It really wasn't the concussion that caused the problems. The doctors missed a secondary vertebrae injury that caused many symptoms similar to a concussion that kept him out for so long. It wasn't until Sid talked to Tom Brady, who advised him to get a second opinion, that it was finally caught and he came back not long after. Pens fired their whole medical staff that off season. Without all the missed time he at minimum wins 4 Harts, 4 Art Ross and 4 Ted Lindsays. And thats a conservative estimate.
Fun story: On the night of the infamous Islanders brawl game, I was working as a drum tech/sound guy at a resort in Palm Springs, CA. I was watching the game on a TV as the band was playing, but couldn't get all the information about what went on as I didn't own a smartphone yet. We had finished up the gig, packed up the car, and were about to leave when Charles Barkley pulled up to the place and offered to buy us drinks! So we walked back in to the bar where the band played and he bought a round of drinks for everyone. In the hour or more that we were there with him (just two band members, me, the bartender, and one other lucky person), the highlights came back up on the TV and I mentioned to the drummer that this was the game I was watching. Charles heard me, and said "yeah, they were getting revenge on Brent Johnson." He knew all about the context, the history...he's a hockey fan! So...that was pretty cool...talking hockey with Charles Barkley in a bar with less than 6 people.
25:39 i wish you showed the full clip of that goal. Not a Pens fan but thats one of my favorite Crosby plays ever, he completely deked and toyed the whole sens defense for like 6 seconds and finding Letang through sheer willpower. Amazing stuff. Great video though!
As an Oilers fan for over 30 years your series on them was unreal! I cant wait for this one. Just in time for the Hall of Fame game Oct.25th when they play each other too.🎉
i finally got around to finishing the video in its entirety and i think one of my favourite parts about the community you’ve built is that you can say things like “wait THAT mikael samuelsson” and everyone knows who you’re talking about lol
Flawless video dude I was entering my super moody and tumultuous teens around this time so a lot of this is a real blur aside from a few notable Islanders brawls. I really appreciate the trip dahn memory lane (albeit a bizarre and frustrating one) with a fellow lucky kid that got to grow up watching Sidney Crosby. Cant wait for part 2 🖤💛
Amazing 💚 - have just found this channel and finished binge watching the other videos!! Seriously have no clue why this channel isn't huge (yet!) - thank you!
I really love these long form video. The oilers series was fantastic and I'm stoked for this one. Pittsburgh was my 2nd favourite team in the post lockout years (life long flames fan). Ever consider a video or maybe even a series about the flames run in the finals in 04? The hilarity of terrible teams, bad draft picks, bad trades, bad signings, even worse nonsigning, probably the most untalented lunch and pail roster (minus Iggy and Kipper) to make it to game 7 of finals could really fit well with your style. I'm also super stoked for the inevitible 15 part series on the 2011 - 2032, magicals years between playoff appearences of the Buffalo Sabers.
I said it to someone else but I really feel like the Flames are due a video. They kinda feel lost in the mix in Western Canada, they don't have the legacy of the Oilers or suffering of the Canucks, they're the middle child
I was excited for this video, and then the first frame wiped the smile off of my face quickly. 2009 never happened. The series wasn’t finished. This is an AI image.
great video. I've always been a Pens fan from the UK and in two days I'm finally making the trip across the pond to see them in person so this was perfectly timed!
As a Pens fan, these were some dark years. I hate Halak, 2013 should have been our year, but we became mental midgets, the stupid NY Rangers. Thank God for 16 and 17
Not only was 2013 a big disappointment but you can argue that 2014 as well cost the penguins another cup with that monumental 3-1 choke job vs the Rangers in the 2nd round
@@onerepublicrox Montreal may have been cup hangover tbh, and the Habs simply riding a wave/being a team of destiny that postseason. It definitely didn't seem hard to predict a Hawks vs Pens finals that year though, I'll just say that. 2011 vs Tampa was from missing both Peak Crosby and an injured Malkin (lol), the 2014 series vs New York actually is sorta insane to me because the Pens lowkey could've easily handled the 2014 Kings if they made the Finals IMO.
@@jfedol7760 2010 halak was godly and fleury wasn’t the greatest. Yes, the 2011 choke is forgivable. They didn’t have Crosby or Malkin. 2014, we had a defense first system and the offense dried up. We also choked a 3-1 lead to the rangers in 2022. So 4 times from 2010-2022
Hats off to you, Mr. Oakley. Astounded by how well put together your videos are and how you manage to capture the nostalgia. Makes me relive this era of the Pens. Truly remarkable. Videos like this are why Disney+ and other streaming services won't gain a foothold any time soon in my home.
that 2010 caps season could lead to its own series because the fallout and make up trades that were made from it lead to the caps getting the back to back pres trophies and cup way later than they should’ve
Ben. You beauty. When you said Thanks alot David Volek' All I could think of is how I was hoping for Pitt to whooop Mtl --- Quebec Nordiques were stacked and they decided to lose to Mtl Mtl cupcaked NYI. Thanks alot, Volek.
That 09/10 Flyers team had a bad regular season, but were actually pretty freakin stacked in retrospect. I don't think its guaranteed they beat them. Thats not even mentioning the Blackhawks that year, who were absolutely loaded with one of the best post lockout rosters. No chance they win that year.
Halak robbed the hockey world of an Ovi Crosby rematch and a Washington Chicago final. Smh (Edit: I know that they matched up 3 times after but the hype of this rematch would’ve been next level)
Always feel so bad for Marc Savard. He played Jr B for my local team near Ottawa and, imo, that should've been the end of Cooke's career. League should have banished him.
Gomez may have been overpaid but he is by far the best player i have ever played with and against. I did beat him and everyone else at a hockey camp in a shootout competition but that doesnt mean much.
The "game" with the Islanders being as noteworthy as it is has always confused me, it seemed like a fairly standard blowup because tensions were allowed to escalate as dirty play went unpunished. A league that watches a bench full of players laughing as someone on the other team leaves the ice due to injury and doesn't at the very least fine some people is inviting shit like that to happen. When the league doesn't police the boys, the boys police themselves. Under no circumstances should you let the boys police themselves because they turn off their brains and stop playing hockey. I genuinely do not care who started it or who took it too far, both teams went into that game knowing what was going to happen. The goons got called up, every ref, player, GM and fan in the building knew that something was going to happen and nothing was done to prevent it. Whatever I'm sure that 3 game suspension really taught everyone their lesson.
I want to live in the alternate reality where Crosby never gets that concussion.
I've been there. It's glorious.
