Nice reviews, Joe! I love the new intro and I really appreciate your reviews of the fan-created Greyhawk content. I'm loving the Greyhawk Expanded series -I'm glad to see your review of the Northlands here! I think the author strikes the right tone in the players' guide, unifying the original Greyhawk Folio (and certain unpublished ideas such as Gary Gygax's idea of their being an ancient culture like China in the far west of Oerik) and the changes found in the 2024 Greyhawk (things like tieflings and dragon born are not part of the Flanaess and require some thought as to their origins before introducing them into the core campaign world) - The author also clearly acknowledges that this is his own take of the Greyhawk campaign world, explains the reasons why he made the choices he did, leaning heavily into his understanding of history and anthropology to inform his vision of Greyhawk, and then encourages us to make it our own. I really appreciate that perspective! Thanks for sharing the Legacy of the Unknown, definitely going to add that one to my collection, as it sounds like a wonderful seed for a new campaign. I have the original copy of B1 as well -- the one that was in the Holmes D&D Basic set, where there was also a reference to the player encouraging them to pursue the AD&D game rules after the first 3 levels of Holmes Basic. As to your question about why they took out the reference to Greyhawk, my opinion is that it was very much a marketing move by TSR. I believe it corresponded with the revision of the Holmes D&D Basic set to the Moldvay Basic set -- which not only changed some things in basic itself (e.g., dwarves, elves, and halflings as distinct "classes" that advanced according to their own unique class tables), but also directed players to the Expert rules set for levels 4-14. The Expert rules introduced the "Known World", and as a result, I think TSR decided to retcon the location of the the B-series modules to places in the Known World to fit with the new B/X branding. I actually like placing B1 in Oerth rather than the Known World as it thematically fits a whole lot better than later modules in the B and X series. Thanks for continuing to champion all things Greyhawk, I'm happy to support both your channel and the products that you've put out!
I've said it before, but it's really spiffy of you to shine some light on these indie creations. And these sound pretty neat too. Kudos, Your Groglyness.
Thanks for the great update Joe. I’m wondering if you’ve ever done a video or would consider doing a video on manufacturing and production in Grayhawk? Mining, sawmills, food production, how does it work? What kingdoms are exporters what kingdoms are importers how does the trade work between the kingdoms among resources, Manufactured goods and food? Also, a little bit curious about technology, do any major cities in Grayhawk use magic to light their streets at night, is burning Whale oil for lights, common? Thanks for any insight you can offer.
