Today I went into Walmart to show that you can get some fairly decent fly fishing gear. Of course this is budget buying but most people aren't looking to spend their inheritance just to go and have a good time. I talk about inexpensive rods, flies, and other fly fishing essentials. enjoy!

Fishing With Frozen Shrimp Under Kayak!
I am awaiting my first Tenkara rod, a Yari. I have wondered if it would be sacrilege to use an indicator. I have worked out a great indicator using a hopper. I use the small-size rubber football slip cork stopper that comes on the wire loop. You can get 1,200 on Amazon for $9.00. I carefully feed the rubber stopper onto the hook, the wire loop pointing toward the eye of the hopper. Feed the line through the eye of the hopper (without tying) , then through the loop, and pull a foot or so of tippet through. Using the wire loop carefully pull the line through the stopper. Then tie on your nymph. Now, you have a hopper that can easily be moved up and down the line but still have sufficient friction to get a hook set if the fish decides to hit the hopper instead. It is a bit fiddly when you first do it but you get the hang of it pretty quick. The hopper makes a more natural presentation than most indicators.
That firist fish is a pikeminnow aka squafish, not a whitefish :)
Whip finisher instead?
I have a whip finish video that I made sometime 2 or 3 years ago.
🌴So like you I don’t think you have to spend big money to enjoy saltwater fly fishing , I have a bunch of fly rods from 5 wt to 12 wt , the ( new ) 12 wt is an ugly stick 9’ with a Okuma 11-12 wt reel and a Orvis line on it , total cost 🤔about $230 bucks , I also bought a new 9-10 wt Cortland combo from Walmart it had backing and a floating WF line on it for $70 bucks , my most recent buy was an 8 wt Hurricane- Redbone - 9’ - 2 pc rod for $15 bucks looks new at a flea market and a temu 8 wt reel for $10 bucks total $25.00 ( the line cost more than the rod and reel ) 🫲🏼😳🫱🏼 the backing and line a Cortland 8 WTF floating line was $27.00 - total $52.00 dollars and it casts great ! I think that there is a lot of hype with the big dollar brands , and I’ve never had any of the fish I catch complain about being caught on low budget fly fishing stuff yet 👍🏼😆. Tight lines !
Thanks for that great message I agree with you!
Have you landed any fish on it now? How did it perform?
Yes, I really like it it's definitely worth the money!
That sea trout was nice
Hey thanks! Appreciate you checking it out.
You traded Idaho rainbow trout for Florida sea trout!
Exactly...LOL
Exactly! Ha!!
Hi Robbie, they taste good !!! There is a woman around Stuart Fl that goes along the docks and boats and I was surprised, she was getting Snook !! Not to big maybe 4lbs but they run. She's on RUclips and when you get past the bikinis she's a get fisherman !!!
Awesome! Thanks for the info..
A monster bluegill.😀
Time for a longer handle rubber net. You’ll be much happier.
For sure!
What exactly makes a fly, “skid”?
I don't know..lol
Use corn or navy peas to catch talopia theyre veggie fish
Sounds good thanks!
Bluegill talopia have rubber mouths
Yes, Since then I have discovered that.. thanks for the comment!
Robbie, Take some time to read a little more about tenkara. I don't think you have done your homework on what tenkara is. Your points about tenkara were a mixed bag of half truths and fiction. You may fish your tenkara rod any way you wish. But please remember that fishing tenkara is something very specific. You did cover this in you comments with regard to mountain streams and trout. I too have fished tenkara on a lake / pond. In those cases I would never say I was "fishing tenkara" however "fishing a lake with tenkara." You also said "Technically tenkara isn't fly fishing.. Not that anybody is keeping track." Wrong. Tenkara predates western fly fishing and is absolutely a form of fly fishing. Consider doing a little homework as I said and understand that when we don't use words with the right definition we run the risk of misinformation. I hope that those who watch this video will do their own deeper study into tenkara as it offers a very wonderful way to fly fish. You killed it with the talapia and wow! You were worried about the line.. I was worried about your rod. :) Best wishes, Dennis
Thanks for the insight and I appreciate you commenting.
@@robbiesflytyingchannel Your video was featured on Tenkara Angler Magazines "Sunday Riffles" I hope that you continue to explore tenkara even if there aren't any mountain streams near you. Had to say something because I stand with the integrity of the form. Best wishes! Tilapia are good eating on tacos. :) Not sure about pond fed ones.
@dennisvanderhouwentenkarap3861 Wow, Thanks for telling me that Dennis I really appreciate it!
Steve, I think you're right and that is by far the biggest blue gill I have ever caught!
That’d be a large bluegill dude!
I researched it and I think it could be a Tilapia but you also could be right.
I’ve caught many large (male) bluegill just like that in California, they fight like crazy!
Maybe you should chum the area, then put the GoPro in for some shark footage! Or better yet, “Robbie’s scuba diving channel!”
Ha!! No way, I'm not going down there!
Definitely a shark at the end
Yes for sure!
Threadfin Herring..... Spots are the tell tail If you really want to see reel big fish drop near the center span of the Frankenstein in August and you should see 20 to 50 lb. Black Drum!!😎
Hey Wes, good to hear from you and thanks for the info! I will be posting every Wednesday and Sunday morning now.
Nice job Robbie. Looks like fun
Thanks, these Tilapia are everywhere!
Tilapia are veggie eaters. Kernels of canned corn or bright colored marshmallows.
Amazing fish 🐟 They don’t start jumping until you touch them, tricky!
Very true!
Ya know, those make for excellent ceviche
The problem is the water looks pretty gross so I'm afraid to eat them. Lol
Those are like giant prehistoric bluegill!
Ha!! That's exactly what they look like!
Nice job
Thanks dude!
Thanks dude!
I constantly overlook Walmart for fishing supplies, but they always have good deals
Right? Sometimes they even have really good flies.
That’s actually a decent selection compared to California. Everyone just steals everything here. Kinda sad..
Right, that is kind of sad. Walmart also gets some great flies sometimes..it's surprising.
Robbie! Glad to see you’re back to tying again. Hope you’ve been well!
Thanks! I'm trying to reply to all messages and just found yours. I appreciate you checking things out and yes, doing great down here in Florida. Later!
Hey Robbie , maybe you should try a top water popper for bass!
It's a good idea but I've tried them in these ponds and they don't really work. Lol
Bummer! Mouse or frog maybe?
I always love fishing for bass with plastic worms rigged Texas style with a light cone weight pegged to the line with a toothpick. Makes for a super weedless and snag free setup! BTW Robbie, ya gotta start grabbing the bass by their bottom jaw so you won’t catch a dorsal spine! And it kinda “paralyses” them so they stay still
Awesome, good idea!
Awesome!❤ love the excitement
Thanks!
Awesome! 🐠
Ur having fun
Cool
What part of Florida u live? U miss Idaho yet?we live in Athol Idaho and thought about moving to Florida.. not sure yet
Hi, I live in Tampa (Oldsmar, Westchase area). Thanks for checking it out.
That was a big guy! Those dorsal spines look painful!
Steve, It's unbelievable how sharp they are but this is such a great discovery! I do think I can catch them on dry flies I'm going to go out there this afternoon and see how it works.. it is so fun catching them!
I’ve eaten tilapia but never fished for them. I googled tilapia diet and it looks like they’re vegetarian mostly, but you caught them on worms so I don’t know! Carp are vegetarian too and I know you can catch them on the fly. I think people use streamers for carp, don’t know about drys, good luck! Since they eat algae, maybe try an olive wooly bugger!
Ya, I researched it also. You can you can catch them on peas, corn, and bread balls also. I do see them come up to the surface eating little bugs and plus it seems like they spend most of their time near the surface so I'm going to try it for sure today.
Nice! Looks like the flies we used for sockeye salmon on the Kenai River in Alaska
Awesome, did they work?
Absolutely! They only allow sockeyes to be taken by fly, whether your rod/reel is a “fly rod” doesn’t matter as long as your terminal tackle is a fly. You fish them with a fairly heavy weight and about 3 or 4’ of leader that keeps the fly close to the bottom.
@stevewalcott9546 Wow, that's interesting..thanks for the info!
Cool shots of the squid! Are those whale sounds or something else through most of the first half of the video? Can’t tell
Those are just "weird" sounds. LOL
Holy Smoke!! Welcome back
Ha, thanks! Plus I still need to put tying videos on. These days I do a few different things although they all have to do with fish and water. Lol..
Looks like now you know where to fish!
Exactly..Lol
I have literally been fishing this hole since I was 8 y o, 35 years ago. I know where you are boys. Last time was in August, 5 am got into a lot of bull trout and rainbows. It's a nice spot.
Awesome, ya it's a great spot!
Whenever my family would go to the keys for vacation I would come home with a stuffed puffer fish that I would hang in my bedroom. Such a cool decoration. I’m 37 now and kinda wanna get a few for above my tying station at my house.. 🤣
Ha!! That's great..
We miss you in Idaho
Hey thanks! Sometimes I miss it there also I think that's why I'm re- posting some of my old videos.
Good times Robbie! Are you missing Idaho?
Sometimes.. I think that's why sometimes I repose my old videos. Lol
At first I didn’t think that the visibility would be very good, but surprisingly, it wasn’t bad! Wish the sea trout would’ve taken the shrimp!
Hey Steve, just found your comment. Yes! I was thinking the same thing. I'll be doing more of these types of videos along with the tying and fishing videos. Thanks for always giving support!
Crazy footage!
Time to break down and get yourself a legit (baitcaster/ casting rod), Bass fishing rig Robbie! You can use it for salt water too.
Not a bad idea! By the way get ready for some really cool videos. I'm gonna be dropping my go pro under my kayak, under bridges, etc.. it's gonna be amazing!
That is insane, what a catch man!!!
Thanks, ya I was out of my mind that day! Lol
Awesome fish dude! Glad you got it on video!
Thanks Steve!
Good memories seeing you two rascals on the river
Ya exactly, I basically posted it because the memories are so good.
Rainbow, looks great. Tight lines.
Thanks!
