Digital Photography | Film Photography | Instant Film Photography | Photography on a Budget
I love photography, all types of photography but I don't have a fortune to spend on gear.
I will give most types of camera, genres and techniques a go and I encourage you to give them a try too, no matter what kind of camera you have!
Speaking of which, I like to shoot with a variety of cameras, the stranger the better in some cases! The cameras I use include the very popular entry level DSLR, Nikon D3300, the budget bridge camera; the Panasonic FZ82, and it's bigger brother the FZ1000. Then there are the analogue 35mm/120 film cameras, instant film cameras and retro digital cameras...
If you are like me, you enjoy your photography but the thought of spending a four figure sum on a camera body or lens scares you then this might be the channel for you!

Sunrises and sunsets are the bane of my life as a photographer. Even if the weather forecast says everything is going to be fine, you can bet and bank of low cloud will roll in just in time for poor old me. If you have watched the channel for a while now, you'll know what I mean.
Frustrations aside, did I manage to capture some interesting images in Es Canar? I've included a selection of shots I look at sunset on the nearby beach of Cala Nova too, whilst not facing in the direction of the setting sun I really wanted to practice my seascape photography.

I think you got some really nice seascape sunrise and sunset photographs! - Michelle
@airstreamer Thanks, Michelle. Thanks for watching too, much appreciated.
@@AndrewWaltonPhotography You are welcome!
As Frank Bruno one said ‘That’s cricket ‘Arry’ You got some very good images though Andy, sunrise and sunsets are always a gamble The best ones seem to be when don’t have time or any gear with you 😊👍
Most definitely true Tim. The day we were leaving for the airport was the best sunrise for the week! I was quite pleased with a few of the images, particularly the sunset shots from Cala Nova.
Lovely colours, so you don't really need the sun to appear and melt your sensor 😁. It was worth getting up for! Keith
Cheers, Keith, I must stop using those chocolate sensors. 😀 I'm pleased you thought the images were worth getting out of bed for. Thanks for watching. Andy.
Can't control the weather, but i think you got some good shots nonetheless. My fave was the one at 2:18. All of those early ones have a really nice calm vibe going on. 😊
Cheers, Robert. I was a little annoyed as it was the second best forecast for the morning that week, the best being the morning we flew home!
those images you captured are all beautiful Andrew, definitely not a fail !
@annetteb8906 Thank you so much, Annette. On the back of the camera, they didn't look very good at all. I had really wanted some high clouds to reflect the morning glow but got low clouds blanketing the horizon. Thanks again for watching.
Despite the cloud you got some stunning photos Andy. Great stuff. Certainly looked a nice peaceful area to explore early. 👍🏻🚶🏻♂️🚶♀️
@WanderingwithWatto Thanks Watto, the low cloud was a bit frustrating, and I really wasn't convinced I had captured anything worthy. I did enjoy taking the later shots at Cala Nova, trying to capture the movement in the sea. Both locations were very peaceful. There were a few people out to watch the sunrise in the end.
Those photos are stunning Andy. Not a fail at all. They were very atmospheric and frankly beautiful 👍🧸
Thanks, Ellie. I was hoping for much better conditions, but I was reasonably happy with the images in the end. Thanks for watching 🙂.
I can’t remember seeing you get up that early for a long long time Andy !! Always amazes me just how dark it is closer to the equator before sunrise - we enjoy a more progressive transition back home further north I think. And the only fail is when you don’t get out of bed ! It’s a bit Pot luck with sunrise as you can’t see what’s on the horizon (compared to sunset where at least you have a good sense of what’s coming) so keep persevering with the early alarm calls !!
Cheers, Andrew. I'll be trying to get over the Christmas break for some local sunrises. I don't think I'll be doing it in a T-shirt, though.
@ Shorts 🩳 maybe 🤔
@AndrewHamiltonPhotography 😆
Not a fail at all Andy - some great shots there, some I would be proud of myself!
Thanks, Graeme. I was reasonably happy with the shots, but if that low cloud had been high cloud, it could have been so much better. Cheers for watching.
Shakes fist at the low cloud! Great explanations. Been a good ten years since I’ve tried any sunrise photography. I’m the guy looking for softer colours at sunset! Lovely low light time lapse going in. The angled shots were good but I preferred the direct one. Really helpful video though and your explanations are on point! Great pink hues. ❤
@GENerationXplorers Thanks, guys, I always seem to find sunrise a bit more tricky, but we were on the sunrise side of the island. Cheers for watching.
It’s never a fail, and your pics are beautiful 😊
Thanks, Cara. I was hoping for better, but the weather decided otherwise. I still like some of the images, though.
Beautiful photos! The only photos that fail are the ones you don't shoot! Thanks for sharing! I went on a 11 day cruise, get up every morning before sunrise...1/2 the time had cloud issues, but I still got some keepers!
Thanks for watching. I'm not a natural early riser, so I often fail to shoot sunrise 😀 , typically when I do the homework, it still doesn't work 🙃 . I was happier with the seascape images from Cala Nova, though.
Ah, out of all the holidays we've had the best by far was a last minute booking to Hotel Coral Beach just down from Cala Nova. Did you only take the FZ1000 or did you take the the FZ82 too? Enjoy your jollies, not jealous at all.
I just took the fz1000 for this trip, I tend to alternate them between holidays. I'll be back using the FZ82 soon.
Excellent Andrew. I particularly like the one with the boat and the rope in it. The FZ1000’s cool colour palette comes into its own during these early hours
Hey Andy 😊 I thought your photos turned out very nice. Don’t think a sunrise is ever a fail when you get at least a couple of good photos. Sunrise photography is always a bit of a gamble. No cloud and you’ll get some nice photos but never a very dramatic sky. 100% cloud is always a shame But with some cloud and you have the chance of getting a stunner of a sunrise. Some of my best sunrises have been 10 to 25% cloud coverage. Nice video 😊
@yasminshikingmission Thanks Yasmin, high cloud is always the wish for a good sunrise. One day, I'll get one. It was just typical the best forecast of the week, and we get a bank of low cloud. I did prefer the sunset shots at the end, although I was on the wrong side of the island for a dramatic seascape sunset. Thanks for watching 🙂.
Really great video. Thanks for doing this. I'm very new to photography and looking for something with a good zoom for wildlife photos and video on an upcoming safari. I don't want to lug around massive lenses etc and not overly worried about getting the perfect shots - just footage that would look good on a website and TV for personal RUclips videos. My shots with zoom would all be during daytime. Would this fit the bill or would you suggest something else around this price range? Is it worth paying more?
Hi Simon, the fz82d is a pretty good offering for the money, you also have the Canon sx70 for around about the same price range. I would suggest taking a monopod with you to give you some stability when shooting at full zoom.
@AndrewWaltonPhotography Thanks for that. Just checked it out but the lack of in camera charging via USB will be a deal breaker. I'll need to charge on the go from a power bank.
@AndrewWaltonPhotography Great tip suggesting monopod! I'll get that on my list ASAP
Where was this? I'm gonna be there in the morning haha. All the best from Yorkshire.
Classic Sunglasses shop on C. Ripoche in Las Palmas.
You can't use a LUMIX camera to hear all the gossip that Grandma has to tell about her neighbors. 🤪
@@eciruamekard4440 That is true 😀
Only 1 test needed. Underwater without housing. Gl making your real camera survive that 😉 but it's not good for astrophotography and aurora 😬
I did try it for the Aurora, but it wasn't any better than a phone. I do plan to try it for star-trails as I now have the wide-angle adaptor.
@AndrewWaltonPhotography be sure to have some light in the foreground. 1 thing this series seriously need, is manual mode. Sadly olyjip ignored it on the tg-7, even though several thousand people requested it in forums. But live composite is great 😊 be sure to play on new year 😊
Does anyone know what SD cards it likes. I've misplaced the one that it worked with and now it stays on the red LED when power on but without the sd card works fine enough
I'd keep the card under 2gb. These old cameras can't seem to work with bigger card sizes.
Fantastic- after much procrastination, watching this video has made me purchase a TG-7 today 👍🏻
@@robertsmithshair4199 Enjoy your new camera.
Some great images there Andrew. I think my fave was the one of the blue lady you used in your thumbnail - nice depth of field and the colours are really nice. I've got to make the next one!
Cheers, Robert. It's a great event. I think the next event is in April next year.
It's more an action camera for when jumping off a boat or scaling a tree that could sit along side the OM-1 in a travel kit.
It's certainly a handy camera when travelling light.
You should show it practically. People can't easily understand the theory.
I probably could do that if I had more equipment. I reckon I'd need several cameras, tripods, wireless mics, and a model willing to take part. Sadly, I'm just a small channel without many resources. I don't have sponsorship or any donations from all the folks watching these free videos. Thanks.
Some serious dressing up and make-up skills on display. Some terrific characters. Good stuff Andy.
Thanks for watching Dennis. It's quite a spectacle. Great for photographers.
Hi sir, so gratefull for your video. I am a beginner and have a question, if i use a filter on lumix fz82, can i zoom? For the hood lens is the same? Thanks sir.
Simon, yes, you can still zoom with the filters and lens hood attached. The filters and hood attach to the lens itself rather than the lens barrel.
@AndrewWaltonPhotography thanks you so much Andrew, have a nice day😁
You think that you would get a free roll of film with this camera kit
It would be handy. To be honest, mine lives on the shelf, it was fun to build but suffers from too many issues to use as a competent camera.
Hello Andrew. Nice pictures. I misunderstood someting. When i select scn15 i cannot change the aperture which is 8 whatever focal lenght. How do you manage that?
Hi Albert, if you use a shorter shutter speed, for example, 15 seconds as opposed to 60, the camera will compensate to let more light in and use a larger aperture, for example, f5.6 . Unfortunately, because the scene mode is a semi-automatic mode, we don't have complete control of the camera.
@@AndrewWaltonPhotography tks for the answer. I understand the principle but in scn15 I have no control on the aperture. if iselect a shutter speed of 15 ' it stay with aperture 8 and on all other modes i can choose aperture bt am limited to 4'
@albertlaurans2153 Sadly, it is an automatic mode, so the camera will choose the aperture based upon the amount of available light.
Why when I try to connect to the Wifi of the Lumix, it needs a password..?
@OHS-74 If you go into your settings, go to the blue spanner, select wifi (on page 1 of 5). Then select WiFi Set up, select WiFi password and change it to off.
Really great video 🙂👍💧
Thank you 😊 Thanks for watching and leaving a comment.
@AndrewWaltonPhotography 👍🙂
Super shots of great characters. I worry about the health of some of those people as they looked a bit peaky. Keith
Ha ha, yes, Keith, a little pale. It's a great event for photographers and a very popular one with them too. Cheers for watching.
Really enjoyed this video of images and the video from a few days ago. JoAnna and I really enjoyed our day in Whitby on our last visit and even discussed returning during GothFest someday. She really enjoyed seeing what it was all about in your video! A little too crowded for me but I'd be up at the abbey and cemetery taking photos again 😂 Great videos Andrew, really enjoyed these ones! Hope you are doing well!
@paulcookphotography It's a great event, Paul. Next year's dates are already out. Book accommodation early, though, as it is very popular. I'm looking forward to the Krampus Run, which is on in December.
Unfortunately it won't be next year, lots of expenses coming with our youngest son in Florida graduating university, but hopefully the year after!
Very atmospheric opening footage and some stunning shots, that I would imagine the subject would be over the moon with. By far, the best photos I have seen from the Goth festival and I have seen hundreds on FB, cheers Alan
Thanks, Alan. I'll be sharing them on Facebook later in the week, I'm hoping they might watch the video first 😉.
nice one mate, was down there for Steam Punk a couple of years ago
Thanks, Paul. I might pop down to Whitby for next year's Steampunk event. Weather permitting, I might give the Krampus Run a look this year, too. Whitby does have some great events.
@@AndrewWaltonPhotography I didn't realise they had a Goth weekend, its a 7 hour drive for me but worth it

Thanks for watching and commenting. Much appreciated 👏
Indeed, not all goths in that crew. Seems to be quite an amazing array! And Andy, you fit right in too! LOL Sorry, Andy, but I do hope that you know me and am just looking for a little chuckle. You know, and that is really what these events are all about I feel, people wanted to get out and just have a good time with those like-minded, enjoying one another's company and having some laughs along the way. Take good care, and have yourself a great week! And, I'll be expecting you to be working on your costume for next year's event! LOL
Cheers, Bruce. This event started off 30 years ago as a get-together in a pub. Now it's a huge international event. As for dressing up, I did make an effort with some black attire, but I prefer to be behind the camera.
Looks like a well attended event that , some great portraits mate, really like them !
Cheers, Lee, it's an excellent event for photographers. There were nearly as many togs as Goths 😀
Nice work
Cheers 🍻, thanks for watching.
Amazing how accommodating people are to having their photo taken when all dressed up All my street photography is candid with the exception of one young lady who accepted an invite from me to have her photo taken. Some great images Andy and just whet my appetite for another street photography vlog!
Thanks for watching, Andrew. Yes, although it's a while since I've done much street. Normally, I'd shoot candidly, but it's kind of etiquette at Whitby that you ask if it's OK to take photos.
Top job that Andy. Brilliant photos mate. You really captured the essence of the festival. Great stuff. 👌🏻
Thanks, Watto. As you know from experience it's a busy weekend and it wasn't the easiest place to photograph people.
👍9, that’s a great filter for Whitby and another great thumbnail! Some cracking shots in there, the Nikon performing nicely. Great pictures from a fantastic day!
@GENerationXplorers Thanks guys, the D3300 was an entry-level dslr, and it was pretty good in its day, but now a decade old. I was pretty happy with the images I got. It's not the easiest place to photograph people because of the crowds.
Some cracking makeup on display in that bunch - was the shot at 3:51 an actual person or a model - if a person then wow! Nice collection mate, I saw a few images from Whitby pop up over the weekend on socials, wondered whether you might have been there with camera in tow.
Thanks for watching Dave, I think that was a very good mask the chap was wearing. I think there may have been nearly as many photographers as Goths.
Wow. Some fantastic costumes. I would say it’s a great wee buzz around the town when this is on.
@paulkennedycreativemedia It's a busy weekend for sure, Paul. I did a video for my other channel where you can see how huge the event is. Thanks for watching 🙂.
@ I’ll check it out
@paulkennedycreativemedia cheers fella 👍
I bought one for the zoom. For macro my budget smartphone does great. I use both for iNaturalist.
@@OspreyFlyer they are very handy being able to reach where a smartphone can't.

That was fantastic Andy you got some Brilliant photos. I recognise a few of them from the weekend 😊
@yasminshikingmission Thanks Yasmin, it was a great event for photographers.
Ooh that music was super dramatic. Lots of wonderful costumes. Great photos 📸 👍🧸🐻
@twobearsontour Thanks, Ellie. It's a great event. You should get along to one. Whitby is always worth a visit.
how do they compare at night?
The Samsung S22 has a good night mode, which takes nice but not perfect images at the wide end, but the zoom still can't match the camera. The camera also has night modes, a handheld night shot, which is OK but again not perfect, and an excellent Artistic Nightscape mode where you can take long exposure images of up to 60 seconds but the camera needs to be on a tripod. I've covered both these features in separate videos. Sadly, the S22 doesn't have a long exposure feature that was available on the much more expensive top of the range model.
Great idea for a Halloween video Andrew. Once again you've proved it's not about the camera, but the photographer. My faves were 7:35 and 8:14. 👌
@Robert-Bishop Thanks, Robert. Not one of my most popular videos, but I had fun making it, and the images came out better than expected. Cheers for watching.
Hi Andrew! I enjoyed your video! I liked your photography assignment of numerical photographs. Best Duane
Thanks Duane, my walking route is somewhere I've photographed before so I thought I'd challenge myself to something different.
@@AndrewWaltonPhotography I think that is always a good photography assignment for all photographers to choose a specific subject to photograph. I liked your selection of numerical that I'm going to try it. Best Duane
@@duanemcclun9924 enjoy the challenge!
Nice little project and nice images as a result 4:02 i think was my fav , made me stop and think Whats that ?
@LeePelling Cheers Lee, yeah, it was a drain cover. I just thought I try a theme in a video for a change.
Great work Andy - and well done to Watto for giving his dad's camera a deserved new lease of life. I still have a CCD compact, an Olympus, and it has the same zoom range of this one. I actually prefer to use primes rather than zooms these days though. This looked a lovely and still worthwhile pocketable camera. I can't get on with using a mobile phone for photography - tactile experience is rubbish, and I like the experience of using a piece of tech that doesn't bombard you with notifications. I like to always have a small camera with me at all times. My favourite photo on this great photo project - the number '3' sliced through at 2:59 by the blue shipping container - but you had some really worthy shots there overall. Super work! Take care, Paul
@westcountrywanderings Thanks, Paul. It was very generous of Paul to think of me and send me the cameras. Both primes and zooms have their place. I photographed Whitby Goth Weekend on Saturday. The shots I got with my 50 mm prime were probably my favourite, but sometimes it was far too long for the crowds, so the 10-20 mm wide angle and even the 18-55 mm kit lens came in handy. As for compact point and shoots, I find them quite liberating to concentrate purely on the composition. They can put the fun back into photography. Phones, like yourself, I find them a bit of a sterile experience and much prefer a dedicated camera. Thanks for watching.
