What is the EYE-PHONE?
The Eye-phone was VR before VR existed. In fact, the actual term 'Virtual Reality' was coined by the creator himself!
In this video I give a brief overview of Jaron Lanier and the company he founded with Thomas G. Zimmerman in 1984. That company was VPL Research (Virtual Programming Languages) and was among the first to be focused on creating virtual reality hardware and software. Jaron Lanier is also credited with coining the term, 'Virtual Reality'!

PC or PSVR2? - Which is the best platform to play No Man's Sky in VR?
Просмотров 3,2 тыс.8 месяцев назад
I decided to revisit No Man's Sky on my PC with the Quest 3 and see how it runs these days via Virtual Desktop. I've previously mentioned how the PSVR2 is (on balance) the best way to play NMS currently, but perhaps I was too hasty in that assessment? My first experience of Elite Dangerous in VR (RTX 4080, Pimax Light headset) was disappointing. Input from the wireless controllers was not supported and my position in the virtual cockpit was right in the middle of the seat, leaving me thrashing about trying to reposition myself so that I could see the controls. I've always had problems with control bindings in ED, and it seemed that it had struck again. With some tweaking of the bindings I was able to get limited control with keyboard and mouse, but I have a Thrustmaster T16000M and should be able to use it at least, but no go so far. It all looked great though!

    Amazing how things progress and today, in many respects, we still have the same issues, computer hardware can't keep up with newer high res HMDs like the Crystal (Light) etc, and the resolution has to be turned down for most titles to get a decent frame rate on the mighty 4090 with a high end CPU.

      It looks like Squadrons doesn't have any native OpenXR implementation (if my understanding is correct). It uses OpenVR and therefore requires SteamVR. However, you could try OpenComposite in order to convert it to OpenXR although this isn't guaaranteed for every game. Incidentally, you can check if a game has native OpenXR or OpenVR implementation by going into the directory of the game and seeing if it contains the necessary api files for each one.

    Doesn't the XR2 chip handle the tracking? All I hear is people complaining about the tracking on the crystal light with SLAM. It's using up CPU resources which causes very bad tracking. I have the OG Pimax Crystal and its tracking is perfect.

    • @ImmersedRobot
      @ImmersedRobot Месяц назад

      I believe the XR2 chip does handle tracking on the OG Crystal (although I can't get that 100% confirmed). Regardless, if that's the case, then Pimax are relying on the underlying SLAM developed by Qualcomm, which might simply be more advanced than the SLAM developed by themselves on the PC side of the Crystal Light. The actual impact of SLAM on a desktop CPU will be minimal and I doubt that would impact tracking performance in any noticeable way. It's more likely that the Qualcomm (XR2) SLAM algorithm is simply better than the (presumably) Pimax developed SLAM software on the PC side... a lot of speculation here of course.

      When I made this video, the game could run slightly better in most areas. Although the continuous updates are great, some of them do tend to tank performance every now and again. However, in this video (ruclips.net/video/DYp6F2tNJa0/видео.htmlsi=sQwQJkumiRu9J-Gh) which I published a few days ago, I demonstrate a mod which might help (possibly). It unpacks certain game files, effectively removing load from the CPU and improving performance as long as you have NMS installed on a fast SSD. It might be worth a try, but read how the mod works first before deciding.
