Leading Canadian goal scorer not going and the Vezina runner up not going either....brutal 😮
This trade wouldn’t even go down in nhl 25… no way it’d happen on either side
Source trust me bro
Kings had a playoff drought back in the 2000s, so that's why they could draft better and rebuild from the Robitaille/Blake/Norstrom era to the 2012/2014 cup guys
The thing about Gretzky is that he is the most intelligent hockey player that has ever played. If you had him shoot like 4th he probably would have watched what the Goaltender did on the first few shooters and used that to bear him. Gretzky wasn’t really fast, wasn’t the best stick handler, didnt have the best shot, wasnt the strongest. He was the smartest. And he always figured out a way to be successful.
1) Bettman became commissioner in 1993 by 1997 25% of all Canadian teams had been relocated to the United States - 8 Canadian teams - 2 relocated to America. 2) One of those teams (Arizona Coyotes) lost money for 28 years straight, they went bankrupt in 2008, they could not find an owner so the NHL stepped in and ran operations (something they would NEVER do for Quebec or Winnipeg), then the team got sued by the city of Phoenix twice, and the city of Glendale once, then the city of Tempe voted unanimously against having the team, and by 2024 the Arizona Coyotes stopped paying hotel bills... 3) Meanwhile...the Winnipeg Jets came back into the league in 2011 - from 2011 to 2024 the Winnipeg Jets - had better attendance than the Arizona Coyotes - generated more revenue than the Arizona Coyotes - had a higher franchise value than the Arizona Coyotes So why did they leave? They went to a worse market - and proceeded to lose money for almost 30 years. Why? 4) This is Gary Bettman's legacy, thirteen American teams BLEEDING MONEY...being propped up with Canadian markets... Between 2012-2021 thirteen American teams lost revenue for the league (in millions USD): - Florida (-195.9) - GARY BETTMAN EXPANSION TEAM - Arizona (-141.6) - GARY BETTMAN RELOCATION - NY Islanders (-132.1) - Carolina (-108.8) - GARY BETTMAN RELOCATION - Tampa (-74.4) - GARY BETTMAN EXPANSION TEAM - Buffalo (-59.9) - Anaheim (-79.6) - GARY BETTMAN EXPANSION TEAM - Columbus (-76.0) - GARY BETTMAN EXPANSION TEAM - San Jose (-13.3) - Nashville (-64.1) - GARY BETTMAN EXPANSION TEAM - Minnesota (-55.1) - GARY BETTMAN EXPANSION TEAM - St. Louis (-43.9) - Colorado (-23.5) - GARY BETTMAN RELOCATION FUN FACT: Between 2005-2010 the Atlanta Thrashers set the record for most money lost by any NHL team in history...$130 million in losses in 5 years. And Bettman wants to go back a THIRD TIME.... THAT IS HIS LEGACY....3 DISASTERS IN ATLANTA, ANOTHER DISASTER IN ARIZONA, AND 10 MORE EXPANSION TEAMS LOSING MONEY IN THE SOUTH. FUN FACT: Winnipeg Jets lost over $40 million USD during Covid, and still managed to generate profit for the league (which they had to share with dying American markets in the South). Winnipeg Jets (+$4.9 million profit) Florida Panthers (-$195.9 million losses) So Winnipeg (834,000 people) using Canadian currency generated $200.8 million USD more than Miami (6 million people) using American currency... That is staggering...Canada is SUCH A BETTER HOCKEY MARKET THAN AMERICA. FUN FACT: Quebec City (839,311) has more people than Winnipeg (834,678).
I agree with you on everything you’ve said bar one thing: Tampa Bay was already approved as an expansion team prior to the 1992-93 season (his first as executive) - not exactly Bettman’s expansion team. Sorry to nitpick, and I’m certainly not defending Bettman in any way - just wanted to point this out. Edit: sorry I missed another - Atlanta the first time was also not Bettman’s disaster, as it happened in the 1972-73 season, well before his time. It still failed and they moved to Calgary. The second time in 1999-2000, yep that’s all him. For him to try Atlanta a second time and for the NHL’s third overall, it probably isn’t going to go over well.
From a personal conversation with one of the coaches the summer after the Olympics: Many factors, some mentioned, went into the decision to not include Gretzky in the shootout: - Yes, they looked at the 3 times he competed at the shoot out competition at the All-Star games and he was not the best in each one... and he stopped competing completely after the first 3 - Even though there was limited data, they looked at his penalty shot success (or lack thereof) and had other players on the roster who were more successful - Most of his NHL goals were from playmaking, not by being a sharp shooter - And, what struck me the most, the coaching staff asked the Canadian goaltenders who they would NOT want to have shooting on them... not one mentioned Gretzky With 20/20 hindsight, if they had put him in and he did not score, this would be a moot discussion. The tough decision by the coaches was to NOT put him on the list and it will always be debatable whether their selections gave them the best chance... I don't think putting him in would have improved the odds by much, if at all...
Great vid! And you so nailed it when describing the old Soviet anthem.
I was at that game sitting in back of Gretzky. It was hard to watch!!
Warped distortions offer little value in viewing a 32 year history.
decent jerseys though, i guess the juniors had better memories associated with them
lots of guelph mercury quotes
The real reason it was the most embarassing Olympic failure was they didn't select Crosby. Completely different team if that happens.
Vancouver fans get over it. Go back to your moms basement
Did Justin Trudeau pick the goalies for team Canada?
Luongo never should've been in net while in Boston
Crosby has already won three cups. He just signed another extension with Pittsburg: for the same amount he has signed for since 2008. You do not reward that kind of loyalty by trading him. Dubas may be a horrible GM, but surely he could not do something so stupid.
Bettman was hell bent on undoing the dominance of the Red Wings, he finally did it. Sid the kid was his boy. Salary cap, and the homogenized league that resulted ruined the NHL. When every team is more or less the same, and the game devolves into scrambly “speed is all that matters”, as it is now, it’s not that interesting. Taking fighting out of the game was folly too. Taking the names off the refs and linemen’s sweaters was his doing too. Back in the day, the refs you hated were part of the story line.
If Gary Bettman decides to retire as NHL commissioner after the 2025 Stanley Cup Finals when he turns 73 on June 2, then deputy commissioner Bill Daly will take over as the league's new permanent commissioner. On June 25, the NHL Board of Governors will unanimously approve the Quebec City, Houston, Hartford, and Kansas City expansion bids, meaning that a Quebec City-based group headed by Pierre Karl Peladeau and Guy Laliberte, a Houston-based group headed by Tilman Fertitta, Dan Friedkin, and Michael Dell, a Hartford-based group headed by Ray Dalio and Todd Boehly, and a Kansas City-based group headed by Min Kao, Clark Hunt, and John Sherman will pay an expansion fee of $2.5 billion to award 4 expansion franchises to Quebec City, Houston, Hartford, and Kansas City as part of a 4-team tiered expansion, so the new Quebec City franchises will again be known as the Quebec Nordiques, the new Houston franchise will be known as the Houston Outlaws, the new Hartford franchise will again be known as the Hartford Whalers, and the new Kansas City franchise will be known as the Kansas City Cobras. On November 25, the CBC Sports, TSN, Sportsnet, and TVA Sports will sign a new 10-year media rights contract with the NHL, so beginning in the 2026-27 NHL season and running through the 2035-36 NHL season, TSN will hold rights to at least 75 exclusive national games per season (mostly on Tuesday and Thursday nights), including exclusive rights to opening night games, the NHL Awards, and the NHL Entry Draft, Sportsnet will retain rights to the Wednesday Night Hockey package, CBC TV will part ways with Rogers Sports & Media and regain its sole rights to the Hockey Night in Canada package as well as the Heritage Classic, the Thanksgiving Showdown, the Winter Classic, the All-Star Weekend, and the Stadium Series, CBC TV, TSN, TSN2, and Sportsnet will hold rights to the first 2 rounds of the Stanley Cup playoffs, CBC TV will hold rights to the Western Conference finals in odd years and the Eastern Conference finals in even years on a rotating basis, TSN and Sportsnet will hold rights to the Eastern Conference finals in odd years and the Western Conference finals in even years, CBC TV will hold exclusive rights to the Stanley Cup Finals annually through 2036, Ici Radio-Canada Tele will hold rights to CBC Sports' NHL coverage in French, RDS will hold rights to TSN's NHL coverage in French, TVA Sports will retain sub-license rights to Sportsnet's NHL coverage in French, CBC Gem will hold over-the-air streaming rights to all of CBC Sports' NHL telecasts and on-demand versions, TSN+ will hold over-the-air streaming rights to all of TSN's NHL telecasts and on-demand versions, and Sportsnet+ will retain over-the-air streaming rights to all of Sportsnet's NHL telecasts and on-demand versions. On March 10, 2027, Fox Sports, TNT Sports, and Prime Video will sign a new 8-year media rights contract with the NHL, so beginning in the 2028-29 NHL season and running through the 2035-36 NHL season, FS1 will hold rights to at least 75 exclusive national games per season (mostly on Tuesday and Thursday nights), including exclusive rights to opening night games, the All-Star Skills Competition, the NHL Awards, and the NHL Entry Draft (1st round only), TNT will retain rights up to 72 exclusive national games per season (mostly on Wednesday nights and occasionally on Sunday afternoons), Prime Video will hold rights to the Friday Night Hockey package as well as the late-season Monday Night Hockey package, NHL Network will continue to nationally televise select regular season games as well as select games in the first 2 rounds of the Stanley Cup playoffs not broadcast by either FS1, TNT, or Prime Video, Fox will hold rights to the Heritage Classic, the Thanksgiving Showdown, the Winter Classic, 36 late-season games on Saturday afternoons per season (4 games per week), the All-Star Game, and the Stadium Series, Fox, FS1, FS2, TNT, TBS, and Prime Video will hold rights to the first 2 rounds of the Stanley Cup playoffs, Fox and FS1 will hold rights to the Western Conference finals in odd years and the Eastern Conference finals in even years, TNT and Prime Video will hold rights to the Eastern Conference finals in odd years and the Western Conference finals in even years, Fox will hold exclusive rights to the Stanley Cup Finals annually through 2036, Fox Deportes will hold rights to Fox Sports' NHL coverage in Spanish, TruTV will retain rights to simulcast, alternate broadcast, and/or overflow TNT Sports' NHL coverage, Twitch will hold rights to alternate broadcast Prime Video's NHL coverage, Tubi will hold rights to all of Fox Sports' NHL telecasts and on-demand versions, and Max will retain rights to all of TNT Sports' NHL telecasts and on-demand versions under the B/R Sports Add-on banner. On July 3, 2028, the NHL will sell a 34.4% stake in NHL Network to Fox Corporation and retain the network's controlling 50% interest, while NBCUniversal will sell an 8% stake in NHL Network to Warner Bros. Discovery and sell the network's remaining 7.6% interest to Amazon.
Great breakdown
To be honest, his legacy for me will be SO MANY stupid non-issue decisions that have eroded fan faith in the league. No more special jerseys in warm up because some players had a cry over how they were treated when they didn't wear pride jerseys? Pulling down videos of youtubers who are actually growing the game instead of working WITH (and even maybe hiring) them to engage a market that the NHL has ZERO skill at providing for? Taking teams away from die-hard hockey markets quickly only to persist in markets that cannot sustain a team or are allowed to be mismanaged to implosion? I gave up on hockey in the 2000's because it became inaccessible (especially here in Australia) and while I'm glad I'm back, new leadership is a MUST.
Why is it that Bossy and Gretzky weren’t on the same line in neither the 1981 and 1984 Canada Cups? Makes no sense.
Hindsight is 20/20
What about the 1998 team?
Not a Canuck fan but maybe girls you should get rid of all yr drama.
The Canucks lost because they only scored 8 goals in 7 games. END OF STORY!!!!!!
what really happened was some other team not playing that night wanted to have a little fun so they disguised themselves as canucks and won the game to give vancouver 2 points out of pity
Brouder has always been a scum bag.
Maybe we will get another loyal team in Canada. Utah and no new Canadian team? That is a slap in the face to Canada.
As a Blues fan, I was very surprised Schenn didn’t get a penalty for throwing off Miller’s helmet.
YES having hronek to hold down their 2nd line D pairing is the secret sauce.. what I was saying earlier when he came back!!! Because Myers plays well with hughes, and hughes is such a beast.. it's a waste to have hronek and hughes on the same line IMO when they dont have enough solid d men.. I like this a lot
I'll say... The Canadian hockey clubs has been mistreated ever since Gary Bettman became the "Commissioner" of the NHL and his goal is to make money for the American hockey clubs which means that the American hockey clubs have to win every Stanley Cup Tournament and that is what Gary Bettman has been doing ever since he became Commissioner. The officiating affects the Canadian hockey clubs as well, Canadian teams get called on penalties so much easier than the American hockey clubs and nobody pays attention to it and it lowers moral for the Canadian team players and injuries start to happen to Canadian team players than it is for the American hockey team players in the regular season and playoffs.
Us Europeans loved the lockouts because it gave us a chance to see players we would otherwise only see in TV playing NHL. I remember how back in 2012 at my local team of Kärpät there was players such as Jussi Jokinen, Jason Demers and Kyle Turris. Although Turris didn't stay long as he got fed up with the long bus trips from Oulu to rest of Finland and the constant stops at ABC service stations which he apparently didn't really appreaciate. But Jokinen and Demers were both incredible players to see. I completely understand why NHL fans hated them but for us Europeans it gave some of the most awesome players in recent history
Mark Messier was the greatest Captain the Vancouver Canucks ever had, even the young players had high repect for him and saw how much Mark wanted the team to succeed and taught the young players to do well. Seeing Mark Messier through the media is a completely different story than what one can see face to face in the locker room and on the ice as teammates.
Mike Keenan and Mark Messier were great addtions to the Canucks Organization but it was the rest of the team players that had a serious "Rag Tag Attitude" which brought the Cunucks many losses from 1997-1999 seasons.
how did Miller not get an assist on garlands 2nd goal. Miller to Boeser shot and Garland got the rebound. Looks like a Gordie Howe hatrick to me for Miller
There's no way to change the roster now?
Only injuries I believe
@ good luck to the d then
Team Canada could always change it up Now then Later.
The challenge didnt work because Holloway never attempted to stop.
Why is the NHL doing the 4 nation faceoff in the first place! Also, it’s a bit meaningless without the Russians, Czechs, Slovaks, etc.
Let me blow your brain. By the time Russia is allowed to compete again, Russia will not be the 3rd best team in the world, but probably be behind Czechia. War isn't great for developing talented hockey players. Nor is the rapid demographic collapse in Russia. Russia disqualified itself from international sports and by the time they can play again they will not be a top 4 team.
Winnable game against Nashville? The boys are 0-2 against the Preds this year, outscored 8-3 and Stamkos has scored in practically every game he's played against. I wouldn't be surprised if this is another L. 3-1 Predators, Stamkos with 2 goals and an assist. They just seem to have their number no matter how much of a train wreck the Predators have been this year.
This is why people can’t stand the Canucks Fan Base… by the time Mark Messier showed up, darkening the Vancouver door. He had six fucking Stanley Cup rings. The fans didn’t like them because he was a fucking Edmonton oiler, and that was blasphemy to the Vancouver fan base.. you can act like everything would’ve been so much better if Gretzky had gone to Vancouver, but I beg to differ you guys would all still have something to bitch about. Wayne Maki’s number wasn’t hung from the rafters… I get that he was a beloved member of the Vancouver Canucks, but that was in 1973 now you want to say that oh well it was a given that Messier should’ve given up the same number he had winning all six of those Stanley cups because of Wayne Mackie and the fact that his number never hung from the rafters.. last year, you guys had a fantastic season but the vitriolic horse shit that went through the fan base after losing the Edmonton was disgusting and it’s no wonder. Nothing but bad things always happen to Vancouver Canucks hockey team and franchise. It’s the worst fans in the league. Always SOMEBODY to blame..
Bettman still denying the dangers of post-concussion syndrome and CTE despite the OVERWHELMING evidence. Hell, even the NFL doesn’t deny ot anymore. As someone who suffers with permanent post-concussion syndrome, this subject is no laughing matter. For the handful of former NHL players who die of suicide, there are thousands more who didn’t get that far and suffer with little to no help.
Take the best players
Rule 46.6 - - No player may remove his helmet prior to engaging in a fight. If he should do so, he shall be assessed a two minute minor penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct. Helmets that come off in the course of and resulting from the altercation will NOT result in a penalty to either player.
Miller is a asshole...Patterson is a wimp..GO CANUCKS GO
Canucks dominated the entire game.
Trade ep40
The helmet removal penalty doesn't count in a fight , its a penalty If you do it during play P.s vinny is your best defenseman that you have
Ahhh got it. Thanks!
I watched this on prime Monday night hockey
