TIME TO DITCH your SMARTPHONE for a CAMERA? Affordable CAMERAS can still WIN!
TIME TO DITCH your SMARTPHONE for a CAMERA? Affordable CAMERAS can still WIN!
Nobody buys affordable cameras anymore - at least that is what we're lead to believe. With all of the Ai in phones today there is thankfully a albeit small resurgence in traditional cameras. Phones are still compromised by their pocket size requirements, extreme zooms are digital only with 'help' from Ai to improve those compromised images. Cameras on the other hand whilst lacking the 'brain power' of a smartphone have no restrictions to physical size. Therefore this video hopes to demonstrate what people are missing out on by just using a phone for photography.

    Thanks for your thoughts. It's quite versatile and good to have with you in certain situations. I find there are a lot people that criticise products without bothering to learn how to use them properly in the first place. I bought the TG-6 for taking under water pics and at the beach or hikes when I don't feel like taking a bigger camera with me. It's also much better ergonomically than any smartphone. If you use the macro flash attachment or the flash diffuser you will get good results in any light conditions.

      @martinhommel9967 Thanks, Martin. I still prefer a 'real camera' to a phone too. I like the rugged nature of the TG-6, although I've not tried mine underwater yet. I do have the LED light for macro shots, which is great.

      Yes, the Samsung Galaxy Camera, I've been after one to feature on the channel for some time. Sadly, they still command decent money despite being as much use as a chocolate fireguard these days due to running android jellybean, and apps can't be updated. Got to agree with you Andy 👍🏻 well put - how many of the phone images will never see the light of day again (altho I’ve a few on the hard drives !) I’ve taken some great shots on my phone when viewed on the phone and even some I’ve had printed but I love my Nikon and will always use it for serious photography. That said I’ve just returned from 3 weeks in the van and was out with Mrs Andrew Hamilton Photography and we had a stunning sunset and I only had my phone ! Typical ! Good debate 👍🏻

    • @AndrewWaltonPhotography

      Thanks for watching Andrew. I have fallen foul a few times of only having a phone with me when the sunset has been perfect for a photo. Any instance where any type of telephoto work is required and the argument for a camera over a phone is a no-brainer. Well, for now, anyway, phones are getting better all the time, but for the moment, even a modest camera can outdo them.

    Hi Andrew, Nice tutorial as always, and super photographs. I don't know if you knew that you can get 9782 mm by turning izoom on. However It is digital zoom but may save on getting a lens converter. I have tried it and it does increase the zoom. Maybe not as effective as a extention lens. Thanks again

    • @AndrewWaltonPhotography
      @AndrewWaltonPhotography 11 дней назад

      @MichaelLyne-rf1hf The problem with the izoom is that you are cropping in onto the sensor, and the image quality is much poorer. I'm definitely in the optical zoom camp, rather than the digital zoom. I did do a short how to use the optical/digital zoom video. To get to 9782mm I think you have to drop the image resolution too. ruclips.net/user/shortsuAwSK9U6rlY?feature=share

    I have the FZ82's older brother the FZ72 and have no intention of getting rid, compared with my Pixel 8 (which is one of best image snappers) it's no contest for a quick photo but for a zoom there isn't a phone that can get the same clarity. You made me laugh when you said cheap camera's from China...you do realise that all camera's are made in China, even the high end gear the internals are made over there (every chip, sensor, motherboard etc etc). Anyway I'm keeping mine along with it's 1.7 teleconvertor (which apparently is worth more than the camera itself so I've been told by people that want to buy it).

    • @AndrewWaltonPhotography
      @AndrewWaltonPhotography 11 дней назад

      Yes, indeed, everything is made in China these days. It depends on how much 'supervision' they are given regarding quality control. However, most domestic products are churned out in volume and aren't up to the same standards. The 1.7x teleconvertor is indeed very desirable - I have been on the lookout for a cheap used one, but it seems they don't exist.

    • @polisheverything1970

      @@AndrewWaltonPhotography I'll be honest I got a bargain with mine, I was saving up for the FZ82 and on Gumtree a seller was going to do me a deal for the FZ82 for £150 but changed her mind, there was another seller that had the FZ72 with 2 spare batteries, case, tripod the 1.7 tele (official one) with the lens adaptor all for £130. Needless to say it was worth losing a few functions for that bargain. I noticed as well that camera companies have abandoned with a passion anything to do with bridge cameras which is a shame because the potential is massive especially if they started putting larger sensors in but that seemed to cap out with the 1" sensor on the FZ2500,1000 & 1000II. The only other thing I wished I had was the focus stacking but I tend to do that on the computer anyway. I don't know if you know though Panasonic released an updated version of the FZ82 last month (FZ82D) but comparing the specs it certainly doesn't seem worth it when the changes aren't significant enough to warrant the release. All the best from here in Yorkshire.

That centre moulding where the pole slides in and out - Is that metal or plastic? - I've seen other tripods where this part has flexed, something that would put me off! I much prefer the two part extending legs,I'm pretty sure that must help with stability!

The s24 ultra is definitely an upgrade to my s22 (the peasant spec version), and I can't manage to take the same type of photos I can with my cameras. It is impressive at regular focal lengths but the zoom is barely a zoom at all. Maybe I've been spoiled with these Lumix cameras. Absolutely spot-on Andrew. As you know, I shoot film and occasional digital. The only time my phone shoots better is in low light interiors. I just can't match the phone shots with a camera, probably due to some excellent processing in-phone, but once outside in the natural light there is no comparison. I liked the "Toon-Army" horse a lot. Keith

      @AndrewWaltonPhotography 21 день назад

      @theoldunsshot1005 modern phones are great at stills in low light situations and on paper they shouldn't be, small sensor, limited lenses etc. What I have found is my Samsung is terrible at video in low light. Perhaps the jiggery-pokery that they do can't be applied to video. Lack of optical zoom is the other Achilies' heel, as discussed here. I'd love to move up to a full frame mirrorless camera as the one at work can practically see in the dark.

    I concur with your comments my friend. A great set of images. And honestly who could not love the donkey at 4:38, but where's Shrek! My favourite was definitely the Zebra at 6:25 which shows how good black and white photography can be in the right hands.

      Thanks, Dennis. Zebras are always great subjects for photography, portraits of individuals, abstracts of their unique patterns or a huge herd all make for compelling images. Donkeys are such great animals, sadly taken advantage of by man. Such a shame so many end up neglected.

    Well, I don't even own a phone, so its always a camera for me. But, I find that many things are needing me to go to their app! So, I think I'll soon find myself in the market. I find too that many wave their phones around so much at anything, while those with a camera see something, stop a second, and click! lol

      Thanks for watching Bruce. I'm not sure how I'd manage without a phone. Most of my B roll is filmed on my phone for both channels. I do also have a Canon v10, but that can't shoot 4k for a long time before it overheats. I do agree, there is much more consideration when purposefully taking a photo with a camera than a phone. Film photography even more so than with digital.

    You're spot on in your assesment and I completely agree. For 90% (random number generator!) of the population though, a modern smartphone will be the most spohisticated camera they've ever laid their hands on. Most will never look at their images anywhere other than on their phone screens, so what's the motivation to invest in a dedicated camera, nil to very little I guess. Good vid mate, I'd vaguley heard about that Samsung controversy but never knew that's what it was all about.

      Yep for most folk with no interest in photography, just snaps they're fine but I guess that they must at some point be disappointed with the phone or just not aware that better is possible. My Mrs loves to show me her 'great shots' of wildlife - they're usually heavy on the digital zoom and all misshapen and soft. I guess pro photographers with professional kit probably view my photos in the same way 😄

    • @AndrewWaltonPhotography
      @AndrewWaltonPhotography 19 дней назад

      @andygore1149 Indeed Andy. There are masses of photographers using smartphones. There are limitations with them like there are with other cameras. If you don't reach those limitations, then it is never a problem. There are limitations with the Lumix cameras I currently use. If I want to do some more serious landscape photography, then I even dust off my Nikon D3300, but most decent landscape photographers wouldn't entertain using one. I haven't reached the point where that camera is holding me back, so there isn't much point in upgrading it as much as I'd like a Z7ii.

    Great topic to cover..I hope it encourages some to get to grips with a proper camera. An optical zoom can’t be beaten in comparison to a smart phone digital version. Enjoyed your images taken with the FZ82, that focal reach is really helpful for taking distant wildlife.

    If it is the same lens and sensor the development cost would have been much lower I suppose, but it may affect whether many users will upgrade to the "D". My first digital camera, a Nikon Coolpix 3.1MP compact, cost me over £300 in the mid noughties! Good info. Keith

    • @AndrewWaltonPhotography
      @AndrewWaltonPhotography 28 дней назад

      Thanks Keith, yes the majority of the camera remains the same, so for the vast number of current owners, it probably isn't worth the upgrade. However, Panasonic were clever in that they didn't launch the new camera whilst existing stocks of FZ82 models were about. Older digital cameras were pretty expensive at the time, certainly the technology got very cheap in the late 2010s but as phones have taken over the prices of cameras seem to be on the rise again. I guess development costs need to be recovered, and if your market is smaller, the unit cost has to increase to make it viable.

    I'm currently looking for a solid everyday camera and insanely this camera is £50+ second hand now, what the hell is happening to the world?! A bit late perhaps for added input but it would have been nice to see some examples of how the camera handles chromatic aberration and its handling of high contrast pictures (eg; natural scenery with bright sky). It would also be good to know what options the camera has such as does it have a manual mode to set things like exposure and ISO yourself.

      I wish I'd kept it if they were worth those sums. It's a long time since I owned this particular camera. Does the camera have an option to format the card. If so, try that. If the camera is still saying it is protected try unlocking/locking the tab on the side of the card. Sometimes, they don't move enough. If you have another SD card, try that as there may be a fault with the camera itself.
