Ha! I just stumbled across this and didn't know you were doing a podcast now. Good shit. Life long North Stars/Stars fan. I always loved the "goons". Avery and Ott were 2 of my favorites. I never got to meet Avery but met Ott a few times and he was a good dude. Hilarious even. Avery might disagree I dunno. I just read Boy On Ice by John Branch - an excellent, detailed recounting of Boogard's story. Not sure this criticism of Tortorella is fair. First off, Derek showed up in training camp slow, overweight and out of shape. Clearly Torts wasn't a big supporter of Boogaard, but he was always in the lineup. Once he got injured with the concussion, he spent most of the rest of the season recovering in his apartment in Manhattan, until he went to rehab in LA in the spring. At any time, any player on the Rangers could have taken the initiative to get in touch with him or walk over to his apartment and see him. Tortorella didn't stand in the way of that. Nobody did. What was Tortorella to do? He's the coach of the New York Rangers - not a drug counselor or social worker.
