As a gouache beginner, the dramatic and variable value changes that occur when gouache dries earns it a special place in painting hell.
I get that! I don't even think about it, I'm used to it. The more you paint, the easier it will be! But I add it to my list of things I have to cover in an upcoming video, thanks!
@@CecileYadro the 9 for you allot all is of all OOO of
😂It does its own thing for sure. Always a surprise.
@@Cre-Art i believe it's mostly due to the inconsistency of pigments used. some reds when mixed with some blues simply make brown, others make beautiful purple. it depends on the properties of the pigments or dyes, but gouache with dyes is a whole different story.
@@BigCroca Yes, there is that aspect for sure. It keeps me on my toes. 😆But I love it.
I am an experienced oil painter, but now I want to try gouache. I need to learn this new technique. You are so helpful and informative.
Glad it was helpful!
LOL I did the absolutely worst thing I could do bought the himi set!! So.. now that I have revealed my blunder, I won't let a bad purchase discourage me. Thank you for sharing this information
it’s good to know you were not discouraged by Himi!
Your enthusiasm is very communicative, ça donne envie !
Merci beaucoup !!!
I got the Himi set as a gift. I call it cartoon paint. If I want to recreate something from an anime or video game it’s pretty spot on.
For anything else I use a historic style gouache from Davinci. Though I have expanded my colors.
Cartoon paint? what a good name!!!!
Ahhh, you're so much fun to watch! I also love gouache, so just watched this video to feel validated.
Yay, thank you!
Cecile.... could you do a video on blending with Gouache mainly skin tones
It's in my to-do list!
I loved this video! Because it's make me to use more and more this medium! Thanks a lot! ❤❤❤
I'm so glad!
this video was actually so helpful! im getting ready to do my first big painting and ive been looking for a good paint! Merci!

I LOVE Gouache 🎨🎨🎨
same!
I started painting in 2022 with acrylic. Didn't find it enjoyable. Never really liked the look of it, and really didn't like worrying about the disposal process. I just stopped painting. Then I tried watercolors which are lovely, but wanted the opacity of gouache (which is the only thing I liked about acrylics). So I switched and have been extremely happy with the change. My pick is Holbein's Primary Kit, which you show in this video. It's the second brand I tried and it's just a dream to use. So I agree with all of your points: gouache is the best-and good gouache should never be underrated. :)
happy painting!
@@CecileYadro Thank you. :)
I am with you. Are you still on that 5-color tiny set? I prefer painting to color mixing from 3 primaries, so I am starting with a 32-color set where I am cherry-picking my favorite colors, and that is a hefty cost to start.
@@nemethmik Sometimes the amount of colors (who can resist) can be overwhelming. It's a good learning experience to keep a limited palette and see what you can make of it. But do what you want, and have fun.
You seem to be telling my story :)
Hello Cecile! I fell in love with gouache due to its finish and flexibility. That said, the color shifting after drying is frustrating to deal with. More recently I have been mixing gouache with watercolors, with mostly good results.
Yes, I hear you! Color shifting might be the most tricky with gouache, but you get used to it, I don't even think about it really! And mixing gouache and watercolor is fun!
Love your video. I’m going to try gouache today. Thank you
Have fun!
Thank you!!!❤😊 love it!
You're welcome 😊
I am a watercolourist just starting out with gouache. I am sick of paying for the expensive cotton paper needed for watercolour. You have me very excited to try.
I totally agree! gouache doesn’t need expensive paper!
I like gouache but i need to watch someone like you.Iam so proud i found your website ❤

Iam a beginner with gouache and an iam so proud of hearing you.❤
Thank you so much 😀
I got myself the 18-colors Himi set and I love it for realistic stuff (I'm beginner, I started with opaque paint for the first time, before I tried only $5 for 24 colors acrylic and didnt even finish half of a sketch). I like to look at the colors, it inspires me to mix more and play with it more.
It's great if you like Himi, I don't really!
I am new to gouache and I LOVE IT!!! I subscribed after the first video of yours I watched (this is the second and about to go watch more lol - new huge fan here!) I never tried the home gouache, I started with a few tubes of winsor & newton, Holbein and all of the Sui gouache because I just LOVE those colors!!! 😍 but now that I know I love it I’ll get a few larger primary color tubes since I only had smaller ones.
Thanks for watching! And yes, primary are the one you need the most, but white even more!!! get the largest one you can get in white!
@@CecileYadro that’s the most gouache I have is white lol! I also have a beige that makes some lovely warm pastels! I’m joining your art school thing this week!!!

I do book illustrations mostly black-&-white either with a dipping pen or an Indian ink brush. When I do add colour I've been using acrylic. Most of my pictures are very sketchy in style so they just need tiny dabs of colour.
The difference is that with acrylics I do need dozens of tubes in different colours. Because acrylic dries so fast and cannot be reactivated with water you can waste a lot of paint if you mix your own.
I would like to try gouache. I love the idea of just using blue, pink, yellow and white!
PS one major difference with acrylic, you don't mix colours wet on the paper, you just wait 10 minutes and paint a thin layer of another colour over the top and you get your mix that way. So to get a very intense green for grass you can add streaks of yellow and turquoise and it makes your green really "pop"!✍️
You can layer with gouache too, although it's a bit more tricky than with acrylic. Another good thing for you is that gouache is matte and easy to photography/scan without any glare on it.
@@CecileYadro it's funny people talk about acrylic's quick drying time as some sort of disadvantage, presumably that's because they like to smear one wet colour into another or work in a wet-on-wet kind of style. That's all a mystery to me. In my limited adventures with paint I have never yet thought, "Oh I wish this paint wouldn't dry so fast. I wish it were still wet!"
As I say, that's all a mystery to me but one day, when I feel more accomplished with acrylics, I intend to invest in the little box of professional grade gouache and solve that mystery.
PS I did have a couple of pots of "acrylic gouache" from Liquitex. It's basically a very liquid acrylic that dries matt so it does look just like gouache!
Yes, it looks like gouache, but it's not!!! it's a marketing trick, it's just matte acrylic.
Thank you for the Himi warning!! I viewed your Holbein video and from that decided to purchase some Holbein tubes to try. I'm just beginning and am enjoying gouache so far. Thanks again!
wowowowow! so cool to read this!

You asked about any down sides to gouache..it has taken me a long time to get used to the fast drying time... maybe I paint slowly but I hate how quickly it dries. I have purchased the WM watercolor blending medium and that has helped alot. Thanks for your great videos!

You know what's a little unfortunate? I was introduced to gouache in primary school but was never taught the techniques. I think gouache was considered a "kid" medium since its easy to paint with, easy to rewet, easy to clean...etc... and kids just messed around with it. I drifted to watercolor later in life but came back to gouache recently and fell in love with it because it is watercolor but more! There is something quite therapeutic about painting with gouache that i gotta admit watercolor can be frustrating. I think it's the level of control I can exert on the paint. Watercolor can a bit chaotic if i am not in control.
I get that, gouache is so underrated!
I've always wanted to paint. I didn't like acrylic at all, always dried up paint to throw away. And I didn't know techniques like layering or blending. I'm not good at drawing, so that wasn't an option. I knew that I had to practice shadows and highlights and shapes somehow, so that after a lot of ugly attempts I might end up with something respectable. Also, I never knew what to paint.
Some time ago a friend of my mother gave me a box with almost dried up paints. I had no idea what those colors were so I figured if it's not acrylic it must be oil. At some point I wanted to paint a picture for my grandparents on their wedding day. So I have these weird 12 colors called "Schminke". (In German this means "face paint"...)
I was so frustrated. The colors looked different wet than dry. I had to dilute them with so much water my drawing paper ended up being just a muddy mess. After the first layer, I couldn't see my pencil drawing anymore.
Then I googled what those stupid colors were that I had there...
Now I have 120 tubes of Arteza gouache and watercolor paper.
I still can't paint or draw, but the consistency is getting better and better.
The stuff is a miracle medium. For me, gouache is a dream that I could never have imagined.
Now I'm just struggling with self-doubt and inexperience.
I need days for a simple picture because I'm trying to get the colors for highlight and shadow somehow. Since I haven't learned that at all yet, I just go back and forth with a different color in the hope that it will fit randomly.... The constand waiting until the layer is dry is an exercise in patience... Most of the time it ends up in the mud.
I have really bad problems with the thicker consistency. Everything is fine up to "milky", but then I start blending everything and in the end I have a picture with a thick layer of grey-brown.
As long as I don't know which color belongs in which position, I see black for my art career XD
Thanks for your comment! Regarding drawing you can still trace and you’ll solve the issue. I have a video about this if you haven’t watched it yet. And regarding colors I’m sure you can find pretty good tutorials around here. It’s worth it to learn color theory once for all and move from this. Happy painting!
"Now I have 120 tubes of Arteza gouache and watercolor paper." whoah, that sounds brutal, you must be a real fan of gouache.
@@nemethmik I love this stuff
I loveeee gouache 😂❤️❤️❤️❤️
Same!!!!
😊 tks for comment it fantastic I like it very much gouache is the best medium 😊
My pleasure 😊
I am a beginner with Gouache. I started a series on my channel where I am trying to learn gouache by painting ghibli foods.🍙🍛 I even a painted with gouache on a canvas for a friend, the coverage was a bit hard for me due to the textured surface. 😣😣 I was also a bit worried about getting it wet and ruining the parts I have painted already! Cecile, if you can help me with that!! Finally I varnished it with spray.
But i have to admit I love the texture and vibrancy of gouache. Also came to know older paintings in my country was done in gouache!
That's the thing with gouache is that you can rewet it! As I said in the video it's both a curse and a blessing. You could try acryla gouache if you don't want to rewet accidentally your painting.
@@CecileYadro thanks Cecile. Haven’t heard of acrylic gouache!!! I will check it out!
Great video, and love your directness. I have one question, what is your thoughts of mixing watercolour paints with professional white gouache, to have the best of both worlds?
Good question! it’s in my to-do list of videos, so stay tuned!
Hello Cecil, I usually draw with pencils, pastel pencils and sometimes with Pan Pastels (they are fantastic!) and I usually paint with oil paints or with acrylics, but I'm curious, so I bought some gouache colors of Caran D'Ache and some gouache colors of Winsor and Newton, but I still tried them. Your enthusiasm is contagious, but I 'm worried about archival methods to preserve the paintings with gouache, because I think that they are very delicate. Thanks 😊, Silvia
It depends what you do with your gouache. If it's in a sketchbook it's fine. If you want to hang it, you can frame it under a glass, or varnish it: ruclips.net/video/jTrlx6h4ePk/видео.html
@@CecileYadro thanks you 😊
As a person that lovesss gouache and uses 12 tubes of gouache. I WAS TEMPTED by the himi gouache cause of the amount of colors it has! So glad I found this video before I bought that expensive 54 colors hahaha. Thank you ma'am
You're welcome!
Since I watched your video , je dois acheter de nouveaux tubes de gouaches et reprendre, thank you ❤❤
Good!!! Happy painting!
i love gouache myself. it is stress free since you don't have to worry about your palette drying too fast (permanently and thus wasting paint) and it reactivates rather easily. however, if you had an alternative would you choose poster paints as the closest to it? poster paints are more abundant in some places and even cheaper.
yes, poster is pretty similar, if it's easier and cheaper in your country, you can go for it! This is what Studio Ghibli uses in their background paintings;
Nice to hear that you think it's fine on canvas. I thought your example on canvas looked really nice. It was quite opaque, would you keep it to opaque when using canvas? Or does it work with more water in it on canvas too?
it works with diluted or opaque gouache the same! Maybe it's even easier with more watery paint.
Você é tão fofa 💕
Muito obrigado
Definitely Your enthusiasm is contagious, and I fell in love with gouache, too, but I can see immediately its severe limitations: (1) very small community, it is even smaller than oil pastels (2) cheap gouache is not expensive, but high quality guache is brutally expensive (3) the typical size of gouache paintings are small A5 or 20 x 20 cm. If I want to paint something A3, gouache is not the medium to go (4) When you add even a tiny bit more water than needed, gouache paint becomes imediatly a regular watercolor losing its opacity, opacity control requires a hell lot of practice (5) Some colors are opaque some colors are semi-opaque, even the opaque ones are not as opaque as oil or acrilic (6) When you want to apply classic layering painting process, the fact that the underlying gouache layer is resolved back is a pain. You cannot really fixate a base layer (7) If you prefer painting transparent style, watercolor is far more convenient and a lot cheaper with a huge community, workshops. (8) It has a dull matte finish, just like any watercolor, which is fine in sketchbooks; fortunately, it can be varnished to get a more appealing (semi-glossy) look. Still, with all these limitations, I love gouache, it is absolutely challenging, hell expensive, but it is fun even watching videos like Yours.
I love your message! Beceause I agree with almost all you say (I like the matte finish, I even use matte varnish on my oil paintings!), and after giving all the problems with gouache, at the end you still love lit!!! Like I do!
@@CecileYadro Exactly! Gouache is addictive, small community but enthusiastic.
I bought the arteza 24 set, it's a tad chalky but does list the pigments inside, but I've not done much with them yet. I intend to use the primaries as a starting point. Do you think they are decent enough? I'm going to buy the Holbein 5 set so I can compare the two.
Yes, they’re good to begin with!
Have you tried Caran D’Ache pan gouache ? Would you recommend it?
I haven't tried this specific brand, but I wouldn't recommend gouache in pans, you can learn more here: cecileyadro.com/can-you-use-gouache-in-pans/
What sketchbook do you use for your gouache portrait paintings?
It's a handmade sketchbook by Will J Bailey, you can find it here: www.willjbaileyshop.com/product/handmade-sketchbook-with-fabriano-artistico-watercolour-paper-28x19cm
I have bought some vintage JM Paillard omnigouache tubes in an art store. Still, I don't understand if they are real gouache or tempera or opaque watercolor... What I don't like is that there is a big confusion about gouche. 🎨
I love watercolor but, you got a good point, the paper need to be thick and is not very cheap.
I wrote an article about that: cecileyadro.com/tempera-gouache-and-poster-paint/
@@CecileYadro Thank you, very informative. 🎨
Thank you and great video! im more into digital and watercolor artwork but really wanna try gouache! now i know for sure himi isn't an option, but what about other student brands like Arteza or Obertone? some other ytbers say they're ok to start but few are as specialized with gouache as yourself! so is that or go straight to Holbein or Windsor and Newton? also what about Acrylic Gouache? is more difficult? there's any difference from those and actual acrylic? and about pallets, someone should start with a wet pallet or one of those small sealed pallets?
Some answers for you:
- Arteza is the best student quality you can get, downside you can't buy individual tubes, but it's fine to begin with.
- Acrylic gouache is not gouache: ruclips.net/video/wtKWFW53IK0/видео.html
- Palette: ruclips.net/video/aYzkfJEfhWg/видео.html
Hope this helps!
@@CecileYadro got it! Thank you so much for your answer and point me to your other videos! Can't wait to see the next ones! ♥️
I bought Arteza Holbein and WN (on sale) , did one painting with Arteza , love the results but it took a lot of paint. Doing same painting with the other 2 brands. Very exciting!
Have you ever added a non- drying medium (for watercolor) for gouache?
Yes, I’m currently testing this and will make a video about it.
@@CecileYadro Tres Bien! (it's been 54 years since I took French) You are a wonderful teacher, thank you for sharing.. ❤
Acrylic is my preferred medium. But gouache is my second choice but the options are much less when it comes to brands and quality. and it’s pretty expensive
I'm not sure gouache is so expensive, it's so highly pigmented that you don't need much paint.
I agree I've just purchased a starter color set of high quality guache from a big name maker, and I can confirm: gouache is for the rich, acrylic is for the poor. One 14 ml tubelet of gouache is $7 - 10 EUR. For that price you can buy a kilo decent quality acrylic paint 🤣
I agree. Though himi is good and cheap but the smell is really really pungent for me and guves me headache. So i switched to Windsor and newton..best decision ever
Yes!
I had another artist warn me (shame me?) that gouache was fugitive. That it didn't last. That it was not archival. (I responded, "Well, how long do you need it to last?" I don't think he appreciated it).
It's true, and false! It depends on the colors actually. I have a blog article about it: cecileyadro.com/gouache-and-lightfastness/
M. Graham and daVinci are the two brands that i know of with the highest lightfastness for their pigments. in M. Graham’s case, they use the same pigments that are used in their watercolors, just less finely ground so they are more opaque.
in the 70’s and 80’s gouache was used primarly in graphic design and illustration, and as the work was generally meant to be photographed and then disposed of, rather than hung in a gallery, there wasn’t much concern for lightfastness and archivability.
these days, anything marketed as “designer’s gouache” contains more opacifiers, chalk, and whitening agents - they’re going for opacity and that unique matte finish.
if you’re concerned about lightfastness, most manufacturers list their pigments and their archival ratings on their websites.
i’m personally a big fan of M. Graham’s gouache. they are a bit more transparent than say, Winsor & Newton (or Holbein) but you can easily build on the opacity by layering them.
(sorry to hear that you had to deal with an unkind comment!)
To help protect Gouache from fading will Dorlands Wax be enough to protect UT from UV light fading damage? This is what I'm using to avoid glass.
very good dear friend
Thanks!
Mdm I need yr help Daler Roweney designer gouache paint is it consider as acrylic paint? Tks I confuse
If it is acrylic paint it's written on it. So it's traditional gouache.
Thank you. You are an art teacher? I start art class in September.
Yes, I am an online art teacher.
I started learning how to use Gouache. Luckily I didn't buy Himi. I was tempted but wasn't sure how to store it.
I store mine in the fridge!
It has been a bit difficult for me to find good quality Goache on my country, I can't buy online at the moment, and there is only 3 brands where I can choose from, Talents, Lukas nerchau and Louvre, have you try them? wich one would you recommend? Great videos btw!
The only one I know is Talens, they have one in tube and one in jars. Both are good quality.
@@CecileYadro oh thank you so much for taking the time and answer my question, they sell them in jars in here for the Talens brand ( I'm from El salvador), I will choose that one, I love your videos and I hope you keep making more they are very inspiring.
Thank you! As I am a beginner artist, of course I got the Himi set and I have been very frustrated. I think everything I paint with it looks awful. I'm going to get this Holbein set , the palette, and maybe a couple of new brushes.
Happy painting! I'm sure you'll love it!
Gouache is great in many ways, but there is one thing that makes me paint with water-soluble oil paints. Well, the dark colours have no depth. I can deepen them by using varnish, but it causes the lights to darken considerably and this rules out the use of varnish.
Yes, it's a downside of gouache. But I don't find that varnish is lightening the light colors?
How about Turner Acrylic Gouache?! That does not change color value after drying, Its also more cheap than traditional gouache and it doesn't crackle on the paper when dry, its flexible yet still velvet like with no acrylic shine! It Has the matte and opaque benefits of traditional gouache, it might even show less brush stroke textures, becomes one with the paper since it can also be diluted with water, offers great lightfastness and another pro, is that it does not reactivate with water after drying preventing potential muddiness and so it allows layering very well.. That all being said I can only imagine that traditional Gouache is being outpaced in these regards or what am I missing here?.. Though if you like mixed media and adding color pencils onto your paint, maybe the FLASHE matte 'Vinyl' paints might work the best for that purpose and is even more cheap, but loses a bit of color range the Turner Acrylic Gouache can offer - both are premium products.. This took days of headache finding some common sense in all available art mediums, but these two cents could guide who is interested into some new unexplored directions, what do you think?!..
Well, I really don't like acrylic gouache because you can't rewet it! What is an advantage for you is not for me. I like to be able to blend after, to rewet and get new colors...
@@CecileYadro I agree for everyone is there own style for sure.. And I do like watercolors where I see most use for (transparent) base layers, defining shapes, lights and shadow areas.. But to finish into details, mixed media offers allot where more layers are required.. So I do see value to stop the rewet at some point, to come in with more opaque colors, like acrylic gouache or vinyl could offer.. Also colored pencil and fine line inks are common used in mixed media hyper and semi realistic drawing/paintings ect.. I am just adding some food for thought that although traditional mediums are good and have some benefits, they also have downsides.. The pursuit of getting rid of those downsides is just common sense for who shows interested in all kind of mediums, to settle somewhere eventually.. Like I mentioned earlier there are also benefits in something like acrylic gouache or Vinyl.. Not only in compatibility with other mediums and or less crack and flexible outcomes, but also in workflow and less color change ect.. More mixing on the palette than on the paper to have better control, instead of being at the mercy of rewetting that makes painting a bit more unpredictable - some cannot afford to take such risks that could come at a cost.. Then Acrylic binders or Vinyl potentially increases work speed and accuracy, but of course also tailors to specific opaque art styles.. So I do still keep standing my ground, that not only the traditional Gouache is the 'best' medium for painting like this video suggests ('that is published to everyone, in this public space where opinions should be able to differentiate and provide informational value all together') Traditional Gouache is also more expensive and not really made to cover larger area`s ect.. So there are enough downsides, which are already solved with other mentioned mediums, while no medium all together I have found is just perfect.. Is the reason why I am looking into all mixed media capable products and workflows.. Anyway Just my two cents here, no thanks.. Cheers!
I don't like your videos......I LOVE them!!! Merci beaucoup!
Thank you! 😃 Merci !
I find it difficult to blend always.... not smooth like oils
Blending requires a thick paint, if you don't have enough paint on the paper you can't blend properly. Try with a thicker layer of paint and it should work!
@@CecileYadro thank you

I am used to watercolor and I feel the gouache is running hard! I mean you use a lot of it. Another down side I find that your cleaning water gets dirty (white) so quick. And it isn’t transparent.. can be positive side too.. but I live the transparacy and flow of watery
Well, you'd better keep watercolor if you like transparency and watery flow 😉
You're not quite sure about toxicity of paint, it depends on the pigment used, see the pigment database which covers which are toxic.
You’re right, but compared to acrylics gouache is non toxic.
What is he I gouache
