the Alexander Mogilny story is like something from a spy novel in fairness, i think he flew from sweden to the UK first and then to canada and crossed the us/canadian border in a car and then was sequestered and hidden in buffalo for a while because they were afraid the KGB would have him killed for defecting...
I LOVE that you put The Hockey Guy into the iceberg. That guy puts in an absurd amount of work. And being in America where hockey is rarely (IF EVER) talked about or given any spotlight whatsoever on our big sports shows, we have to go to guys like THG on RUclips. He's been a godsend for fans like myself. Lately guys like Pat McAfee has been giving hockey it's just due though so hopefully he can spearhead getting the sport on more mainstream shows.
You forgot to mention another pre-Original 6 team. This would be the Seattle Metropolitans who won the Stanley Cup in 1917. They might have won another Cup if not for the breakout of the influenza. This is definitely part of our hockey history in Seattle. Being from Seattle and growing up watching teams like the Totems, Thunderbirds a junior team (which happens to be where Patrick Marleau played before being drafted by the San Jose Sharks) and finally the Kraken, I hate to see the Metropolitans not given their due.
The Metropolitans were absolutely Stanley Cup champions; but were also not an NHL team. They were members of the Pacific Coast Hockey League; and back in the 1910's and early 20's; the PCHL champions would play the NHL champions in a a world series style match-up for the Stanley Cup at the end of each season.
@@thunderhammerx2966Wow, I had no idea of that. I thought the Original 6 were the only Teams playing professional hockey. I didn’t realize there were leagues before them. Good Shit right there, Thankyou for the history lesson…… too bad they didn’t teach this shit in school, I prob would’ve done a lot better and went a lot further than D Block Walpole State Prison. 🤷♂️
Phenomenal Deep dive Good Sir, Keep on keeping on! FWIW, I was @ the Winter Olympics in Nagano Japan in 1998... After a night out and just after ☀️ 🌅 sunrise, I started walking up a steep set of stairs when I looked up and saw Lindros and his father Carl descending (if y'all recall, Carl acted as Eric's agent in all of his NHL negotiations).. I had about 15 seconds to think of something to say in passing... "You know if you guys had signed with the Nordique, you'd have won a Cup with Colorado"... I thought it was a good chirp... Carl responded " if we'd have signed with the Nordique, they'd never have left Quebec"... Ooooh. Saucy reply ferda.
For the McSorley stick, if someone changed my sticks I would notice right away C’mon he’s a pro no way he played with a stick that wasn’t his especially a different blade
What we NEED is a 12 hour Ken burns style (like his baseball) history of the hockey pre-nhl to today Theories about how the league started like the story of the lumber jacks in BC organizing the league etc etc The players the league and the sweaters in the olden days would alone make for some very interesting content. "State of Minneapolis?" Little blooper there. North Stars played in Bloomington, a Minneapolis suburb. So much went into losing this team. Keep up the good work.
The 1970s Flyers are insane to watch. Spectators jumping the glass to fight players, bench clearing brawls, and they're arguably responsible for a lot of future penalty rule changes and safety measures
quick side-note, Bettman only prefers US teams because the Canadian dollar is so much weaker than the US dollar and so the NHL gets less revenue. Don't forget, the NHL is a business too...
Don Luce ("Loose") also had a story about the KGB visiting his house in Buffalo, where Mogilny was living. Luckily, both weren't home, and Don's wife knew what was up and played dumb about Mogilny
Am I crazy or was there another NHL iceberg video that used to be on RUclips that was basically this video but it disappeared a few months ago? (NOT the idontgivetkachuk videos)
Malarchuk played 10 days after almost dying!!! That is incredible. I am sure there was no PTSD after that incident. Hockey Players are by far the toughest pro athletes
i do think bettman has something against the canadian teams, but im also not entirely sure he would go through the crazy amount of effort he wouldve had to so far to keep canada from winning the cup. crazier things have happened i suppose.
If he truly did; it seems doubtful he would have spearheaded increased profit sharing for Canadian teams to help them survive the exchange rate crisis in the late 1990's. If he had not done so; more Canadian teams could very well have ended up like Quebec or Winnipeg. The commissioner actually seems to respect the history and contributions of Canadian teams; and also strangely seems to enjoy that people despise him anyway; even after he helped Winnipeg get their team back.
Gary Bettman hates hockey period. He loves basketball...every move he has made has benefitted bball and hurt hockey. The NHL was a top 3 sport when he took over as commissioner after being recommended for the job by the head of the NBA where Bettman held the position under the Commisioner. It has become quite obvious that this was all by design. It amazes me that this treason has flown under the radar and nobody seems to suspect a thing. But hey...Basketball is on top while the NHL can barely be watch on TV...way to go Gary.🖕
i was a bouncer at a bar here in ontario canada called the original six. awsome bar did alot of my boozin' there. then i went on to the big leagues and worked at Bunnies and Fantasia. the owner thought he was some big time mafia boss and would walk around with a couple knuckle draggers flanking him thinking he owned the world. one day we all ganged up on those 2 knuckle draggers (they were big boys) and beat seven shades of shit out of the both of them. he had closed circuit tv in his house and cameras everywhere. he trusted no one not even his own family. DiGiuseppe was nothing but a wannabe mafioso a bully a scumbag and should have gone to prison for many many years but as usual all but one charge was dropped. sorry that bar just reminded me of all that fun. and believe me i have seen it all when i worked there u name it i bet i have seen it. and if you think dating strippers would be a fun idea think again don't bother most of them are hooked on drugs and will bleed you dry of any money u may have. ok i'm done great channel awsome work sir.

Very good video. Thanks for putting it up. I knew about so many, but, not all of these.
Thank you thank you thank you for not having the recency bias that most YT hockey videos have.
I chirped Marty Brodeur's son when he played for The Admirals and they stopped in Atlanta lol. This is the most obscure hockey lore ever 😎👍

Poor Grapes, he got canned for politics...and not even hockey politics🤦
Yea we should of traded Ron Maclean and the 2nd intermission wood stove for Don.
You people! crack me up
@@shaunhickey7233 bahahaha you people indeed. Be well my friend🤙
Is RUclips glitching and keeping the video at 360p?
Excellent video, highly entertaining and informative! I'd like to hear more about the Stanley Cup's history.
Should have done a quick segment on Rick Jeannerete
Don Luce ("Loose") also had a story about the KGB visiting his house in Buffalo, where Mogilny was living. Luckily, both weren't home, and Don's wife knew what was up and played dumb about Mogilny
that Bobby Ryan story is crazy, make a vid on that
I’m pretty sure Gary Bettman just hates himself 😂
Your great hockey content deserves better audio and visual quality

Love the vid

watching this on the 23rd feels weird now
banger video!
Wait a minute... Didn't the Hamilton Tigers become the New York Americans, later the NY Rangers?
PHIL KESSEL!
Tusimoto??? Are you serious?
Hamilton will never have team as the Leafs & Sabres have to give the ok for a NHL team to play there
0:4:41 who the hell thought it would be a good idea to name a hockey team after a puritanical religious cult?
there is more money to be made with american teams we make good money but not close to american teams.
Stan Jonathan, not Stan Johnson.
Bettman hates Canadian teams, ain’t no way I can be convinced otherwise
