How to Draw Nicolas Cage SUPERMAN in a Realistic or Cartoon Style
Join the FREE weekly challenge here: retrosuperheroart.wordpress.com
Nicolas Cage was only a few weeks away from playing Superman in a movie by Tim Burton before the movie was cancelled. Oh how cool that movie must have been. So let’s draw Nice Cage Superman! I love the realistic movie poster painter Robert E McGinnis who did those Roger More and George Lazenby James Bond posters, so I’m giving his style a go, kind of in the Steve Rude, Alex Ross style. Using Photoshop and Wacom Intuos as usual with the Kyle T. Webster brushes.

Comic Book inking Master Study - Dan Green over a Marc Silvestri Wolverine

Silvestri drew the beauty, but Dan Green inked it to perfection. I'm taking on the challenge of inking the splash page of Wolverine 34. Learned a lot on this, most of all how fun inking can be. hey thanks for corecting the shadow and if u whant to know for the kid i try to draw nicolas cage second son
Oh, Kal-El! cute!
Thank you for correcting my drawing, yes i was a little bit busy at that time so i did almost like an imagination drawing, after i ended drawing i noticed all the mistakes, well, better than nothing
My pleasure. Yup, we all look at our drawings the next day and see things we didn't while we were drawing, but we get slightly better with each drawing so please keep it up.
Thank you for showing my work! Couldn’t get a full colored piece of work as I was a little busy. To clarify, the shadows are based off the suit tests. The room had two light sources, one from the right and one from the left. I wanted to make the costume reflective like you see in the photos. That’s why I indicated the highlights on the ribcage muscles. I agree that there should be highlights that separate the form more clearly. Especially near the collar bone on his left side. Great video as always!
Thanks! O yeah, I see it now. That sure was a shiny suit indeed. Always tricky to turn something into patches of shadows.
How can i participate the chalenges?
@@criss-8 There's a link in the description, and everything is explained there ;)
@@samuelvicenzo6181I don't know if it works, I did the steps and didn't receive anything
Thanks for the tips, I really need to practice drawing muscles more.
My pleasure! The 1960s-70s did the heroes with less definition, so it might be a good in between step to study to get familiar with the placement. The Pre-Arnold age.

Do you have one on Shinkiro?
Oh yeah, the SNK Capcom artist, not yet but I might at some point. Another Streetfighter video is on my list.

Thanks!
Do the images need to be digital drawings or can pen and paper drawings also be posted?
Everything is fine, you can print out the page I sent and draw on it, or start on a new piece of paper. Then just scan the drawing or even just take a picture of it and send that to me.
@retrosuperheroart2202 well, i don't have a computer, so i think taking a picture would be the most easy method
@@LuisFelipe-r4o sure!
@@retrosuperheroart2202 just one more question, all i have to do is send to your email?
(sorry, I didn't see this till just now) Click the link to my website in the description of this video, and there on the right there is a box where you can enter your name and mail. Then I'll send you a png with the challenge each week. Hope you like it!
Oh, awesome video! Shadows are difficult and I wonder how you know how long a shadow an object will cast. Hey, though, suggestion for the next video, I was watching the video here and wondering whether you had less energy with your voice, then realized the music was the problem (my opinion, anyway) that kinda muted the energy, affecting how I paid attention, so thought I'd mention here.
Good question, I went over it pretty quickly in 2:07 so the line from the light down to the ground where it hits the ground line would be the length. In the samples like the explosion and gun guy I eyeballed it because there were no surroundings in perspective. Personally I hardly think about perspective, in JRJR's pencils I see he drops the whole grid oldschool for almost every panel. Now that's dedication. Thanks for mentioning the music issue. I'm on it.
This is an absolutely excellent video, excellent analysis and very practical
Thank you so much. I'm glad I could help while practicing myself.
I loved participating, and it's okay, my Nickname is in Portuguese so it's okay, I couldn't pronounce it. I'll participate in the next one too, I'm

@@retrosuperheroart2202 Yeah I wasn't sure what to make of that bottom line lol, because it was in your original outline you gave us. I kind of started to make it the 3D window, but I wasn't sure

Sorry, I wasn’t able to turn in my picture I was actually busy working on my own comic book pages for the first issue of the story that I’ve been working on for a very long time and it seems like for me if I’m wanting to do these pages right I would have to Have the roughs and breakdowns done in like a very light or non-photo blue from my computer before I start penciling in the actual image

I've done a handful a Frank Miller videos but not specifically Dark Night. I'm sure I'll get round to it eventually ;-) I especially want to put it next to the DK2 one and compare. Maybe for a Lynn Varley video.

@1:24 Ah yes, the classic cobra shape.

dude you are fantastic at analyzing composition and flow, stuff i didnt even think about until watching
My pleasure! Always fun to nerd out :-)
I've read the same comics as the ones you covered in this video, but I never noticed any of the things you pointed out in this video. I really appreciate being shown all of the artwork details in your videos. I wish I were more motivated to analyze comic artwork on my own, but I open a comic and I don't know what I'm supposed to look for. I'm curious how you got started.
Thanks for the compliment! Honestly I think it's because in the 90s I didn't have the internet so re-read the limited amount of comics I had. Also tracing and copying the art to learn how to draw. I remember realizing that Quesada was doing his own version of Mignola in the legs. That was a major point of starting to categorize these styles. And McFarlane, that guys art was just so magic and different, I just had to know how he did it, so putting his comics next to others to see what he did different.
@@retrosuperheroart2202 thanks for taking the time to explain how you started. It's very helpful.
@@mythebe My pleasure!
I am a huge fan of your video they realy inspriring but i have noticed something important you know how to reprduce an art style and add details and anatomy yet they require some structure i know i dont come from a place to say somthing like this but i am simply sugesting you could try to take a figure drawing course like the one proko has on youtube to more or less add the structure the art requireses
Yup, an artist is never done learning. I realize that and I am on it. Always sketching and working on my realistic drawing as well. Thanks for the tips!
Her butt is too flat. I saw how you compensated for her lesser side. You should’ve done that for the bigger one instead.
Yeah, lol, looking at it now she needs some more booty, it's 90s, not 80s after all...
this is just what i needed! I love action movies with sick fight scenes and I am working on my own comic so this is an immense help! thanks for making this!
Thanks! We’re all standing or the shoulders of giants ;-)
Wanna say I think you’re a master at style study! I wanna study artist’s, yet while I can tell things are different, I can’t articulate those differences. You pinpoint things wonderfully and help teach those techniques simply and efficiently!
Thank you for the compliment. I had a really great art teacher in high school who was super openminded. He’s pull up a classic piece of art and just have us talk. Anything goes. Of course with leading questions, but it kind of planted the seed I guess.
Hell yeah, just bought a bunch of Frank Miller comics, now I’m even more hyped for them. Would love to see you do a full on style/study video of his art.
Cool man, enjoy! Have you seen the video where I so the FM daredevil and Sin City style? Have a look at the Dark Horse Legend playlist where I collected all the Frank Miller ones.
@ will do brother
I love how Frank wasn’t too gratuitous with his Splash pages in the beginning. He really warmed us up and earned each one. Thanks for the tips about the action shots. I can see where my fight scenes are lacking that dynamic effect of wrapping around the strikes
Yes very good point, the build up to the splash page made it worth it. I’m so glad I could help!
Best to find Silvestri’s pencils and practice over those. You’re pretty much just laying down black over Dan Green’s inks.
Lol very true. In a perfect world I’d have both the pencils and the inks. That would be awesome.
The best way to learn to draw legs is to look at pictures of actual legs. Fashion magazines, bodybuilding magazines, even looking at your own for reference. It’s best to do that than looking at comic book stuff which is greatly exaggerated.
Photos are very useful but they usually miss the dynamic exaggerated movement of comics. For anatomy you’re right, its been a few decades since my legs looked like Supermans though … ;-)
If you really want to really dive deep into his mind and thought process you should check out Holy Terror
Oh wow, I had never heard of that one. I’ll check it out, thank you for the tip!
@@retrosuperheroart2202According to Miller, the comic would have been a "piece of propaganda". Do you like state funded propaganda? Funded by the friends of Israel.... Personally I don't think comics in this day and age should be used in this way. What's next batman dropping bombs on children fleeing isreali solders? I know wonder women did that in real life but we all have to draw a line, otherwise it all falls into propaganda trash pile.
