.999 Mega Monster Medals: The Massive Silver Medals of Toivo Johnson
Classic US coin designs are common on silver rounds today. But when one man attempted to recreate those designs way back in the early 1960s the industry--and the Secret Service--weren't too pleased!
Take a deep dive into these mysterious and massive silver medals from the dawn of commercial bullion.
In this video I mention several videos. The early .999 Silver Coins for Advanced Collectors:

The Associates silver bar mystery, and a strange round that asks more questions than it answers.
I know very little about medals and only own a few of military origin inherited from family. Really interesting stuff; I wonder if they are also the precursor of modern high relief ‘art coins’ (re: Powercoin & Le Grand Mint products for example)? Excellent, informative video again Dub-C - thank you. 👍
30:19 Pantheon?
Love different stuff as long as it’s not home poured - thanks for sharing
Hermes caries a caduceus with two snakes while the god of medicine caries the Rod of Asclepius which has one snake
The Greek god of medicine IS Asclepius…….
Blah Uninteresting and boring designs.
lol get a clue
Just started video but I like the big medals. But .999 is cool
I for one love these giant medals/medallions. But once I pass these on, would they have that same kind of love for them. I think of these as art, others see chunks of silver. Buy what you like, but you can't take it with you when you're gone. Struggles. I can't wait for the so-called dollar video. Those are becoming my favorites!
Great observation, Tony. And true about many if not most of the things we love in life--they probably won't hold the same fascination for the next generation.
hi
Stoked for this video.
I know I’m late but dear god is it HARD to find fractional platinum without insane premiums. Even 1/10 oz coins are hard to find in my area. I have a couple 5 gram bars but those took so long to find that I have doubts stacking silver.
What's funny is that I was trying to buy full ounce pieces and all I could find were fractionals. I got another that I'll mention soon!
Good golly Spandau Ballet knew what was up even back then
Beautiful!
A 1/4 oz gold coin question, please. Presently my budget allows me to buy 1/4, oz's, I am aware of the premiums vs 1ozers, but I always see the 1/4oz gold British Tutor coins at $30+ lower than other 1/4ozers like AGE, Maple, Britannia, etc...I haven’t collected the quarter ounce gold tutor coins in the past, but they are at such a great price being a 1/4oz that it’s frustrating vs buying a more expensive 1/4 gold ones. In your opinion, would you buy these because of the lower price? And why or why not, thank you!!
Hey Eli! I think you're asking about the British "Sovereign"? Made from 1817 up until today. You've asked a great and hotly-debated questions: Whether it's better to have modern, pure gold (.999) pure troy ounce fractions, or classic, vintage 90% Pre-1933 gold or those classic British sovereigns that are 91.67% pure. It's a great question. I have some of both, but I actually prefer the older pieces. Though I'm careful to buy only really nice examples. I talk about all of these in the Gold Rookie's First Purchase video series: ruclips.net/p/PLebJigXP2OH-71V1YscNZlPvDJl2SGGHD
@@Dub-C_Coins thanks for the reply, but I was referring to the gold British tutor Coins in the 1/4 oz size
@@Eli-qr9hc Is that the queens beast series?
@@Dub-C_Coins Yes, the 'part 2' series
@@Dub-C_Coins yes, the 'Part2 ' series Beasts and now the Tutors.
Are there ways to tell if a coin is a re-strike vs an original?
With some coins it's easy: The actually say on them in the form of an added or missing element. Some say the color of the French 20 francs from the early 20th century is a tell, too. Really just depends on the coin.
I was always wondering why isn’t there an institution that grades silver or gold bars? That’ll be awesome to have different vintage bars, slabbed and graded. Maybe I should open one up
I've corresponded with NGC and asked them to begin grading vintage bars--I even offered the Lydia Hoard as a guinea pig. They were receptive to the idea but nothing so far. Which is odd--both PCGS and NGC have graded bars in certain circumstances. I have two unusual vintage silver bars that are graded by NGC.
@@Dub-C_Coins that is awesome 😎
I always had a problem with pennyweight. In my younger years when I would sell gold to a pawnshop and they used pennyweights, I always thought they were trying to screw me. I know I know never take your gold or silver to a sketchy pawnshop😂
Great video. I like the idea of the modern $5 commemoratives. But I really prefer the classics. I don’t own either at the moment. Some of the commemorative designs are not exciting to me, BUT the lower premium makes up for it.
I’m watching these because of your suggestion yesterday in a comment on the reel you posted. Really good content. I love what you have to say. What I really like about LMU coins is the size and variety. The 20 Franc pieces. Are extremely close in weight to a quarter ounce and in size to a US nickel and when you start looking at the 10 Franc pieces. They are really close to a 1/10 ounce in weight and a small cent in size. Aside from all of that, there are also so many different designs and countries to choose from.
LMU coins are just a fun, affordable way to stack gold. I love them!
Wow what a beautiful site to see. Love each and every one of them piles. GOLD GOLD GOLD!! Get you some. 🇺🇲🦅⚖️
These are the exact 5 categories of gold that I am wanting to stack! Bullion, sovereigns, American, LMU and pesos. It’s super motivating to see this video!
Yeah! Great minds think alike! The entire Gold Rookie's First Purchase video series is built around these pieces that I feel are some of the best options for beginning to even intermediate gold stackers. Glad you liked the short!
I just got three delivered from Costco and they came in capsules not the mint wrap that you usually get them in. I was surprised to see that.
Interesting. Thanks for letting us know!
Nice job!
Thanks!
Sweet....
Now my wife and I have been checking the coinstars. She found 17 cents yesterday, no silver but we're hunting hard!! Keep the videos coming WC.
YESSSS! That's awesome. Thanks for checking in!
Beautiful coins and very nice (and quite uncommon in some cases) fractional European gold. You’ve been keeping all this very quiet dub-C! 😀
Wow what is that coin at the right edge of pile #3? Never seen it before.
Thanks. Czechoslovakian ducat. KM#8. It's a pretty scarce series. Some very rare examples have individual serial numbers!
Thats a lot of gold.👍

Yep,all markets are manipulated. Stocks, gold, silver etc. High volume paper transactions can move it up or down. Just like the US Fed does. So many variables. Peace!
