Sewing my Perfect Skirt, and One with a Cottagecore Twist
So today I am sharing the techniques I use to make my perfect skirts, especially for me, a plus size lady. This includes adding elastic to the waist, stablizing the waistband with ban-roll, and adding a cottagecore style bias bound hem.
I made two variations; the first is a basic cotton twill version with my own slash pocket pattern. The next is cottagecore all the way in a spakly linen blend, decorative diamond pockets, and some more funtional inseam ones. Let me know which was your favourite, and if any of these techniques were helpful!
Check out my new pocket pattern!

How to Do a Full Bust Adjustment (and When and Why) #shirtwaistseptember

Today I am talking about how to do a full bust adjustment (or FBA as it is commonly called) why you should do one, and when you should do one. It came about because I am working on my shirtdress for #shirtwaistseptember , and I needed to do a full bust adjustment for myself, and I realized it is one of the main reasons that prevents people from getting a good fit. I have been planning on making...

Such a great, informative video!
Thank you! ❤️
Great skirts. And your pocket pattern is great. I'm just curious as to whether wear petticoats under your skirts, especially with winter coming. As someone who wears skirts or dresses all the time, I can attest to the fact that they help keep my legs warmer in the winter here in western New York State. Though I usually don't wear tights. I don't like the way they feel on my legs.
I do usually wear tights or leggings, sometimes even with thigh high socks over top if its really cold. Its worth a shot giving petticoats a go; I'm not a huge fan of the way the tights feel either. The skirts might need to be a bit longer in that case. I am so glad to hear you are enjoying the pocket pattern!

Cute outfits!! Can't wait until fall weather hits Texas!
It still hasnt? Wow. Thank you!
I’m Canadian too living close to border in Ontario So nice to see someone from Canada sewing clothes on you tube. Great video and wonderful and complete camera work❤❤❤
Thank you so much!
I made a quick and dirty seam gauge on my machine with permanent marker. 😅 I have an old, beat up Husqvarna Automatic which has probably lived most of its life in a school, the paint is all scrathed up with peoples names and such. The poor machine doesn't have a seam gauge, so I just used a permanent marker to make short lines where I needed. Probably wouldn't do that on a "prettier" machine.
Yeah this one is so pretty it makes me nervous!
❤❤❤
Looks great!
Thank you! ❤️
I bought your pocket pattern to put into the Charm Society dress so I’ve been using the inseam version as that’s all I knew how to do. But the slash pocket version looks so easy! I can’t wait to try that version, thank you for demoing it!
Let me know how it goes! I am so glad to hear you are getting some use out of them!
Ashley, you are lovely and I love your videos! You enthusiasm and charm is contagious. You give my sew-jo back to me! Thank you!!
Im so glad to hear that! Thank you! ❤️
I love the green skirt with the tan boots!
Thank you!
Hi Ashley, Lovely skirt❣️❣️ Albertan here and I’m just getting back into sewing after many years.. I’ve never really sewn much for clothing, I sewed mostly upholstery like projects , but I am now venturing back into clothing.. Patterns and fit are a nightmare on this old 59 yo two different plus sized body areas…😂😂 If that made any sense! Hoping to make a circle skirt soon! Any advice on patterns, material, etc would help welcomed! I’m also hoping to upgrade my sewing machine in the near future and was wondering what best brand and type of machine I could get for a budget of around 5 or 600$ and good for a beginner to moderate level sewer? Sorry for all the questions…😬😬
Pretty much anything works for a circle skirt, and that's a great place to start. Charm patterns has a free circle skirt pattern that I would highly recommend. it goes up into quite large sizes and includes detailed instructions. As far as a machine goes, I would recommend having a look on marketplace for a used one. For that price point, the machine is mostly going to have plastic components which are not very forgiving to making mistakes. An older kenmore or something that you can break a needle on without fear would be my recommendation.
Love this video! Both skirts are awesome! Love the decorative pockets!❤
Thank you so much!!
❤ both skirts!
🥰😍❤ You look amazing!!!
Enjoying your sewing room tour......can you explain to me the small tv looking screen you said you watch RUclips and other videos etc......how does it work??? Is it hooked to WiFi or TV service like direct TV or just your computer WiFi ???? Thank you
Just wifi. It's a Windows Surface, which is basically a more computer like tablet.
The algorithm just served up your channel to me, and I'm thrilled. Your explanations are so clear and practical! I really want to learn garment making but am very intimidated, and not being a "standard " size isn't helping. Thank you for giving yourself and your knowledge!!
Welcome! And thank you so much! Not to sound like an ad, but the other Cashmerette book, Sewing the Curve is great for getting started with a non-standard shape, cup sizes are already done for you which might give you a head start. They have it at most libraries too now.
How would you find the cup size of your pattern if there is no measuring chart. I'm working with some random blocks and can't find the measuring chart.
The easiest is to reach out to the pattern maker. You can try reverse engineering it, basically by taking the darts out and measuring the gap or comparing the darts to a pattern you have. Often, I find if it is not listed, it is usually a B cup. If the darts are on the small side that would probably be my guess
Love this, Thank you! I was just given one of these from the original owner! She is 81 and got it when she was 18 as a graduation gift. It is lovely, has the original table, and has a little accessories kit. She loved it well and so will I! Once I learn more about it 😆
How can I get this patten
You would need to contact Stephanie Canada and see
If you stand the tape measure up it will go around the curve better.
Thanks for the review! I have been sewing for more than 20 years, so I don't really need a beginner's book, but then, I've yet to find a sewing book that does NOT offer at least some tiny trick that I did not know before 😁 Also, I love Cashmerette so much! I wear a G cup and only a few years ago really started altering patterns - I had done FBAs before but it seems that I added way too few width and length so patterns still did not fit me. With Cashmerette patterns, I first saw how patterns for my shape _should_ look like. Seam allowances are not standardised over the world. For me as a German, US-American seam allowances are _so huge_! Classic German patterns don't have any seam allowance included and that's what I prefer because everyone can add the seam allowance that they want and it's so much easier to do alterations and merge different patterns. I just merged a Cashmerette pattern with another pattern with a different seam allowance included and that was so much more work than using a pattern without any included seam allowance.
Great video
Thanks!
Very Pretty! I actually learned a few tricks/tips from you! It was neat seeing you scroll the website (My twin boy is modeling the gold dragon wings)! He was so little then! I have adored T&T for many, many years (and have sewn a ton of their patterns including the epic dragon wings). I used to share with the Inspiration team too. Would love to see you sew more of their patterns! I took a 2yr long break after my mom passed away and I'm just coming back to sewing. New Sub!
Thank you for subscribing! That is definitely the plan, I just got the driftwood printed off and ready to go!
@@ashleymainmakes Nice! I've made the Driftwood for both my girl's when they were little, but not the adult. I'll be watching!
Looks great. 😊 Where did you get your stretch linen?
Fabricmart! I think it was deadstock, so its no longer available, but that was my favourite fabric shop when I was in the US
I made the dragon wings...super pattern company!!!
Im so glad to hear that!
💜💜💜💜
Thank you so much for this! I'm a plus size gal just learning to sew because I'm sick of nothing fitting me right. I've come to believe that I will likely have to make some of my own patterns because I'm having a hard time finding patterns in my measurements. This is going to be so useful for any adjustments I need to do 💖💖💖 I may even try looking for a pattern I like and adjusting it 😊
Thats probably a good plan! I do recommend starting with patterns in your size if you are a beginner. I feature lots of plus size companies on my channel. Cashmerette has a great plus size beginners book that I would highly recommend.
@@ashleymainmakes thank you 💖 I'll have to take a look at those patterns 😊
After seeing you in your red dress I had to subscribe at once. Wonderful. And I bought the Deckert book. Now I wish you could send a link for your weird but wonderfully weird rotary cutter. Starting binge watching your last videos now and looking forward to your next videos. Love from Germany.
Thank you so much! I appreciate the subscription too! I wish I could send ypu a link for that too, its wireless electric scissors called Pink Power, but they dont really sell online I dont think. I bought them in the states.
@@ashleymainmakes and I appreciate the hard work you've put into your videos. Thanks
Yes, that adjustment to the neckline is spot on for you! You definitely look more comfortable in the 2nd version and the twirl factor is 100%☺💖🧵🪡✂
Yes! Thank you!
Thank you so much for the sewing inspiration. I have picked up your pockets it will save me so much time. I used your Rita blouse hack to make a Dalmatians dress for Disneyland. It felt amazing.
Thats so cool! I am so glad to hear that! And thank you for picking up that pockets, I really hope you like them.
Beautiful dress, and great fit! ❤
Thank you! 😊
You are so pretty, Ashley. That red is stunning. The fit is cute af too. You've always made me feel like I can wear whatever tf I want as a fat lady. thanks 💜
Aww thank you! ❤️❤️ that warms my heart to hear that. That is always my goal.
OMG, you have just solved 90% of my fit issues with all of the tops that I have ever made or bought. Subscribed.
I'm so glad! Thank you for subscribing! ❤️
Stunning
That dress does look great on you, and the bodice fits perfectly.

Yes it was! Thank you for coming over and watching! ❤️
Such a lovely dress and great color for you! I haven't been able to keep up so I'm looking forward to binging this weekend!
Amazing! I would really appreciate it! ❤️
Very pretty I ❤the finished result.
Thank you! 😊
Sleeve "cap".
Well, now I want a red shirt dress! 😂 That is beautiful and you look fabulous in it. Love it! I appreciate seeing how you adjusted the pattern, in these two videos. That is where I overthink things and get bogged down, at times. Seeing others work confidently through each step inspires me to believe I'll get there with more experience. Thanks for taking the time to share. 😊--Deborah
You will for sure! And like I say, it will still fit you better than something from the store. I do like using the muslin fabric, because then if I am wrong... oh well! Thank you so much for watching!
Found this on my feed and INSTANTLY subbed because *thank goodness* there’s a plus size sewer that’s ACTUALLY plus sized! Loved that you have a FBA video, thank you thank you THANK YOU❤❤❤❤❤
Im so glad to hear the videos were helpful! Thank you for subscribing! ❤️
Wow - stunning!
Thank you! Cheers!
This is so good! Thank you!
Thank you! ❤️
