      Coins are an incredible way of learning about history. Nothing like having a physical manifestation of the past to spark one's interest.

    • @mattl3729
      @mattl3729 Год назад +1

      Indeed- I used to find history interesting, but sometimes rather dry; but now having a physical piece of that history in my hands brings it to life so much more! And coins inspire me to learn more- it's wonderful 😁

    These coins are absolutely beautiful and are well preserved pieces of ancient art! It's so insane that a coin struct thousands of years ago would have such a fine relief in the design. Gold coins weren't in typical circulation and were only hoarded by wealthy people or were used only for a few large transactions at a time.

    • @ClassicalNumismatics

      Thats true! Thats why a roman sestertius, for example, is so hard to find in mint-state condition. Most of these coins circulated a lot

    As a collector of modest means, I find Byzantine solidii are wonderful gold coins for a collector on a budget. The "Christ Pantokrator" is the most famous image of not just ancient Christianity, but of Byzantium at the apex of it's power, and I was able to obtain one such solidus (from a CNG auction, no less) just a few days before your video on the topic!

    I hope to one day be fabulously wealthy enough to afford something as singular as native Pharaonic coinage. The rarity aside there's something absolutely magical about this relic Bronze Age kingdom being forced to adopt a new technology to hire foreign warriors in the hopes of preserving their independence against a rising power, that coin is a material manifestation of the climax of Egyptian history and the changing of the guard of civilization as a whole.

    • @ClassicalNumismatics

    I think my favorite gold coin that I ever saw was an aureus of Faustina II. It went for 6000 euros which is beyond my current budget but is within the bounds of possible as a crowning piece. For now, I'll enjoy cleaning my little bronzes and the occasional silver piece.

    • @ClassicalNumismatics

    That gold stater of Nectanebo is the only true Pharaonic coin, since as it was shown by Butcher and others the common bronzes with Ram/scales are civic issues of Syrian Antioch from Roman Imperial times!

    My coins can't compare with the ones you show here, but I feel very privileged to have six late Roman/Byzantine solidii in my collection. One of Theodosius II, one of Leo I similar to the one you did a short video on a month or so ago. My others are one of Anastasius, one of Justin I, one of Justinian I and finally one of Maurice Tiberius. I find Roman Aurei to generally be far outside my budget, but every once in a while I find a Solidus that just barely fits and doesn't cause my wife to try out some of the techniques she reads in the murder mysteries she loves so much... 😉

    Wow so beautiful coins. Today I was wondering why there weren't any Roman mints in Spain which was so rich in gold and silver? After first century I mean.

    • @ClassicalNumismatics
      @ClassicalNumismatics  Год назад +1

      After the massive issuing of coins in Spain during the 1st century BC and the 1st AD, the province must have been monetized enought and sufficiently integrated to the overall roman economy that coins coming from the Lugdunum and Rome mints, plus those already circulating internally must have been enough for the local economy to function.

      This channel is, and will always be consumer and collector-oriented, first and foremost. 😃
      I'm slowly transforming this little adventure here into something more professional, but what makes this whole channel work is a constructive bond with the community. Im one of you guys, a fellow collector, and any company that wants to buy some space here will have to go through the same filters I would apply to any dealers I considered buying from.
