This video is crammed with useful information. Your explanation about how more diluted paint will seep into the paper, and therefore be less likely to reactivate, was a real a-ha moment for me.
I did all the exercises and as I kept progressing to the third exercise, I came around to mixing the perfect consistency each time and it came out velvety and smooth. Thank you for the exercises it really helps :) and as a beginner myself, I totally recommend doing the exercises before going in to start a project. Thank you once again!
Oh my god, you have no idea how happy your comment made me! Thank you Sparsha, I am so glad you enjoyed the video and it was helpful to you, and I am so grateful you watched and commented. I hope your gouache journey is going well!
@@myriamtillson 4/7/2021 USA Grandpa Bill: Myriam, I am impressed by these high-quality, expertly laid out, quality teaching videos...introduction to Gouache. Well-spoken, quickly but humanely timed (about 250 words per minute?), and articulated nicely in your accent, your two introductory videos have the feel of an experienced, professional teacher with a well laid out Lesson Plan. Thank you for these performances. Makes learning so much easier.
Not going to lie. I always do recommend practicing a little bit and just kind of getting yourself into the painting mood also to figure out the consistencies of the medium itself. Obviously, if you've been painting for a decade. I wouldn't figure you would need to do this. But it is a great beginner tip for certain. I personally, just like to paint anything as practice, but still working on all the techniques. Such as blending, the right use of water to paint, layering, you know, all the good stuffs. Just another suggestion to try, if you feel up to it of course! Might have to ease your way. But I wouldn't necessarily focus on taking too much time, or trying to make it look immaculate. Just loosen up and have fun with the practice! ANY WHO, ya'll take care!
Oh gurl! Thanks to you and Strathmore for THE most helpful "how to" video on gouache. Seriously so informal and right to it. No fluff, no individual branding just pure information and how to. I love this.
Very good video! No bullshiting, just getting to the point and showing the good and bad outcomes. That's exactly what I need for gouache. Thanks Myriam! 👍🏼😉
This was so helpful, I tried out my new Gouache paints and was a bit disappointed that it didn’t look as nice and clean as some of the Gouache pieces I had seen online. Your tips really helped ♥️♥️♥️
Trust me, I feel like that ALL THE TIME. Don't compare yourself, it'll only bring you down. Practice practice practice, and then one day, you'll paint a piece that you'll look at and go " I would love that if I saw it done by someone else", :) It's the best feeling. But what you described happens to all of us
The tip about consistency of the mix is so helpful! Thank u💗 Edit: omgosh so many exercises! I feel like this is the stuff I never hear from other art content creators. Thank you😭
I really needed this series. I feel like Gouache 101 videos that are structured and clear are very rare on RUclips. I've found that there are a lot of structured 101s on Watercolor, Acrylics, and Oil but not a lot on Gouache.
I bought my gouache kit over two years ago. I use watercolor most of the time (I'm not very good but it's the medium in painting that i'm most familiar with), so the transition from watercolor to gouache can be a bit unnerving. I bought my gouache kit without any prior knowledge to it and try to follow how the tutorials/speedpaint of different artists go. Your videos are so concise and you explain them really well. You delve deeper and actually show us the ropes. :) I haven't used gouache that much in an opaque manner so I am looking forward to picking them up again! Just bought new synthetic brushes from Daler Rowney. A bit intimidated, but I hope it goes well. Will use your tutorials for the whole process. Thank you!
This is such an amazing tutorial. I get so much information in so little time, without being rushed or overwhelmed. This video has taught me a lot, because you managed to verbalise and show those 'intangible' skills other teachers leave up to practice. I'm sure even with all your skill and experience, you have worked very hard to get this video to be so concise yet so amazing. Wow.
These are awesome exercises and so many useful tips! Especially when it comes to gouache that can be a tricky medium to learn how to use it at first, these exercises are really useful to understand better how gouache works! And as for any medium, the more you practice it the better you get hang of it!
Really thank you so much for the details in this tutorial because I kinda gave up on gouache tutorials, a lot of them are just videos of people painting a piece with no real knowledge on how to actually work with the medium... they don’t really explain what they’re doing or why they’re doing it. They often say it’s like if water color and acrylic had a baby. Which I can understand, but I have never seriously worked with acrylic only water color, so I tend to use it as watercolor but that’s not even why I have the paint to begin with! At times I can be a visual learner, but in the instance of being completely new to a subject I need to have some background info, so thank you deeply for this.
This was extremely helpful. I only started gouache 3 days ago and the most difficult part as a beginner has been mixing the colours. The other tutorials didn't give a detailed description of the consistency of water so this was really helpful. Until now I had just tried playing around with it and get a feel for it. I couldn't mix a lot of paint at a single time because it dries faster then watercolors and if I didn't mix a lot of it at a single time a lot of patches will be visible in the result. And while that can be fixed by applying a more opaque layer it would also make it a bit harder to layer colour. As you said the ideal situation would be if the base layer was dilute it would be easier to layer but doing that has been harder then I had expected. Thats why the exercises you have suggested will be really helpful.
This was most helpful asI don’t paint with gouache on a regular basis and needed a refresher. Love the exercises: clear and useful in understanding the best way to achieve good results. Thank you!
I wish I had seen this video before I started using gouache the first time. It would’ve been so helpful to me, as I became so frustrated, unaware of how actually to use gouache, especially the amount of water needed or little water needed to get the results I was striving to achieve. . Your exercises are incredibly good ones for learning how to use this medium. Thank you and Strathmore!
Thank you for a very thorough video with so much information on gouache. I will be watching it again and taking notes! It is really informative and interesting!
Thank you for sharing these exercises! I'm a beginner so this was such a helpful video and I'm very pleased with my results. I'll definitely practice these more!
OMG, I’ve been looking for good gouache tutorials to help me start, but haven’t been able to find any until I stumbled upon this one! Thanks SO much. 🙏 This was a great help! 👍
thank you for teaching us i have been an artist for 25 years mostly liquitexacrylics im new to gouache i got a set usartsupply 36 color i love all mediums
Thank you! I needed this to get back to using gouache!!! I have the caran d'ache studio PAN gouach set which I got because it's more convenient to set up but it's not as opaque as tube paints. Luckily the paint itself seems pigmented so adding white tube paints helps make it more opaque without making it too light.
I am so happy I found your series on gouache. These exercises are just what I need to learn how to handle the medium better. I will be using them with acrylic gouache. Maybe someday you will make a video on using it.
Thank you for this video! I found this such a helpful beginner video, alone with the previous one. I had no idea that i was supposed to mix the paint with water before painting! So it's nice starting from the very basics
ellechanted Mistakes are your BIGGEST teacher, the more you make the quicker you progress so never view practicing as a negative - it’s a definite positive.
Thank you for this! I truly appreciate the work you did to produce this content its so helpful as I've always wanted to learn gouache but have really struggled. Can't wait to go home and try these techniques. Thanks again!
Fantastic video! I paint and teach painting of a different medium, ant it is a challenge to be both clear, through, and concise as you have been here. I hope to start experimenting with gouache, and I love your suggested exercises.
Thank you! This helped soooo much! Especially in terms of getting the right consistency! I always thought it was like a preference thing so I thought using it out of the pan/tube would be fine if it’s something like jelly gouache. Now I understand why I struggled with certain things.
Amazing video! I just bought my first gouache set and because I normally works with watercolors, the adjustment has been pretty hard. Your exercises have really helped me!! :)
Good job, you explained it so clear. Kinda wish someone would explain oils. How to paint alla prima, you know wet into wet. Alot youtube videos on Indirect painting. Where you draw first, or do a undertone. But alla prima In oils sounds more appealing to me. Been looking hard for explanation on It.
Heyyyyy!! I Just want to say I have been very patient and waiting a long long long time for you to try METALIC INKS and METALIC PAINTS in your work. Please make my dream come true! :) Pleaseeeee! You're work is amazing and you're so talented! Thanks for all your videos! :)
Hi Myriam! This might be answered in the next videos but what do you think about color blocking? I noticed most gouache artists use that technique when finishing pieces but I really struggle with it. Thank you so so much for these exercises ❤
Those tissue papers are basically what i use too ahah. :) Wow, i think I've actually learnt that i perhaps use my gouache a little too watered down than how much more opaque it can actually be used! Thanks for sharing these
I feel that I need to use a lot of paint for what I need, compared to the amount of paint I would use in watercolor for the same portion of paper. Is it also your experience? Guess that makes sense as we use less water... But not sure if I may be using it wrong, looks like tubes will run out so quickly! Thanks for your tutorials, it's really helpful and you explain everything perfectly 😊
Thanks for the video series. I'm excited to give gouache another go after swearing it off for years. What is the tape that you use for masking? I didn't see that in any of the lists. Thanks!
I notice you blocked out a grid using some kind of tape, which you then remove at the end for nice neat edges? Is this regular scotch tape? Or something special? I'd like to keep my exercise sheets as reference tools, so I'd prefer they look neat like your examples.

Pronounced Goo. Ash. It’s French !
Спасибо!
That's a lot of paint😲
Thanks for the video series. I'm excited to give gouache another go after swearing it off for years. What is the tape that you use for masking? I didn't see that in any of the lists. Thanks!
Thank you~~
Thank you. Great video. What tape did you use?
You are amazing
This was very useful than you so much
Thank you
Perfect videos, thank you so so much, beauty!! 😘
I am guilty of spending more time watching these videos than practicing myself. 🙂
I find this one really useful though! ❤ 👃
thank you great "eggsersices " 👀
What is the pink tape called for making areas? Is it just Washi? Painters tape?
I notice you blocked out a grid using some kind of tape, which you then remove at the end for nice neat edges? Is this regular scotch tape? Or something special? I'd like to keep my exercise sheets as reference tools, so I'd prefer they look neat like your examples.
I use masking tape and then remove it by heating it with a hairdryer to minimise tears :)
