- In this part 2 video, we'll be covering the one topic request I got from so many of you after I made part 1...how to wire an electric starter. In this video I'll give you three different options for how to wire in your starter including...
-Manual Push Button on the Solend
-Momentary Key Switch Start
-Push Button with Relay
Plus I'll give you a bonus tip on how you can combine these options together to create a backup in the event that one starter option should fail. No more getting stuck out on the road!

Dude! Thanks for making this, you saved my project!
I appreciate the comment man, stoked to hear that it was helpful!
Nice simple explanation.
Excellent videos.
Thanks Peter!
Very good video. I hope that ol Davey gets royalties off of this. In a year, he'll have enough money to buy a pack of smokes!
Good video, explained simple👍💯😎
Thank you!
Great video
Thank you Jo 🙏🏼
I appreciate the video but I had to look around to confirm something.
If your Harley starter has the little wire AND the larger gauge wire, then you DON’T need to run a relay. The little wire leads to a solenoid in the starter that acts as a relay. Adding a relay in between that is redundant. The larger gauge wire handles the cranking load and the smaller wire only actuates the solenoid. That’s why so many people run without a relay and don’t have issues.
You DO however, need a relay if your starter does not have a built in solenoid.
Still a great video and guide, but i hope this clears confusion.
Port “G” on the keyed switch stands for ganged as in gang fuse box
Ah thank you for clearing that up! Surprised I didn’t think of that given I was calling the fuse block by that same name haha
I was reading comments knowing one of you guys had the answer. Thanks
How do I hard wire my stator and rectifier? I'm done with the rest of the bike but I'm stuck now plz help...thanks
@JeremyBrown-tw2mv see my part 1 wiring video it shows those parts
I’m running a starter solenoid on my Yamaha XS650, does that replace the relay in your diagram? Great video, it’s definitely a must watch for home builders.
I will have to check on that
In the process of wiring my Shovelhead 1977 using a key switch . Dual Fire - Electric/Kick - Headlight/Tailight - Rear Brake . The solenoid has 3 bolts . Long one goes to battery. Which wires connect to the short and the small bolts. Thanks
What if you have center post for starter with three post ign -battery -accessory go back to three circuit breakers to protect wires
Arkwelding leed works also . I used that on my 80 shovelHead . I have never figured out , Why Do harley use lite wire on starter Switch ? I run from the on switch to a starter button and then a Kill Button but between the tanks I open the stach Box and flip the power switch and another hidden starter Button.
How you wire up coil if dont have points its 1995 sportster can u still use this wiring
Hey Grease I like the segment on how to wire a chopper my question to you is what gauge wire do you need to wire each circuit
16 gauge for everything but the battery ground, for that I use 12 gauge
I would of like to have seen the wire gauge for each connection of the electric start momentary switch configuration.
16 gauge can work for all of those besides the battery to starter wire
How about a clutch adjustment vid? From spring tension to how many plates to run, what steels to use, etc
Last weeks video was a clutch adjustment video haha
Question, I wired my push start button without a key switch. I use a single pole toggle switch instead of a key. Might it cause me to not get a spark?
That alone wouldn’t be the reason for not getting spark. There is another break in the chain somewhere
Were does that red wire under the starter run to it shows on the mechanical pushbutton section
The mechanical push button doesn’t require any wires
If you forget to hook the the starter wire back up after wiring up your bike will it cause it not to have any spark 95 sportster I forgot to plug it back in and have no spark it has a prism mechanical start button
Did you hook it back up?
@@greasesgarage no just noticed when I ran of time working on it
I thought the purpose of the starter solenoid was to isolate the low amperage from the high amperage required to spin the starter? The starter solenoid does not pull full cca from the battery when engaged. It’s still smart to use a relay, which adds further protection, but as stated, most choppers don’t use them anyway.
I wired this just like the video now hsve no spark to plug have lights come on checked everything do you still have to have bank angle sensor hooked up need help
I do not use a bank angle sensor or a kickstand sensor so you’ll want to start by checking those to ensure they’re not acting as kill switches
Is the second option go with the wiring from the first video you did
So the second option is the same setup as mine but mine doesn’t have a starter. A lot of people saw that first video I did and asked me to make one for people who want electric start so this video shows you how to add it
Where is the 4 gauge wire in this diagram? Does it run straight to the battery and a second (16 gauge) wire to the relay & key switch? Also what is the best way to form the “y”? Thanks
4 gauge wire runs from the battery negative terminal to frame ground and also from the battery positive to the starter motor.
To form the Y the best way is to solder the joint. Strip all wires back 1/4-1/2”, twist them tight individually. Then I twist the two together first before twisting the bottom of the Y onto those two. Once they’re twisted tight, add some solder and some shrink wrap
Thanks! We love and benefit from your videos!
Hey how would you do it on a shovel head ?
Same way I’ve got it here but you’ll run it to your starter and solenoid
So if I'm wiring with the relay, do I still need a circuit breaker?
I don’t believe so
One the key switch/relay configuration where does the 4g wire from the positive battery terminal configure into the drawing? Part 1 shows it direct from the positive terminal. 16 g wire from positive terminal to B terminal on switch and to 30 on relay. 16g from starter to 87. 16g from S terminal on switch to 86. No mention of 4g wire in Part 2
Run the wires exactly as you saw them in part 1. From the battery positive to the fuse block, and out to the various circuits. When it’s time to add the starter circuit, the relay and switch will go on each end of an additional wire that Y’s out from the battery positive terminal. Your starter motor will also go direct to the battery positive terminal. It will be 3 wires going to it
I think I got it now. The only wire that is 4g is the wire from the battery positive to starter. All the relay wiring is 16g@@greasesgarage
@@johnstalnaker8807 that’s correct 👍🏼
Thank you. Big help with my project. Keep those videos coming. 😊
The only part which is not fully correct is that the full number of CCA is not going via the relay, this goes through the 4 gauge. The relay is just for the low amp switch wire to the starter
CAN I RUN ANY OF THESE ON A '75 IRONHEAD SPORTSTER!?
Yes
Do you have to run this thru a key switch or can u fix it to run thru a toggle switch to start and kill the motor along with the push button switch
You can run it through a toggle no problem
How do you hook it up thru a toggle switch not to smart lol
@bennygregory2629 place the toggle switch in exactly the same spot as I placed my key switch
Ty love watching your videos so informative
What if you have electric compression release
Unfortunately I’m not familiar with that, I would have to do some research myself. Not many choppers with that feature
I do not understand, my starter has two + terminals, one carries the starter load the other is the trigger solenoid, which terminal are you going to, if it's the load side it would supply power but not throw the benix out, if it's the trigger it would close the starter circuit but no power to starter.
What bike are you working with?
I dig your content man. I gave your channel a shout out on my channel, i hope you dont mind
I appreciate that brotha! I’ll have to check out your Shovelhead motor vids I’m about to be building one myself and it’s outside my scope of knowledge so I’ll need all the help I can get haha
Yeah man. I'll help anyway I can
I need a 500cca battery with left hand positive. Does ! anyone! Know where? Oh and absolutely no lithium battery or anti gravity. Agm or the led acid battery. Now mind you that chopper is limited to motorcycle battery only no car ECT. And yes it absolutely takes 500 cca or more .
