Cabin Life - You Call This Winter?
Cabin Life - You Call This Winter
It has been a warm, wet, slushy winter so far. We could really use a cold snap to lift our spirits and make life a little easier. The woods are soaked to the bone.
Our cabin is nestled in canyon between two mountains, with snow line just hovering above us. It snows, it melts, it re-freezes. Just taking it day by day, and hoping for some bonafide winter weather!

Thanksgiving Trail Cam Dump - Crazy Whitetail Rut In this video I am sharing the highlights of our annual whitetail rut trail camera collection. Bushcraft in Tall Country - First Snow of Winter Today, fall is officially over, and winter takes hold. I know the calendar on the wall says otherwise, but today there is a winter storm warning and a bomb cyclone headed our way. Campfire Blacksmithing -- Making a Fire Poker
Просмотров 223Месяц назад
This is the first time I've tried DIY blacksmithing on an open fire. With some bone dry hardwood and a nice light breeze, I had a lot of fun creating some new fire pokers for our woodstoves. The materials I used were just junk I had laying around, and I used various non-blacksmith tools. This would be easy with a modern forge and a big anvil, but the campfire and an old chunk of railroad iron g...
Building a Shaker Style Kitchen Broom from an Old Old Fence Post

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! I had to laugh at the wood bin with the pulls at your wood cutting station. That was one of three or so under-bench drawers my dad made by hand for our house in Kirkland, when he made a built-in bench and paneled the entire basement with wood himself. It didn't age well but the basement family room didn't need to look fancy. I forgot that he'd taken some of those drawers with them when they sold the house and moved out to West Fork. Imagine a couple toddlers pulling on those knobs to get boxes of Legos and blankets out during playtime, and you'd be right back in the mid-'80s with me and my brother. Glad the wood shed is serving you well. I hope you had a lovely holiday and wish you the best for 2025.

Great story, @rivalpiper! There's another rolling box in the broom shop, probably related, I would guess. They were used for wood boxes when we came, and we just carried on the tradition. The wood shed and pump house by the creek are looking thirsty, so we will give them some love and a coat of oil this summer. It finally snowed and froze properly, so we are happy winter is here. Happy New Year!

Seems we never know what to expect from ol' Man Winter anymore. You may get bombed yet. Meanwhile, i get it about having to lift shovels of heavy wet snow over a deck rail...but that rail of yours is just way to nice to remove. I think your section openings are a fine plan. Meanwhile, enjoy those open woods...and dont eat any fly larvae omlets 🤢😄

It’s been an odd year here too. Dry and warm…pretty much since early last summer we’ve been 10-15 degrees above normal. That snow looked heavy…lots of water in it. Well, the hens better get after it instead of relying on the government. Haha

I had two by four horizontal rails on my deck and I never cared for them. I replaced the top rail with a treated 2x6 and pulled all the other rails off. I bought plastic covered steel cable from Lowe’s and used a long aluminum level to mark off five rows of holes. If you use one length of cable on each section of fence, you can tighten one level at a time until the whole thing is tight. I used a stainless steel screw to anchor each end and the finished product was pretty nice looking. I couldn’t believe how much better the view was when I didn’t have all those boards to look at. Lynette gave it a five star rating and it has been there for two years with no glitches. If you would like some close up shots of the details, just let me know.

Howdy Mo! Those poor turkeys were on the hunt for food today. It's amazing how they survive out there. I remember that belly deep snow. That was rough for a while. I shouldn't complain, but we could use a good freeze about now! Happy New Year!

  • @daveoverholt8540

Good to see you are getting some moisture but that rain and slush can get messy for sure. We replaced our log deck rail with just 3 rows of steps all the way around the deck. That way you can shovel off anywhere and you have no obstruction to the views and can walk off the deck at any place vs. going to the stairs. It was a bit of a project but it opens up the deck and is easier to stain and maintain than the log railings in my opinion. I like the close up shot of those chickens eating the special recipe and hope you get some more snow!

    • @WestForkWoodsman
      @WestForkWoodsman 8 дней назад

I've seen decks like that, and they are pretty practical, indeed. Log rails are a real bugger to stain and maintain, I can attest. I appreciate your advice, Dave. Having some good ideas is half the battle! Only 1 egg today, but no complaints about the menu from the hen house today!

Hey Kevin. I was wondering if you could somehow have a section of railing that could swing open like a gate. I imagine your current railing would be too heavy for that but maybe you could have a section made out of aluminum that you could swing out to push snow through (or enjoy the view) and close and latch when you’re done. Be a cool little project for you too. Thanks for sharing my friend and have a great weekend!

Winters sure ain’t what they used to be when I was a youngster. Karen and I went snowshoeing today with Bodh scoping out some potential shed hunting ground. It was a nice fluffy consistency but warm weather and rain are on the way so the snowshoeing will have to wait til we get more snow. Love the Swedish cope style of your logs on the Cabin. Ours are a milled tongue and groove style…. Nice and tight and it was an easy kit to put together but I like the look of yours a little better. Take care Kevin.

Merry Christmas, Dave! We have had the best luck with Bard Rock and Dominique chickens so far. We live in a harsh climate ranging from -30F up to 107 F. Tough on chickens. These Buff Orpingtons are tough, but egg production is lacking - and they eat a lot. This spring when we renew our flock, we're thinking of getting Bard Rocks, Dominique and maybe trying some Australorps. I think they would make a good mixed flock and more eggs. Well, they were razor sharp, but the people who are not used to such knifes use it under the wrong angle and slide on the convex shoulder. In axes there are different approaches to some tasks. For example chopping or in felling you say convex is not good for you. Well if used correctly convex actually pops off good chunks of chips out of the tree. Narrower blades have to have some heft and convex grind to work. That's how Swedish forest axes work. While in some other countries blade is longer and flat ground under smaller angle. They have to have small angle so yhat they can go deep enough with wider blade. They are more predictable as well. Though one would not believe hiw much work can be done with Scandinavian first axe that's is a size of a boys axe. For example my Wetterlings Firest axe can take 8 inch tree so fast that you couldn't believe considering the head size and weight. But it just simply works. It just kicks out bigger chunks. So when you want to cut, for example, under 45 degrees you actually need to hit at 50 degrees. Then it will bite in with no problems.

Very cool Kevin. There were a couple pretty nice bucks in that footage. I liked the little one antlered buck...he must have tangled with a big one. Bucks and bulls sure lose good sense when the rut is on....glad we humans aren't like that....well maybe some are. Anyway, have a very blessed Thanksgiving - we sure have a lot to be thankful for!

Okay this is pretty darn cool and what a neat little knife. Great job on bringing it back to life and I like the pull tab idea. I really like the happenings at West Fork and that's a nice buck in the background!!

Howdy Dave. Having fun with the "new" knife. That buck was my son's muzzleloader harvest a few years back. I'm enjoying the memories of that hunt until he gets his own cabin. He put a lot of miles on his boots to find that one!

You have amazing "wood vision" Kevin meaning I really enjoy how you can envision and make a great camp spot with some down trees and moving stuff around. I struggle with this and from the beginning of the video I was like "what's he going to make....this is going to be good" and sure enough another great one!! Thank You!!!

Haha! I was thinking the same thing, Dave. "What am I going to make? I hope this is good!" Just getting by, my friend. I mostly was looking for a place with a lot of firewood, so I wouldn't have to go looking. It was a nice, relaxing trip, and I'm glad you came along. I hope you are doing great. Next video will be my trail cam dump, in time for Thanksgiving. Happy Thanksgiving, my friend.
