    Ok that window shopping one is WILD I frequently went to my local stores to browse and honestly they get more people in if they look busy. Its helpful to look busy! So wild

      that's so true too, I didn't even think of that

    Great video idea!! Totally agree with you on the last one. Window shopping is totally a thing. Stores themselves will also match competitor's prices because they know there's a possibility that you will shop there and then maybe decide to go somewhere else. Stores know that they're not guaranteed a sale when you walk in the door.

      window shopping is a whole hobby in and of itself, i swear!

    I agree with you about the last one. So long as OP isn't actively wasting the employee's time or creating a mess, I don't understand what the issue is. Now, if they were asking the employees for recommendations then buying elsewhere, that would be rude, but there's no indication that's what they're doing.

    Story 5 is wild! I almost always go to a indie bookstore whenever I travel to a new city and I almost never buy anything. My husband and I also go window shopping all the time (especially during the height of covid when there was nothing else to do!). I love going to Barnes & Noble and reading snippets of some books I’m interested in that have long hold times at the library. I didn’t think I was committing such an offense 😂 there have been a few times where I bought a book from an indie bookstore just to support but I don’t have enough space to do that for all the indies that deserve it!

      Also agreed that that attitude is consumerism to the extreme. If we ever want to get out of the capitalist hellhole we’re in, we need to stop buying things we don’t need, no matter how deserving the seller may be.

      if I had unlimited money I'd buy all the books from indies! but alas 🥲

    WHO are these WEALTHY people calling asshole for just LOOKING at BOOKS thats so wild

  • @stefaniesunday
    @stefaniesunday 6 месяцев назад +1

    Yikkesss 87% of the books I read last year were library books/ebooks and I definitely use bookstores as a way to update my holds list. Either that, or I get the audiobook from librofm. I refuse to take the badge of AH! Nobody is wrong for not spending money, especially if the store doesn't offer the product format you want/need! They need to be mad at capitalism for putting the onus of a business's success in the hands of customers who can't even pay their bills 😭

    Totally agree on the last one. The dogpiling on OP is baffling. I regularly go to bookstores even when I don't have book money and look up books on Libby to see if my local and state libraries have them. Sometimes I go back to the bookstore to buy the physical copy if I really liked it. Bookstores are not gonna die because of window shoppers. Window shopping has been a thing since shopping was a thing.

    Loved this video! Bookish AITA was a great idea.
    I think OP in story #3 should have left out the rating like you suggested. As for the last story, I window shop at big chains all the time and then buy them at my local indie bookseller. I don't waste the employees time because I like browsing on my own. It might make me a jerk but in this economy where inflation is ridiculous? I would rather my money go to local booksellers whose values I know and care about my community rather than big chains who play performative allyship all the time.

    23:59 her having the common redittor experience of feeling identified with OP and defending her point every way she can instead of actually reading the comments, before arguing against the judgment, to understand why the OP could actually be consedered and AH.
    Ir is fine when it happens with something small like this, but it could become pretty scary with people bending morals to do the same and they don’t even try to see reason or even consider others point of view because of how blinded and biased they are.

    • @Helcaloth
      @Helcaloth 6 месяцев назад

      She did read the comments though? And she disagreed with them for very valid reasons. I don't think that's just her personal bias. Many of the comments were setting up completely unrealistic expectations of essentially going into a shop = having to buy a thing, which is not how that works. I don't identify with OP as I buy the majority of my books as physical copies, and I still don't think OP was an AH for browsing. While I agree with your overall point idk that it applies here?

    • @karentorresalfaro3371
      @karentorresalfaro3371 6 месяцев назад

      @@Helcaloth never said it was bad, it is just pretty interesting that she started trying to argue against the result before even knowing why prople thought that way, it happens quite often on Reddit, but usually you give your arguments after knowing why they think in a different way.
      I know she read it after and I also agree that OP is not an AH for what she does. I just didn't come back to correct the comment after I finished the video.

    I have self-published a short stories anthology, and I'm also going to be self-publishing my YA novel soon enough. And it's interesting about this conversation of reading reviews of one's work. I personally have the belief that on social media (especially on insta or twitter), a review that is below 3 stars is probably better to not tag the author? But otherwise I think everyone should be allowed to express their opinions on a book. Even harsh comments came from the reader's true experience. Writers aren't responsible to please everyone with our stories, but thinking a harsh criticism of a work is "hate speech" is utterly laughable. That author sounds privileged and entitled if she believes that getting less than positive reviews is akin to minorities being harassed with actual hate speech.

    • @tammietriestoread
      @tammietriestoread  6 месяцев назад

      oh absolutely, I'd even go as far to say we shouldn't be tagging authors unless it's a 5 star review! there needs to be an understanding and etiquette on both sides for sure

    I can definitely understand why indie bookstore owners are upset by showrooming.... Ultimately I'm in the middle. I agree, browsing is a totally normal thing AND bookstores are not inherently worthy of our money just because we walked in the door... But I can also see how it would crush me if I owned a store and there were people who would come in just to check out the item before they buy it online. Basically, I think it's an emotional situation, not necessarily a moral one.

    Really enjoyed this video! Never would have thought there would be bookish AITA stuff😂 quite fun seeing these ones. And I’m in total agreement with you on that last one. Folks were doing a LOT with that honestly little situation. I don’t really see the issue with doing some window shopping at book stores, as long as commotion is not being made and you aren’t taking up much of the workers’ time🤷🏽

    This was fun. I rarely buy books when I browse. Or at least in recent years. That said, I do remember one time when was a teen, doing what was almost certainly an asshole move, by going to Barnes and Noble and reading nearly an entire book that had just come out in the store, and then putting it back bc I couldn't afford it. I did eventually buy it but idr where I got it. I only ever did that once at least that I can remember.

      @tammietriestoread  6 месяцев назад

      hahaha LISTEN i can't say i also didn't do this growing up at indigo/chapters 🙈 in my defence though they did used to put out chairs and stuff and it was something that people did, so i feel like maybe bookstore culture has just changed over the years?

  • @KathyTrithardt

    Jane in the first story clearly doesn't know the definition of hate speech, or that reviews are for readers.

    • @KathyTrithardt
      @KathyTrithardt 6 месяцев назад +1

      Story 2: NAH
      Story 3: It is meant to be an honest review. They gave it an honest review. If there wasn't a note given to withhold the review until after publication if it isn't your cup of tea, then there is no reason to not have posted a review if they book was read on time. Some folks will read a low review, see it mentions something they personally like, and pick up the book because of that. You can't police reviews, especially when it sounds like OP went out of their way to also give constructive feedback, which wasn't even the assignment - plus, review are for readers, so the author shouldn't have been looking at the review in the first place.

      Story 4: NTA. If you don't want to watch something, don't. It is a rare day when I see someone in my comments I know, and I wouldn't expect anyone to go through my catalogue of over 1K videos if they don't find them to their viewing taste.

    • @KathyTrithardt
      @KathyTrithardt 6 месяцев назад

      Story 5: NTA! Book people love book stores, but that doesn't mean we need to get all of our books from said stores. It's not as though this person is going into a shop, messing it up, and never purchasing there. I can't tell you how many times I have just browsed a book store knowing full well I don't need to buy another book, but just like seeing what they have. I also never take up the staff's time - I'm literally just standing around, not being in the way.
