Frank Miller is a genius at many things. Most people would note him for his writing, but man do I love his fight scenes from the Wolverine mini series.
Thank you to the many participants of this weeks challenge, which was redrawing that Frank Miller Superman Batman punch using just the stick figures I sent out last week. How Classic and Retro can you get?

The tools I use are Adobe Photoshop and a Wacom Intuos digital pen.
Oh yeah thank you for the feedback btw! The sketch is plastic man, it’s why he’s got a giant hammer hand. See the exaggerated perspective makes sense cus hes a stretchy dude.
Oh yes, I thought it could be him. I only know him from that Frank Miler Dark Knight sequel. That crazy stretchy dude. Cool!
@ yeah it’s a reference to that. I thought it was funny because I’ve read Plastic Man in Injustice. I thought it’d be funny for him to rebel against that Batman.
@@Otis_. Funny character, fits much better with the powers than Mister Fantastic, DC vs Marvel : 1-0 ;-)
6:41 Thanks for the criticism, something felt a little off to me about the image. I originally though that I should have extended wolverines leg further, but your right, the punch isn't very clear if you don't already know the homage.
Still very cool though, but you're right, maybe having that other leg that's just a little black shadow now peak though a bit more or even cross and come out on the left like a twist would have worked as well.
Absolutely LOVE Frank Miller's Art AND Stories.
His writing is so good his art gets forgotten sometimes, but he keeps evolving like a genius.
this is just what i needed! I love action movies with sick fight scenes and I am working on my own comic so this is an immense help! thanks for making this!
Thanks! We’re all standing or the shoulders of giants ;-)
I do called Frank Miller "The Martin Scorsese Of Comic Books" also great great video on his fight sequence do enjoy his fight sequence in his comic books and graphic novels he's one of the best comic book artist that know how to draw good fight sequence also a nice Toriyama Inspired tribute art at 8:04 i'm glad every artist still replicate his Dragon Ball art style in their artwork i'm they still honor this goat of Anime and Manga Retro also Happy 40th Anniversary to Dragon Ball Retro thank you for this video.
Yes, very good comparison with Scorsese, gritty, street stories with tough language. Good stuff!
dude you are fantastic at analyzing composition and flow, stuff i didnt even think about until watching
My pleasure! Always fun to nerd out :-)
I love how Frank wasn’t too gratuitous with his Splash pages in the beginning. He really warmed us up and earned each one.
Thanks for the tips about the action shots. I can see where my fight scenes are lacking that dynamic effect of wrapping around the strikes
Yes very good point, the build up to the splash page made it worth it. I’m so glad I could help!
Wanna say I think you’re a master at style study! I wanna study artist’s, yet while I can tell things are different, I can’t articulate those differences. You pinpoint things wonderfully and help teach those techniques simply and efficiently!
Thank you for the compliment. I had a really great art teacher in high school who was super openminded. He’s pull up a classic piece of art and just have us talk. Anything goes. Of course with leading questions, but it kind of planted the seed I guess.
Retro, your tip is really helpful. Yesterday, I was practicing a bit using Kirby's style as an example, and I followed exactly what you suggested. I even decided on the line variation I wanted, already in the sketch, just before moving on to the inking. Now, the challenge has evolved into creating scenes with the goal of maybe making a full page, and so on. I'm really happy to see the challenge growing more and more. Congratulations, Retro! :D
Awesome! Todd McFarlane said in an interview he keeps his pencils very loose and then makes decisions with the inking, but for us mortals it's probably a good idea to know what to do in advance, hehe. And I saw the Spider-Man 300 cover in an expo once, there's a ton of white-out on it, so I guess it's just a matter of where you put the time in, before or after.
@@retrosuperheroart2202 Yesssss. I've seen Erik Larsen drawing, and it's just the same. But who knows, maybe one day we'll reach 2% of their skills, lol
@@retrosuperheroart2202 I wish I could find that image of the Spider-Man 300 cover
It's on google images but the white-out is not that visible in a picture unfortunately. (google image search for "spiderman 300 original" the black and white 1310 - 2048 dpi one, and you can see he cut and pasted those layers of paper on each other!!) lol let's go for a bit more than 2%
@@retrosuperheroart2202 Wow, I just realized that. Have you seen the original art in person? That's awesome. I looked it up on Google, but unfortunately, I couldn't spot those details. Still, just knowing about them is really cool
Hell yeah, just bought a bunch of Frank Miller comics, now I’m even more hyped for them. Would love to see you do a full on style/study video of his art.
Cool man, enjoy! Have you seen the video where I so the FM daredevil and Sin City style? Have a look at the Dark Horse Legend playlist where I collected all the Frank Miller ones.
@ will do brother
Getting so many entries!
I know! So much fun to see all the variations.
I've read the same comics as the ones you covered in this video, but I never noticed any of the things you pointed out in this video. I really appreciate being shown all of the artwork details in your videos. I wish I were more motivated to analyze comic artwork on my own, but I open a comic and I don't know what I'm supposed to look for. I'm curious how you got started.
Thanks for the compliment! Honestly I think it's because in the 90s I didn't have the internet so re-read the limited amount of comics I had. Also tracing and copying the art to learn how to draw. I remember realizing that Quesada was doing his own version of Mignola in the legs. That was a major point of starting to categorize these styles. And McFarlane, that guys art was just so magic and different, I just had to know how he did it, so putting his comics next to others to see what he did different.
@@retrosuperheroart2202 thanks for taking the time to explain how you started. It's very helpful.
@@mythebe My pleasure!
underrated video fr
Thank you for watching!
13:04 is the best by a COUNTRY MILE. like, it LOOKS like actual comic art.
Yeah, I love that one. Caps face is sooo Frank Miller, and the hair on Tony lol
The real master of fight sequences is Yusuke Murata. His fight scenes are genuinely insane
Yes! I love his stuff! Even made a video about him as well : First Time reading ONE PUNCH MAN ! the famous MANGA
This channel has helped me with my art SO MUCH!!!! By any chance could you do a deep dive on the Dark Knight Returns art style? That’d be really cool!
I've done a handful a Frank Miller videos but not specifically Dark Night. I'm sure I'll get round to it eventually ;-) I especially want to put it next to the DK2 one and compare. Maybe for a Lynn Varley video.
@ That would be awesome! Thanks!
You should check out Yuto Suzuki's work : Sakamoto Days. It has the best fight choreography in the modern Comic/Manga industry (and he published this series on weekly)
Oohhh looking at Sakamoto Days now. Reminds me of JoJo a little. Great clothing folds. Thanks for the tip!
Very good fantástic.
Thank you!
espectacular
Thanks!
If you really want to really dive deep into his mind and thought process you should check out Holy Terror
Oh wow, I had never heard of that one. I’ll check it out, thank you for the tip!
@@retrosuperheroart2202According to Miller, the comic would have been a "piece of propaganda". Do you like state funded propaganda? Funded by the friends of Israel.... Personally I don't think comics in this day and age should be used in this way. What's next batman dropping bombs on children fleeing isreali solders? I know wonder women did that in real life but we all have to draw a line, otherwise it all falls into propaganda trash pile.
Very cool You don't happen to have another channel called Beerdy on Bruce Lee do you?
lol, I went to check, yeah, I guess that's also a European dude, can't quite put my finger on the exact country from listening to the accent though. I'm from Belgium by the way.
@@retrosuperheroart2202 Excellent work. Love it
i thought the eyes was edited cuz I draw eyes like that sometimes.
I'm Batman! 's eyes ;-)
You really sound like BEERDY
Dude, your kung fu animation channel is awesome. If anybody else reads this, go check it out. That big boss one with the orange is giving me Saul Bass / James Bond movie intro vibes. Love it!
@@retrosuperheroart2202 Right on man. Thank you so much. Do you think you can do a review on it. It would help me out.
If a fitting topic comes along for sure!
u think this is peak? read manga.
I live in Japan so I’m very aware of Manga. You’re right, their action is next level. The bending of the characters with the action lines. I made a few videos about that as well. If you’re interested I have a manga playlist. When Joe Mad did his manga inspired stuff it felt very new in the Marvel universe somehow, but theres always been crossover I think.
I am a manga reader too, but disrespecting other work is not good mann. Yeah the fights in Mangas are way cool, but I really like the Frank miller's fight sequence. It is different from other comics. Indie comics writers should take notes to make more fighting comics .
This is maybe not as peak as Sakamoto Days fight sequence. but it is still peak. So, don't disrespect others work 😊
