  • In this video I'll be answering one of the most common questions I'm asked on this channel. Should you build your chopper from a complete bike, or just buy the parts separately.

    I have a 1978 shriner/bobber that has been through many transformations throughout the years, going through another one now, I've always wanted to go the hardtail route but I had a very serious motorcycle wreck back in 1991 and my back won't handle it.
    But I still watch your videos because there's still pertinent information on them.
    I have Billet Chrome triple trees with a built-in 5° rake, 41 mm tubes, and lowers from an 81 flt, 10" apes, and I use the stock fenders cut down and lowered to my liking.
    I'm getting ready to install an 80 cubic inch engine from an 1981 flt that runs excellent (my original 74 cubic inch will be completely rebuilt, top and bottom, and kept as a reserve)
    I'm also installing a Joe Hunt Magneto, I'm removing it from the 74-inch.
    I also like my original fat tanks too.
    I'm too lazy to keep finding gas stations to fill up. Hahaha
    I've also got a 1991 springer softtail and a 1992 electra glide ultra classic.

      Sounds like it’s going to be a very cool bike when it’s all done. Having a spare motor is amazing, what a great backup to have on deck. Let me know how it goes with the magneto, I will most likely cave one day and spend the money for one.

    Thank so much, Grease. You've definitely empowered me to do something that I always thought was out of reach. That said, there's another advantage to starting with a complete bike (at least for the first-time builder), and that is certainty that all the parts you bought as a unit will definitely work together. This route eliminates all worries about chain alignment and other such frustrations. If you rode it home, it also eliminates any fears about whether it'll start once you finish reassembly. I can't wait to get started. Thanks for getting me off the couch!

    When I start mine, it'll be a full bike. Would love to find another TC 88 EFI like my current bike just for compatibility.

      For sure. Having two of the same model would make for a way easier time setting up tool rolls and having proper specialty tools in your shop etc.
      I’d love to do the same

    A complete bike is easier , You car modify oem parts no problems. Some states NY aftermarket engine, trans ,frame you need to carry papers with you .For them . pre 1970 just for the engine ID # , Have a plan ! Gather parts for later (ebay) get them for the right price !! Great video !!!

    Enjoyed the video. One thing you didn't touch on. Life, it tends to get in the way of bike building. Something that should take a couple weeks , well we have all seen the projects get sold. A running bike, will give you riding time, the chance to meet others. Possibly willing to help or have parts to offer. Get a running bike, then build as you want, or collect parts. You're in the life, not looking out the window, so to speak. Time goes by fast. Good video.

    I've always started with a doner bike, so much cheaper plus a title and in California that is key.

    Question -- whats a good source to study the anatomy of a chopper before i go on building?

      The best source would probably be instagram for starters. Find pictures of bikes you like. See if you can find a style that grabs your attention. Building is a highly creative process but in my opinion, it’s easier to reach your destination when you have a destination in mind.
      Search choppers via hashtags, find the inspiration photos that speak to you, then you can get specific about which parts are which.
      I have a free fb group by the same name as this channel where you can talk to others and I also do paid 1 on 1 coaching calls where we could go through those photos and I could break down what parts are what and exactly what you’d need to get that look for your bike.

      I've never used that ignition unfortunately so I don't think I could help with that but Dynatek customer service probably could
