i mean this was epicly informative being new to wing foiling. so thank you. But more confused than ever where to get into the up to date stuff. For a 180 pound person wanting to wing and downwind surf in socal conditions 12-16 kts on good days -what would be anyones go to setup? thanks everyone.
If you’re a beginner I still believe the most beneficial setup is a traditional 120L board, 6-7m good hand wing, and a big foil. Later you can move onto a 90L hybrid board, 5-6m wing, and higher efficiency foil, but trying to learn on that gear will absolutely be no fun and delay your progress unless you have a serious Windsports background. Also traditional learning gear can be found cheap on the used market
@conorprovan9435 if you go to my website under Wingfoiling -> How to Wingfoil Series you’ll see an episode on beginner gear. It links to a video with Josh from The Foil Shop and then below it in the replies I’ve written a MASSIVE dissertation on beginner boards, wings, and foils. Should answer most of your questions. But anything a couple years old that is cheap and not too narrow should work! wingmanfoilclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=58 Edit: You do need to sign up (free) to view the pictures.
This sport is getting so expensive, love the interviews thanks. We camped at Viento last fall for 2 weeks, awesome spot. The trains didnt bother us but we are in a 35foot fifth wheel. Larry
Absolutely, and I meant to add the following caveat to this video: “You don’t need any of this new junk.” My wings are close-out $250 wings. My board is close-out used $500 years old design. My foils are decent but you don’t see me out there buying the latest and greatest now that I have decent ones. (And I bought some of them used for a deal.) The trend has been to push expensive race gear or the best downwind foil. But this sport was always about fun and people are forgetting that. I have plenty of fun on my old gear and outride quite a few people in the process! I wasn’t even going to make the video this year because of how commercial the sport has become. But people demanded I go.
Your videos are the next best thing to being there in person! I do have the Sabfoil Balz 909 which I rode at Topanga on your birthday. I started boosting with it last weekend. It has a lot more pop than the Medusa pro, at least for me learning to jump. Now I’m salivating over the 808.
@@dcjtv Did you feel compelled to tip because I mentioned your name and said you were faster?? Haha. Boosting now! Uh oh! Thanks so much for the support. I didn’t realize you have the 909. Looks so fun. All the sab foil stuff looked good. Wing and board too. Just sent Radiculo the little stupid part of the video where I inserted his face. He’s stoked to come to Hood.
Thanks. It’s my preferred format for this because people can jump around with the chapters or watch straight through and maybe see a brand they hadn’t heard about.
Wow! You packed a lot into this video. Lots of great info. Especially nice since I couldn’t make it this year. Hope to see you in the water soon! -Christian
Gotta keep my reputation as the hard hitting journalist and no BS reviewer of foiling what with all the brand ambassadors posting their fake reviews. It’s tempting to feed brands a bunch of softballs for free gear, but damn ethics keeping me in the poor house. The KTs do look fun. I will have to do a real riding review with LAfoiler.
Great video Rob. Kane has essentially copied what high performance sailplanes have been using for decades with that foil design and the concave bottom section. If I wasn't already invested in Axis I would consider KT for a foil system. I have a KT board and love it! Thanks for the vid!
For some reeason (not sure why) i haven't watched or seen one of your videos in a long time. - set to be alerted to all of them.. Thanks for creating this content.. still watching but it looks like you took some time etc.. So little awsi videos out with exception of winglife this year.. Hopefully grabs you lots more subs!
I launched the How to Wingfoil Series earlier this year and a few other things but they didn’t really catch on, and I even got a few negative nellys in the comments on some of the stuff I did make, so I haven’t been as inclined to make content. Not to mention I think most gear is “good enough” now and I don’t want to just make videos reviewing stuff to sell to people when their foils are fine. We’ll have to reevaluate where we go from here, but know that I really value genuine viewers like yourself! There was a smaller media presence this year and the show itself felt smaller. It could have just been the heat and lack of wind though. Or maybe foiling has hit some growing pains. The winglife guy is a super nice dude and did a great job.
He’s a great guy. It’s definitely one of the interesting new DW foils. Been hearing good things. Those tooth pick tails might be the real cheat code though.
@Alfonso_111 I don’t know the full list, but I know some were like the twins who did really well, and I know even some other pro riders chose to ride them. I think Kai Lenny and Tom Constant… don’t quote me though. They told me but I’ve forgotten exactly who.
They were there but I ran out of steam in the heat and Luca V went to ride instead of talking to me. They weren’t announcing new gear because their new stuff is still unreleased, so nothing new for me to add that isn’t already out in the many team rider videos.
@@dchiffy F-one was there, and I tried to interview Luca V, but he was out riding. Plus, F-One had nothing new to unveil because their new stuff isn’t released to the public yet. I mention them briefly in my Final Thoughts but I was pretty exhausted from the brutal heat at that point. Them, Starboard, and AK are the only ones I didn’t interview this year I think. I also figure that other videos will heavily feature F-One.
That presentation with Axis was great finally someone that can speak without out going a, um so annoying when people speak that way. And the leak is maybe the FireBall see Downwind_Drifter for my comment. "Prototype sup foil run downwind, and what a foil! Mint conditions Axis downwinding, Zhik, Ppc"

I figure there’s plenty of f-one content out there with their current stuff.
@sliekerstar that’s too bad. I’m guessing their apparel is separate from their Windsports gear though. There have been some quality control issues on the wing gear (like the luff handles on the Cyclone V1), but I have been quite happy with my Dakine Cyclone V2s, and I’ve loved their footstraps for years! Let me know if you need contact info for their warranty department, and I’ll try and pass it along. I know they’re working hard to maintain good customer service.
Thanks for including chapters and making it easy to navigate. I can tell a lot of time went into making this.
Yoooo! You are amazing. Thanks for the support! As much time as I could spend and still get it out by the weekend!
