behind Loch Ness Monster at Busch Gardens Williamsburg. What keeps this ride from being the first, despite being so fast and smooth, is that it's over rather quickly, and it's not something I can ride multiple times in a row because of how intense it is.

  • @mitchellries256
    @mitchellries256 Год назад

    It's definitely one of the most unique roller coasters that I've personally ridden because of its theming throughout the course, and it's backwards launch two thirds through the course. I just don't get why the line is so long as it does operate with multiple trains. Thankfully, it broke down later in the day, so it was a walk on for me when it reopened.

  • @mitchellries256
    @mitchellries256 Год назад

    After visiting for the first time last month, my favorite ride there is Lightning Rod, followed by Big Bear Mountain, Thunderhead, Wild Eagle, Firechaser Express, Tennessee Tornado, Daredevil Falls, Smoky Mountain River Rampage, Dragonflier, Dollywood Express, Blazing Fury, and Mystery Mine.

  • @mitchellries256
    @mitchellries256 Год назад

    The layout might not be anything special, but the setting of this ride in the hill and the views of the surrounding area from the top of the hill and everywhere else makes up for that.

  • @mitchellries256
    @mitchellries256 Год назад

    I went on this because I heard it was one of the better Vekoma Family Inverts out there, and it definitely felt like it was. Although, the line waa an hour long wait, so I would only do this if it was early and the line was short or I would just skip it entirely.

  • @mitchellries256
    @mitchellries256 Год назад

    I think the first half of the ride is mediocre, and there are a few rough spots in areas where you would least expect it. But I would still ride this on every visits because of cool theming, and the two inversions at the end of the ride.

  • @mitchellries256
    @mitchellries256 Год назад

    Is Lightning Rod at Dollywood still considered a wooden roller coaster? Because if it isn't, then this is my favorite wooden roller coaster anywhere. But if it is, then it's a toss up.

  • @mitchellries256
    @mitchellries256 Год назад

    Sadly, this ride was closed during my visit last month. If I had to guess, it probably would've been my least favorite of the three wooden coasters at the park, but still one of my favorites overall. Oh well. All the more reason to go back some day.
