Art is so therapeutic to me; I share tips, tools, and techniques that have helped me on my journey, so your journey will be less rocky.❤️
I have been teaching since 1984 and have taught art since 2003. I have a passion to teach and help others find the creative joy that has enriched my life.
My students have said that since I was a teacher before I was an artist that I can explain the "how to" process so they can understand it.
I first started this channel as a way for my students to see what they missed when they couldn't attend a class. The older videos are unedited on a variety of topics: drawing and painting instruction (in oils, pastel, watercolor, pencil or charcoal). I will be learning to edit so the viewing will be more enjoyable.
Thank you for joining me on my journey of sharing the joy of creating with others.

40 TIPS - Sketching Italy
I spent over a year planning and preparing for this trip. This video shares 40 tips that I used while sketching in Italy that you might want to consider incorporating in a future trip for yourself. This will be the first video of several regarding this trip and I hope you join me as I paint entries to finish my Italian sketchbook.
You don't have to go to Italy to get ideas on how to make sketching/journaling an enjoyable experience. You can do this in your hometown! I used mostly watercolor and gouache on this trip and traveled with carry-on only.
My art supplies weighed less than five pounds and I even took a stool and umbrella. I will list the materials in a future video, but this one is...

When I started watercolor journaling, or Urban sketching as some people call it, I started with pencil, then paint, and finally pen. Recently, I found out that if I can skip the pencil and go straight to the pen that actually saves me time. It also allows me to come back later and add the watercolor if my time is cut short. I also want to encourage you to do the same image multiple times, but v...

I struggle with the water brush but I noticed you sometimes hold it like a pen. GREAT IDEA! Also I'd love it if you would do a detailed tutorial showing how you use it. I'M AMAZED!

Awesome, Kari!
@@Lyndell44 thank you so much, Lyn!
This is one of the MOST helpful videos of travel journaling that I have ever seen! I would love to see your "likes" and "didn't like" lists! I recently celebrated our wedding anniversary in the Lake District and it was so lovely. I, too, kept track of things I wish I had packed and what I didn't use. Even though it was in the 40s at night, I needed a portable fan to just keep the air moving and the Lord provided it!! A dear American family we ran into gifted me on of theirs! Also, I brought a silicone scrubby that fits on my hands since Europe doesn't use washcloths! I wish I had a good, packable rain jacket. My puffer was semi-water resistant but it was also a little too warm at time. I packed too many art supplies. I wish I would have made a list of my days like you did, because I really can't remember one day from another. My waterproof, lightweight hiking boots from Danner were a win as well as my wool pants! A little packable shopping bag was really handy. My new baggallini sling was great. Wool shirts were perfect. I still am not happy with my set up for walking and hiking with art supplies and purse items. I would love to see your sitting stool! Thanks so much for sharing this video! I will be coming back to it!
Thank you so much for your informative comment. We went to the Lake District on our 10th Anniversary! I'll do a video on my lists. I'm so thankful you found this video helpful. My focus when traveling is collecting memories instead of creating a masterpiece. It takes the pressure off. Feel free to ask questions...that's how I get ideas. Happy creating! Thanks so much for the compliment. ❤❤❤
I also had four merino wool tops, two shells, 2 short sleeves. I LOVE them ❤
I’ve painted those falls before!! I’d love to paint there with you again some day!!❤
Very nice.... thanks for sharing your life....
Thank you for supporting me by watching! I hope what you see will encourage you in your art journey! Happy creating ♥️
Love it! So many beautiful images that you captured! My favourite is probably the red flowers (geraniums?) around a window.
Thanks for watching and commenting. I just rewatched the video and realized I missed a page that also has red geraniums. I'll post that one later, but glad this one spoke to you. There was SO MUCH to look at, it was a challenge to zone in on a similar subject. Have a super day! ♥️
So pure works , keep going, I loved them ❤ especially buildings, shadows and green color levels 🌲
@@nanamiss1793 thank you so much! I feel so blessed to have been able to go on this trip. I planned and saved for it for over a year and was so hopeful that my anticipation wouldn't be blown out of proportion to what I would experience. Looks like a great time. Did you paint your watercolors with a water brush on the trip?
Sure did! I used traditional brushes for the gouache.
Wow!!!!! Amazing trip and art 🥰
Thank you!!! It was beyond words!
Thank you! Cheers!
You made the drawing / sketch looks so simple and easy, but I doubt if I can do the same ... waiting for my watercolor and aqua brush to arrive and cant wait to try.
@azianabdaziz968 talk positively to yourself. You might not get it right the first time ... Remember to add "Yet" to your statement. You might not be able to do it YET, but drawing is a LEARNED skill. There are many ways to draw, you will find a way that works for you if you want to. So tell yourself, I'm going to learn something about drawing today. That can be said daily, even for me. I may learn what doesn't work and have to make a shift somewhere, or I may draw something that works, so I repeat it to make it more comfortable doing it again. Hope this makes sense. I hope I can help you on your art journey; happy creating!
Love your video.... inspirational and gives me the confidence to try it out for the 1st time.
@@azianabdaziz9968 Your comment makes my heart sing! Please give it a try, and be kind to yourself as you learn. Remember, you didn't learn to write your letters on the first or second try! Happy creating!
I love gouache and have used Windsor and Newton and other expensive brands but found Arteza brand works as well too!
I also have used them primarily as a flat style, but I love the idea of thicker paints since I have used acrylics for years, gouache is a new experience and I enjoy it!❤
I agree, Arteza is a great student grade paint that will not break the bank. The only thing I don't like is they don't sell individual colors.
Enjoy🎉
With your mini pallets, did you paint the inside cover ...I'm trying to make some mini pallets like yours. What watercolors do you use in your mini pallets?
@@ralphherrick596 No, the inside cover was decorated cut paper glued in. The colors are listed in another video, I'll try to find it. I just got home yesterday and am still trying to catch up on things.
I did a similar thing for my last 2 holidays and I love it! Giving yourself “permission” to glue in photos takes away some of the pressure of feeling you need to draw everything that catches your eye! I also like to draw maps, especially if I’ve been for a long walk. The combination of writing, sketching, maps and photos is so good for remembering your holiday! Hope you are having/have had a great time. Can’t wait to see the end result!
@@madebylora I am now in the Rome airport waiting for my return flight. I am THRILLED with the process I chose and have memories for a lifetime! The maps are a good idea, thank you! I had an amazing time.

What a thoughtful gift! Looking forward to seeing how you fill those tiny sketchbooks and work your limited pallet!😃
I love those tiny books! Looking forward to seeing them filled up! I’ve always loved tiny things. I do bookbinding and make my own small sketchbooks for my “emergency sketch kit”. Although I guess my current one is pretty large - it’s 3 inches square! Many years ago I made a pair of tiny books (I think about the same size as your smallest one) and I wrote some Shakespeare in them! One was Hamlet and the other was Romeo and Juliet (just a few quotes, not the whole thing haha) and then I turned them into a pair of earrings! Crazy!
