PART 3 - Trumpeter KING TIGER 2 in 1/16th scale - kit BUILD pt3
Part 3 has finally arrived and not a moment too soon! Dang Trumpeter kit is taking it's toll on me! A very complex build hampered by "loose" instructions and parts that don't quite fit...but, it's coming along!
Got the Turret Basket for the most part, completed, and am SO ready to get to the outside of this behemoth kit, that I almost can't think straight! But, I have put in some good time, and have something to show for it.
Modelers please note, I got this kit to simply have a nice 1/16 scale King Tiger to go with my 21st Century "toys" my Tiger I and Panther G, and if I had known what a labor intensive build this would be, I might have instead acquired a 1/16 RC Tiger instead. I coulda r...

The Trumpeter 16th Scale King Tiger tank model comes in a BIG box! Let that be the first thing said! So big, it has taken me days to just get to where I am, section 11 of 45 in the huge instruction manual! This is gonna be a long build! ALICE in Wonderland - 3D model Built & Painted!
Просмотров 437Месяц назад
Another interesting 3D kit! This one, in a smaller 1/12 or so size, is a nice Alice in Wonderland sculpt that has a lot of fun, weightless style to it! Looks to be based slightly on J. Had to grab this great looking figure from McFarlane, their interpretation of the 1939 First Appearance Batman from Detective Comics 27! I've seen others that have come close, or are more of an idealized version of "Bruce", but this is the most screen-accurate I've seen, and the color and paint job is amazing! One quibble is that the protruding bottom gum looks a little too "meaty" or pronounced to my eye.

    • @LesWalker2023
      @LesWalker2023 7 часов назад

      I agree to a point. I too almost wanted to trim down the lower "chin" a bit, but then I saw a clip from the movie and one of the Bruces did have a slightly pronounced chin. So, I left it. It does work better when it is more open, as the kit came, and you don't notice it as much. But, since I closed the mouth just a bit from the kit, I guess that stands out. Still, thanks so much for the kind words and I appreciate the accuracy comment a bunch. Thanks!

Just today I spent ALL DAY just on the two hatches on front top, the driver and mgunner and that took a while, since I want to make the upper panel removable. And other parts. I so want to just glue this hull together and get to the FUN stuff! The turret! I will soon. Anyway, it is fun. I recommend it totally! Once you start, you can't stop! lol!

      Wow! So honored by your kind words! As someone there in Europe, you may have a totally different take on this machine, one that may have rolled the local streets during the war...so thanks and know I am a big student of History, first and foremost, and accuracy, and so want this "grail" of a project to come off just right. I built models of this and other tanks as a kid, but now, with this behemoth of a kit, I feel more responsible to make it mean something. Not sure why. You credited the sub designer and Disney on that plate, which is a kind attention yes, but could have done the same with the book writer imho. As far as I remember neither of them wrote that book, Jules Verne did. His name doesn't appear on your little diorama which is a "missed opportunity" for the least.

    • @LesWalker2023
      @LesWalker2023 23 дня назад

      Good point! However, I love the design of the movie submarine, which was not the same design as in the book, and figuring that most people are aware that Verne wrote the book (it is well documented) I just assumed most people would get that part of the credit. Verne did not design THIS version of the Nautilus, Harper Goff did. However, should I ever do a more Verne-centric model of the submarine, I will for sure have his name prominent on the plaque and give proper credit where it is due.

      I haven't taken enough of the figures apart to know what different lengths there may be, but there certainly are, as I have seen videos where someone takes shorter ones and uses them. I simply haven't found out yet. That would make a nice online service for customizing folks though, a site where they show parts and from what. Anyway, that's why I chose to shorten the one that came with the figure. It was easier and accessible for me that way.

    Fantastic work Les!! The paint work is spot on. Congratulations on getting your grail, as I never knew this was out there. Never seen a model of the shark with the workings from the film. 😊

    The bast part ... you placed the fins flat like a jet plane. The JAWS shark pec fins lay flat. They don't hang like a real sharks pecs

    Well Sir, that looks absolutely beautiful! I am overwhelmed by the build and the paint work. How did you get that smooth shift from the dark to the white on the body? It looks amazing!

    • @LesWalker2023

      Well, I don't use an airbrush, so I used a hand painting technique I actually read about in some of the JAWS production books, regarding unsung art staff/production hero Ward Welton, the painter for JAWS whose job it was to keep up daily with the painted sharks, sharks that got pounded and beat up by the ocean and daily handling etc. His unenviable job was to keep those sharks clean and looking good on a daily basis. I began noticing him in some of the stills, out there in a small boat, painting on the shark, repairing.... His blending technique finally occurred to me looking at stills of when the shark was eating Quint. The closeups. I saw the greys with some dots, and the "white" areas (it was a light grey, as no white could work...) having the darker grey dots sort of fading down into them. I realized he sort of blended the colors at the line that way. He did it well too, since we don't notice it under a lot of (admittedly rapid shot) scrutiny. That way, he could do fixes at any time, that would always match. Brilliant! So, I just adapted as best I could, that technique to my shark paintup. I guess I am on to something, as it seems to be getting a lot of attention. Kudos must go to the late, great Ward Welton for all this and not me. Plus, it pays to have a LOT of good, clear reference photos! lol! 😁

      @@LesWalker2023 Ward Welton... I'm gonna be looking into his work. Dotting each colour with the opposite one makes sense to get a smoother blend. I'm gonna be hand painting too so at least I know that it is possible to get a great result without an airbrush. I appreciate your list of colours used, and I also like the addition of the "battle scars" and being a Jaws-fan as well as being interested in sharks in general I will also add the ampullae of lorenzini that I noticed they painted on Bruce in the movie. Again, thank you for an amazing series of videos and congratulations to an awesome looking Bruce that no doubt will bring you joy indefinitely! ❤️🦈

      @@CapnSliiirp Well, I guess so! lol! I both hate and love the idea of making it. I have had it since seeing the movie, way back in the 90's, so if I do make it, yeah, I will seriously try to share what I do. It was a grail, but since I have had it so long, does it still remain one? Not sure! I guess it does since it isn't out on display. That may be the next grail! Quick story about that one, my beloved Grandmother, Irene Smith Walker who lived to be 91 I think, was a big influence on my young life. She passed in 1979 I think. Been a while. Anyway, when I was a kid, one of my FAVORITE stories was her telling me about when she was a young lady in her 20's, and the news came about the ship, and how big the letters were on the front page of the newspapers when the Titanic sank. She would go on and on about that. It made a huge impression on her. Her stories made a huge impression on me. She gave me a set of old encyclopedias called "Our Wonder World" printed in 1914. It has all these references to the Olympic, Titanic's sister ship, which was still steaming at the time, and how grand those ships were. I was primed for the movie by the time it came out, and I remember thinking of Grandma while I watched it. The character of old Rose in the movie made me think of Grandma. It was a heady time. So, I got the model, only to be too intimidated to build it back then. I didn't have a Grandfather that might help me. (wink). But, I may take it on now. It might be the time. Thanks for asking and keeping it in my mind. It would honor my Grandma for sure!

      @@LesWalker2023 Oh man.. All of your stories are so great and fun to listen to lol. Definitely build that ship for you grandma, ik she would love the finished product:) Don’t be intimidated either. I believe you’ve improved so much over time, more than you probably realize, and you’ll probably do a LOT better on the model than you think you will. You will likely just sit there looking at it like, “huh.. that wasn’t actually too bad. This is a beautiful ship.” And it can be a good way to keep your grandmas memory around:) Everytime you see it you’ll think of her and her stories. And if anyone else sees it and says, “that’s pretty neat!” You can say, “Yeah it took me a long time to get to this one but it really paid off in the end!” And you can share her stories with them too! Keep her memory alive ya know! Anyways sorry to ramble haha. I’m really looking forward to seeing that series as well! Don’t open up the box and chicken out! lol. Take your time though man, and thank you for getting back to me and for sharing more stories!

    This is a wonderful, beautifully rendered reproduction of ‘Bruce’. Like you, I feel that Bruce had a real and tangible presence as a character in the movie, and as such it elevated Jaws (especially the final act) into something more than a movie. I like what you did with the jaw, it looks great with that slightly cleaner and more elegant line, something that feels somehow authentic and characterful. Well done, sir - a wonderful piece of art! Your painting is excellent - I received my Bruce from David this week and if it’s anywhere nearly as well done, I’ll be very happy.

      Thank you so much! I appreciate the great comment, and it makes me so proud that there are true fans out there that SEE Bruce for what he was, and still is, to Film History! More than a prop! Like E.T. or Yoda or other major prop characters, he makes the movie special! (Way more than a CG one ever can!) Again, Thanks so much!
