  • In today’s video I am going to look at what experience employers really want out of their new starters. I have a lot of people comment that they feel they have enough experience to do a mining job, without knowing the first thing about how the industry works. This is extremely frustrating for employers (and people working in the industry) as they get lots of people that have machine operating experience that fail spectacularly because they can’t get their head around how it all works and can’t be left alone. If you can’t be left alone to get on with the job then you won’t have a job for very long.
As always it pays to know how the system works to take advantage of it. Knowing how the mine works, is the skill all the employers want, that most New Starters over look when trying to get their first job.

What are the hottest mining towns to go and apply in person right now?

@@Ray-Bradbury-o5s thanks for your question. The hottest towns to go to at the moment if you want a mining job. Kalgoorlie in Western Australia, Perth in Western Australia (it can be difficult to get a fly in fly out if you're on a working holiday Visa, but if you're a permanent resident or a kiwi, they're screaming for people) Mount Isa Queensland and Cobar New South Wales (and the surrounding areas Parks, Orange, Dubbo all have big mines surrounding them looking for people)
Just make sure that you know what you're getting yourself into before you drive out to one of these towns. Over the years I've watched lots of people drive to Kalgoorlie, fail spectacularly and have to drive home because they didn't know what they were getting themselves into
It's one of the reasons I'm so passionate about the training because it teaches you all the good stuff and the bad stuff that you need to know about the industry. So you know 100%, if it's going to be for you or not
Hope that information helps, if you have any more questions let me know 👍

Are owner operators more forgiving to new starters underground then contractors? i just landed a job with an owner operator as a truck driver after watching a few of your videos i'm already worried I'm going to fail.

@@anthonyrear7237yes, the owner operators are slightly more forgiving but it's all down to circumstance
Because everybody relies on the buddy system for training. It just depends on how good your buddy is and one of the main reasons that we wrote the training, we wanted people to be able to access the information that the buddy should be showing them on the job. Because if you get somebody that doesn't know or they're not of good communicator or there's a personality clash for whatever reason, then it can make it really hard for you to succeed.
Whereas if you do the training (the DIY and now that you've got the job. You can write it off on tax) it teaches you everything that the buddy should be showing you. So if you do get somebody that falls into that poor category, you've got all the information to jump in with them and go and make it work for yourself.
We often get stories from people that have gotten jobs that this has happened to, they've been able to navigate the situation themselves by using the information that's in the training
Hope that answers your question and the best way not to fail is to know exactly what you're walking yourself into, well done on getting the job as well 👍
