AWSI 2024 Highlights - Wing Foiling / Wingfoiling - Interviews and all the new gear!
It's that time of year again where I take you behind the scenes of the industry only AWSI wind and water sports tradeshow in Hood River, Oregon.
I tried to make the video shorter this year, but because there was no wind, I ended up interviewing almost every brand. Use the chapters below or double tap the right side of your screen to skip to the next topic.
I highly recommend watching the interviews with Adrian Roper from AXIS and Kane De Wilde with KT Foiling for some really insightful thoughts on foil design and some of the more exciting foils this year.
Check out ‪@Windkitesup‬ for more videos from the event as well as ‪Wing Life Podcast.

      If you’re a beginner I still believe the most beneficial setup is a traditional 120L board, 6-7m good hand wing, and a big foil. Later you can move onto a 90L hybrid board, 5-6m wing, and higher efficiency foil, but trying to learn on that gear will absolutely be no fun and delay your progress unless you have a serious Windsports background. Also traditional learning gear can be found cheap on the used market

      I launched the How to Wingfoil Series earlier this year and a few other things but they didn’t really catch on, and I even got a few negative nellys in the comments on some of the stuff I did make, so I haven’t been as inclined to make content. Not to mention I think most gear is “good enough” now and I don’t want to just make videos reviewing stuff to sell to people when their foils are fine. We’ll have to reevaluate where we go from here, but know that I really value genuine viewers like yourself! There was a smaller media presence this year and the show itself felt smaller. It could have just been the heat and lack of wind though. Or maybe foiling has hit some growing pains. The winglife guy is a super nice dude and did a great job.

    Thanks for the video! I tried your method and found that the wing can only stay horizontal during the flip (as in your demo) when riding slower than the wind. A horizontal wing obviously makes the flip and jibe much easier. When riding in very light wind / faster than wind I still get backwinded,/ the trailing edge is pushed and towards my side . Carving sharply is even more essential to make sure wing is not in front of me but it will often still push me off the board from the side. Do you have the same experience?

    • @wingmanfoilclub
      @wingmanfoilclub 19 дней назад

      No, I don’t. I think you might still need to dial in the technique a little. The wing can stay horizontal at your back hip through most of the turn and is kept there by your apparent wind. Then when you “flip” the wing, think of it more as a horizontal pizza spin where you push the trailing edge to the other side. You might not be initiating the turn fast enough or keeping the wing back enough. If I’m in really light wind and going slow and the wing has zero power in it and I need to jibe (like exiting a wave in a no wind zone which is common at our spots), then I will do the race jibe and let that nose drop pull me around to gain some speed.

    Great video and tips. I always hold the wing flying with the front handle, not the flag handle. Much better control of the wing which stays clear of the water at all time (both going out and going on). I also try to push down on the front of the board as the wave is coming (if not too big) to carry my body and my wing above the white water. Jumping off near shore, i kick off like you but hold on the the wing both hands and eventually only let go of the back hand to keep the wing out of the water. Amazing wave session you had!

      In some ways it’s super chill… but it can turn bad quickly! I went back earlier this summer on a decent sized day and had a great session. But now I just play on the north point waves. They’re great for winging and allow you to hit some white water do a trick and get spit oil into the channel. But the secret to Davenport really seems to be rig something big (board, foil, or wing) to beat that wind shadow, stay on the north point or be cautious when on the south reef, and just go somewhere else when it’s weedy! Hope to see you out there some day.

    Took 20 minutes to say: go fast slightly downwind, gently breach the front foil, put all your weight on your back foot, hold the slide until speed slows and put all your weight on your front foot and recover. My tip, slide on the stab, not the front wing.

      @@wingmanfoilclub I have a feeling what he meant was to put the weight over the stab, to slide... even if it's sliding the front. Just reading between the lines here.

    Sure the no hands wing behind the back, take off glasses, look at camera and jibe out was sick. But pointing to random areas of the frame was my favorite part hahaha.

      Hola Rob! Podrías explicar el truco del min. 9:15? Cuando te pones la cometa en la nuca.. Gracias! Tus vídeos son geniales!!

    • @wingmanfoilclub
      @wingmanfoilclub Месяц назад

      @magiclick2001 es bastante fácil. Primero tienes que ir un poco downwind para quitar potencia a la cometa y poder pasarla por encima de tu cabeza. Es lo mismo que iniciar un Heineken jibe, pero en lugar de continuar el jibe, colocas ambas manos en la cometa y te inclinas hacia atrás. Inclinarse hacia atrás sobre la cometa añade potencia como backwinding traditional.

      Oh man that is the worst. I try not to do anything too crazy way outside anymore, and that’s also why I have an over-engineered wing leash. Hope you made it in without incident or visits from Landlord.

    Great videos. I'm a sailor, so "luffing handle" makes sense to me, but with students we've been calling it the "neutral handle."

    I find it much easier as a beginner to stand up right away using the wing to stabilize while standing up. I fall more when trying to knee taxi then stand up.

    • @wingmanfoilclub
      @wingmanfoilclub 2 месяца назад

      Everyone is different, but I think the knee start is the best method (earlier in the video we see a beginner student fall off a SUP board trying to stand up right away). And as you get on smaller or skinnier boards it will not be possible to stand up without wind and forward momentum. However some people have knee issues or other circumstances where standing up first might benefit them. If that is the case, I recommend a big stable board for learning.

      @@wingmanfoilclub I recently went down a board size, 150L to 130L, and you are right, it helps to learn the taxi start. I just wish I could find a way not to destroy my knees in the process!

    • @wingmanfoilclub
      @wingmanfoilclub Месяц назад

      @mekanism1200 the good news is you will spend less and less time on your knees as you improve. You might even check out my tutorial on The Stink Bug Start. It’s made for really small boards, but it can also be used on bigger boards to start very quickly. In the meantime, definitely recommend some knee pads. I wear them nude my wetsuit every session.

    For the wing lifting in the wind when attached to the mast, I like to strap my helmet or even better camelback or like object to the luff handle. Has always worked to keep the wing from lifting in the air.

    Good video from the Hook, which is where I started learning. The milfoil can be a problem there! Knee pads under wetsuit is a great tip. I started with a Quantum 76 and really struggled with the mast in the B position, and did better with Quantum 100 and A position, both using the 42 stab. I'm sure this depends on foil track location and length, but the mast being farther forward will make it easier to taxi upwind. Most people teach to climb on from the back of the board and kneel with shins parallel to centerline, but I prefer to start angled across the board, like you and Rob are showing.
