    Thank you Denise! I really loved watching your process throughout this video. I am new to painting and I am really struggling with trying to free myself from rigidity and perfectionism. The concept of "playing" (versus producing something great) is new to me. Thank you for inspiring me to take more risks and to play with painting.

    When I do still life, I tend to work relatively small and put my drawing board or canvas on my lap, leaning on the table holds the still life for the initial drawing, and then work flat when I paint. I do, however primarily paint with watercolor. I tend to use a deeper table and fewer subjects per picture.

      Welcome Amanda, Thank you. ... there may be other videos with the background - try the previous vlog no 40? ... but it's just using a Sennellier ink...(which is apparently not as permanent as I thought... ) and maybe some fluid paint and making a swirly, playful mess on the board... and see what happens next. Use tools to spread the paint... use your fingers... I'm not doing 'tutorial' videos as such at this stage... merely sharing my work. Absolutely. Whether a professional artist or not, it is the same for many. Part of it, is the wrong way we feel towards art practice, that the end result is the thing, it's actually the journey, the learning, the mistakes that breed creativity, no rules, no restraints. Some like me, find an inner critic that just goes into overdrive when we are loose and playful, but those are the times I feel the flow of creativity, and produce the work I love the most, once ive faced my inner critic of course 😅. People create art in many different ways, some people's art practice just wouldn't work for me, I need freedom, and if my inner critic has his way, he will stop that flow. It's an ongoing battle within myself I've always had, but I recognise that and have learned some tools to overcome it sometimes.

    Such a beautifully gentle and interesting video to watch Denise. With added synchronicity that I have been studying Internal Family Systems over the past few months through courses with Lissa Rankin, some of which have included the participation and live student demonstrations with Frank Anderson and Dick Schwartz himself. I am in the middle of developing a collection of paintings (which may also become an Oracle deck at some point) on Healing the Heart and I am currently doing an IFS course with Lissa on that subject. So everything fits together and I was so fascinated that you are interested and exploring this way of understanding the self an artist as well. I also relate to the tension between creating art straight from the heart and making art to sell. Although as a trained Intentional Creativity teacher, like yourself, I still feel that the two are more closely interwoven than we often allow ourselves to believe. I am also still pondering the Patreon dilemma but have decided, for now, to rent a small studio space in the nearby town and start off by teaching expressive art and writing with oracle cards to small groups in person. I have had a lot of positive response so far and I am hoping that the energy from this endeavour will guide me as to how I might proceed in the best way online. I'm loving your RUclips videos and grateful for all that you share and all that you are, naturally, as yourself.

'no separation' Good on you, renting a studio space locally... that sounds exciting... and in person classes are the bee's knee's if people can get along to those, very generous of you to create that opportunity, I hope it goes really really well for you. thanks for sharing/connecting, it means a lot. best, Denise xx

    Playing is powerful, you should do more of it. Playing brings ideas and nourishment to yourself and carries through into your work and life. It is never a waste of time to indulge in yourself each day, it is never a selfish thing because you are worth it.

    Denise, will you tell us about your frames? Do you build them ? Purchase from ? I can’t find any wholesale and all seem so expensive. Your paintings all look magnificent with or without the frames but the frames really are a cherry on top. Thank you for sharing your work with us

    • @DeniseDaffara
      @DeniseDaffara 24 дня назад

      Hi Kym, These frames are made from oak I believe... in Australia, responsibly sourced I am assured - and made by a professional framer. I think in the last few years framing has become more expensive... actually it's concerning... as we need our trees alive more than surrounding our art if I'm honest... so it's definitely helpful when plantation timber is used, a BIG TIP i can give you... seek out the package of frame + canvas/board ALREADY DONE... the difference in pricing from 'taking art to the framers' and buying the surface already framed is HUGE... I'm not sure why... except for 'economy of scale' in their production?? I'm in Australia... there are a few companies starting to make this kind of 'package deal' available.. but for sure.. if you can find a wholesale option that could be good for you. Speak to your local framers and tell them what you'd like... 'the pale coloured wood, float frame' is very popular in Australia for the last several years actually... not sure how long that will last... what I like about it compared to black or white or painted frames... if you get a little paint on it, you can usually give it a light sand and it's good as new.... whereas, painted ones.. if scratched.. are all but ruined. I don't have the equipment or the patience to make my own frames. If you'd like the name of the framer I used... shoot me an email, or via my website www.denisedaffara.com.au xo

    just love all your videos Denise! can u tell me do u use acrylic gouache or soft,or r hard body etc.. are they very different? i'm not crazy about hard body..also do u use a medium to thin them out? thanks!

    • @DeniseDaffara
      @DeniseDaffara 24 дня назад

      Hi Deborah, welcome I use a bunch of different paints depending on the effect I want, but mostly... soft/flow type ones are good for coverage.. gouache is great for a matte look ... I used to use a lot of heavy body.. that is great if you want texture, say if you want to use a palette knife and have thicker paint laid on. ... I don't generally use mediums to thin things out... I start with the kind of paint and texture I want. (I will admit... I have FAR too many options, and I really admire the artists who stick mostly with the primaries and mix all their own colours... when I grow up, I might do that more ha!) .. thanks for connecting... and you've given me a good question to cover in a future video... warm wishes, Denise x

      HI Deborah... the 'finding the painting' in the background is just one of the ways I really love painting, I've been painting for a long time... 24+ years.. so... I've tried many ways of making a painting... and this is just one of the ones I return to as I enjoy the spontaneity of marks it gives me. If you watch more of my videos you might see the technique repeated... it's all about finding the ways You LOVE to make a painting.. and expanding on those.. I'm a life long learner.. so I enjoy having a variety of options to choose from. I'm considering creating some online courses in due course. warmest wishes Denise

    The framing really is the icing on the art cake. I have a couple of questions: I noticed that you don't sign your work, I'd be interested to know why you choose to not do it? Secondly, do you varnish your paintings? and the reason why yes or no? I enjoyed watching the sketchbook spread.

    • @DeniseDaffara
      @DeniseDaffara 26 дней назад

      Hi Blue Wren, I agree... re framing. I doooo sign my work, most often I sgraffito carve it into wet paint at the lower right hand corner.. it can be very subtle and 'quiet' depending on under layer of paint or sometimes I might use a sharp pencil or fine black pen... I do believe in signing my work.. but I quite dislike it when a signature is too 'loud' Varnish : yes, I'm keen on water based satin varnish for the last few years... I had a 'gloss period' .. but now I like the in between... 'Liquitex Satin Varnish'. I've just bought a can of spray satin varnish... and fixative also... so I may use that in some future pieces if there is a lot of loose medium on them like neo colour II crayons and water colour pencils. thanks for connecting, Denise x

      @@DeniseDaffara Ah, I can see the signature now. On the video it is most visible on the painting with the two ladies (bottom left). I hope you didn't think that my comment re signing was judgey, as it wasn't meant to be. A lot of artists choose not to sign their work on the front and I think that decision is a personal one. I really am just intrigued as to why people make the choices they make and it makes me examine why I do the things I do. I agree with you that subtle is the way to go with signatures. I think gloss varnish works really well in paintings where there is a lot of transparency as it can add depth and really glow up those transparent layers, but I agree with opaque paintings like the framed ones it can make them look a bit "plasticky" with acrylic. Satin is a nice balance. I really love the matte look of gouache, but I think it has an inherent luminosity that acrylic with a matte varnish doesn't really have. Then again, there are instances where a really matte look is just what's needed. Different work needs different approaches - it's what keeps us artists on our toes and makes the whole thing fun.
