  • And in Conclusion!!! Thanks for the wait folks! It took some time to get this fella how I wanted him! Using stills recently obtained from clean bluray sources, and corrected color period photos, I have attempted to paint this shark as accurately as possible! At long last, I have my grail! Read "more" for details!
    Oh, and please forgive the slight in and out focus, as I had a lot of trouble lighting this model to really capture the accurate colors. I had to use lower lighting that I wanted to, and this camera is not top notch, so bear with me, and there are worthy shots in there!
    As for the model itself, Thanks again to the amazing David Stann! His tireless work on this model is why I have one, and why it is so adaptable to customization or adaptation. It is so close to totally accurate, that I simply moved a few pieces and added some bumps in the skin to account for it.
    And, having seen his painted version in progress, let me tell ya, had I seen that first, I might have simply gone with his painted version, due out soon!
    The man is a total artist!
    To paint this model, I totally hand painted it (No airbrush used!), using Vallejo acrylic paints, various grey shades and other assorted colors, which are all hand applied, and coated it with Mr Hobby Mr Super Clear Matt coat.
    To make the water effect work, I used Intermediate Gauzy Agent clear coat SHINE ENHANCER, and it really makes the water surface seem, like water!
    The rest is superglue, time and patience!
    Oh, and no actual BLACK or WHITE paint was used anywhere on the kit! Darkest color, Dark Grey, and the lightest is not white, but ivory, on the teeth, and the lightest skin tone is called White Grey! All bottled colors!
    COOL SCIENTIFIC ACCURACY NOTE: The small dark dots on his snout area, which I reproduce on my model, above his mouth and on the sides of his head, are not so much color fade paint technique, as they are representations of real shark sensory pores called " ampullae of Lorenzini" which help real sharks detect prey by detecting electrical fields caused by activity! Yeah! They are real shark features, which are accounted for on Bruce! Gotta love it! Thanks again to Jaws Bruce painter, Ward Welton! What a job that must have been!
    Photos of Joe Alves and Robert Mattey, and the large background one of the shark over the water, at the video's end are from the book "Designing Jaws" by Joe Alves.
    This model is and was a labor of love for me. I enjoyed it more than most kits I have built, simply because of the love I have for the source subject.
    I have studied this bloody shark for nearly 49 years now, and to finally have a thing to paint and play with, to make it close to my dream version, is priceless!
    GO for your grails! They can be obtained! NEVER GIVE UP! Get it! If it's a thing, object, figure, statue, whatever, go for it!
    And your's may not take nearly 50 years! lol!
    Til next video,
    Les out!
    PS: Forgot to thank Greg at the Artfull Barn in Clarkesville, for the paint and sprays used in the painting of this kit, and for building up the texture of the shark's skin (multiple passes of misted mattcoat spray!). And to the Soque River Modelers, my model club, for being a great, support group for this and other model projects! It's so nice to have such a great (and award winning!) gang to hang with!

I have spent so long thinking about this thing, to actually have one is a blessing. 95% of the work was done by David Stann of course, his amazingly accurate model sculpt captures Bruce like I have never seen. I only augmented here and there. But to have such words means a bunch to me. Thanks so much!

    This is a wonderful, beautifully rendered reproduction of ‘Bruce’. Like you, I feel that Bruce had a real and tangible presence as a character in the movie, and as such it elevated Jaws (especially the final act) into something more than a movie.
    I like what you did with the jaw, it looks great with that slightly cleaner and more elegant line, something that feels somehow authentic and characterful.
    Well done, sir - a wonderful piece of art!
    Your painting is excellent - I received my Bruce from David this week and if it’s anywhere nearly as well done, I’ll be very happy.

    Excellent build - the best I've seen, so far.
    I love the attention to detail on the mechanical sharks' rough hide. Rewatched the 4k recently, and discovered another gem (hiding in plain sight): the side view shot of the mechanical shark, snapping away at Quint's legs, reveals some damage to the shark's gill slits (bleeding). Perhaps the shark stabbed itself on the broken planking, after destroying the ORCA's stern, injuring itself?

    I've seen others that have come close, or are more of an idealized version of "Bruce", but this is the most screen-accurate I've seen, and the color and paint job is amazing! One quibble is that the protruding bottom gum looks a little too "meaty" or pronounced to my eye.

    • @LesWalker2023
      @LesWalker2023  Месяц назад +1

      I agree to a point. I too almost wanted to trim down the lower "chin" a bit, but then I saw a clip from the movie and one of the Bruces did have a slightly pronounced chin. So, I left it. It does work better when it is more open, as the kit came, and you don't notice it as much. But, since I closed the mouth just a bit from the kit, I guess that stands out. Still, thanks so much for the kind words and I appreciate the accuracy comment a bunch. Thanks!

    I actually came across this video by accident I wasn't looking for it. I did see the first part liked and subscribed but haven't watched yet. But I did watch this final built model. The paint work is just fine and the look is just like the real Bruce. The face is exactly as I remember those eyes as it pops it's head out of the water. That's a great model you have there. I'm in Australia so I'm not sure because I'd like to know where I would look or search for this to buy. I also have in mind to scratch build the shark but of course not that animatronic version. I couldn't make those parts. That's in the case I can't afford to buy it especially I can only buy from eBay and overseas will cost me a lot in exchange rates and custom charges. I know of Jaws since 1975 I was 8 years old as I watched Bruce scare the living daylights out of me on the big screen. I was taken by my sisters although the only thing I can't remember is if I knew what I was up for. I can remember that like it was last week. It's the best of Steven Spielberg. The Shark that was uncooperative at times to the Shark is working. It's a classic. Your right that Shark did a great job than those CGI versions. Yes they are ok but Bruce was magic back in the day. I'm happy that he was salvaged from some dump sight and restored for all to see. So well done on a fantastic mechanical miniature version. I just remembered I do have a model of a shark and dive cage with a diver with camera by Pegasus models. I haven't built it yet I'm trying to work out how I'm going to set it up as to make it look like suspended under water. This is a Trickey model. I'm not a professional modeller just amateur. So Wonderful model build the colours are exceptional. I'd like to know what greys you used although there's so many grey colours. Excellent work.👍🇭🇲🦘🐨✌️

      Good hearing from you! And thanks for the kind words on my work. As for the actual model, I think the only place you can get it is through Stannarts. That's www.stannarts.com and David Stann is a great guy, so ask about how you could get one. Get into his site, and ask a question in a comment or something. I know he would want you to have one if you can get it. Tell him Les sent you and maybe get through. Best of luck, and enjoy it if you do get it! I will comment later on the colors I used once you get one. No point in all that now. (BTW, I did not ever use white paint as a color though! I used "White-Grey" by Vallejo for the lightest color and "Ivory" for the teeth. I think I used "Red-Black" thinned down as a wash for the gummy parts. But, no use of actual WHITE on the entire model!)

      @@LesWalker2023Thanks for that reply. Much appreciated. I hope I can get through to stannarts and speak to David Stann. Depending on the cost I'm not sure I'll be able to buy it. It looks like it will be an expensive model. I'm wondering about the scale.The killer for me is the postage and currency exchange as mentioned. I'd like to buy that if I can. It's no matter about the colours. Your right about the white. I believe also it's a very light grey almost white. You said you had to make some parts. If I do get this great model I know I'm going to be confused by the mechanical parts. But It's impressive representation of how the actual shark worked. Thanks again. Super work.👍🇭🇲🦘🐨✌️

    • @LesWalker2023
      @LesWalker2023  3 месяца назад +2

      Well, I don't use an airbrush, so I used a hand painting technique I actually read about in some of the JAWS production books, regarding unsung art staff/production hero Ward Welton, the painter for JAWS whose job it was to keep up daily with the painted sharks, sharks that got pounded and beat up by the ocean and daily handling etc. His unenviable job was to keep those sharks clean and looking good on a daily basis. I began noticing him in some of the stills, out there in a small boat, painting on the shark, repairing.... His blending technique finally occurred to me looking at stills of when the shark was eating Quint. The closeups. I saw the greys with some dots, and the "white" areas (it was a light grey, as no white could work...) having the darker grey dots sort of fading down into them. I realized he sort of blended the colors at the line that way. He did it well too, since we don't notice it under a lot of (admittedly rapid shot) scrutiny. That way, he could do fixes at any time, that would always match. Brilliant! So, I just adapted as best I could, that technique to my shark paintup. I guess I am on to something, as it seems to be getting a lot of attention. Kudos must go to the late, great Ward Welton for all this and not me.
      Plus, it pays to have a LOT of good, clear reference photos! lol! 😁

    • @Airbuzz
      @Airbuzz 3 месяца назад

      @@LesWalker2023 Ward Welton... I'm gonna be looking into his work. Dotting each colour with the opposite one makes sense to get a smoother blend. I'm gonna be hand painting too so at least I know that it is possible to get a great result without an airbrush.
      I appreciate your list of colours used, and I also like the addition of the "battle scars" and being a Jaws-fan as well as being interested in sharks in general I will also add the ampullae of lorenzini that I noticed they painted on Bruce in the movie.
      Again, thank you for an amazing series of videos and congratulations to an awesome looking Bruce that no doubt will bring you joy indefinitely!

      @@CapnSliiirp Well, I guess so! lol! I both hate and love the idea of making it. I have had it since seeing the movie, way back in the 90's, so if I do make it, yeah, I will seriously try to share what I do. It was a grail, but since I have had it so long, does it still remain one? Not sure! I guess it does since it isn't out on display. That may be the next grail! Quick story about that one, my beloved Grandmother, Irene Smith Walker who lived to be 91 I think, was a big influence on my young life. She passed in 1979 I think. Been a while. Anyway, when I was a kid, one of my FAVORITE stories was her telling me about when she was a young lady in her 20's, and the news came about the ship, and how big the letters were on the front page of the newspapers when the Titanic sank. She would go on and on about that. It made a huge impression on her. Her stories made a huge impression on me. She gave me a set of old encyclopedias called "Our Wonder World" printed in 1914. It has all these references to the Olympic, Titanic's sister ship, which was still steaming at the time, and how grand those ships were. I was primed for the movie by the time it came out, and I remember thinking of Grandma while I watched it. The character of old Rose in the movie made me think of Grandma. It was a heady time. So, I got the model, only to be too intimidated to build it back then. I didn't have a Grandfather that might help me. (wink). But, I may take it on now. It might be the time. Thanks for asking and keeping it in my mind. It would honor my Grandma for sure!
