The Peak District Viking
Великобритания
Добавлен 6 апр 2013
This channel is about all things Peak District, the history, scenery, wildlife and all shared through hiking in the area. I am a 55 year old slightly overweight biker and engineer who lives in the Dark Peak. I am keen on solo hiking, camping, motorcycles and anything to do with the outdoors. Primarily based in the Peak District National Park but also further afield.
In this channel I intend to upload videos of the walks I do, hiking documentaries and a link to the GPX download of the route.
I will also rant, ramble and philosophise about life in general. So I apologise in advance for any F bombs ( not really I am what I am).I also hope to focus on the history, natural history, flora and fauna as these seem to be lacking in a lot of the hiking videos today, which seem to focus on how far and how fast the walk is done plus endless gear reviews.
That's it for now I hope to start uploading videos very soon ( it will be a very big learner curve so be patient).

First Wild Camp in 35 Years!!! | A night on Horsehill Tor in the Peak District
Mt first wild camp in 35 years!!! A night in the Nortent Vern 1 on Horsehill Tor in the Peak District. I started from my front door in Castleton and headed out the village along Longcliffe and then up to the bottom of Mam Tor past Treakcliffe Cavern and the Blue John Mine. Then up onto Rushup Edge and Lords Seat before descending to Chapel Gate and then climbing up towards Brown Knoll, cutting over to Horsehill Tor at the last minute.
A nice 5.5 mile with 2130ft of ascent and a 17Kg pack, a bit of a baptism of fire.
Got a cracking sunrise the next day before heading back home in time for work at 9am.
GPX file downloads of all my routes are in my facebook group for downloading so please join ...

Really a beautiful place
Thanks 😃
You have a new sub today, and this is a cracking tutorial for Outdoor active, full of information. You have now made my use of the Pro (not Pro+) version, which I look forward to using with a little more confidence. Castleton is a place I've ventured to a few time when I lived in Chesterfield, now North Devon. Thank you.
Glad you found it useful. It's a great app and I use it all the time. Thanks for subscribing. Any questions about outdoor active let me know.
I trust you have a pew with your name on it, Stu, and tithe at least 50% of your wage. 😇🫣🤥😉 I do love the peal in all seriousness.
The pews in there go back to the 1600s with family names on them
I love to hear church bells. Always wanted to live next to a church. Can't abide by these people who complain about them.
Totally agree mate. My Mrs works in the George and you get residents asking if they can be silenced 🤣🤣🤣 don't stay here if you can't stand it 🤣🤣🤣
@@thepeakdistrictviking Sell them bloody ear plugs!!😄
In my village in Spain the bells never peel! They just go CLANG CLANG CLANG!! Horrible
Can't beat the peal of English bells
Really great, as always thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching 😁
Lovely. I'm heading up there next week. Thinking of that spot myself for a bivi. Would you say you're unlikely to get moved on?
Very unlikely as off the path and not visible from below. I didn't see a soul
A walk I've been wanting to do for a while and I've been wondering why that path was 'closed'!
Glad it was helpful, hope you enjoyed it.
WOW - what a sight to wake up to ! Worth the wild camping discomfort I reckon.
Definitely was! Thanks for watching 😁
Quite beautiful
It was stunning
Thanks, very interesting
Cheers 🍻
Very cool
Cheers 🍻
Even on a night such as that Castleton still looks like a great place to live.
You can't beat a good storm. It looks great in all weather's!
Good vid pal
Cheers mate, thanks for watchjng
Bored me to death that pal
Oh well, you can always find another video
I did, I found your gibbot hill video very good 👍
No worries tbh the Outdoor active was a bit tedious when I look back it 🤣🤣🤣🤣 it was early days lol. Cheers for the feedback though
Enjoyed that buddy, thanks for taking us along I never sleep well first night camping, by the forth night I’m sleeping as well as I do at home 😴
It was that plus being under manchester airport flight path 🤣🤣🤣🤣 cheers for watching
Awesome share
Cheers 🍻 thanks for watching
Some great photos there at sunrise mate and a great video 👍
Cheers dude, thanks for watching. It made up for the lack of a sunset 🤣🤣
Wonderful vid mate, really enjoyed that. We love the Bog Cotton this time if year too.. swathes of it over the moors, just beautiful! Well, 35 years hey? I hope you enjoyed it enough to recatch the camping bug. Lovely shots at sunrise too. All the best for the next adventures buddy. 👌⛺💚
Thanks mate, the bug is definitely back!!!! The big cotton seems out in force this year that's for sure!! Can't wait till the next camp.
Excellent video mate! Great to see you out wild camping, it's a totally different ball game, climbing those hills with a heavy pack on isn't it! You got some stunning photos of the sunrise with the clag flowing over the hills, very impressive. I'm just wondering if your mic has a stereo/mono setting on it as the sound was coming out of the left speaker only? I have a pair of Hollyland Lark 1 wireless mics (same as yours I think?) and if you are just using one it needs to be set to mono for the sound to come out of both speakers 👍
Cheers I'll check that out on the mic. I'd not noticed it on my laptop or TV but will double check the settings. Thinking about it it did look a bit odd when editing the audio. Mine is the mark 2 but very similar. Cheers for the advice. I'll certainly be getting fitter that's for sure 🤣🤣🤣
What a nice viking wildcamp. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching 😊
NICE ONE, BRO ,-)
Thanks bro, hope all is well with you
@@thepeakdistrictviking yeah, bro. Just getting back into doing some walking with the aim of doing some wild camping before the end of the year.
Good luck with it bro. If you're ever up this way give us a shout
Love this video stunning scenery mate it's big upset with a bloody rubbish its bloody disgusting mate there are plenty off rubbish bins there no excuse but yeah great videos always mate 👍
Thanks mate, it was a stunning walk on the way back. Totally agree no excuse for rubbish, it boils my blood!!!
@@thepeakdistrictviking same here iv been going to the peak District for years and I love it there mate but unfortunately some idiots have no respect for such a beautiful area 😞😠
Fantastic wildcamp Stu. Those early morning clouds were amazing over Kinder. Stunning sunrise, too. That Edale Skyline Hike is a cracking hike. I did it last year, and it wiped me out. I think I didn't take enough food/water. I just plodded on and need to force myself to stop at intervals. What was the rehydrated meal like? I've not bought any and am interested in your review. It is great to get away from the Mam Tor crowd, too. It is amazing how quiet it is going up to Brown Knoll. Not many seem to go that way, but the views up there are amazing. I can't get my head around people dumping stuff and expecting others to clear up for them. Great video Stu, thanks for sharing.
Thanks Chris. It was amazing and won't be the last that's for sure. The dehydrated meals are OK but bloody expensive, I'm sure I can find cheaper in the supermarket if I'm creative!!! Well done on the edale skyline. I might break it into two and camp over halfway 🤣🤣
Cracking video Stuart that sunrise looks amazing as did the morning cloud inversion. Looked like a great camp spot. I also need to cut my pack weight as on a normal hike it's around 10,-12 kg as I carry a lot of fluids then on a camp it's like around 20+ kgs which along with my 21st carcass it's a challenge and half on inclines 😊
Thanks for watching. I think the pack itself might be part of my issue as it's a bit of a beast. There's not much else I can cut down tbh. Jaut have to get stronger and fitter 🤣🤣🤣
@@thepeakdistrictviking yeah it'll deffo make you stronger and fitter I think mine just becomes normal but if someone else held it they struggle lol I'm like a bloody Pak yak
@@JIMcLauchlan 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Wow! An amazing camp with absolutely stunning views and NO other human interventions! 😜 always a bonus. At one with the world the way it should be! Always look forward to your next adventures. Thanks for sharing. ❤️xx
Glad you enjoyed it, it's a good way to de-stress that's for sure!
Ah it’s bog cotton, thanks. I was up wild camping most of last week in the Peak District and was wondering what all those white flowers were. Some looked like white birds bobbing around. Nice video
Thanks for watching. Bog cotton looks amazing and seems to be very prevalent this year too.
You are so very fortunate to live in a small Derbyshire village AND to be the type to get out and really know your hills & dales. So many people live in beautiful country villages but don’t walk anywhere these days. For me, apart from the stunning scenery, I love your Derbyshire accent and wait for that moment in each video when you have a rant .. and swear a lot for a brief moment lmfho! Love it!!
Thanks for watching. Totally agree with you on people not appreciating what's around them, partly why I do the films as a lot of people are oblivious to it all. As for the accent and ranting, that comes with the territory 🤣🤣🤣
1999 was the last time I did this. Hill overlooking Dovedale. It was glorious.
That sounds a great spot! Thanks for watching as always
Thorpe Cloud … I want my ashes to be scattered up there! Although they will probably end up resting under a sideboard in someone’s house like those of my parents and my last two dogs!! Yikes!!
@@kaymorrice8141 That's somewhere I'd love to be laid to rest as well!
@@thatguyfromcetialphaV I live in Spain now. Need someone to pick up my ashes and transport me there!

Hi 🏕️🏕️🏕️ It's great that you're back to camping in style after so many years Take care 🏕️🧉🏕️🧉🏕️🧉🏕️
Thanks, it was great to be back out. Cheers for watching
Hi Stu. Brilliant mate. What a stunning evening and morning you had. You certainly had better views then I did on my camp on Friday night, saw bugger all in the morning apart from the inside of a cloud. Haha Still great to be out in the tent again though. All the best mate Dave 😀🥾⛰🏕️
Cheers mate, thanks for watching. It's always good to be out in the tent, no such thing as bad weather!
That was a great watch Stu, I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish.👍 There was some great scenery/views in this video, so much so, that I now want to do a camp up there myself. That Edale skyline trip sounds good, if you want any company on it (or any camp), then let me know mate. Also, thanks for the shoutout. A brilliant video, nice and relaxing to view. Cheers Stu.🙂
Thanks mate really appreciate that. Would be good to meet up and camp. I'll get in touch at some point. Things are a bit hectic for next month or so though.
Well done mate, glad you enjoyed it. It's a beautiful world up there isn't it? Great vid, thank you.
Cheers for watching mate, it's great up there, I'll be back out again soon!
@@thepeakdistrictviking Its looking a bit wet for this week, but Ill be up again too!
Great to see you out camping after 35 years...i also have recently gotten back into it..i never sleep well on wild camps but worth it for the experience..if you fancy meeting up for a camp someday, give us a shout.
Cheers, definitely sounds a plan. Be good to meet up!!!
What a fantastic way to spend an evening!!
It was great, defiantly going to do more of it for sure!
Interesting! Thanks for the continuing information.
Glad you found it interesting, thanks for watching
Wow … I’ve just read all that very small but fascinating script to accompany your video! Totally fascinating thank you for sharing this! Gone watching again lol
Glad you found it interesting. There's so much history around when you look into it.
Really interesting that! So much so I watched it thrice! I used to live in Derbyshire. I can’t recall the details if everywhere my husband (gone now) used to take me & the dogs. Might it have been Deep Dale … as you climb up out of there there’s a spot where a gibbet used to be. People where hung and left to die fir others to see! Maybe they were left in a similar cage??
It would have been an identical cage. There are a few sites normally by roadside or routes so people would see them as a sort of warning
@@thepeakdistrictviking that’s right the one I saw was on a sort of hill by the side of a road overlooking deep Dale and I think there was a pub up top too! 35 yesrs ago so can’t quite remember
Top video mate and an enjoyable watch.👍
Thanks mate, really appreciate it coming from someone as knowledgeable as yourself. Cheers for watching!!! My first wild camp film will be out tonight!!
@@thepeakdistrictviking I'll look forward to watching it mate. Tanks for the heads-up.👍
Very interesting👍
Glad you found it interesting cheers for watching
One I’d like to visit always thought it was easy to get to👍
It is from the road but if you go along Harland Edge it's a nightmare 🤣🤣
The last time I was up on Beeley Moor I had my Land Rover 111 long wheel base , it was deep snow , great!!!
Sounds like fun!!!
