Big Early Mexican Gold: The 18th and 19th Century Gold 8 Escudo!

  • The US silver dollar was based largely on the silver Spanish 8 reale. But Spain and later the Mexican Republic also had a big solid gold coin before the United States released the much-loved $20 "double eagle". That coin was called the 8 Escudo. In this overview, we'll look at some examples of these historic and some might say undervalued 8 Escudos. We'll compare and contrast them with the US $20 gold piece of the same era. And I'll offer a few suggestions if you decide to pursue these exciting, historic, and scarce gold coins.
If you like big Mexican gold, and you haven't checked out the Stacking Mexican Silver video series, you'll find it here:

Hi WC thank you for another great video. I had been working on collecting the one peso 1870 - 1905. I have been on the hunt for a Maximilian 20 peso piece but I like how much more gritty and unique each one of these pieces I am definitely gonna add this to the list.

Great videos and commentary making older precious metal coinage systems acceessible the modern person now expose to only fiat currency.
From Australia we also saw Spanish coins in colonial currency circulation, although our gold sovereigns, silver shillings and crowns followed the English weight and fineness
    system.
The 8 escudos (8 shields) equated to 16 Spanish silver dollars, each dollar was 8 reales (8 royals), therefore 8 escudos was 16x8 reales = 124 Reales.
Gold denominations were half, 1, 2, 4 and 8 escudos.
Forgive my correction to your otherwise excellent presentation by noting the US gold dollar was in fact equivalent to the half escudo not the one escudo as you stated.
Both the gold and silver coins were nominally 900/1000 fine and both the 8 reales and 8 escudos were nominally 27 grammes in weight. The very broad 8 escudos was thinner than the 8 reales due to the higher density of gold relative to silver.
Although the Spanish colonial coinage circulated for some 500 years, by about 1800 the fineness debased to 875/1000 fine, which carried into the MexicanGold coinage.
The US $20 was a higher denomination than the 8 escudos which was $16.

The Phrygean Cap seems to be worn in the US in 1776 and in France as well during it's Revolution during the 1790's as the cap is typically red - I would imagine that symbolism to be "self evident.." ;) . Great channel - I agree that Mexican/South American gold/silver numismatic items are sleepers - however the mintages certainly get competitive for Crown-Sized Coins in particular from South America. An American expert numismatist(Big Nub) has pointed out that American Gold (Eagle-Sized) items also have sub 10K mintages for a bunch of different dates as well.

Yep. I draw the parallels between the US and the Mexican use of the Phrygean Cap in Stacking Mexican Silver Volume 2 at about the 10:0-0 mark. Check it out if you haven't!

Fantastic video as always. Tiny little constructive feedback: type the word "escudo", or any other foreign word that you repeat dozens of times, on Google (or Google translator) and click to hear the pronunciation. Hearing eskidos is killing the video vibe :)
