Allow your self to make dozens and dozens of bad art pieces. Quantity is so important." YES! Wisdom you have young Jedi!

Watching this makes me feel better about getting started. I recently got my hands on some gouache but was to nervous about messing up So they've been sitting on my desk for the past month :\\
Your tip about the predictability of watered down gouache as opposed to watercolor is so spot on!! Thank you! I never realized that, consciously, but I guess I kinda suspected it. Oh, not related, but your voice is so pretty, love to hear your videos, too!
I really love your painting at 12:40 because every portrait I paint, the person never has any facial features aside from completely blacked out eyes due to personal feelings and anger that I have. So I just really loved that one
I got my first gouache set 2 years ago for a birthday present and have loved them since. At the time I had only heard of gouache maybe 2 times before and instead of watching tutorials I just hopped right in. I've never had trouble with dry or wet gouache and I think it's one of my favorites because of how it can be opaque or transparent and it's a rlly interesting texture! It's a great paint and I totally recommend!!
You are honestly not just saying this to be nice but your art and channel is the only one on RUclips that inspires me draw. I’m just in awe over your art and painting techniques it’s just amazing to me. I’m 15 and I just ordered gouache the other day the “Jelly” one and I’m so excited to paint with it 💕💕💕
Hi, I’m 15 and I am French, and you inspire me everyday day to improve at painting! Gouache scares me a lot, but this video made me realize that it could be fun to play with! Have a nice day :)💜
Thank you so much for this video, I was struggling a lot and not feeling well and honestly your kind tips really made me feel better and more hopeful about my future use of Goauche.
Thank you so much! I just bought my first gouache paints after working in watercolour for years. I'm really excited to learn to use them, and this was really helpful. By the way - your work is STUNNING. Your use of colours is blowing my mind (those sketchbook studies?! 😱)
I love gouache! I’ve recently started using it and for me it is absolutely the perfect medium. I love how versatile it is and the results blow me away.
I appreciate your non-music background, so I can keep my own music playing while I watch. (Usually I mute videos that have music playing and read the captions.) Great point about pushing through that the feeling that it gets messy. I have been learning gouache, and I noticed that happening too.
I just got my first guache set yesterday, so I'm watching this late. :) But what you said about doing lots and lots of drawings pinged with me. I'm a writer in my day job, and I just recently told a bunch of students that you learn a *lot* more by writing six stories than you do by writing one story and rewriting it five times. Early stage writers (and a lot of more experienced writers who should know better) agonize over single stories for ages and ages. I guess it's good(? LOL!) to know that it's not only writers who have that problem. :) But yes, more new work is much better than lots and lots of reworking.
Did you mean to wright “another video that fails to not fill me with joy”? It first seemed like you were hating then I read the second sentence and understood what you meant.
My first experience with gouache was actually great haha. I dunno how I manage to not hate my first painting with gouache! But I really love it now, even though I don't use it that much. I'm still trying to get better at drawing in general so that's why I didn't touch gouache for a while, but this year I've finally decided I'm going to just give it a go! This video was really helpful, I need to stop trying to make perfect paintings and just make bad things!
Thanks so much for posting. I’ve learnt more in this video than all the other RUclips videos on gouache. I will definitely sign up for your Skillshare class.
I love your tiny painting! I also love your overall manner when speaking. I'm about to try out gouache for the first time, so thanks very much for this. Subscribed!
YES FINALLY!! someone will do a good review on the HIMI gouache. I have been trying to find a good review for months, that was not from a beginner or not sponsored.
You are amazing! I have 3 years old child and I can't find time to paint or discover new mediums. I really hope that in the future I'll be able to find time to learn new techniques and continue with my hobbies and interests. Big hello from Serbia. 🙂
I really wanted to take the time to say that this video not only helped me with some amazing tips, but it also helped built my confidence with my new gouache pallet and I’m really happy I watched this video!😊❤️
I really enjoy watching others teach beginners! I think you do a wonderful job focusing attention and conveying your ideas to the viewers. I use gouache from tubes too. I prefer watercolor paints and re-wetting gouache is never as enjoyable for me. I used it when I had to for work but I enjoy watercolor painting much more. Your a lovely instructor and I want to thank you for your enjoyable content!
I'm really looking forward to your review of the MIYA/HIMI gouache set. I've been looking at it for awhile (it seems cute and convenient) but there's very little information on it. So I've been going back and forth between the Arteza gouache or MIYA. Do you think one is significantly better?
Oof, that's a hard call. I can't summarize everything right now, but I can say that I've had more fun with the MIYA/HIMI set than I did with the Arteza gouache. :]
I don't have the arteza guache but I just recieved the miya himi pallet after ordering it on my birthday. I didn't know that it was shipped from china so it took like 15 ish days to get to america. I'm really enjoying the pallet so far and I've already taken it to my local coffee shop and painted there, it's not too heavy but it is kind of an awkward medium between big and compact. It is a pretty good quality and I definitely recommend it because you get a big bang for your buck. Sorry for the huge paragraph
I like to start my watercolors first and then mix gouache into them in certain areas to give it an impressionistic look. Painted in watercolors for several years, went to oils for 10 and then into acrylics for 5 or so and now use gouache and watercolors. They’re all fun!
This has been SO INCREDIBLY helpful. THANK YOU! Thank you so very much. I really appreciate this, I've been playing around with gouache for the last few months on and off, and while I absolutely love it, I've been a bit frustrated coming from an oil painting background, but ALL of your tips are super helpful. I found myself going "ohhhhh!!!!!! I seeeeeee!" a lot! so, again, thank you! PS. you've got such a soothing and calming voice! It's very nice to listen to! Reminds me of Georgia Hardstark from one of my all time favorite podcasts, 'My Favorite Murder'.
SO GOOD! Watched this 3X. Lost the contrast in a gouache painting today. Tomorrow I'll go in and get it back! Your Top 5 Gouache Tips are pure gold. Following you now on IG, too. Thanks!
Thank you for the video! I really love watching you work in opaque mediums, the painterly style you have is so nice :) I started with opaque mediums like acrylic and gouache, but turned to watercolors to let go of perfectionism. With opaque mediums, I could never stop fiddling with my work, because you can just keep layering without consequence. You don't really get that option with watercolors, you have to know when to stop. I'm still trying to get the hang of it. Gouache is much more natural for me, but it's very difficult for me to loosen up with it.
For me the delicate quality of gouache makes it challenging to paint loosely with it, so I feel you! I think what has helped me is doing tons of layers, then you can build up the marks.
When i first started with gouache, people had different opinions and painting styles. What i related to as a painter who enjoys acrylic, i just thought of working with acrylic, a damp watercolor brush, laying down colors then blending with water. It works for me.
I'm not even working on gouache right now, but I couldn't resist watching a video of yours 😂💞 Always so exciting to see your pieces transform with each layer! So loose, effortless, and stunning. ☺
Thank youuuuu, I needed this video on gouache so badly! Do more please, gouache is such a difficult medium to handle. Thank you for your work, you are great!
Oh my, thank you so much. I was sort of putting off trying to learn gouache because my first go around with it was so frustrating. This video gave me the advice I needed to try again and it certainly sparked my creativity! Thank you!
Awe. I really love your videos maam. You always motivate me to do more and practice more because I just love art. It makes all my fears and demons away. Your videos really help me a lot to keep moving and embrace my mistakes and to try harder and explre more. I love how you motivate us to be better in what we love. Thank you for inspiring me maam.
thank you so much for this! I just tried my gouache colors for the first time yesterday night and I felt so frustrated and kinda lost. This really helped me, I took notes and gonna try again later ;)
Great video, watching this demo process reminds me of watching Bob Ross a bit where u see him do something that looks off but then he makes it all work in the end. I guess its exactly what u pointed out with the Messy phase of gouache painting, I've definitely experienced it. But as you said you gotta keep trucking and redefine the contrasts and it'll hopefully come together. Thanks for the tips!!
Love the noses! I just did my first gouache painting! had no clue what I was doing. I found the contrast thing to be very true and the values. But consistency was my biggest struggle! I mainly work with watercolor so gouache was a bit strange and not knowing how thick or thin it was suppose to be but in the end my portrait turned out ok! I think I ended up going back and forth thin thick thin. On my swatch sampling I liked the more watercolor effects than the opaque. I will have to see if you have a video on how to use gouache with watercolor?! I love Chris Hong!!
Such a great video, thanks for these tips. I feel like I've learned so much just from watching your flow and layering. Thank you so much for posting it!
My dad and I accidentally bought gouache instead of acrylic. I was so afraid because I don’t know Jack about gouache and thought my project was gonna be ruined. Thank you so much! This helped my nerves a lot! I love the way the opacity looks elegantly messy, I’d love to make that my style
That’s was super fun to watch and very informative. THANK YOU! would love just watching you paint and talk about whatever is on your mind lol sort of like a Paint With Me 🦋
Awe you are so reassuring🥰thanks for the great video! I just found out about guache, I love acrylic and watercolour, so I'm sooooooo excited to try it! You do great work ❤
I find gouache very interesting hihi (mixing colors to get the skin tone) 💞 I never tried it before but I want to try 😁. I'm still learning both watercolor and acrylic. I'm also curious about oil painting. I'm in the stage where I want to improved my drawing/sketching and I sometimes paint. We can do it. Practice more! Be healthy keep safe and God bless everyone 😚🙏💞
I'm a watercolor artist trying to get a grip on gouache as I purchased a very pretty set recently and I get so frustrated as well loool, thank you so much for this! Watercolor wasn't easy at all either and I know I gotta learn again.
Very helpful video! Thank you so much! I'm just starting with gouache to work on some folk art stuff. :) Have to say that I love the birds singing on the back of the audio.
How do you prevent mold? And do you put the paint out on a palette or do you dip your brush directly into the jars? If you dip it in, how do you prevent color contamination?
Pendlera After An example: you want to paint a rose and you want the colour to be a pastel one. Pick up some red, put it on the pallete, then rinse your paintbrush in water, then pick up the white.
Also one thing to keep in mind even though watercolor brushes and synthetic can be interchangeable, gouche is a bit more abrasive on the brush so I recommend to have your watercolor and gouche brushes separate because you want to keep the pointy tips for your watercolor brushes
I needed to hear this rn. I was feeling down about my ruined piece that i was about to throw into trash but i willed myself to continue after hearing this
Hey nice! It's okay for pieces to go wrong sometimes, all part of learning either how a medium works or how to fix issues that may come up later, and it's also okay to stop if your not vibein w/it
I just want to say, 2 things in here helped me IMMENSLY, before this I barely knew anything about gouache a cheap set was given to me so I tried to treat it as watercolor and put it in pans, always getting frustrated that it would be so muddy and watery. I saw this video and after 4 failed portrait attempts, i armed myself with iced tea a Pinterest reference, red blue yellow (and white, all straight out of the tube) and season 2 of Brooklyn 99. What followed was the best portrait I’ve painted no joke. From now on I will probably always do them this way, if you are having trouble, try just using the primaries, simple reference and don’t stress about getting all the details in :)
Hello! :) Question: So would you put your gouache in pans again, or this time you will use it straight from the tubes? Is your palette plastic or ceramic? I hope you don't mind the questions, I just ordered gouache and have no experience.
Cons Bulaquena i got arteza gouache after I used the older ones. I haven’t put them in pans and I don’t intend to, as for pallets I just use what I have around me (which probably isn’t wise) I’ve used a ceramic plate I made a couple of years back and a piece of glass from a frame.
Emiliapocalypse I’m extremely happy with them, sadly my sap green tube got punctured but that’s completely my fault. Happy to hear you’re trying them out. Hope you enjoy them :)
Thanks for this video, it was really helpful! I'm all new to gouache, but watching you work with it is almost therapeuthic :) Now I cant wait to paint!
So excited for this video! 🤗 These are amazing tips! Especially using synthetic brushes. Water control is the main thang about gouache in my opinion. Fancy watercolor brushes might even do more harm than good with gouache! I’ve thought the same darn thing! And gouache works well on so many kinds of paper. As long as it’s not thin. There aren’t the same issues of needing pigment to bloom exactly right as with watercolor. With gouache you just slap it on. I actually find it easier to use dried (rewet) paint but I have a ton of little idiosyncrasies about how I rewet it that would be so hard to explain and I wouldn’t have been able to do it that way a year ago.
At first it never occurred to me to keep old colors on a palette and then to rewet them, you can actually save time because you can save good colors you liked!
1. Use fresh paint.
2. Use a limited palette.
3. Use synthetic brushes (link in description)
4. Adjust consistency from thin to thick (start like watercolor)
Bonus #1. Cover larger areas first.
5. Focus on contrast (when you see it's losing its shape)
Bonus #2. If your values are good, you can go crazy with the colors.
Bonus #3. *JUST KEEP TRYING*
Bonus #4. Try using different types of paper.
thanks alot, i like knowing all the tips and then watching the video im impatient like that 😂
What’s the best paper to use?
What are the names of the colors or how to know how to pick the exact shade for the yellow, red and blue?

I wish I had discovered gouache before watercolour. I am struggling with WC especially after learning to paint in acrylic . Love your style.
I started with WC and then did Acrylic and then went back to WC and i couldn't like it anymore! Love gouache as it's the perfect in between

I literally wasted half of a sketchbooks paper trying to get it to work and it…just doesn’t. No matter how hard I try. It makes me sad

I guess its exactly what u pointed out with the Messy phase of gouache painting, I've definitely experienced it. But as you said you gotta keep trucking and redefine the contrasts and it'll hopefully come together. Thanks for the tips!!
i love your art style!!
I'm new to gouache and this is sooo helpful, thank you for posting.......love watching your painted face take shape! You're so talented! :)
thanks for this video 😭 and your himi gouache review! i ordered it and im really excited to get back into painting, all thanks to your videos 😊
I love Chris Hong!!
so glad i found this!!! I've been banging my head against my canvas all day getting rly stressed with my gouaches, and this is really helpful!
I'm planning to start my journey with gouache as my medium. This is really helpful and inspiring.
Enjoyed this so much. Just bought a set of winsor and newton gouche....haven't cracked it open yet🙊
Useful video, thanks. I love the bird sounds.
Excellent video! Especially on the messy points of using gouache. Truth be told, I find myself in those moments with most paints-except Watercolors.
I am so glad that I bumped into your video!!! 😍😍😍...more power to you!
i painted with gouache like its acrylic or oil. that explains why i was always complaining about it being dry. thanks for this video
This video is actually so helpful!!! Can't wait to check your skillshare class :D
this video made me feel better. thank you ❤
Very helpful video! Thank you so much! I'm just starting with gouache to work on some folk art stuff. :)
Have to say that I love the birds singing on the back of the audio.
you make it look SO EASY. you're a wonderful artist!! definitely subscribing :)
Can anyone share some best practices on how to seal/preserve gouache paintings? Thank youu 🥺
This is an excellent video! I'm just starting with gouache coming from a watercolor background, so I found your tips and experience very helpful.
i keep my gouache in jars....cause ain't no gouche dryin out today😂😂👍
How do you prevent mold? And do you put the paint out on a palette or do you dip your brush directly into the jars? If you dip it in, how do you prevent color contamination?
Pendlera After An example: you want to paint a rose and you want the colour to be a pastel one. Pick up some red, put it on the pallete, then rinse your paintbrush in water, then pick up the white.
No not Today!!
@@yee6818 i feel like I'm wasting paint when i do that 😩😩
I have that same himi gouache. Was my first time using any kind of gouache. Still one of my favorites.
Also one thing to keep in mind even though watercolor brushes and synthetic can be interchangeable, gouche is a bit more abrasive on the brush so I recommend to have your watercolor and gouche brushes separate because you want to keep the pointy tips for your watercolor brushes
Oh my gawd so calming i fell asleep
someone should submit this to the accidental ASMR channel
thank you!!! this was very helpful, I love your art!
This was very helpful, thank you!
SkullySkies I just ordered the arteza gouache today. How are you liking it so far?
Emiliapocalypse I’m extremely happy with them, sadly my sap green tube got punctured but that’s completely my fault. Happy to hear you’re trying them out. Hope you enjoy them :)
SkullySkies thanks! I’m looking forward to trying them out. But it’s a bummer about your sap green, I wish they sold their tubes individually ✌️

My prayers have been answered! I'v been having such a hard time with gouache XD! Thank you so so so much
Shantall Alam ugh same
