  • Some players coast on their natural talent, but others have to fight their way into the NHL and do whatever it takes to stay there. Over the years, we’ve seen players sacrifice their skill set to make it and remain in the league. This is the story of one such player: an underrated and skilled forward in juniors who changed his game, battled his way to the top, and never backed down. And in the process he became one of the most hated, or beloved players depending on what team you cheered for during his tenure.
Matthew Barnaby fought over 400 times between juniors and the NHL, taking on everyone from Eric Lindros to tie domi to Zdeno Char Despite having a fighting record comparable to journeyman boxing legend Luis Peotchi, standing at just 6'0" and weighing 190 pounds barnaby would chirp, hit and scrap just about anyone. Get ready to hear about the fearless journey and the relentless spirit of Matthew Barnaby and how he was able to make it and stay in the best league in the world. #nhlplayoffs #hockey #nhl #matthewbarnaby #buffalosabres

The NHL is sorely lacking these lunatic characters like Barnaby, Hextall, Ray, etc. that made the 80s and 90s hockey so special. All the players are sterile robots these days.

I totally agree but.....People need to make up their mind. People are always saying that, but when someone like....Avery....Rempe....Marchand....etc etc enter the league, they get so criticized for lack of skill.

Some are lacking some personality but most players aren't especially top players like McDavid definitely can be a character when he wants to be- especially in some interviews! But hockey players are also usually more humble than most other sport's athletes and they prefer to be stoic and composed most the time- then kick back and let it out later when the opportunity comes! That's the Canadian way!

I grew up 30 mins outside Buffalo and am a Flyers fan.
He gave us fits but he was an absolute beauty.
I respect(ed) him because he wasn't a dirty player, just a gnat that could make your wires cross and take a penalty. He was probably responsible for hundreds of goals on pp's that he wasnt on and never got a point for it.
He was a pest and found a niché in the game to have a career playing a game he loved.
I hope and pray he is free of any head trauma or PTSD from the role he played.
I saw a pod with him a while back and it shed some light into his career. Pretty sure it's nasty knuckles. Check it out.

I think that they gave up A Scorer (I think that it might have been Bobby Carpenter, who didn't have the scoring touch that he had when he was A Devil), but, he was a presence & pretty decent Role Player. I also had remembered him as a player with My Other Favorite Team, The Chicago Blackhawks. Let me know what you think & if I was right about The Deal that made him A Ranger.

As a former resident of Tampa Bay at the time of Barnaby's tenure there, I feel as though this video glazed over and slightly misrepresented his time with the Lightning. Barnaby was brought on at a time under coach Steve Ludzik, who like an aggressive two man forechecking style. Despite his reputation as being a very physical player, the Lightning needed scoring and were very forthcoming with hopes that Barnaby would prove to be a more offensive player than Wayne Primeau, for whom he was traded. Unfortunately, Barnaby was often too late to contribute to the play offensively, but proved to be a liability when it came to the referees. His behavior seemed to encourage questionable calls by the referees (such as Paul Stewart, who already had a reputation of making calls that often went against the Lightning) when Barnaby got scrappy. Between poor production and often leaving his team short handed, his time in Tampa Bay was exceptionally lack luster. When the next season started up and Ludzik was replaced with John Tortorella, from everything I heard it's not a huge surprise that Torts didn't tolerate Barnaby's antics for long.
On a personal note, I will share that I was PSYCHED when we traded and acquired Barnaby back in the day. I remembered well the 7-3 win by Buffalo from a handful of years earlier against the Bolts, and thought he would bring an enthusiasm and energy that was lacking on our team at the time. Fifty-eight games was all he played for the team, managing four goals and four assists. I was so disappointed, and when we traded him to the Rangers (for Zdeno Ciger... who hadn't played in the NHL for six years previously...) it almost felt as though we were trading him to get rid of him. This, after trying to pair him with Vincent Lecavalier to get his offense going. Barnaby might have felt "under-utilized", but I suspect more likely he was more successful as a third line winger bringing high energy in short bursts rather than lugging more ice time as a top six player. Eh, the Lightning won the cup three years after they traded him, so it worked out for TB in the end.
