Mostly stuff I get up to outdoors and my training. Trail running, ultra marathons, outdoor swimming and wild camping.
Running the High Moor Link | 23 miles on Dartmoor
I ran the High Moor Link on Dartmoor for one of my long training runs for the Arc of Attrition. I had the pleasure of Lauren and Laura's company for the first half of the route and then battled the wind for the second half.

Arc of Attrition Training Run | Lands End to Zennor Recce
Просмотров 4,2 тыс.10 месяцев назад
Dan and I headed to Lands End so that he could do Parkrun there and I could do another recce for Mudcrew's Arc of Attrition 100-mile ultra marathon. This is not official route guidance but I'll show you some of the route, some of my kit and eating strategies, as well as a quick recap of the Fairy Tale of Newquay ultra I did a few weeks ago.
Arc training run: Penzance to Lands End

Join me on my run from Penzance to Lands End (although technically I finished at Sennen). If you're doing the Arc of Attrition, this isn't official route guidance, make sure you check the event website for that, but I hope to give you an idea of the terrain to expect. It also gives you an opportunity to see the route in daylight if you don't have a chance to see it for yourself before race day!
Race the Light - beautiful winter trail half marathon along the Erme Estuary
Просмотров 55011 месяцев назад
As part of my Arc of Attrition training, I'm doing a couple of local trail races to make training a bit more interesting and sociable. Some friends and I did OuterEdge Event's: Race the Light along the Erme Estuary in South Devon. We we treated to plenty of mud and beautiful views. They have plenty of other brilliant events on offer throughout the year: outeredge-events.com/race-the-light/

I couldn't stay away and am signed up for Mudcrew's Arc of Attrition 100-mile winter ultramarathon again. This short video captures some of my recce from Coverack to Lizard so you can see what the course looks like and some of the kit I'll be using/not using.
Through the Darkness Ultra 2023
Просмотров 402Год назад
On the 1st July, on an almost full moon, I took part in the inaugural Through the Darkness event: a looped event where participants aim to complete as many 12k/7.5mile loops as they can during the 12-hour time limit. The race can be completed solo or as part of a team. The catch is, it's through the night! This was an amazingly inclusive event, directed by none other than my dear friend Jenny, ...
Run chat: Sports Psychology for Runners
Просмотров 578Год назад
This one is a bit different from my previous videos...just imagine you're out on a run with us :) Last week, I caught up with my friend Pille, who is a researcher and trainee sports psychologist, to talk about psychological strategies for running while we ran through the beautiful Plym Valley. We talked about chunking, self-talk, imagery, spectator/crew encouragement and why it might be useful ...
Running the West Devon Way-37 miles in the pouring rain
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.Год назад
On New Year's Eve I ran the 37-mile West Devon Way, from Okehampton to Plymouth, to test out my kit in the pouring rain before the Arc of Attrition 100-miler. Apologies for the ropey audio in the intro but it's better after that. It turns out that rain interferes with the microphone! I probably need to treat myself to a media mod for my GoPro 😊 Thanks for watching!
Arc of Attrition 2023 Race Report - My first 100 miler
Просмотров 5 тыс.Год назад
I wasn't brave enough to take my camera with me for the race so here's a race report instead 😊 It was my first go at a 100-miler and my first race report. The Arc of Attrition is a 100-mile ultramarathon that takes place in January on the Cornish coast path in the UK. In this video I share a few reflections on kit and nutrition as well as some highs and lows of the race. If you would like a mor...

Here's the last of my recce runs on the SouthWest Coast path before the 2023 Arc of Attrition 100-mile winter ultramarathon. Lauren and I had great fun splashing and sliding about in mud and we met some Arc of Attrition family out on the trail too.

Thanks for a great video. I am currently in training for the 50 mile Arc 2025 so I shall be studying your recce videos in detail over the next few weeks! Sub-30 is a great achievement - well done.
Loving your videos. My wife signed up for this one on the back of your video and is using it as arc training for 2026.
I've been a daily year-round day/night outdoor short-swim junkie skinny-dipper for decades. Sea, swim-pools, streams. It's easily the best(and cheapest!) way to instantly lower your blood pressure etc and can instantly transform you from feeling mega-tired and toxic into a high-energy athlete for 4-8 hours or so. It's my essential and addictive way to - among other things - combat type 2 diabetes and to instantly rejuvenate drug-free - apart from the occasional aspirin.. Cold water's best - and shivering for a minute or so is proven to be very good for you - not just for your skin. But I do have to warm/heat up before and after with 10-30 minutes of jogging, fast walking and some simple upper-body exercises - press-ups and various exercises using stretch-bands - all with 3-4 layers of mostly light upper-body "sauna-effect" clothing. Oh yeah - I'm also a 'crazy' backwards or retro walker/jogger' - especially up STEEP slopes... Try it a few times - and ignore those staring onlookers who think you're totally wacko... Paul G
Brilliant looking route, do you have a GPX file available please
thank you
I am so inspired... I will do this next year...
We do it differently: Both K1 next to each other in the same direction. I use my paddle as a bridge between the rear cockpit rim of the other boat and the front cockpit tip of my boat. Then the other paddler can push himself up between the boats. This is from my experience even very very stable and safe.
Very helpful!! Tysm ✨
Beautiful. But, honestly, can everyone who can sit in proper K1 and do a sculling draw with one hand and a wing paddle put their hand up? The rescuer is real class.
No Arc 2024 video on utube ? All ok ?
Looks fun
Well done ❤
Are you doing the Arc 100 again in 2025 Elana..? Thought you'd be posting an amazing vlog of 2024, I'm signed up for 2025 🇮🇪 best of luck again
I can barely keep my boat upright if i try doing this ill end up flipping 😂 make sure you all use a life jacket if paddling alone or in a area where you can’t swim to shore or dock in case you take a swim!
Very smart and clever preparation. 0ver the years I've watched hundreds of ultra prep videos, and this is one of the best. Congratulations on your brilliant performance!
Thanks so much John, really lovely of you to say. 😊
You have a natural gift for making these videos. Interesting, bags of atmosphere, the sights and sounds of nature and not too much music. Thank you :)
Thanks so much for your kind words. Really glad you liked it 😊
Extremely helpful race report. Thank you so much for sharing. Huge congratulations on your amazing achievement!
Glad it was helpful! I need to get this year's report out soon! :D Thanks for watching!
6th? 6th? 6th?!!!! OH MY GOD!!!! WOW! 😲 dot watching and wishing the best but my god, that was epic!!!! Hope you enjoyed it as much as your finish position and time dictates that you did! Rest, fuel and revel in what can only be described as one hell of a race! Huge well done 🤩🤩 x
Thanks so much for following along! It’s been so lovely to find that people have been following and cheering along 😊
@@elenaoutdoors absolutely! Husband first found you and said i'd enjoy the content as it seemed like my kind of thing and I'm so glad he did as I do! :) really so very pleased for you and your ARC finish, were you hoping to finish so high up the field? x
Ps swelling in hands quite common under exertion/cold. Apparently because the circulation reduces and therefore fluid accumulates rather than flowing back through the veins. Like people with heart or other probs having puffy ankles etc.
Ahh interesting, thanks for sharing!
Finally got round to viewing this. Well worth the wait. 👍You really have nailed making these, well shot and edited plus you have a great engaging but slightly laid back persona. Many people who do these kind of vid have varying degress of rectal auto insertion syndrome. PS do a North to South sometime. GOOD LUCK WITH THAT ARC THING!
Thanks so much Jonathan, you’ve been so kind with your support and encouragement. North to South on Dartmoor you mean? I need to get planning 😀
Those trails are so technical!! i had no idea the route was that hard to run. Ive looked at other folks doing this race but now i have even more respect for you guys that attempt that race!!
Yeah there are some really technical bits but I quite enjoy it as it keeps my mind occupied 😀Thanks for watching!
So appreciate the motivation your videos bring! Thanks and happy Arc of Attrition 👏🏼
Thank you so much, glad they’re giving you some motivation 😀
lovely lovely lovely!! 😍 I love how you managed to coax the horsies and goat out of the way of the gate. I do hope you found some lovely branches for them? Best of luck for this weekend, I hope you have an absolute blast, you've certainly done the training for it. x
Thank you Nic! I’m really looking forward to it now 😊we got the goat 🐐 to move with a handful of leaves in the end 😂I love these little encounters on trail runs ☺️
@@elenaoutdoors I hope the weather stays kind for you too, I know how brutal ARC can be based on the previous years i've watched live stream. You go and get that buckle!! 🧡
Do you have a link for the route in local to there and not heard of it before
It’s described in a few places: Dartmoorway.co.uk has it, Long Distance Walking Association has it, as well as the gpx (highly recommend joining them as you can get loads of routes from them) and it’s here too hiiker.app/trails/england/devon/dartmoor-way-high-moor-link
Amazing thankyou! Been looking for a good long trail been running mount edgcumbe to Downderry has been getting tedious, lovely views though!
Great video. Just starting to get into trail running and videos like this are great inspiration! Top marks for video editing and choice of music playing in the right spots.
Ah thanks for the kind words! Great that you’re getting into trail running! Have you got some nice trails nearby?
Yes thanks, I live next to the New Forest so lots of outstanding trails and terrain.
Fantastic. Such a bleak place dartmoor... I've never seen so much muck either 😮 and the hail 💪... a great watch Merky ☘️
Yeah it really can be! Thanks for watching 😊
@@elenaoutdoors no videos since your Arc 100 :) ..do you intend to do a post race chat. I need to get more tips :) and do miss your regular videos on your channel ...
@@merkyw4187 Yes, definitely want to put up a race report video. Had two failed attempts with technology, hence the delay 😭
@@elenaoutdoors looking forward to it :)
What perfect weather for an Arc training run. Dartmoor is bleak and awesome 💪 thank you for sharing your run
It really was excellent training! Thanks for watching 😀
Hi Elena, remembering my military days, our hands would swell up when wearing heavy packs for a long time too. Presumably effecting blood flow to the hands. Lifting the shoulder straps occasionally would ease this. Good luck on the AoA. I'm attempting the 50.
Oh interesting, I must remember that! Thanks and good luck to you too 😀
Awesome soggy run 👏
Yep, very soggy 😂thanks for watching!
Brilliant video 🤩 I've ran the Abbots Way twice and your video brought back some fantastic memories of the route. Loved watching that Elena 😁
Thanks Graeme! Really enjoyed the route, looking forward to doing more on Dartmoor!
That was a run and a half Elena! I've done the CSW Dartmoor in a Day race from Okehampton to Ivybridge 3 times. Last year it was on the hottest day of the year and it was still like a sponge on the top! 😂 I've decided that I'll give Arc a crack, even though training hasn't gone that well. See you there. 👍
Great news about the Arc 😀See you there!
Cracking training run in preparation for the Arc, good luck this weekend, hopefully you have missed the really bad weather 💪👍
Thanks 😀I hope we’ve missed it too 😬but will that just mean I have to go back and do it again to really get the full Arc experience? 😂
@@elenaoutdoorsI need a head torch can you tell me what you use please 🔦
@@coops111s I now have two: The Petzl Nao+ (old version) and a Fenix HM65R-DT. Loyd Purvis from Run4Adventure on youtube has done some head torch reviews so would recommend checking out his channel for more details 🙂
@@elenaoutdoors thanks I will check his channel, have a cracking run and maybe 1st lady this time 💪👍
Love this, Dartmoor is amazing! And brutal 😳😅 I can highly recommend the Dartmoor Way 100 miler in November if you fancy the challenge!
Oooh yes, that’s on my bucket list 😀Thanks for watching! 😀
Brutal day out. We call that character building weather at work. 👏
Yep, definitely character building 😂thanks for watching 😊
Awesome to hear the chat and the river looks stunning! (amazing effort!)
Thanks for watching 😊we feel very grateful to get to run around here!
@@elenaoutdoors yeah feeling gratitude is always the best!
Like 10 nice to see you again
Thanks for watching 😊
Brilliant video, Elena. Gives a good idea of the terrain to expect. Great tips too, especially about the elastic in the gloves and unwrapping food to put in a ziplock bag 👌 Thanks for sharing 🙏
Thanks Kate, glad it was helpful! 😀
Great video thanks :)
Glad you liked it, thanks for watching 😀
Brilliant Elena. Your videos have been very helpful, particularly this one. I got lost last year at mousehole and wasted so much time there. This in the end peed me off so much why i couldn't find that little alley and it just got to me until the minack theatre. I dont have crew and live too far away to recce it unfortunately so this will help big time. Glad you loved the race and are back again this year. See you on the start line. 3rd attempt for me, but feeling a lot more confident this year. I have done lots of 100's and should have nailed this race but like you said in last years video....anything can happen in 100 milers and with me it normally does 😅
Really glad the videos have been helpful! You’ve got this!! 💪🏻💪🏻see you there 😀
Another great video. We love that coast….so much that we are moving to live in Sennen this month!
Oh wow, what a beautiful place to live! 😀
Good luck Eleanor!
Thanks Claire! And good luck to you too for Arc 50 😀🍀💪🏻
And I thought you just went out and ran hundreds of miles just like that :) right I'm off to the gym to do more strength n conditioning:)
I reckon my body would literally fall apart without the S&C 😂But yes, whether it’s in the gym or whatever you can fit in at home, I think it’s well worth it 😊
Loved the series last year Elena and this year has been just great too. Looking forward to another period in front of the computer dot watching you guys inspire so many. Quick question, any major changes to foot care, socks, shoes etc.. compared to what, by all accounts was a positive experience last year? All the very best for the race, take care out there.
Thanks so much for watching and for your support! Makes a big difference knowing people are dot-watching 😀I’m making a few changes following lessons from last year + things I’ve learned since. Main thing will be starting in wider shoes and using trench cream. Aiming to get a video out soon about my kit and nutrition so will cover other changes in that too 😀
Very impressive, I wish I could get myself down the gym, good luck on the Arc 👍
I love the gym once I’m there and I still find it hard to get down there sometimes. Thanks for the luck 😀
Great to see runners talking about their s&c work, thank you.
I wouldn’t be without it now 😀
Looks like a great workout, do you mind sharing the details of your strength and conditioning coach?
Her name is Steph Morris, based in Cardiff. I’m catching up with her this weekend so will ask her how best to get in touch 😊
Wow you're really crushing it. Strength and conditioning is definitely the way to go to prevent or reduce injuries.
Thank you! Yes and it has so many other benefits too! 😀
Thanks for this Elena. Have not run this section of the coast before and this will be of great value when running the Classic Quarter in a few months. The colours of the sea around this section are something else, and for wild life, I remember seeing basking sharks whilst watching James and the Giant Peach at the Minack theatre. Great times!
Thanks for watching and enjoy the Classic Quarter! It’s a great race 😀That must have been pretty magical watching the basking sharks at the Minack!
Great tip Elena, sounds daft but I used to always forget to eat on a long run 😅
Not daft at all! It’s why I need a reminder 😂
Great video. I love that coast. Thanks a lot. Best of luck on the ARC 👍🍷
Thank you! And thanks for watching 😀
