Safety on an Australian Mine Site Pre Start and Safety Meetings plus Paperwork
In today’s video I am going to continue on with our series on how safety works on a mining site. In this video we are going to look at how the difference between a pre-start meeting and a safety meeting run by the crew safety rep. I we also cover the importance of paperwork on site and how it’s in your best interest to complete it.
As always it pays to know how the system works to take advantage of it. Knowing how the mine works, is the skill all the employers want, that most New Starters over look when trying to get their first job.

    Hey Andrew, I was hoping you could give me some advice? I want to start the course and get it all sorted, but I have a trip pre-booked for late June. Would I be best off starting the DIY package now to do the training and then upgrading to the Workready package after June or is there another way I should do it? I just don't want to screw you guys around and also, going by some of your previous videos it sounds like underground foremen are pretty unforgiving and wouldn't be overly happy about someone applying for a job and then saying "I have plans at this date"

    Hi guys, love your work. My question is how would you go about landing a role if you were previously in the industry. I was a process operator for 10 years but left the industry in 2017. Now 8 years older and wiser I would like to get back into the game as a production operator which was never a previous option. I am doing my S11 as well as dump truck and water cart tickets to hopefully get a look in. Does industry experience really count or will I be judged on what I have been doing since? (Desk job).

      @AustralianMiningforNewStarters 6 дней назад

      @@woofythor hi and thanks for the question It won't matter that you've been doing a desk job for the last 8 years. All the employers that we deal with are interested in is people that know how the industry works and how their mine works so they can throw you in the deep end I've pretty much covered the questions that you're asked in today's job hunt video, the link of which is below ruclips.net/video/TQp4tFoK7f4/видео.htmlsi=LFJulnK_8VEzq9Q2 You need to have a look at the videos that I've done on the S11 and equipment tickets before you waste a whole heap of money on qualifications that are only used in the coal mining industry in Queensland and as I go into in today's job hunt video, that's not where the jobs are The employers that we deal with want people on their gold and copper mines and none of those employers use the S11 or equipment tickets. They all have to issue their own on-site procedures and on-site equipment tickets Thanks for the positive feedback. Glad you're getting info out of the videos. If you've got any more questions let me know, but the best way for you to get a job is to sign up for the training. Make sure that you study it. Put your previous processing experience on your resume but just make it real clear that you've done the training to educate yourself how the Hardock mine works because you want a career on the production mining side of the industry, there's full instructions in the training on how to do this Hope that info helps

    Are owner operators more forgiving to new starters underground then contractors? i just landed a job with an owner operator as a truck driver after watching a few of your videos i'm already worried I'm going to fail.

    • @AustralianMiningforNewStarters
      @AustralianMiningforNewStarters 6 дней назад

      @@anthonyrear7237yes, the owner operators are slightly more forgiving but it's all down to circumstance Because everybody relies on the buddy system for training. It just depends on how good your buddy is and one of the main reasons that we wrote the training, we wanted people to be able to access the information that the buddy should be showing them on the job. Because if you get somebody that doesn't know or they're not of good communicator or there's a personality clash for whatever reason, then it can make it really hard for you to succeed. Whereas if you do the training (the DIY and now that you've got the job. You can write it off on tax) it teaches you everything that the buddy should be showing you. So if you do get somebody that falls into that poor category, you've got all the information to jump in with them and go and make it work for yourself. We often get stories from people that have gotten jobs that this has happened to, they've been able to navigate the situation themselves by using the information that's in the training Hope that answers your question and the best way not to fail is to know exactly what you're walking yourself into, well done on getting the job as well 👍

      Because no one tells anyone anything: Your best bet is to land a CONTRACT type job if you are on a six month visa. There are lots of 6 month contracts out there and it will give you a better chance to get a sponsored visa by the company you work for if you do well. Always apply direct to mining companies or headhunters who feed direct to the big mining companies. Working for "dodgy" or fly by night contractors will get you nowhere as will shutdown work (unless you want to do shutdown work your entire life- most do not). With most shutdowns, you will get little to no support, be dropped off at a mine site, given a work pack for a site you have zero knowledge of and told see you later- in other words you will be set up to fail and your chances of 50/50 get smashed down to about 15/85, not to mention, you will spend $$$ on tickets for different mine site and companies that you may only use for one shutdown swing. To add to this, if it dosent work out, there are sometimes clauses that any paid time doing training or inductions is clawed back from you if you fail to complete a certain amount of time at the job- NEVER ACCEPT AN AGREEMENT LIKE THIS, you have no idea weather or not you can handle this industry until you have been on the ground working in a mine. Another thing to consider is that if all you have on your CV is shutdowns, the mining companies will become reluctant to take you on full time. I have been doing shutdowns on and off for the last year, as I am between two different countries now, but I wouldn't dare list those on my CV. Remember, the labor hire companies will tell you "ongoing work" but that is designed to fool you into a false sense of security of continued employment because they can let you go in a second and as Andrew says, all it takes is to get a garbage supervisor/ one you don't get on with or one who takes no prisoners and you're done, stuck in a remote part of the world having spent thousands to get there, which brings me to my next point. Have six months worth of savings in the bank and an exit plan to your home country/ state if things don't work out- you don't want to have your life ruined by the whims of some supervisor who wont even remember you in two days time. Don`t become a victim, plan your mining career carefully and you can do very well indeed. Good luck.

      @@Humanskidmark I don't know what's going on with the RUclips algorithm but these days social media seems to only push people doing videos about their accommodation on site, rather than what the job actually is going to be and what the employer is going to expect you to do on site (they love their tiktok stars) Wish we had better numbers but people stop watching once they find the channel, do the training and get a job (which we totally get, no point watching once you've got a job). That's why the numbers for most of the videos are around where they are. Once people get a job or decide it's not for them they move on But anything you can do to share the channel around would be much appreciated. And if you've got any questions about mining, more than happy to answer them. If you go back through the channel you can have a look at some of the videos that I've done on the different licences that you need and why, that will explain to you what's going on Andy, who's replied to you, down below was one of the guys that just recently used the training to get himself a job Moving to a mining town can be a good way of getting a job, but make sure that you know what you're getting yourself into and do the training before you go. When people ask me about mining I usually say something like "its just like high school except everyone wears high viz and vapes". I really struggled to get in without having FIFO experience even though I'm a fitter. I eventually got into underground through a connection. My advice to people is if your going to try it, you have to stick it out and give it a good go for at least a couple of months. The reality is you will most likely hate it when you first start. Whole new place, long way from home, don't know anyone or how anything works, early starts, cant go home at the end of the day. Not to mention no shortage of supervisors on power trips. Thing is though once you learn your job and prove yourself it becomes way more enjoyable. Gym and pool every night. Eat like a pig and meet some good mates. I'm in open cut now for one of the big companies. Couple of my mates from underground came with me. Now its the easiest 200k a year, 8/6 ill make.

      @@SRTechnical0047 The only way to get on-site training is to get a job Our training is the only non-company training available to the public that actually teaches you how it all works The only other way to get the training is to get a job and do it on site. That's why we wrote our training back in the day as shift bosses. We just got sick of having people turn up not knowing how it all works. So everything that they show you on site, is included in the online training Teaching you the practical sides of the jobs is very simple and it doesn't take very long, however teaching you what everybody does around you, and what's going on. That's what everybody struggles with, especially the engineers But if you're after on-site training, the only way you're going to get that is if you get a job and then it becomes sink or swim training.
