I've had struggles with gouache because I keep treating it like watercolors. Thank you for pointing out exactly how to fix that issue, it makes a lot more sense :)
Nice to see the paint behavior in action! Sometimes a representational painting isn't the best way to show the full, bright color so we appreciated the parallel lines. Very nice!
Once again you have explained in simple & easy examples of how to get the right results for painting with gouache. Thanks for sharing this informational video with us. ❤💕
I am a beginner with gouache and very much enjoy your videos. I did my first painting this weekend and had so much fun. Thank for your helpful information.
Just found you today and subscribed. I am definitely guilty of using too much water. Looking forward to watching your tutorials and painting along. Thank you.
What I would have loved to see here it is also a guide on how to mix colours to get the right one when it dries, as they dry lighter or darker depending on how dark or light they are, and I never get the right colour, and for some reason, if you add white, the colours get a lot more darker than if you dont, which is odd because white is supposed to lighten colours not to darken them by 50%
@@CecileYadro I use horadam gouache since they are the only good gouache where I live (and for some reason they are cheaper than in France) and I dont know if it is only because of the brand or if this happens with all white gouaches.. did you encounter this with your horadam gouache? thanks x
First of all, your glasses are so cute! Also I'm guilty of doing every mistake you mentioned 😅 I only make these mistakes because usually I have very limited time to paint with gouache, but I'm planning on doing a bigger painting than usuall and will take as much time as I need and will definitely refer to your video beforehand to make sure not to make these mistakes 😊🌺
Trying to get used to brush strokes again. But your videos inspire me to keep practicng. I got a journal for gouache and am painting a Rousseau on the cover. Because it is basic shapes and brightly colored it is very enjoyable. I can only sit for about 45 minutes at a time due to back surgery, so letting it dry is not an issue. I have a stay wet palette. I'm using WN for first and will paint a second inside with Holbein to see which I like better. Question for you - do you ever use an angle brush for highlight loaded with main color and side loaded with white? The master I am "copying" uses black which I think is too stark so replacing with darkest green. I loved your yellow flower field with the path (it was never an X to me) it had real depth, and I loved your last bit of painting the hills in the lighter color.
Thank you for your message. I don’t use brushes loaded with two colors; im not fond of that. and I don’t like angled brushes either. I barely use black. you’re right by using dark colors instead.
Hi may I ask why when I paint with gouache it leaves spots like the paint is dry? I don't know how to explain it 😅. Did I not add enough water or something else?
I think that is my problem too. I painted on an art board and some areas of the paint surface look dry and other areas look shiny. It’s as if the paint is shiny where I worked more on those ares so more paint there
I really like your videos, thank you! 😊 My first problem is that gouache dries very quickly on the palette. Secondly, some colors become too thick when mixed and clog the brush.😢
You hinted at a tip to reduce / avoid wasting “material” - I assumed that meant paint which is the issue I was most interested in. Hopefully you will consider this for a future video? Please and thanks
Oh Heck Yeah! Awesome video! Thanks for links, love the pic: ) QUESTIONS: Are mediums, such as Flotrol or GAC helpful in blending? Also, can you use varnish once finished to add glossy finish?
I use white or black gouache sometimes in my pastel and color pencil work to get a vibrant white or black underlayer area or a highlight top layer, but my problem is it does not dry flat. (#3, consistency) Sometimes I can work on top of it and sometimes I can not. Not certain what I am doing wrong, I am using good quality Daniel Smith but it will sometimes bulge and mess me up. I know an artist who uses black all the time for dark spots on animals and he works right over it but I can't seem to get the consistency right
Just a thought - would suggest using black pan pastel as an undercoat. Gouache could fill in the tooth. And you still need to mix the gouache on a palette for a creamy consistency but use it sparingly. Make sure your gouache is artists grade, you might have one with more fillers that clump?
Dear Cecile, I putted my Gouache into a Stay Wet Palette. Some of the paints got mouldy. I' ve baught Clove Oil to spritz them with water and a few drops of the oil. What do you do to avoid mustyness? Best wishes from Germany Bavaria at the moment in Scotland.❤

Hey there! I have buy some gouache and tried it! I love how gouache work on my paper but i am still struggling with the issue to keep the gouch still in the same texture and not get all harden and turn into some aquarelle ahah! Do i need to put it in a cold place in the fridge like the oil painting? Thanks you for your video and sorry for my messy english :D
My problem with gouache is that I can’t get enough contrast in value. I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong but my art comes out dull, not bright. I want contrast like the tree trunk in your painting with lots of different shades of brown, beige. How can I achieve that look and what am I doing wrong?
@ for example, when I put on highlights (like white) on top of darker colors the white becomes dull and darker so I can’t see the white bec the white became darker and duller. Im wonderingly if maybe Im using too much water on the top layer and not enough on the bottom layers?
@@CecileYadro I tried your suggestion and used less water and I definitely see a lot of improvement on my painting. Thank you SO much. I was using too much water and it was making it very dull and thin. I’ll keep practicing to improve my art using your tip!!!

Thank you so much for your videos and for sharing your gouache knowledge. God Bless
Thanks for watching!
For me it's the visible strokes of the brush when the paint dries on the sheet. Not sure why it keeps happening.
It depends on the thickness of the paint. Too thick and you'll see brushstrokes, too thin and it won't be opaque.
Thank you for this video this was extremely helpful!

I don't add any medium to gouache, it doesn't need it. Regarding varnishing, I have a video here: ruclips.net/video/Eae3vIJB3T0/видео.html
