    Byzantine coins have a low value when they should he worth more

    • @MrMonkeySwag96
      @MrMonkeySwag96 4 года назад +4

      There's a reason why Byzantine coins aren't worth much compared to Greek and Roman coins. The Average Joe can't explain what the "Byzantine Empire" is without Googling it. We are taught in school that the Roman Empire collapsed from barbarian invasions in 476 AD. In reality, the so called "Byzantine Empire" is the surviving remnant of the Roman Empire. The "Byzantine Empire" lasted until 1453, so technically the Roman Empire fell 40 years before Columbus discovered America. Most people don't know what the "Byzantine Empire" is due to the Byzantines being underrepresented in pop culture and lack of mention in textbooks. In addition, Byzantine coins are quite unattractive compared to earlier Greek and Roman coins. Keep in mind, Byzantine coins were minted during the Dark Ages, a chaotic period. So naturally, Byzantine coins are ugly compared to Greek and Roman coins. Hence why there's less demand for Byzantine coins

    I found a gold roman coin inside a secret compartment in a wooden chest that belonged to my grandfather but not sure for how many decades it was sitting in there with a dosen of decayed papers and photos. Anyways, I think it belongs to me now since I'm the one who discovered it but I'm not going to tell the rest of my family about it or at least to whom it belonged.
    Info:
    My grandfather was a farmer from north Africa.
    The coin has the famous figure of Romulus and Remus feeding from a female wolf on one side and the other side has a head figure of the roman emperor of that era

    The coin's actually in pretty good condition, and it's definitely one of the more "Imperial" looking coins. Constantine IX may have been a somewhat mediocre Emperor, but he understood the concept of looking impressive, and so his coins are not to be ignored. His portrait is a quintessential image of later Macedonian dynastic power. I would say that because most of the wording is intact, and the strike is pretty crisp (with a rather nice light patina), that this coin would actually fetch a higher price than what David suggests. I would probably value the coin on the higher end of his estimate -- about $950-1000, so Rick wasn't really that far off. His knowledge was in fact rather impressive here.

      Precious metals are collapsing. Bitcoin is even worse. All these commodities based largely on theoretical value aren't holding up to market pressure when faced with an actual crisis. Gold will recover, so now is a good time to buy. But I think this crisis is going to prove bitcoin worthless in the long term.

    I've bought and sold dozens of Byzantine coins like this one, been getting $500-$750 , these coins were also not pure Gold like many other coins, they are called hyperpyron about 20 Carat (after year 1092), then after 1200 ad went down to 18 Carat, then 15, then 12 Carat after 1282. less Gold doesn't always mean less value, but does sometimes effect its desirability and some value.
