Both Carrie and Kelly are 2 of the most talented vocalists of a generation. They are both comfortable taking on music that's well out of their perspective wheel houses and do it with grace and it's effortless. Both possess awesome vocal ranges and are powerhouse vocalists. Kelly's music does tend to hit closer to the soul but that's because Kelly writes most of her own music while Carrie collaborates with writing her music. It's said that song writers write from their own life experiences and Kelly surely does do that. Kelly's music reflects a not so perfect life that's full of hurt, disappointment, sadness, and cuts to the soul. "Piece by Piece", "I Don't Think About You", "Already Gone", "Me", "Mine" all reflect on the reality of her life. Carrie is a small town Oklahoma girl from Checotah who had a wonderful life and didn't suffer the reality of a hard life as Kelly did. Carrie's music reflects the wholesome, spiritual, and humbleness of her life. "See You Again", "Temporary Home","Mama's Song", "Something in the Water" reflect Carrie's life. Kelly's best vocal, to me, is "I Don't Think About You" because the lyric, the music, and the vocal are phenomenal and effortlessly come together. Carrie's best vocal is her live performance of "How Great Thou Art" on the 2011 CBS Special Superstar Women of Country. That night, Carrie delivered a stellar vocal performance and through that performance there wasn't a doubt that she'd arrived and solidified her place in country music.

I think they both have great voices! But it's hard to deny Kelly can do many more genres. Judges were prescient on Idol when they said Carrie needed to show she could do more than country - then in her career afterwards, pretty much all she did was country. (No disrespect - she does have the most Grammy awards of any American Idol winner!.)
