    I can promise you it’s RL 26, I have a couple of pounds RL 25 and met the velocity exactly at the lowest charge. We also bought a couple of the first boxes of the Hornady 175 Eld-x and hit 3080 fps out of a 26” barrel and same hole group at 100 yards. Subsequent ammo lots went to crap, couldn’t get accuracy and couldn’t get the same velocity 2875. Same exact experience as you. Have tried other powders but couldn’t duplicate the RL 26/25. And yes if you don’t want to reload there is no need for the 7 PRC

    So if I’ve got a 7 PRC with a 26” barrel running 175 ELD-X’s in Peterson brass with h1000, should I go above max book load as long as there are no pressure signs to achieve 100% burn?

    Just a suggestion... have you considered using a ShotMarker instead of the paper or gongs? You could have that running on the screen in real-time along with everything else. The ShotMarker is a very handy way to save time and keep your data organized. The other suggestion would be to use wind flags of some sort. Even just a plastic electric fence post with a strip of surveyor tape ribbon on it is worth having in the field of view near the target and a few other places on the range, YMMV

    I finally got my first 100 rounds shot through my new 7 PRC 24” barrel. I shot 80 ELDX hand loads going 2800 once it settled in. Using ADG brass and H1000 (AR2217)cleaned the carbon out and then shot another 20. Loaded up a test ladder using the now once fired ADG brass, H1000, and Berger VLD 180gn Hunters. I reached max book load with no pressure, doing 2919fps. So loaded up another 5 going up in .5gn increments. I got ejector marks and a slightly stiff bolt lift at 2g over max. Going 3018fps. I really didn’t see a flat spot in the graph more a steady increase. 16 fps was the smallest increase so I loaded up 6 more going back from the load under where I hit pressure and tested them again. On the initial test of 15 shots I didn’t get 2 sequential shots landing any closer than 3/4”. They were all over the place. Then repeat test wasn’t much better. I did get 2 land 1/2” apart but it was mostly vertical but only 9 fps apart. So I think I’ll load 10 up in between them and test that? What do you reckon?

    Also, would it be acceptable to just shoot a 10 shot string? Maybe I missed it or dont remember but is there a specific reason for two separate group?

    • @LittleCrowGunworks
      @LittleCrowGunworks 2 дня назад

      @WCFD5045 it would be acceptable to shoot a 10 shot string. I did 2 separate 3 shot groups because that is more applicable to hunting. Youre unlikely to get more than 3 shots at an animal anyway. But the biggest factor was barrel heat. If you do a 10 shot string, I would do it on steel and record it. So you can see at what point was your vertical stable and when did it go to hell, if at all. You know what I mean? Like maybe it was stable for 3 or 4 shots and then started opening up and after 7 shots, started spraying them, or whatever.

    • @WCFD5045
      @WCFD5045 2 дня назад

      Yeah I see what you’re saying. I would definitely take plenty of time between shots as well to help mitigate that issue.

    • @LittleCrowGunworks
      @LittleCrowGunworks 2 дня назад

      @WCFD5045 if I were doing that and trying to test ammo viability, I would basically take cold bore shots at least 5 minutes apart. Then after 10 shots, go measure the vertical and use my grading system as shown in the videos. Over 1 MOA of vertical at ANY distance is a no go when it's known distance with a perfect rest.

    So, we're discussing vertical POI shift and (mostly) ignoring wind calls. In this situation, how much of an impact is aerodynamic jump having, in group size and poi shift, since you're only using rough wind calls?? I think the rough wind calls are realistic to the average shooter in the field, but for precision wind calls(for readers who don't know) involves a vertical element too. Minute of whitetail under 200, these things aren't really an issue. When you start trying to play the under 1moa game, consistently, especially at longer ranges, especially counting poi shift(which you should), most people will be surprised how much a 3-5mph wind can affect your testing, even at 100. I'm just curious if it's enough difference to make a difference in this application?

    • @LittleCrowGunworks
      @LittleCrowGunworks 3 дня назад

      Good points Joe. For hunters, isolating & tracking vertical point of impact shift of their ammo, is more important than almost any other measurable metric of ammo performance. Even if a small portion of it is attributed to Aerodynamic Jump. In an instance like this, Aerodynamic Jump is a small factor, because the wind was coming from the same direction and only the mph was varying between groups. If the wind shifted 180 degrees between groups, the shift would be enormous. In the case of the two handload groups, I fired the groups under the same conditions (approx 10 mph from 8 o'clock). Meaning the AD-J would be identical and any vertical shift would be purely do to the ammo. Provided my fundamentals were perfect and I wasn't adding vertical with my rear bag support inconsistency. In the case of the 7 PRC 7828 handload, given that those two groups were fired in a right to left wind, and the wind increased between groups 1 and 2. The fact that the second group was higher, would mean that AD-J played a role. But the vertical shift between those 2 groups was something like .345 MOA. AD-J would account for about .105 MOA of that shift. Meaning .240 of the shift was the ammo and me. Likely mostly the ammo. Great question. I don't get into this, because our content is confusing enough for the average viewer. I don't want to make it worse with discussions of AD-J and similar concepts. They don't need to know all the "Why's" that their ammo shoots too tall. Most are satisfied with "if/is" their ammo shooting too tall.

    • @joearledge1
      @joearledge1 3 дня назад

      @LittleCrowGunworks thanks for the detailed reply. In short, it seems like for this application, it's not enough difference to make a difference, compared to other factors that lead to variation in vertical poi shift(assuming that the shooter is not shooting in ridiculous wind conditions), if I'm understanding you correctly. I agree with the approach of KISS, especially in teaching. You have to make the material digestible, and if possible entertaining, for your audience/ students. Keep up the good work Sir.

      @ bullet diameter was dead on between the two. .2843, from the drive band down both were identical. Nose profile is where all the difference came from. Made two profiles in GRT. To get same BLT and pressure between the two different jumps looking like a .36 grain difference in powder for n550. Testing low OBT nodes tomorrow to see how each bullet compares to GRT to calibrate both bullets. Speed should be around 2810.

    I know that this is old, but you saved my 300 NMI rifle. The rifle has been a pain. I finally got a load worked up with N565 that frequently has single digit ES figures. Recently it went to crap. After watching this video I ended up about .012-.015 Longer than my original load and things finally came back together. This morning my 500 yard cold bore was 1 inch high and dead center left to right. I was ready to give up on this problem child. But this really helped me bring it back together.

  • @gregjennen2271
    @gregjennen2271 9 дней назад

    Group size is the most important factor woth regards to external ballistics as it relates to hitting at long range. Certainly more-so than ES/SDs. The majority of what it takes to shoot tiny groups is in the gun. If you have to fiddle fuck with ladder tests trying to shrink your groups, your gun is broken. Essentially, pull a load out of your butt and a good shooter will print tiny groups. Tip, a 10# rifle is grossly too light to shoot well. Especially in the real world in real conditions. We're not all going to do 50hr video series on what we know but i appreciate your effort. Im sure in practice you pick the best powder on sight, find the top and are Essentially done.

      Thanks John, I love the 25 caliber cartridges and the 257 Weatherby specifically. But I think the 6.5's have WAY better hunting bullet choices. That said, I don't think EITHER cartridge is a good choice unless the barrel length is OVER 28 inches. If you want a 26 to 28" barrel, I think the 6.5 Weatherby RPM is the best choice (with Peterson Brass). If you want a 24" barrel, get a 6.5 PRC. If you want a 22" barrel, get a 6.5 Creedmoor and get it over with.

    Good formula. Good to have a line in the sand to test to. Took your advice for the 7 saw. Going to go with the 160 CX. GRT is predicting 2887 as a pretty doable load. Going to buy a box and test to see if it lives up to that. H4350.

      @SpudOutdoors thank you. I think that's a recipe for success. Start at .007 jump if the magazine allows it. Otherwise start at max mag length minus .010 N150, N550 and N540 would be great burn rates for you as well.

    I currently have a 7 saw 26” 8 twist barrel with a type 2 chamber. Wanting a good mono bullet for it. Have you looked at the Cayuga bullets?

    • @LittleCrowGunworks
      @LittleCrowGunworks 14 дней назад

      @SpudOutdoors you WILL NOT get the 170gr to shoot. I couldn't get it stable in a 7 twist 7 Rem Mag. Egg shaped holes and 40% lower BC than advertised at 100yds. The 151gr MIGHT shoot. But even if it does, they don't expand, they tumble. After my experience with the 170 Cayuga, I've completely sworn off the "boutique" monolithic bullets. The theoretical BC advantage, isn't worth the added cost and headache. Due to your magazine constraints, I would shoot a 145LRX or a 150CX and be happy with it. I personally think an 8 twist is marginal for the 160CX and 160 LRX, and very inadequate for the Cayugas. Also, the Cayugas need WAY LESS freebore than is typically used with anyone's 7mm reamers. I think you need to have your own reamer made SPECIFICALLY for the Cayuga, to even ATTEMPT to stabilize them.

    I've been doing the OCW method and it seems to work for me, but I do like this method. It's basically the OCW method with less rounds fired. I like the tinkering aspect of reloading though. It's not like the deer I shoot at less than 100 yards will know the difference in the AL woods, but I do want to get to more long range shooting. I loved giving it a shot out at the NRA Whittington Center range in NM on their silhouette targets. I'm a 7mm fan and in the process of building a 7 PRC on a Weatherby Vanguard action.

    Another great video. Pick something up on everyone. Update on the 270 LRX load. Took it out for mule deer. Shot a buck at 323 broadside and a doe at 350 hard quartering to. Both one shot kills. Both were pass throughs. Both went less than 20 yards from where they were shot. Bullet is awesome! Highly, highly recommend IF it will shoot in your gun and you can keep the velocity up.

    Barnes has always been my go to for hunting ammo. Those bullets are the truth I feel like they are one of the only manufacturers who aren’t over embellishing their velocities as I’ve always found myself to be near or right at box even with slightly shorter barrels then the test variant. Like you I’ve not been impressed with the Hornady ammo. I generally don’t like ELDX just as a hunting bullet but I’ve more or less been forced into it since it’s been the only option until lately. I haven’t tried the CX in my 7 PRC but if shoots anything like my 6.5 CM and 270 then it’ll be abysmal. Been waiting patiently for Barnes factory loads and I’m glad it’s finally here and performing well to boot. Can’t wait to get me a few boxes.

    Really cool to see the process…… the unbiased work/ investment in time that is greatly appreciated!! The 7 PRC was never meant to replace a gun someone already owned… the manufacturers own podcast stated such… seems like a great option for those that want a new 7 mm. I bought mine based on truth and not on the hype or was I steered away by the negativity around the cartridge. Your integrality shined bright throughout the series… excited to see the other results and the reloading series.

    So much great information. Today I will chat about ammo. I have had what I would call, disappointing groups w Hornady’s Precision Hunter in my 7RM, 6.5 PRC, 6.5 CM (Tikka Tac A1) and 6 Creed in Ruger Precision. Groups between 1.5 - 1.75”. Smaller calibers love the Match ammo, but in my 6.5 PRC, a few times I needed to extract a loaded round, the round gets stuck in the chamber (or the bullet in the rifling). I doubt the bullet, because I have been following your method of load development and in hand loads same 147 ELD Match seated at same length as factory, does not have that issue. Took the rifle hunting in August and ran all 40 factory loads through the action and sorted out the ones that got stuck. No other brands of 6.5 PRC had this happen. I have more loads to test now that farming is done on the farm. And am anxious to run them to 600 yards as you have done. More excellent effort and content.

And I think there's a possibility that it might be getting found to a point when you find sequential charge weights that hit in same area.....????
