Thank you. The stuff I’m actually interested in.
thanks for watching! 💕
a note about sideloading on kindle: i don't know about android, but on iphone you can sideload files from the file app by clicking share, clicking on the kindle app and sending it to kindle. i've never had to use the kindle email this way.
I'm pretty sure that feature actually uses the kindle email under the hood, but yes, that's one way to do it! send to kindle has a bunch of different integrations
Yes, Kindle cloud storage and sync is convenient. It’s also very convenient for them to stealth edit or delete a title from your library.
Google Drive also supported.
Do you own your books outright on Kobo? Or is it like the Kindle where it's basically a license to read the book, but you aren't allowed to keep it or download a copy to store locally?
I think it depends on the book if it's sold with DRM protection or not, but I'm not 100% sure
Thank you for your perspectives!
thanks for watching! 💕
Great informative video for me who’s only familiar with Kindle. For Kobo, can you download apps (specifically the Kindle app)? Hoping it’ll be an easy way to share/sync my library.
unfortunately not, Kobo has its own ecosystem! for something that you can download apps to, you'd need something like an onyx boox that's basically an android tablet with an e-ink screen
love listening to you rant about shallan and dalinar 😂
pattern is so annoying sorry to the people who like them...

Kindle has the better built-in dictionaries by far! It's also easier to add and then toggle between keyboard languages if you're reading in languages other than English. I'm still looking into how this works on KLC once Nickel Menu, KOReader, and Plato are set up properly. I have reading streaks on my PW 11 Kids Editions, but I'm not keeping tabs.
that is really good to know! i’ve always wondered what the support is like between other languages so thank you for sharing that!
Great review, thanks. I'm a bit torn tbh. I started reading eBooks on my Palm TX about a thousand years ago, then the iPhone came out and I moved to that on the 3rd iteration. Then the iPad came out and I've been using iPads mostly. A month ago though I thought I'd give the Kindle a go, spent the $350 the latest (black and while) one costs in Australia.... I tried it for 12 hours and hated it. It was dull, despite having the brightness up as far as possible and I had to hold the silly thing all the time if/when I wanted to read....and all it does is eBooks! So I sent that back and started looking at what is available out in the wild and discovered the Kobo (which I've had the app for ever since it was released....and hardly used. But....loved the Kobo Libra2 and they're 'only' $360 here, which for colour appeals more, and the buttons....love the buttons. So, now I'm torn. Do I buy the Libra 2 and hope I will love it more than my iPad Mini? ....and start rebuying all the 'keepers' I already have on Kindle? Please help me with my dilemma. My brain hurts trying to be decisive.
Kindle. Some of your adjective choices bother me. English is a very plentiful language. However, thank you for this review.
Hi! Does Kobo have the Voiceview Screen Reader function like on kindle? that's the only reason why I am not switching to Kobo. I have a freelance that involve finishing some books in a certain time, but I do have a 9-5 job 😅 So with that function with Kindle, I could just connect my bluetooth headphones and the screen reader while working. But at the same time, Kobo's annotating function would really be convenient for that said freelance. So I am really torn. Thank you in advance!
@@KendleHardbound I'm not sure since I have an older device from before they even had audio functionality at all, so you'll have to look into whether the newer Kobo's have this! that being said, kindle and Kobo have pretty comparable annotation functionality imo (ie. both can do highlighting and notes)
You have a very sweet cat! 🐈
thank you, she really is!! 🤧
With the calibre software ecosystem doesn’t matter. I just bought the kobo libra color for the stylus and ability to annotate books with multiple colors and being able to write notes directly on the books. Sleep wake covers are a must for me and I’ve never had an issue. I’ve side loaded fonts with no issues. Open Sans is very readable for me. I’m not a fan of serifs.

I have a Kindle Paperwhite Signiture and recently got a Scribe, too. These are my first two e-readers and they have many options I really like, but now I'm considering getting Kobo Libra color. I hear from different sources that Kobo has a lot of good features and that is more customizable and you can repare and replace different parts of the device. I just really wish it had speakersnstead of buttons. Afterwards at some future point I will probably get a Onyx Boox Note Air 3 C or something like it. I like it that you pointed out some of the less commented features. That was very helpful ❤
overall, i really love my kobo but my only nitpick with is that it doesn't have a synch feature so i agree with you with that 😭 as someone who sideloads all of my books, it such a shame that i cannot read it across all my devices and potentially lose all my highlights and notes when i upgrade to a new kobo.
i’m 99% sure i’ve downloaded my annotations from my kobo onto my computer before (iirc it’s like a hidden file or something), which could maybe be an option for when you upgrade to a new kobo! definitely not sustainable or practical for day-to-day use and syncing purposes though
@tammietriestoread oh i havent heard of this before! does this let you sideload those annotations to your new kobo? like it will reflect in the books
love the video! im just wondering if in kindle's annotation system, do they have a filter feature like in kobo where you can choose if you only want to see your highlights or notes?
hmm, i’m not 100% sure since i don’t utilize notes that much so maybe it’s just a setting that i haven’t found yet, but it looks like it’s all just grouped together (bookmarks are separate though)
Another huge thing to note that I just found out is that Amazon is getting rid of the “send to kindle” feature with the newer kindles :(
i had heard they were removing the option to download from your kindle to your computer, not the send to kindle feature, but that's very disappointing if that's true.
I use Dropbox for my files - it's so convenient. I am surprised you think it's unpopular.
The excerpt you read from "These Violent Delights" just ended me at work. I definitely need to read this book. It just made me feel so seen in the hurt of never belonging anywhere.
Also Chinese-Canadian here! This is what I've been looking for my ENTIRE life! I always felt so out of place and in-between cultures. The closest I could get as a teen was Indigenous lit, which is fantastic, don't get me wrong. I love it! But I had to cling to it to feel like I sort of belonged somewhere. More recently with AAPI month and such with local libraries, I would often find more Vietnamese-Canadian writings which are closer still to what I've been searching for. Thank you so much for this video and your recommendations! I am excited to look into all of these!
thank you for this comment, and for reminding me that I need to do an updated version of this video (and to include chinese-canadian authors)! 💕
You picked the wrong month to make this video lol Time for an update
i actually made this video two months ago! as I mentioned in it, I'm a proponent of buying used/using your existing devices so I won't be updating anytime soon 🙂
Thank you so much for all these details, but the best I surprised that your mini flash with glo, i have kobo mini, do you mind tell me how you flashed the glo firmware on mini or just gove me a link for how to do that. Thank you again.
if you google "Kobo mini Glo firmware Reddit" there should be a few threads that talk about it! the process was basically to download the firmware, move it into the right folder, and restart

When I tap on the top of my kobo screen the time is in the upper left corner… 😮
yep, mine does this too! it just doesn't permanently display the time while I'm actively reading the way that my kindle does
@@tammietriestoread oh… ok… well not a big deal for me… but I understand what your saying…
I just wanted to say that I loved this video, I love your profile pic, and I value all the details you shared and your delivery!
aww thank you lovely!! 💕
I honestly am looking into a kobo because of the whole issue where Amazon pulled books and even if you have purchased it, it will disappear from your library. So I’m wanting a device where I can download my purchased ebooks and not worry about them being disappearing lol
that's definitely a larger conversation regarding digital ownership in general - the Kobo store runs into many of the same issues, though there are ways to work around this with methods that aren't fully legal per se 😅
So random, but 10 minutes into the video i realized i could fall asleep to your voice😅, you can drone on and on about nothingness and it'd be cool😊
hahahah thank you, I think? 😂
thank you for encouraging anti-consumer culture to fix and refurbish first 🙌🏼 I constantly feel the pressure to buy brand new in the book community so this is refreshing!
totally agree, and I just hate how companies have made fixing our electronics so inaccessible 😑
Me, a students on a budget, only having a kindle because I won it as a gift from my new bank from their recommendation program watching this: 🤔 I really liked the long-winded way of showing us your devices. I love me a side quest and a background story while getting new info❤🩹
omg I love this for you!! I hope you're getting so much use out of your Kindle 🤧💕
For the ads on Kindle, if you really don't want them, you can pay $20 bucks to get them removed so your kindle can show the book covers instead. But other than that, you get ads otherwise. I'm planning to make the switch from Kindle to Kobo because I feel like I'm potentially wasting money on books I will probably never get to due to the reading recommendations and "we think you might like this..." Like, I just want to read my books without being bombarded with the noise to buy other books!
I stan a DIY queen. You can do this gurl, it'll turn out great ❤❤❤ I live vicariously through you because I'm also delulu when it comes to home fixes.
hahah I wouldn't say it turned out great but it's functional!! 😅
Not sure if I'm to late or not but, few things if it helps.. caulk is applied just around the tub/shower, make sure you use 100% silicone (mold proof/ color of your pickings). tile grout is applied over the tiles, old grout scraper looks like a cuticle cutter, this should taking 20 mins to get rid of all the old grout. The old silicone around the tub/shower should take about 10 minutes to clean up. I believe you can do it yourself. This job would cost around 400 - 700 in new York for reference
this is very good information to know, thank you!!
I have owned a few Kobos over the years, I had the original Kobo from 2011 and I loved it. I used it for years till the D pad stopped working. I then got the Glo HD and had nothing but problems. Had to send it back to get it repaired when it was 8-9 months old. Took weeks to get back then it stopped working again, but since it was over a year old at that point they wouldn't fix it. I decided to try Kindle at that point. I like Kindle, I still have my 2017 one and use it sometimes though it is not my favorite. I do find side-loading books easier on Kindle. I don't use it very often. The few times that I tried it with Kobo years ago it was a pain in the butt. Honestly, I like Kobo's UI better. Recently my library has greatly improved their e book catalog and as a Canadian, that means Kobo is the better option since Kindle Overdrive is US-only. I bought another Kobo about a year and a half ago (Clara 2e) and love it, haven't had an issue with this one. I use it mostly for library books and it works great.
@@Dustyrosepetal totally agree with everything you've said! i loved the Kobo with the dpad, it was my first device, though relatively short lived for me since I accidentally left it out in the rain 😅
oooh this is super encouraging to hear about immortal dark, some of the mixed reviews got me nervous but i like the vibe you are describing here!! and omg yes adolin is def an orange cat rather than a golden retriever, and i am also soooo here for the homoerotic vibes lololol my standouts of september were hell of a witch by rachel aaron (the tear down heaven series is soooo good, highly recommend!) and thank you for listening by julia whelan. also, good on you for not vlogging in october, enjoy the little break!!

52:50 I was also upset by The Blind King’s Wrath especially when I found out the series was shorten to only three books. As I was reading, I kept envisioning what this book would’ve been if it was only book 3 in a longer series. Like I wanted more backstory about the Shvate Five as they were growing up. I wanted to see Adri’s full wrath as he found out the truth. But alas, I will simply create my own story in my head of what could’ve been 😅 I am considering reading Ashok Banker’s backlist books.
yes, exactly! the lost potential of this series is just so sad 😭 and same, they have a huge backlist, though not all of them have been published in Canada, so they can be a bit tricky to find

🚪🚪🚪The City in Glass is definitely the most vibe-y book she has written so far. I finished reading it a couple days ago, andI am still processing what I read. Oddly enough, I liked how slow-paced it was and just followed the demon rebuilding her city. Definitely not meant for everyone, but I hope you will enjoy the audiobook more. I had an eARC and an advanced audiobook, but I preferred my eARC. The narrator was fine, but I loved to read it with my eyes. I look forward to reading Immortal Dark. I have an advanced audiobook from the publisher and purchased a physical copy for a hybrid read. Always appreciate your monthly reading vlogs! 💙
I didn't mind the slow pace and the premise of the book at all! it was really just the technical aspect of the writing itself that wasn't working unfortunately, but audiobooks usually make that easier to ignore 😅 I hope you enjoy immortal dark!
I have borrowed this book from my school's library like that one 'The dark queen rises' i haven't started it yet still came across this vid... I didn't really thought I could get such a great book over there.. Like yk my school's lib is really gross.
