  • The 72Hz refresh rate option in the Pimax Crystal is going to be released in an upcoming firmware update. I received access in order to give it a try, and am actually a little shocked at how much it allows me to push the resolution in Elite Dangerous on my humble RTX 3080!

    I'm always surprised how lowly you speak of the 3080. It's a powerful card relative to most of the market. My 1080ti is still going strong :) I'm hoping one day to grab a second-hand 3090.

    • @ImmersedRobot
      @ImmersedRobot  10 месяцев назад +1

      You’re absolutely right, and it’s more just getting affected by reading the Pimax subreddit too much. Anything below a 4080 is considered pointless on there (at least that’s my impression).

    • @ImmersedRobot
      @ImmersedRobot  10 месяцев назад +2

      @@adrenalinejunkie3828 To clarify my point. Spending time on the Pimax subreddit, the impression is a 3080 is not suitable for a Crystal. On this exact point, my opinion is that it's probably the minimum possible baseline for that particular headset. A 4080/4090 is recommended to achieve the full benefit of that headset in 2023.
      I think the original comment was more about how I seem regard the 3080 as being 'lowly' in general. So on that point, I was agreeing that I shouldn't necessarily do that. Although I mentioned the Pimax subreddit in my reply, drawing it back to the Crystal, which was probably a mistake as I was blurring the two points and not making either clear.

    • @vtidsvr4674
      @vtidsvr4674 10 месяцев назад +1

      I don't see how the price of the headset has anything to do with it. I agree for this specific headset most would gravitate to a high 40 series card, or 3090/ti perhaps. But he has mentioned the 3080 in the same way when using other headsets too, including Quest 2. I wasn't referring to any one particular headset, I was just mentioning that he speaks fairly lowly of the 3080 in general imo. I think he realised that at the end of the video also. It's very much a high-end card. @@adrenalinejunkie3828

    The issue with running 3.8 is that it's a dead branch. You have to be running 4.0 or Odyssey.

    • @ImmersedRobot
      @ImmersedRobot  10 месяцев назад

      Yes, if you want the live game, then 4.0 is now essential. I'm mostly happy with the legacy 3.8 to simply explore and play the game away from the live version.

    @antjones2281 10 месяцев назад +2

    I have a 4090 and I only run 72. I'd rather push the res to native and then push the graphics as high as they can go over framerate.

    • @ImmersedRobot
      @ImmersedRobot  10 месяцев назад

      I think it comes down to providing more options if nothing else. Those who favour framerate can push that aspect. Those who favour resolution and push that. I'd love even more refresh rate options, if that's even possible.

    Odyssey is not worth the money or hard drive space. I need to dust off my controller and get back into the cockpit using the Pico 4. I seem to be getting better frame rates in that than my vive and index. But then I upgraded my whole system earlier this year. Oh! I'd class a 3080 as mid-range, and my 4070 is in the same class.

    Should I be setting my in game sync and frame limits to 72 if possible to match what my headset is set to? (Q2 in Odyssey).

    • @ImmersedRobot
      @ImmersedRobot  10 месяцев назад

      You can certainly try to alter those settings, however they have no affect when playing VR to the best of my knowledge. I notice no difference when altering them myself, and I'm certain they're ignored when playing in VR since the sync setting in particular shouldn't make any sense regarding how the display is updated in VR headsets.

    • @jellowiggler
      @jellowiggler 10 месяцев назад

      @@ImmersedRobot Thanks. I was getting caught up in the game frames dropped in the Q2 performance overlay. I don't think that is a valid or useful number. It was telling me I was dropping hundreds or thousands of frames in static menus, maybe at the rate between what flat screen was rendering at and VR. I think of more importance is the latency (around 45-55ms for me) and the compositing dropped frames. I see the perf mon you had up in your Q2 videos was doing the same thing in your vid.

    • @ImmersedRobot
      @ImmersedRobot  10 месяцев назад

      @@jellowiggler Regarding the application dropped frames which is being displayed in the Oculus performance overlay, you need to remember that it also counts the huge number of dropped frames when loading the instance of Elite, or when you get those sharp spikes from using the frame shift drive etc. During normal gameplay, the dropped application frames can be easily seen from the performance graph where it spikes below the bottom, and this is where you can see if you're generally running at a good framerate (although occasional frames might still be dropped).
