  • This video shows several layering techniques I use when painting with gouache. This is one of my favorite paintings in my journal and my students asked me to show them how I painted it, so I did. Most of the paint was Winsor Newton, but the Cyan blue was Turner Designer Gouache. The journal I am painting this in is a Strathmore watercolor journal with cold-pressed paper.
    Hope you enjoy it.

Wowza! Just in time as I’m preparing for a door art exhibit! Lots of greats tips! Especially where you used the flat side of a brush to create texture! Thanks!

@@kstutz230 I would LOVE to have you come there! It's a week of creating, with clean mountain air, all meals provided with no dishes to wash, no laundry to do, and everyone who is there is a creative person in one way or another. So it's easy to strike up conversations about each other's passion. I hope you will consider it. Your hubby could come to and take a different class.

I can totally understand your frustrations. I hated gouache when I started painting with it. There are many variables that affect the results. The amount of water in the brush is a HUGE one! The type of surface you are painting on and whether it is dry or wet allows layering or it reactivates the paint. The question to ask myself would be, why would I want to paint with gouache? These are my answers:
      1. I use gouache when I am traveling, and not for studio paintings.
      2. I can get a similar result to oils without the hassle of a wet canvas, so it simplified Plein air painting.
      3. I consider my Plein Air work when traveling more of a study than a work to be framed. Gouache requires less to take than oils.
      4. Most of my journals are completed with watercolor. Gouache compliments watercolor and can be mixed with it for different effects and also paint over mistakes.
      5. It also photographs beautifully because of the matte finish.
      6. You can layer light over dark that you can't in watercolor.
Hope this helps. It's definitely not for everyone, but it is a good option for me.
Sounds like I just outlined a future video😃

Are you painting on paper or canvas?

I'm painting in a journal of cold-pressed watercolor paper. Sorry I didn't mention that in the video. I'll add that to my description. Thanks for watching!
