For beginners, when picking your primary colors, make sure to get a magenta, not a red, or else you won't get nice purples or pinks, but more browny or salmony like colors when mixing it with blue or white.
clø Reds like Magenta, or primary red have a purple/pinkish base to them, which means that when they are altered or mixed, their undertones will come out and tint the mix. So with magenta you will be able to optain nice pinks and bright purples. But Reds like spectrum or cadmiun have a more orange base, so will tend to have more yellow in the hue they create, resulting in salmon and rust colours if mixed with white, for example. Am I making sense ? Ideally, one could get both a cool (magenta, primary(in the winsor and newton set)) and a warm (spectrum, in the wn set) red to start, as they will allow someone to mix a wider range of secondary colours :)
clø Also, primary colours in art are red, yellow and blue. Magenta, yellow and cyan, are the primary colours in the Cmyk model, which is what is used in computers and printing, not in traditional art.
Myriam... here's a tip you didn't mention... when painting with gouache... to prevent activating the underneath layers give your work a light spray of matte fixative between layers when dry... I've been using Krylon Matte Fixative since... like for ever... for my finished work whether it be charcoal, pencil, gouache, ink, even watercolors and sometimes pastels (be very careful with pastels) I use Krylon Matte Finish... which also comes in Gloss and Satin Finish as well... they will seal your work are absolutely waterproof and will NEVER yellow... I know because I've been using them for over 40 years NEVER NEVER NEVER use hair spray... because they will yellow over time, can become sticky under humid conditions can react with the chemicals and binders of your pigments and most of all they are not made for art work... Krylon is made for the artist and their work.
Hi Karl, I do address your point on hairspray in a pinned post at the top of the comments. You are absolutely right that it isn't the right thing to use, but because gouache doesn't require heavy fixing, a light dusting seems to be just fine, in my experience. But obviously I agree that it isn't the better choice, and to avoid it if possible. Your first tip is amazing, thank you for sharing, I'll make sure to implement it myself, I've wanted to try doing underpaintings more, but don't have acryla gouache for it.
Will using the fixative give the finished work more light permanence? I have only recently started painting again after a 20 odd year gap (!!), and have been using watercolour. I have watched hundreds of different tutorials (I'm frequently awake in the night with pain, so I watch the videos to take my mind off the pain), and as a result have bought an inexpensive set of gouache paints to try. I ultimately want to be able to frame my finished pieces and either give to friends and family as gifts, or hang on my own walls, so I just a little bit wary of using the gouache for that reason. All advice appreciated, thanks👍😊
The thing with art school is (I have a bachelors degree in visual art) they assume you already know the basics of all the art materials. You go to art school to explore mediums and be an artist, find your style. Art school is there to help you succeed as an artist not learn how to paint and draw.
So true. When I asked specific questions about painting they just wanted me to figure it out for myself. I thought, Then why am I here?!! It was not an art school, and it was long ago. I did get my B.A. degree in visual arts which turned out to be a total waste.
[Read for extra gouache info] Hey everyone! Thank you for the incredible response to my gouache tutorial, nothing makes me happier than hearing that I could help other artists! :) You guys have been amazing in the comments, and there has been some great information shared that I wanted to pin for everyone to see so here goes : - A lot of people have been correcting me on the whole pan/tube things, and have mentioned that Caran d'Ache does a gouache in dried pans. I have not tried it myself but it's great to know, and I hope to be able to review it one day! :) (Credit : MsBeckySharp, PuchyTats, WhereAngelaArts, Kyomii, SharonBear, Stephanie Damianov, Douglas Elliot) - Regarding my hairspray tip, a couple of people have told me that it isn't ideal, as it is probable it will yellow and affect the work. I trust that is true, and although I also have had that problem with more professional fixatives, if you intend on exhibting or selling your originals, make sure to use a professional fixative (Connie Faye recommends Fix by Krylon. I have no experience with it myself. ) and ideally get one that is UV resistant. ( Credit : Connie Faye and Clariece K) - Jaune John recommends that, when putting a kit together, to choose a magenta rather than a red, as it will help get nicer purples and pinks when mixed with white and blue, as opposed to browny, salmony colours. - q8Asami taught me that the reason there are different versions of primary colours within the Winsor and Newton starter kit is because they include warm and cool hues of each three primaries, to aid in being able to mix all colours form that basic kit. - Douglas Elliot mentionned one could seal a painting with wax, and included a very useful link. I'll be sure to check that technique out myself one day! www.wetcanvas.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-1351558.html This was all such great info, thank you everyone! I'll try and keep this updated if any new things come up! Keep being wonderful, all of you ^^
thank you so much for this, I've been struggling so much with getting the right ratio of paint to water, and this was just the video I needed!! learnt a lot from it to help with my assignment
This is the best, most comprehensive gouache video I've ever watched, and I've watched a lot of them lol. There's even a great life lesson at the end. In particular I really wish someone would have suggested non-watercolor brushes to me when I started. That is definitely the source of my frustration with gouache and I can't wait to go buy new brushes, like, tomorrow. Your art is beautiful and you're a wonderful teacher. Thank you for making this, it's the gouache video I've been waiting for.
I paint with guoache, and not until now do I really understand how to use it, THANK YOU SO MUCH. I've been waiting for years for a video that REALLY explained the whole process!
My teacher in my high school art class showed us this video!!!! I was so excited to see your video on the screen! I have been following you for over a year, you are such an inspiration.
When i saw 40min i thought i would just watch the beginning but it was so interesting i actually end up watching the whole video. I learned a lot, thank you !
@@chayakali7326 I actually found an online store based in my country that sells Talens gouache in 100ml tubs for ~$1. I don't know if they ship overseas though.
I would try to avoid using hairspray on any art, especially if you plan on selling it or displaying it. Hairspray will most definitely yellow. Workable Fix from Krylon would be ideal to use. Krylon now makes a low odor Fixatif that's pretty good to use.
Thanks Connie, you are right, and somebody did mention this to me in the comments earlier on too. I merely suggest using hairspray for quick fixing, as gouache doesn't need an extensive amount of fixing, so a light spray is enough and doesn't affect the work as much, but you are absolutely right that for something more professional and durable one should use a good brand of fixative. Although most of them do yellow over time in my experience, unless properly UV resistant. Thank you for the brand suggestion too :)
A great many artists use cheap hairspray as a fixative, particularly pastel artists. If it's just for you or your sketchbook & you're not displaying publicly or selling, it's nobody's business but yours.
It's good to know the difference between all these other paints. And Gouache. As I'm new to the Art Community. Plus this video has taught me a lot. Because I know nothing about painting. As I've been putting off painting, for month's XD Though I finally decided to START... Thanks for sharing, Myriam!
Thank you for making this video, I'm just now looking at learning all I can about Gouache...recommended by my sister so... here we are. Your information is invaluable.
Managed to make it to the end? The time just flew by! This is an amazing technique video; so much info packed into a short time with no waffle, whatsoever! I loved the demo at the end which demonstrated in quick time the potential of gouache, and the little pep talk was a cute little motivator. Thank you, Myriam. You have no idea how valuable your video is.
the color choice of the set was probably giving you cool and warm yellow , same with red and blue , black and white so you can basically mix ANY color with those
Oooooh, that makes sense! I have never worked that way, so I didn't know about that, but it's very interesting to know, thank you :) I feel like that is basic info about art that I should know but for some reason never did, haha
I love the tip of a colder material pallet to keep paints wet longer, and the idea of a swatch paper to re-wet when mixing again! Such great advice, filming, and narration. Thank you! 🙏🏼
If there's just one video to watch on gouache, it's this one! You go over so many things and really pay attention to detail in order to give your viewers the best and most effective information/tutorials! Well done. I now want to go buy a titanium white gouache to mix in with my watercolors to practice different techniques you showed:) Loved it all!
Since seeing you work with angled brushes, I decided to get some when I saw them, and I think I like them too! Thank you for that! Watching your videos keeps me company when I want to paint and I appreciate it!
Mind officially blown! I’m a watercolorist with a new set of gouache. I was intimidated a bit until I saw this video. I savored every word. Thanks for investing your time in educating the world!
I just "stumbled" across your video today and all I can say is WOW! Amazing! I will watch it over and over & probably take notes. So much valuable information in one place and organized so well; this must have taken a long while to put together. Thank you!
It did, haha. at leats a solid full 5 days of work, but I wouldn't have it any other way. The response has been wonderful and just the fact that it could help people makes it all worth it :) Thank you for your support!
I enjoyed this and the length is good because there are fewer Gouache tutorials than other painting possibilities. One concept to add is that Gouache photographs VERY well. It is an added benefit. Thank you for making this for us.
Hi Myriam, just a note that you can get gouache in pans, I have some. They are made by Caran D'ache. They are large pans - about x2 the size of a full pan. Hope that helps 🙂
Well done Myriams. Intelligent video presenters are rare on RUclips. You inspired me to expand my art materials to include gouache. Thanks for uploading this video. All the best. Lee.
i have not done art in 20 years. I have an fine arts degree and was not taught watercolor, gouache, oils or acrylics. I was taught drawing, graphics primarily because that is what they wanted to teach..We had to make a color chart in oils but not allowed to use them for any assignment. I complained to board but nothing was done. I just bought a set of gouache last week and have watched several channel. I finally got some real knowledge of this medium from you. you explain the technique of so very well. Thank you so very much. You are a wonderful delight.
Even after four years I still found this video. Before watching, I almost bought some nice gouache paints, but now I have realized that I am so happy with my watercolors and that I want to explore them a lot more ;) Thanks for all the information, you have made such a dense and complete overview :)
For last these several days i was attracted to learning about painting, and i got a gift that was a gouache paint and i'm so thankful for your video because it help me a lot to understand :' thank you so much:'
This is my second time watching this video since I started painting with gouache six months ago. I picked up a few more tips the second time around. Thank you for being so generous with your knowledge. I have improved by leaps and bounds and feel your help was instrumental.
This is exactly the video about gouache that I was waiting for here on youtube. It's easily the most complete that exists. Awesome. Thank you very much! :D
Thank you! I'm very glad it was helpful, although in hindsight I now find more stuff I would've liked to include, but oh well. It'll be for version 2.0.
There's always moooooorrreee, haha! It exhausts the perfectionist in me, but it's also what makes things interesting 😊 I'll wait a few months, to see how much I learn from more practice, and then I might do an add-on vid if I have enough info to fill one 😁
To answer your question: YES! this video was very informative and calming and I loved it. But if you want my opinion: never apologize about rambling or worrying about making sense or how long you're taking! You did great.
Love this tutorial, I watch it every now and then as a reminder. I use Royal Talens gouache which comes in little glass containers and I find that much more user-friendly than tube gouache. Worth a try if you're interested.
wow! i don't think i have ever watched a 40 minute tutorial in my life, but this tutorial was incredibly thorough, you covered all my questions. Thank you so much i am SUPER excited to begin! :)
I LOVE this video! You aren't rambling at all. Everything is very structured and helpful. I especially love your comment on experimenting and growing from this as an artist. You are such an inspiration! Keep going! :)
That starter kit at 28:05 that you call odd, is actualy the basic choice every art school in Finland uses. For every basic colour - red, blue and yellow - you get a warm and a cold variant. With those you can mix the secondary colours - green, orange and violet - as bright and clean as possible.
I'm so glad you showed your pallet how you use it after your paints have dried! I really want to do this with my pallet and don't want to deal with the tube paints too often. Most other sources say not to do this but it seems to be working for you just fine
You did so well Myriam, with sticking to what the tutorial is about, so don't worry about being lengthy. you stayed on track and demonstrated what you meant. It is beautiful!!
RUclipss scares my sometimes. Like how can it know that yesterday I told a friend I needed to watch some videos about gouache so I know what I need (want) to buy? It's scary, right 🙈😄 I didn't even type gouache in the search bar and RUclips suggests your video! I'm very glad though, because your video is SO informative! I think I got the whole pack of information in just one video. Great job! I love the illustrations you showed in the beginning and totally loved watching you make that hand! Subscribed to your channel and will follow you on IG 😊 Thanks so much for all the time and work you put into this video! Happy arting!!!
Thank you so much!! The whole internet is bloody scary sometimes, for sure.....Targeted advertising is the weirdest thing ever..... I hope you will enjoy gouache as much as I do, thank you for joining my little youtube family ^^
Myriam, it's so nice to see gouache getting a bit of a resurgence lately. I've always thought that it was considered the ugly stepchild of watercolor, but I absolutely LOVE working with it, though more as an opaque layer over top of my watercolor underpainting. For me, it's just a matter of speed. Bravo!!
This is the introduction to gouache I wish I’d had decades ago when I first started dabbling in this medium! The most informative gouache tutorial I’ve seen.
wow im a digital artist mainly so i didnt even know what this was and i have to say thank you for such an in depth and easy to follow video, really love what you were saying at the end too
This has been SO relaxing listening to your advice and voice etc. Learned SO much but also almost fell asleep. Don’t take that the wrong way! It’s a compliment!!
Thank for the brilliant tutorial. I wanted to better understand the differences between watercolor and gouache and you answered nearly all of my questions. What a wonderful service you have provided to other artists. Bravo!
Extremely extensive and well made video, was a very nice watch and I learned alot of information that I didn't know. Thank You! Also your voice is very nice and relaxing lol
This is definitely the best gouache tips video out there. It gave me insight that I have not gotten from other videos and extremely useful since I am taking my gouache palette with me on a month long holiday to try to learn it. Thank you so much for this.
Myriam's Illustrations Oh, I will. I already tested some and I am in love with it. It sure is a perfect medium between water color and acrylics. If you want to see you can check it out on my Instagram @ananabanana1990 I And I will post the more to come in the future. :)
I wish I saw this video before I started out gouache. It answered a lot of questions as to why I wasn't achieving the effects that I wanted. Thank you for putting this tutorial together, I know it required a lot of time and careful dedication to do so.
I'm so happy I found your videos I absolutely love them! Your thumbnails and general aesthetic are beautiful and I'm very inspired. I paint mainly in acrylic and have been painting whilst listening to this video wondering why I haven't tried Gouache yet as so many people have recommended it to me! So so glad I found your videos Myriam :D
You did a great job of showing us how gouache effects work and don't work. I have wanted to try gouache for a while and bought a basic set of colors, but there was really very little information that I saw that showed useful information and techniques like this video does. I work primarily with watercolors and it is very different. I really appreciate that you carefully showed what the thickness of the paint should look like when you add water. The visual of it dripping slowly off the brush was really helpful. Thanks so much. I have subscribed to your youtube videos and will be watching more.
I'm in love with your pallette I love messy and this video was so amazing I'm getting some gouache soon and it was so helpful. But using hairspray will make it yellow over time and make the paper brittle just letting you know BTW I love your paintings so much😁
Thank you very much, you actually reassured me that maybe I should've made a slightly cleaner one for the purpose of the video, I felt super self conscious, hahaha 😳 As for the hairspray, you are right of course, but that also happens with a bunch of artist grade sprays, and depends on the paper your are spraying on. You'd need a uv resistant spray to avoid that the best. Ultimately though you are absolutely right, in the sense that it's just better to use an artist grade spray to do extensive spraying, as they tend to be better quality, and have a more even coating spraying, but for gouache I tend to use hair spray because I don't need a lot of fixative, so a light spray is good enough for my use of it. But you're input definitely is a good point 😊
Fantastic video. This is the kind of content that I cherish! Such a treasure trove of information. Thank you for taking the time to make this and help me understand this medium that I'd often wondered about but am yet to try.
I am learning sooo much about how to paint with gouache by watching through Ms. Sanche. I did not learn how to paint with gouache during my college years except through a fellow dorm resident was painting with it.
This video is fantastic. I knew a lot of the aspects you mentioned about gouache (especially compared to watercolor) but I learned so much!! I have been trying to use more gouache and feel like I can more confidently practice with it after seeing this video. Amazing job putting all this info together!
Best art/material video i have seen this year. The amount of help and advice in under 40 minutes was excellent. Really appreciate your research and thoughfulness. Thank you.
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge of gouache. I have started painting with watercolor the last year and have been wanting to experiment with gouache, but had no knowledge of it and your video has been the most helpful
I was so excited for this video and I'm not disappointed in the slightest ❤️Thank you for taking the time to put this together, I can only imagine how much work it was! I completely agree about how important it is to get the amount of water correct! You know me already, I cheat and use this stuff like watercolour (but layering means I can build the opacity and so I prefer it over watercolour) but in the times I've wanted to venture into using it thicker/more opaque it's too dry! I even use hot press and it gives me a textured stroke, aggghhh lol! Also I've been using zinc white for my highlights and getting frustrated that it's not opaque enough, I had no idea there were 2 whites in gouache - doh! 😂 Great video Myriam! 😘😘
Aw, I'm so glad I could help you out! I love your work so much, it's so delicate and poetic.....Thank you for taking the time to watch my lonnnngg vid :)
I bought acrylgouache for my first attempt at gouache which was a terrible idea. I really like it because I'm able to get in shadows better than I can with acrylic. But with acrylgouache it's really hard to reuse it after it's been dried, even when I used an airtight watercolor pallet. Hopefully I can get my hands on just reg gouache.
Yes, it's definitely not made to be deactivated. But how do you find it compared to acrylic? How are the working time, and the colours? You should definitely try normal gouache, I'd love to know if you like them better 😊
I have recommended this video countless times to other artists, and I cannot tell you how much it has helped me , with my journey into gouache .. I absolutely love it .. I didn’t really expect to lol ( I’m watercolorist , for most of my life, and was intimidated by this medium, since much of the approach is against my natural inclinations and experiences with watercolors ) Thank you again , for this wonderful overview .. I’ll keep spreading the word with this link :-)) Thank you
🔺DISCLAIMER ABOUT THE SOUND DISAPPEARING: 🔺 Some people have reported that the audio stopped between 11-15mins. This has nothing to do with the video itself, it was fine until the new RUclips update. It seems to be a problem with RUclips on mobile. The video is fine when watched on a computer, as far as I have tested. If anyone knows any more about this annoying glitch, I would be beyond grateful, because it is really really annoying me right now....T_T What I talk about in that time : - How acrylic/synthetic brushes are easier to use with gouache (in my opinion only, obvs), I show you the brushes I use (The two dagger brushes) and some of the cheap lidl brushes I initially started using gouache with (the turquoise brushes) - I then talk about how gouache changes in value when it dries : I demonstrate how dark colours get lighter and light colours get darker. - Thirdly, I start talking about colour permanence, and then I think the sound comes back on. (Why RUclips, why...........Could you not choose a video I DIDN'T spend a full week working on to glitch on?)
Aww thanks! Yeah I go through periods of depression etc.. when motivation is difficult. But I'm hoping to get back into making videos when I get a bigger art desk (probably in August or September). Hope you're doing well too!
I cannot put into words how informative and comprehensive this video was! You are an amazing teacher, I learned what I felt would have taken days from a live class in just 40 minutes :)) As a beginner, after watching your video, I feel in love with gouache already. Thank you so much for this, add me to the list of your subscribers for sure! :) Much love
Great video, extremely informative and I never got bored. Don't be so apologetic and self doubting about the length of the video and if it's helpful or not, you did a great job!
Thank you!!! ^^ People seem to be enjoying the length and detail, so I'm reassured that it's a format I can keep going with and it isn't detrimental to itself. It was my first proper tutorial, so I felt a bit self conscious, but thank you for the helpful critic :)
Great tutorial! I recently became interested in working with gouache as a medium for a change. Normally I use watercolor and acrylics but for quite a while I have been wanting something that's just in the middle :) Also I didn't notice the bird noises the background before you pointed it out as I got two loud budgies myself lol. Do you have pet birds as well?
I don't, no, I'd love to, but I can't really have pets in my current life set up. My studio/bedroom gives onto our garden, and I often have my windows open, so that's what the bird noises were :) I hope you'll enjoy gouache, I'd love to know how you get on!
I used to paint with acrylic and ended up believing I would never learn to paint. The brush strokes were always very visible. Recently I've started to use gouache and it's great! I love it. Sometimes I struggle with finding the right colors for highlights, but I'll find my way. I don't have any gouache white yet, so I'm using acrylic white untill I've bought gouache whites (zinc and titanium as you just learned me). Thanks for your nice video!
this was extremely helpful! but could you look into fixing the auto focus on your camera? ;; v ;;''' the constant refocusing started hurting my eyes and gave me a headache, thats really my only complaint everything else was done really well! do you think you'll ever do a sketchbook tour? :o id love to see more of your work! also youtube does streaming in case twitch doesn't work out, but hopefully you can stream sometime soon!
Thanks lovely! I'm glad it was helpful :) and sorry about the autofocus, I filmed this video over so many sittings that I sometimes forgot to turn it off. The little flip screen on my camera is surprisingly not that helpful when it comes to judging focus, haha. I do have a couple of sketchbook tours on my channel already, and a few sketchbooks on the go that I'm hoping to tour once finished. The problem with streaming isn't the platform but my internet connection. I'm not sure it is good enough to stream. But the best way to know is to try :) I also lack the time for streams, but it's definitely on my to do list :)
so, this video made me double check the tube of "watercolor" paint I thought I had purchased. I put the color in my water color palette and it keeps cracking and getting on the other water colors, and it was annoying and I didn't know why that kept happening.... well now I know!! lol I accidentally bought a tube of gouache instead of watercolor!!
VERY helpful, comprehensive video on gouache. I am a watercolorist, and it really helped me understand the differences between gouache and transparent watercolor. Well done!
*Myriam* Just a little tip for you. Gouache is available in pan format. There is a really nice set made by Charan Dache, which has 14 pans & a tube of white. Then there is the "jelly" type guache made by Maya, which comes in sets from 12 up to 36 cups which are sealed in little cubes & you peel the top foil back when you get them new. Anyway, great video so I've subscribed & am binge watching all your videos.
Thank you so much for this video! I have learned a few vital things regarding just painting in general! I love that you show examples for every thing you talk about, and wish more people would do that. I actually just bought a little set and I've definitely been doing it wrong and haven't quite got the hang of it, but with your tips I'm super excited to keep trying! So yeah, thanks again and I will definitely be watching from now on! 😸 🖤
+Adelia Y. I have a real-time vid up now, if you wish to check it out :) But streams will happen! And I don't reallt use that many different mediums... I might do a watercolour video, but I need to find the time...
Myriam's Illustrations - Well I still can't seem to get it right, it's making me mad! (Being an insane perfectionist doesn't exactly help. 😋) I'm also using a super cheap set, which I know I shouldn't be. I'm gonna keep trying though!
Thanks for this! I started college in Fine Arts and used Gouache paint for the first time. My teacher never explained any of the comparative factors to watercolors or even how to most effectively paint with them. I would say that all of that really put me off of art school in general as I had such a hard time working with the medium. I went to a poor Catholic high school and we were lucky to have extremely cheap watercolor sets and a few acrylics to work with. I was left completely in the dark and as that was 20+ years ago, the internet was not the resource it is today. Thank you so much for the comparison for each step! I am looking to get back into painting with watercolors, but now I know I can stop looking for that ancient set of Gouache tubes I have somewhere around the house and just get the watercolors I think I will like more. Extremely helpful comparison for anyone looking at the differences between Gouach and watercolors!
For beginners, when picking your primary colors, make sure to get a magenta, not a red, or else you won't get nice purples or pinks, but more browny or salmony like colors when mixing it with blue or white.
Good tip, thanks Jaune!! ^^
thanks for helping I thought it was the opposite but I'm a bit confused what are primary colors ? red, blue and yellow or magenta, cyan ?
clø Reds like Magenta, or primary red have a purple/pinkish base to them, which means that when they are altered or mixed, their undertones will come out and tint the mix.
Myriam's Illustrations thanks a lot :)
Myriam... here's a tip you didn't mention... when painting with gouache... to prevent activating the underneath layers give your work a light spray of matte fixative between layers when dry... I know because I've been using them for over 40 years
NEVER NEVER NEVER use hair spray... because they will yellow over time, can become sticky under humid conditions can react with the chemicals and binders of your pigments and most of all they are not made for art work...
Or u could use acrylic
Thank youuu this seem really reasonable!!! It's a great idea!!💗💗
Me who just sprayed hair spray on pastel be like O.O (well I know now)
I went to art school and I learned more from this video than I did in the time I was there, amazing, amazing video ^-^
Haha, I'm glad I could help :) How did you find art school?
What art school did you go to?
Same.
I was starting to fear I just didn't listen well. >_>
[Read for extra gouache info]
Hey everyone!
Thank you for the incredible response to my gouache tutorial, nothing makes me happier than hearing that I could help other artists! :)
You guys have been amazing in the comments, and there has been some great information shared that I wanted to pin for everyone to see so here goes :
- A lot of people have been correcting me on the whole pan/tube things, and have mentioned that Caran d'Ache does a gouache in dried pans. I have not tried it myself but it's great to know, and I hope to be able to review it one day! :)
(Credit : MsBeckySharp, PuchyTats, WhereAngelaArts, Kyomii, SharonBear, Stephanie Damianov, Douglas Elliot)
- Regarding my hairspray tip, a couple of people have told me that it isn't ideal, as it is probable it will yellow and affect the work. I trust that is true, and although I also have had that problem with more professional fixatives, if you intend on exhibting or selling your originals, make sure to use a professional fixative (Connie Faye recommends Fix by Krylon. I have no experience with it myself. ) and ideally get one that is UV resistant.
( Credit : Connie Faye and Clariece K)
- Jaune John recommends that, when putting a kit together, to choose a magenta rather than a red, as it will help get nicer purples and pinks when mixed with white and blue, as opposed to browny, salmony colours.

This was all such great info, thank you everyone! I'll try and keep this updated if any new things come up! Keep being wonderful, all of you ^^
Myriam's Illustrations thanks for this! My gouache seems to come out streaky when painted on darker paper. i did not add it a lot of water. any tip?
What a great video - I've been looking for this information on gouache for ages , so thank you ... very informative and fun !
thank you so much for this, I've been struggling so much with getting the right ratio of paint to water, and this was just the video I needed!! learnt a lot from it to help with my assignment
Myriam's Illustrations
Myriam's Illustrations you’re amazing. Thank you so much for sharing!!! 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
Thank you very much for such a lovely comment Celia, I'm really glad I could be of help. Let me know how your new brushes treat you :)
I paint with guoache, and not until now do I really understand how to use it, THANK YOU SO MUCH. I've been waiting for years for a video that REALLY explained the whole process!
Comments like yours make me so happy! If I can help even just one person then it's all worth it 😊
My teacher in my high school art class showed us this video!!!! I was so excited to see your video on the screen! I have been following you for over a year, you are such an inspiration.
When i saw 40min i thought i would just watch the beginning but it was so interesting i actually end up watching the whole video. I learned a lot, thank you !
I'm glad, thank you for watching :)
i know this is rlly old but i’ve just watched a feature length film’s worth of these videos ahahha
The Miya himi brand of gouache sells their paints in ‘pans’. So you can technically find gouache out of tubes, even if it’s not common.
Those are not pans. Those are tubs of plastic which of course is different then the pan style she is most likely referring to.
Em Draws I prefer the tubes actually. It keeps the paint fresher and it’s harder to cross contaminate your colours
Also they come in jars (50ml) Talens Gouache extra fine
@@chayakali7326 I actually found an online store based in my country that sells Talens gouache in 100ml tubs for ~$1. I don't know if they ship overseas though.
@Anna Moore Deovir Arts, if I remember correctly.
This video is an incredible resource - you should be so proud of yourself for making it, you've helped out so many people.
Ah, thank you very much, that's so wonderful, I am truly blown away by the response to it!
It's good to know the difference between all these other paints. And Gouache. As I'm new to the Art Community. Plus this video has taught me a lot. Because I know nothing about painting. As I've been putting off painting, for month's XD
Though I finally decided to START...
Thanks for sharing, Myriam!
What a sweet lady with a vocabulary. Good presentation.
Aw, thank you ^^
Thank you for making this video, I'm just now looking at learning all I can about Gouache...recommended by my sister so... here we are.
Wow you've put together a very comprehensive intro to gouache. Thank you very useful. I look forward to a real time video as you mentioned.
Thank you Deanna, I'm glad you enjoyed it :) I hope to be able to get a real time vid together soonish, but we'll see :)
Deanna Kent i
the color choice of the set was probably giving you cool and warm yellow , same with red and blue , black and white so you can basically mix ANY color with those
Oooooh, that makes sense!
Thank you! 🙏🏼
I think that pallette is beautiful! To me the more loved and hevily used a pallete is, the more I like it!
One of the most informative videos I've ever watched on RUclips. No rambling, no obnoxious music, just straight up artistry.
I highly recommend holbein artists gouache, I have been using them for 15 years and I have never had any cracking, no matter how thick.
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the video, there's nothing nicer to hear than that it was helpful to others :)
Yes, a coupe of people mentioned them, I hope I'll get to try them one day!
I was just about to mention those.. I used Gouache in pans back at school in the 90s too..
Three years on and this video is still amazing, and I'm in awe with your responses and comments, you're just such an exceptional soul and artist
Well done Myriams. Intelligent video presenters are rare on RUclips. You inspired me to expand my art materials to include gouache. Thanks for uploading this video.
All the best.
Lee.
Thank you very much Lee, that means a lot :) I hope you are enjoying gouache!
i have not done art in 20 years.
Porcelain palettes are good because they prevent the watercolour/gouache from cracking.
Yes, I discovered that recently too! Thank you! ^^
I'm so glad to read this, it means so much that I could help others improve, even if a tiny bit :) Are you liking gouache?
This is exactly the video about gouache that I was waiting for here on youtube. It's easily the most complete that exists. Awesome. Thank you very much! :D
Thank you! I'm very glad it was helpful, although in hindsight I now find more stuff I would've liked to include, but oh well. It'll be for version 2.0.
Version 2.0.? OMG It's hard to believe that you can do it even more complete hahahaha But that would be super great! :D I can't wait ^_^
There's always moooooorrreee, haha! It exhausts the perfectionist in me, but it's also what makes things interesting 😊 I'll wait a few months, to see how much I learn from more practice, and then I might do an add-on vid if I have enough info to fill one 😁
Hahaha. Oh well, so, from perfectionist to perfectionist, I'm sure the wait will be worth it :D
To answer your question: YES! this video was very informative and calming and I loved it.
But if you want my opinion: never apologize about rambling or worrying about making sense or how long you're taking! You did great.
thank you a lot :) Most guache videos arent that deep so i really appriciate it
I'm glad you enjoyed it, I miss a few things in hindsight, but I tried my best ☺️
No need to apologize for how your pallet looks. It appears happy and used and it’s interesting to view how you work.
Thanks for sharing your findings with us! This video is well done. I especially appreciated the zinc vs titanium white tip. Awesome content. Thanks!!
Thank you! And thank you for watching 😊
I LOVE this video! You aren't rambling at all. Everything is very structured and helpful. I especially love your comment on experimenting and growing from this as an artist. You are such an inspiration! Keep going! :)
Thank you lovely! As always, thank you for your support :)
I think this was the most helpful video on youtube regarding gouache!! Thanx alot :) Love from south korea xoxo
South Korea! Hello! 😃 I'm glad you enjoyed my video, it was a long time coming :) Thank you for your support!
That starter kit at 28:05 that you call odd, is actualy the basic choice every art school in Finland uses. For every basic colour - red, blue and yellow - you get a warm and a cold variant. With those you can mix the secondary colours - green, orange and violet - as bright and clean as possible.
Excellent video, very well put together , to the point without any boring long dragged out segments and filled with content! Well done!
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it!! ^^
I'm so glad you showed your pallet how you use it after your paints have dried! I really want to do this with my pallet and don't want to deal with the tube paints too often. Most other sources say not to do this but it seems to be working for you just fine
THANK YOU!!! I’ve found gouache trickier than expected. Thank you for taking the time to make such a thorough video!
You are more than welcome, thank you for watching! :) I hope you'll enjoy your future gouache endeavours :)
Not scary, perhaps just cookies from when you searched on Google with the same login?
Myriam, it's so nice to see gouache getting a bit of a resurgence lately. I've always thought that it was considered the ugly stepchild of watercolor, but I absolutely LOVE working with it, though more as an opaque layer over top of my watercolor underpainting. For me, it's just a matter of speed. Bravo!!
This is the best "How to"-Gouache video I`ve seen so far. Good work! I`ve learned a lot.
Im glad! Thanks for watching! :)
This is the introduction to gouache I wish I’d had decades ago when I first started dabbling in this medium! The most informative gouache tutorial I’ve seen.
i love your palette!!! aesthetic as heck
Hahaha, thank you!
I especially loved the 'rambles' near the end. About learning and enriching the art experience 😍
Haha, I'm glad, I was worried they were a bit obnoxious!
wow im a digital artist mainly so i didnt even know what this was and i have to say thank you for such an in depth and easy to follow video, really love what you were saying at the end too
Thank you, welcome to the youtube family ^^ I'm glad you enjoyed the video :) Are you going to give gouache a try?
yeah i think ill give it a go :D it seems to be what i wanted from watercolours if that makes sense, haha
This has been SO relaxing listening to your advice and voice etc. Learned SO much but also almost fell asleep. Don’t take that the wrong way! It’s a compliment!!
Your art is gorgeous. I like to paint landscapes so these tips will help me.
Cool!! Let me know how your month of painting goes, I hope gouache will treat you well!
Myriam's Illustrations Oh, I will. I already tested some and I am in love with it. It sure is a perfect medium between water color and acrylics. If you want to see you can check it out on my Instagram @ananabanana1990
I
And I will post the more to come in the future. :)
yay , i was waiting for this!!!
I hope it was worth the wait!😌
I wish I saw this video before I started out gouache. It answered a lot of questions as to why I wasn't achieving the effects that I wanted. Thank you for putting this tutorial together, I know it required a lot of time and careful dedication to do so.
I'm so happy I found your videos I absolutely love them!
Your thumbnails and general aesthetic are beautiful and I'm very inspired.
I paint mainly in acrylic and have been painting whilst listening to this video wondering why I haven't tried Gouache yet as so many people have recommended it to me!
So so glad I found your videos Myriam :D
Thank you so much, that means a lot :) I'd love to know if you liked gouache after you've tried it!
I'm glad I helped and you have a point as well 😅
The real teachers are out here on RUclips and Skillshare. Thank you for sharing 💞💞💞Literally just subscribed to your channel.
Me too! Now subscribed!
Fantastic video. This is the kind of content that I cherish! Such a treasure trove of information. Thank you for taking the time to make this and help me understand this medium that I'd often wondered about but am yet to try.
I'm very glad I could be of help, thank you for your support :)
This is just perfect. You are not only a talented artist but great instructor too. Thanks a lot.
I love how you say guache. It's probably one of the best sounds in the world. lol
Aah, that's amazing, there's no greater compliment thank hearing I could help someone :) I hope you are enjoying gouache ^^
Best art/material video i have seen this year. The amount of help and advice in under 40 minutes was excellent. Really appreciate your research and thoughfulness. Thank you.
This video is my bible now
Haha, thank you! I'm definitely excited about the prospect of streaming, I just need to set it up, and hope my internet can handle it!
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge of gouache. I have started painting with watercolor the last year and have been wanting to experiment with gouache, but had no knowledge of it and your video has been the most helpful
I'm very glad I could be of help, I hope you will enjoy gouache as much as I do ^^
Aww thank you so much for this informative and heartwarming video hehe. I am now inspired to try out gouache.
AMAZING video!!! so much great information! You are a great teacher! Thank you so much!!!!!
Always my pleasure Myriam :) 💕
Incredibly helpful. You anticipated all my questions as soon as they came into my head. Thank you for being so thorough, meticulous, and clear.
You are most welcome, thank you for watching and letting me know it was helpful, it really makes me all worth it :)
I’ll keep spreading the word with this link :-))
Thank you
Great video. I learned quite a lot. Thank you! 😁
I'm glad, thank you for watching!
🔺DISCLAIMER ABOUT THE SOUND DISAPPEARING: 🔺
Some people have reported that the audio stopped between 11-15mins.
This has nothing to do with the video itself, it was fine until the new RUclips update. It seems to be a problem with RUclips on mobile. The video is fine when watched on a computer, as far as I have tested. If anyone knows any more about this annoying glitch, I would be beyond grateful, because it is really really annoying me right now....T_T
What I talk about in that time :
- How acrylic/synthetic brushes are easier to use with gouache (in my opinion only, obvs), I show you the brushes I use (The two dagger brushes) and some of the cheap lidl brushes I initially started using gouache with (the turquoise brushes)
- I then talk about how gouache changes in value when it dries :
I demonstrate how dark colours get lighter and light colours get darker.
- Thirdly, I start talking about colour permanence, and then I think the sound comes back on.
(Why RUclips, why...........Could you not choose a video I DIDN'T spend a full week working on to glitch on?)
Fantastic tutorial! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and techniques! 😊💜
YOU'RE BACK! I was getting worried! Hope you're well Sasha 😊
Aww thanks! Yeah I go through periods of depression etc.. when motivation is difficult. But I'm hoping to get back into making videos when I get a bigger art desk (probably in August or September). Hope you're doing well too!
I completely understand that. I'll be sendig you all the good vibes ^^ Just take it one step at a time, we're all here for you if you need :)
I actually LOVE your palette with all those cracked textures! A great explanation of gouache - I've always been mystified by this medium!
Haha, thanks, I'm glad someone else does too ^^
Great video, extremely informative and I never got bored.
I watch your videos not just for the good tutorials, but I love to hear you talk. :)
Dont use hairspray on painting. Hairspray contains oils, that become yellow over time and sometimes even mold.
Thanks for your nice video!
i wanna watch it so bad but I have to sleep I will watch you in the morning ugh wy do people need sleep sleep is for the weak
Hahaha, damn, I really wish we didn't have to sleep as much as we do. We could almost double our life if we didn't have to!
my favourite new art tutorial on youtube and now becoming one of my favourite artists to watch, you deserve all the best
Thank you very much, that means so much!!
this was extremely helpful! but could you look into fixing the auto focus on your camera? ;; v ;;''' the constant refocusing started hurting my eyes and gave me a headache, thats really my only complaint everything else was done really well! do you think you'll ever do a sketchbook tour?
I do believe this is the DEFINITIVE video on the subject of Gouache paint and how to use it... Thank you so much!! 💖 💖 💖
so, this video made me double check the tube of "watercolor" paint I thought I had purchased. I put the color in my water color palette and it keeps cracking and getting on the other water colors, and it was annoying and I didn't know why that kept happening.... well now I know!! lol I accidentally bought a tube of gouache instead of watercolor!!
Hahaha, your comment made me chuckle ^^
lol
VERY helpful, comprehensive video on gouache. I am a watercolorist, and it really helped me understand the differences between gouache and transparent watercolor. Well done!
Caran d'Ache make gouache in pans, easily reactivated.
Yes, quite a few people have mentionned it, I'll have to give them a try some day!
*Myriam*
Just a little tip for you.
Also, I would love to see more process videos, but with different mediums that you use! And a monthly paintalong would be awesome! Thanks! 🖤
+Adelia Y. Thank you watching, I'm glad you enjoyed it! How are you finding gouache now?
