Not gonna lie, the gopro beeping and your response made me smile, so it kind of made the shot. =) happy accidents.
Alls well that ends well 👍🏼
This video is 100% correct
Well, you helped solidify my decision to get a Hero10. I've been buying older gear for years now, and I always seem to find deals as I lag behind 2 years in tech. If it was good enough in 2022, why wouldn't it work now in '24 for most applications? New is better, but older can get the job done too.
Absolutely man. It was two models behind the “newest” when I bought it and I’ve been very happy with it
Bailing wire is the one thing that has helped me the most. From cables to exhaust pipes to loose covers to brake stays. Wire for the win.
Absolutely. It’s a lifesaver
Thanks!
Thank you so much 🙏🏼 this is the biggest thanks I’ve ever gotten on my channel and I appreciate it more than you know. If there’s ever a specific video you’re interested in seeing or some way I can help you directly please don’t hesitate to reach out 🙏🏼
why will the bike start with kick start and,not with starter
What happens when you press the start button
A really good friend of mine had a chopper he built, he started it with parts in a box, and it would sit in his living for many years as he would envision its final build, when i met him in 2014 he had already finished his chopper in the late 90's, a hardtail ridge frame, open primary 5" belt driven, springer front end, shovelhead powered by a S.U. carburetor with straight pipe exhaust, i still remember the way the exhaust was pulsing on my pant leg. Two years ago he started to get sick and one day he did an oil change on the chopper and forgot to put back a plug and took a ride, he came back with oil all over his legs and an oil trial behind him, he was so worried he damaged the engine and it sat a few months until he found a friend he knew in the past that worked on motorcycles, so began to remove the engine to be worked on, i got to help work on his 54 ford, his 49 ford which i loved that car, and i was going to help him with dismantling and rebuilding the chopper, he dismantled the chopper to take the engine himself, and he was getting worse, and when the engine came back he was needed my help, sadly i couldn't be there in the time to help him before he passed , i regret not telling customers I couldn't do work so i could help him, he never got to show me how to work on a chopper and how to put it back together, i had to learn it myself, needless to say i bought it from his wife and, i know my friend is proud and knew i could rebuild it by myself, I'm trying to locate the oil filter threaded nipple so the gasket can seal to the relocation oil filter plate, and put oil in, then i can take that ride he said i had to experience, I never been afraid to get my hand dirty and start working on something I've never done before, the only problem is i never rode, but i will and I'm going to ride the shit out of it knowing he is riding with me in spirit.
What a beautiful story, I’m sure he is very proud of what you’ve done with the bike. It sounds like something you’ll cherish forever. These are the stories that explain why we do this chopper thing. Thank you for sharing this
I just started watching your videos very very informant awesome job keep up the good work
Thank you 🙏🏼
Not being an a$$ but I broke back twice and am all screwed up from car accidents bike accidents and there is no way I’d ride anything but a rigid. Most ppl that roll their eyes at hard tails never have been on one

Thanks for your help Bro. I'm new to kicking my 93ci shovelhead and your technique is working for me. She's kicked back on me a couple of times and that's not fun. I think full hard kicks on the compression stroke is the answer. I leave the ignition off until the kicker is set-up where I want it.
That’s great man! Definitely safer to leave that key off til you’re ready. If it kicks back a lot, you can consider your timing. Too advanced can cause kickback. But if it’s only in rare cases then I wouldn’t mess up a good thing
@@greasesgarage Thanks again.
Hey grease, just tuned in for an episode of the lowlife chopper podcast and heard you weren’t there anymore, what happened?
Hey brotha, thanks for reaching out. I stepped away from the podcast a little over a year ago, right around the same time I started on RUclips. I felt like I had done all I could do for the community via the podcast platform in those 5 years I was hosting and wanted to branch into video content like this. I knew I couldn’t do both at the same time so I had to choose one. I’m happy I stepped away to do this channel because the response has been great and a lot of people have finished their builds via these videos which is what my main goal was from the start 🙏🏼
@@greasesgarage I wondered immediately. I knew something was off as soon as the intro was rolling. Still a cool show it’s just different without you

Greetings from South Africa. Really appreciate and love your chopper videos. This video for wiring is perfect but I'm still challenged with the cowpie starter and solenoid wiring with relay. Any advice on this added starter? I have a 1980 Shovel.

Not to my knowledge, evo is as new as you can go while still allowing for easy hardtailing. You could get a paughco frame for a twin cam tho
Question -- whats a good source to study the anatomy of a chopper before i go on building?
The best source would probably be instagram for starters. Find pictures of bikes you like. See if you can find a style that grabs your attention. Building is a highly creative process but in my opinion, it’s easier to reach your destination when you have a destination in mind. Search choppers via hashtags, find the inspiration photos that speak to you, then you can get specific about which parts are which. I have a free fb group by the same name as this channel where you can talk to others and I also do paid 1 on 1 coaching calls where we could go through those photos and I could break down what parts are what and exactly what you’d need to get that look for your bike.
Im glad i found your channel. Exactly what I needed to build some confidence on the topic. I'll be starting on a build this year.
Fantastic 👍🏼 let me know how it goes!
What's the rattle ?
As a guy running the same belt but on a Shovel, I can say BDL’s resources on their site are terrible. The only way I got anywhere was to call and talk to their tech guy.
Agreed, that was the whole reason I felt like I had to make this video haha
My ignition doesn’t have a G what would be the replacement for that ? Thank youuuu
How can I tell you without knowing what it DOES have lol
@@greasesgarage that’s a great point lol There’s an S,C,A,M,B Thanks for responding!
I am trying to rewire my honda steed vlx 400. As first, I like your creativity and wanna to make it. So can I need the cdi system for my cycle? Can i wire my ignition coils from the 4 output wires ( blue, light blue, yellow, light yellow). Please help me what wires can connect to the rear and front ignition coils. Thanks so much sir
Maybe the inner cable is too short and holding the slide up?
Will this work on early evo dyna frames? I have an 86.
No, unfortunately the dyna frame is totally different both front and rear
Pretty much it would be easier to just go with an open primary instead of closed.
In my opinion yes. No question. Easier to adjust your clutch, less bolts, less parts, no gaskets, no oil, no service interval, stator change takes half the time…what’s not to love?
How come sounds like shit tho? It's like something is scraping metal Is that your clutch? Dear god
Only the chopper guys will know
Great vid! Chopper Time has a great video showing all your steps for the same shovel style hardtail kit. Not many vids how to do it but yours and his will help a lot
That’s what it’s all about, hopefully this helps some people get their bikes into the frames they want
I was thinking of doin the hardtail on my softail frame. Before I made the big changes on the frame I just tig- welded some two inch strips where the swingarm sisors in the frame. After 1 month of a rigid I just cut those strips again. My back thanked me.❤
Making the swingarm rigid tends to ride and handle a little worse than a full rigid frame because the geometry is different. The swingarm is positioned where it is to allow it to flex up and down so removing that flex doesn’t always mimic the experience of a rigid frame. Same goes for the sporty when people add rigid struts. But in the end it’s your bike and if you like the suspension you should keep it
Nice one ya greasy bastard
Just put a lowering kit on your shocks it's cheaper than doctor bills and will save your back and a ridge you feel every little defect in the crappy roads that are everywhere in our country. I'm 66 been riding since I was 15 dropped my softtail 1-1/2 inches looks great rides nice because i also adjusted the shock springs . I have rods in my lower back and a plate in my neck so got to go with comfort and looks.
can you do a kickstart guide aswell, I don't seem to get what it wants me to do when its cold

Question…I’ve got an 83 FXR with 5 spd and it’s got that funky arm sticking up for the clutch cable but my 93 FLHTP 5 spd doesn’t have the arm. Same transmission different clutch or different 5 spds all together? Thanks
Glad you mentioned this, I do know that the early fxr had that strange arm on top and actually they got a bad reputation for breaking, maybe due to that extreme upward angle. So for those transmissions you might have a bit of a golden setup for foot clutch in that you could fabricate a new arm and have a rock solid foot clutch with a five speed. Only downside it’s it’s attached to an FXR so the chances that someone would WANT a foot clutch are very slim haha. But it’s totally doable
I was actually thinking the same thing as I was watching your video i know the one with the arms are less desirable but it does look like should you use one in a chopper it wouldn’t be too difficult to make a foot clutch
@josephtizol9695 what I don’t know is whether that trans would fit into say, a softail frame, being that it’s only included on the FXR which has a different frame. Not saying it doesn’t fit, just that I don’t know whether it fits or not. An interesting experiment for a future video if I could ever get my hands on one
Ohhh ok i didn’t realize they were FXR specific 👍🏻
This was a really good one I thoroughly enjoyed the story. I used to listen to every episode of those early years of LowLife my kids grew up with Loctite
Thank you for listening this whole time! Many years of the show and still now 🙏🏼 this was a different type of video than I usually make so I’m happy to hear it was enjoyable 👍🏼
Back in the days of yore, there were several companies making frames that kind-of looked rigid but had suspension, the Amen Savior being the best known but none of them looked good or worked well. People who don't like choppers always ask why you'd take a perfectly good bike and ruin it by using one of those frames, etc. Then, after they'd all come and gone H-D came out with their Softail which was far better than anything the chopper frame companies had made. The only thing wrong with it was the springs were underneath which meant they get stretched, not compresed, when you hit a bump in the road but even so, they were the best solution to the problem of not wanting a swingarm and shocks because you think they're ugly but wanting your kidneys to keep on functioning. A few years ago, H-D moved the shocks to the top like Vincent did back in the '50s so they compress rather than stretch. Much better. I love choppers but I must ask why a person would want to take a frame that H-D went to a lot of trouble to make look like a ridid but still have some suspension, and make it rigid. Is a Softail really that ugly that you'd cut it off and replace it with a hard tail?
If you want that true chopper look there’s no replacement for the rigid frame. Less material, smaller tubing, no shocks in the way or tight spaces to try to get a wrench into. It’s just clean and simple and it weighs about 1/3 of the weight of the swing arm. When I removed it I couldn’t believe how heavy it was! Much of those pieces are solid not tubes. The weights were wild.
@@greasesgarage There's no doubt in the world that a rigid looks great but I just baulk at the idea of having no suspension. Call me a sissy if you like but If I had a Softail (which I don't) and I wanted to remove some weight, I'd make something similar but out of tubing with the shock(s) on top. In any case, for someone wanting to do what you did, great video as always and I look forward to the next one even if it doesn't apply to me.
@davidrayner9832 I appreciate that 🙏🏼 I’ll never tell somebody that their bike isn’t cool just because it’s not a rigid, lots of cool swingarm bikes out there for sure 🤘🏼 one day I might be in the same situation and unable to ride this one
You know Grease, if you were running 3" open belt primary and the belt failed far from home, a 1 1/2 in belt of the same size and tooth count will work just fine on your 3 inch pulleys.
This is true, it definitely would
@@greasesgarage I just now realized that a spare 1 1/2 belt could be easily carried in a loadout bag on long trips.
I no longer change tires period, however a good can of tire fix-it works good.
krispychoppers changed the game they have an EVO Kit now
Yes there’s a plug for that kit in the video
yeh pretty excited about that!
