On this channel I delve into all aspects of the World of Greyhawk, the fantasy campaign created by Gary Gygax, co-inventor of Dungeons & Dragons. You'll find in-depth analyses of modules, books, and boxed sets, overviews synthesizing information across a broad spectrum of sources, and original content adding to the rich legacy of Oerth.

Greyhawk Campaign Guide Now Available
Off topic but will you still be creating content for 1st edition?
Absolutely! One more ADD book at least, and a BUNCH of adventures in the hopper.
@ Great. Thanks so much.
Love that you are supporting your customers with the print & pdf bundle to allow for an upgrade. Bravo!
Thanks! I did the same thing with my Adventures Dark and Deep and Castle of the Mad Archmage books. I figure it's just as much as if folks had bought the pdf and print together in the first place. Why punish them for checking out the digital book first?
I have used all three of your DM‘s guild books in my new Greyhawk campaign, and my players have really gone all in with the lore! Really digging into their human racial backgrounds, languages, gods, etc.! For example, the mage from Gradsul in Keoland is in the school of Drawmij, and secretly intent on discovering arcane secrets of his hidden Suloise heritage!
Great looking books! We are finally getting great Greyhawk content! Nice.
These are exceptionally looking. I'm really impressed with how far the technology has some in such a short time. Kudos on the art and presentation as well. Would love to see a flip-through or two of some of your books.
Just picked up the Players Guide...excellent!
Thanks!
Any Greyhawk adventure modules coming?
I've got something in mind, but haven't really begun any work on it. Some other things are in the pipeline before such a thing.
Will you have any for sale at GaryCon?
Definitely the Player's Guide (I have those already, and will be selling them at PAGE this weekend). Hopefully the Cleric's Guide, depending on how quickly Lightning Source can produce the books.
Super excited to get my copies!
DUDE! I just received the Adventures Dark and Deep books. You're going to break my bank account, LOL. (but I WILL be ordering!)
Perfect timing on this, I am getting ready to run a campaign in Ratik! Wilderness surrounding and closing in on a pocket of civilization was really what drew me into the area and fits my campaign idea well.
Hi there, Took advantage of the print update. Also, as far as Advanced Dark and Deep have received the Bestiary today. Looks good, might have a dig through my pdfs of old Dragon articles to see if there is anything additional for shaman/witch doctors. Also, have some pdfs of the old AD&D1e phb/dmg noted some funky classes like Eldritch Knight and the Warden. One of the key things that put me off the 1e and wait for 2e was the psionic rules were a mess - not sure if Gygax was field testing them. So I completely understand why only psychic strike is present in the bestiary.
At some point I might revisit psionics and redo them completely (although that might wait for my post-apocalyptic sci-fi game that's been lurking in the back of my mind for a while). I did feel I needed to include the Psychic Strike in order to keep the relative powers of the monsters that have psionic attacks, since that's the only thing that affects non-psionic creatures. Without that, many of the monsters would lose a very powerful attack form.
@@GreyhawkGrognard Completely understand, the psychic strike is a lot more streamlined variable of the five psionic attacks and defences from both 1e and 2e. Am looking at both the 1e and 1e versions of the psionic. Looking how beat to implement. Either going with when rolling those who test positive the majority are wild talents, with the top 3%-5% being full blown psions. Or, use the psionicist from the complete psionic book, tweaked for 1e.
Joe, do you ever sleep? I think you made a deal with a time elemental to get these done.
I do my 9-5 job because I have to, but I do my 6-10 job because I love to.
Those look great Joe! Thanks for producing them!
Another "take my money video"
Are they system neutral?
no -- 5e -- as per DMGuild Rules -- BUT -- I still play AD&D and it's easily converted .. and well worth it- I having bought the PDF's on the first day .. Also -- GET his ADD Core and Bestiary -- they're OMG great -- F'ing TOMBS --
@TheSoling27 thank you for the information.
Everything fan produced on DMsGuild has to be 5E. But as @TheSoling27 said, there's a lot of non-rule lore stuff, and the rule-specific stuff is pretty easy to convert to 1E if desired.
I GOTTA get these!
You can find the books here (affiliate links): Cleric's Guide - tinyurl.com/5yd9k2yu Player's Guide - tinyurl.com/pvzfb8bv
The only problem is my characters would make sure good wins! Gygax had a problem with good, we don't. The circle of 8 has been destroyed in our campaign by the Holy Fists of Light.
I'm actually fairly new to Greyhawk. Last year I wound up running a couple sessions of Ghosts of Saltmarsh for a 5e group when they kicked out their DM for being a creep. Running that led to me reading more about the setting and then I came to love the setting. Wrote my own personal wiki in Obsidian so I had a spoiler-free resource to share with my players and could keep my own personal additions in check. Now that WotC is reintroducing the setting, I'm pretty upset. As you say, it creates a chasm between playgroups between different versions of Greyhawk, and the modern one *will* be the most popular of the two. I'm really just baffled why they didn't advance the timeline as has been the case previously with reintroducing settings. In particular, I think of Saltmarsh in the 3e PHB which was used as an example for setting up a town/city; and that was set post-Greyhawk wars. All this could've been avoided if they'd just advanced the timeline and written in the space that provided.
This is cool
Hey bud love your stuff I had Adventures Dark and Deep at the printer ATM alongside several other items. You should push it more even just mentions in each video if not showing it off more it's something that is brilliant and more need to know about , I always mention it when people talk wanting more "Older D&D" thanks again for your content super happy of backed it
I just went looking for a copy of Saga of Old City on ebay. I certainly see what you meant by, "Not Cheap." They don't ever put stuff like this up on Drivethru RPG do they?
Still watching these. Don't give up on them! The meat and potatoes of Greyhawk, OG world building and lore!
Oh count on it.
If Greyhawk is going to be used at our table, it'll be used as an alternate reality to Forgotten Realms that players can travel to with great difficulty. Greyhawk hasnt been a part of D&D for so long, none of my players were even born the last time it was used. All my players know is Forgotten Realms.
You might be on the wrong channel. As long as I breathe, Greyhawk lives.
@GreyhawkGrognard maybe for your table. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind learning about this new old world, it's just that my players are millennials and younger. Virtually everything they know about D&D, movies, video games, TV shows, social media, all takes place in Forgotten Realms. It's all they've ever known. Buuuuuut..... if they ever gain an interest in Greyhawk, as a forever DM, it doesn't hurt to know a bit about it 😉
I cast Rary’s Algorithmic Enhancement!
Interesting premise, but... why would the Overking care about the Pale? It's a long way away, doesn't affect him, he has far more issues with his crumbling kingdom, and isn't the Pale already dealing with the Bandit Kingdoms and Iuz?
The US messes around with countries all the time that they shouldn’t.
I love anything involving cemeteries, graveyards or crypts! I like battling skeletons or zombies :)
Absolutely BRILLIANT!!!!!! I love how you tie the politics of Greyhawk together! These aren’t stand alone countries! They are entities that engage with one another! This is the stuff of books and movies!!!
I love that tee-shirt. And excellent hook.
Very interesting adventure hook idea. Hmmm 🤔.
Good job as always. Was talking to Gary's son on a Facebook DnD thread the other day (a brush with royalty how awesome) and we discussed how exciting the new publications ex Troll Lord Games and how your channel is so important to the institutional memory of the setting. Cuddos.
Was there ever a whole pristine castle or just the ruins with dungeon levels?
At some point, undoubtedly. But we've never seen it.
I modeled my world after Greyhawk and even took some of Greyhawk''s coin names for the names of coins in players' home country where silver coins are called nobles and copper called commons. But gold coins are called royals instead of orbs. Instead of having square platinum plates, I use 8 sided mithril plates worth 5 gold each. Platinum is worthless in my world (called bastard silver) just like it used to be in real life. I adopted a silver system where 1 silver noble in my world has the buying power of 1 Greyhawk gold orb. Treasure is adjusted too so instead of finding 100 gold, they'll find 100 silver OR perhaps 5 pieces of gold. Finding gold should mean something! I modeled my maps after Judge's Guild's Wilderlands maps.
That sounds a bit similar to the forgotten temple of Tharizdun.
Excellent, thanks for this
In the Greyhawk campaign that I have run for my sister I had WG7 as a sort of demiplane created by Zagyg attached to the real Castle. I think she thought it too silly though and we haven't played for a while.
Loved the Castle Greyhawk overview! WG7 was an abomination and absolutely aimed as an egregious insult towards Gary. It came out the year I turned twenty, and though the cover art set me back and was not at all what I expected I snapped it up when I first saw it. The first "adventure" in it was . . . odd, but while a simpleton's concept it wasn't . . . awful. Everything got worse from there. The most irritating thing to me was the crossover where, as the party watches, a handsome human, an austere elf, and a skeleton enter a room with a corpse in it, the skeleton kneels by the corpse then looks up at the human and says "He's dead, Jim." That was pretty much where I refused to read more as the stupidity had ticked me off. And ticked me off so much that thirty six plus years later I still basically remember the 'Star Trek' scene and dialogue. Just ugh. Over the dozen years between my starting in the hobby and that module coming out I had done all I could to learn what I could about Castle Greyhawk (and Blackmoor as well) and its environs and episodes. We got piecemeal references in some modules, more info through related articles in Dragon Magazine, and some from other sources including a conference call with the man himself when I was in middle school. The first big homebrew adventure I got to try to explore was a megadungeon at a summer camp the year I turned 11, and I became fascinated with the idea. Thankfully, my mechanical engineer father was happy to get me notepads of graph paper from his job and occasionally buy me some of the larger sheets as well, probably the 17x22 inch sheets as I remember that they came folded to standard notebook paper size but unfolded to four times that. I still have some of my early maps and some of my room keys for them (done in a much more limited style, like the descriptions in the larger scale products from Judges Guild [who I adored] like City State of the Invincible Overlord and, my favorite JG product, Tegel Manor). I still occasionally work on some of my newer megadungeons, but I tend to try to plan and prepare smaller scale adventures over multi-session ones. I do have Greyhawk Ruins and liked it well enough, though it felt a pale reflection of the original at best. Still astronomically better than WG7. I've never seen Return to Greyhawk Ruins, but based on your thoughts I may try to pick up a copy. Thanks for that! I do have a copy of your Mad Archmage work that I hope to sit down and give a dedicated readthrough to once I've gotten caught up on all the work I've got to finish first. Sigh. If only it'd quit piling up faster than I can finish it. 😕
Jon over at YeOldeGeek has been running adventure modules he dislikes for one reason or another for a few months. He did "Expedition to the Barrier Peaks" because he does not care for sci-fi, "The Forest Oracle" which he considers the worst published module ever, and now will be choosing between the WG7 Greyhawk or Red Sonja for the next one. Hopefully I will be able to get in on them for at least a little bit of the fun. I bought WG7 long ago, not realizing it was what it was. I got it used from an online gaming store, not for a huge price but definitely more than than it was worth. I was furious when I read through it. I kept it, just for completion sake in my collection, but what a piece of junk.
Awesome plot hook, more geared to 1e but that is all I play.
Interesting.
We love these! These need to be compiled into print.
I'm a Gen X'er who started out in 1e on Greyhawk, but honestly I am not so set in my ways and a diehard "we must stick to canon" on a fantasy world that was never very well developed in the first place that I feel I have to die on that hill. I'll explain it this way, my DM has been playing since the late 80's, and one time at Gen Con he stood up in front of Ed Greenwood and told him point blank in front of the whole room, "The first time I read the books from the Forgotten Realms boxed set, I put my Greyhawk boxed set away and never looked at it again", and that elicited huge cheers from the crowd. Let's be honest, Greyhawk is pretty vanilla and boring compared to just about every other campaign setting so if WotC needs to make changes that break canon, yeah I just don't care because it was never very good or imaginative to start with.
What shirt are you wearing? Looks like Tiamat?
It's a D&D Cartoon shirt. 🙂
It’s funny to see how petty small minded people can be (reference to all the attacks on Gary way back to that funhouse module).
Excited about the return to Castle Zagyg...I hope Steve C makes a good run of it. I was so excited when I discovered the Upper Works and then crushed to find out that it wasn't going to be finished.
One of my favorite subjects! Had to watch as soon as I saw it pop up.
Good to see the channel content returning to form. 😎
Returning?
Synchronicity, I was just looking at the Greyhawk Ruins module last night, and looking forward to Castle of the Mad Archmage getting here thru the mail soon. Thanks Joe!
