What The Lightning Just Did To Stamkos Was DISGUSTING...

  • How many of you remember the 2008 marketing campaign called Seen Stamkos? How time flies! 16 years, 555 goals, and 2 Stanley Cups later, it is hard to believe that Steven Stamkos' time with the Tampa Bay Lightning has come to an end. I have no issue with him leaving, but I do have an issue with how Julien Brisebois and the Lightning handled it, and that is the topic of today's video.

In post, I realized "The worst period in franchise history" was a bit hyperbolic. OK Hockey LLC's ownership was tumultuous, but not as crazy as when the Lightning were allegedly owned by the Yakuza in the 1990s.

Once their contract is up, they still think they deserve a big chunk of change. You played and you got paid. If you're not willing to take a hometown discount when the big contract is up, move on. It would've been prudent for the front office to reach out to him and let him know they were interested in keeping him, but only if the dollars made sense. Yzerman basically said to Stamkos that if he loved being a Lightning, he will have to accept the contract even if it was less than his market value which he accepted because he truly did love being a Lightning. Its a business dude , this is no worse than no trade clauses that give players complete control. He got paid very very well for playing in Tampa. I hope the Leafs do the same with Tavares.

I thought that as well, but the 8x4 is a crazy contract. He's probably got 2 good seasons left where the 8 mil looks reasonable. Even Alex the great at 38 this season looked slow and out of his league. His production 5v5 has already fallen off a cliff, he's made up points by becoming a PP specialist but that won't work as well in Nashville. He's probably a 50-60pt guy in the 3rd year, 40-50 in the 4th . A million or two extra a year for the good feels is one thing, but Stamkos basically is getting twice his likely value over the contract.

Time will tell of course but he could also be productive all 4 of those years to, with today’s advances in physical conditioning and nutrition, much more possible than ever before. It’s a risk, but one Nashville was willing to take, and I’m definitely wearing a new Predator Stamkos sweater to my first game!

    Its part of the business
The players get obscene amount of money to play
    Get treated like royalty
Get into bidding wars with other teams when contracts are up
And yes. One day it all comes to an end
Stamkos is playing his last few yrs
    😅

Lol. Are we supposed to be sad when a multi million dollar athlete's career starts to wind down ? I'll save my tears for the guy on my street who gets laid off at the warehouse

They don’t owe Stamkos anything. They must have seen decline in his game and knew it would be bad business if they resigned him. And what you call sacrifices most ppl call injury prone. Also if he didn’t take less he wouldn’t have all those cups, stop being so soft and worrying about the millionaire who just got paid 32 million to play a game the next 4 years somewhere else.
