    I just started to surfskate. I did buy a YOW 34,5. Still learning how to ride and stand safely on the board, and I don't know if I can even do a kick turn on it because my board is so heavy and long (I am quite small and light). But I wanna try as soon as I feel stable enough! Thx for your video!

    100% agree with your assessment of the cardboard surfer program, Cris Mills and OMBE, Chris G. I live in the competitive surfing hub of SoCal. I started surfing when I could drive myself to the beach and thought I was doing pretty well. Fast forward many years, my pre-teen daughter is now in her 3rd season surfing competitively in a feeder organization to USA Surfing (the Olympic development team). One of her coaches currently has two women on the 2024 WSL CT. My daughter's current coach was a former #1 surfer on the ASP....legit coaches, in other words. The cardboard surfer program gives the same info on how to pop up as the perfect pop-up but just doesn't include the flexibility and strength workouts. I used it to learn, fix and continually monitor my pop up (which was exactly what Chris G was describing his to be), my daughter uses it for her pop ups. The cardboard surfer is such an awesome, easy and low-cost way to train at home and everything aligns with and often gives more detail and explanation than the live coaching ever can and is a perfect supplement for someone like my daughter -- or a perfect coaching program for someone, up through the intermediate level, who doesn't have access to live coaching. Cardboard surfer discusses posture, drive, turns, etc, in addition to popping up. It fully translates to your surf-skate and in the water. How many chances do you have to practice in the water? You can knock out 20-50 reps on a piece of cardboard in a few minutes. Anecdotally, one of the other surf dads, who himself was a pro surfer and just recently dominated at 25' La Jolla Cove in January, uses these programs to help give him the words to understand what he's been doing all these years already so that he can effectively teach it to his kids. Sorry if TMI...

    Hi Chris, You say that timing the extension is the most important part and I totally agree as Im having problems with this. But I'm still a bit confused about when exactly to extend. Can you elaborate? Do you wait until the board is already up the slope? Is there a rule of thumb? Love the channel!

    • @ChrisGenau
      @ChrisGenau 6 месяцев назад

      Hey there, first of all: sorry for making you wait a full week before getting an answer. But now on to your question. I think it is important to develop the correct feeling, but of course that doesn't help much early on obviously. BUT I would like you to start playing with your extension. Go out in your next session and try to extend at various moments. If you do it, that way you will hit it right a few times, thus giving you the feeling that you are looking for. And I promise, you WILL feel it, when you hit it. So experimenting and developing that feeling is absolute paramount. But now on the answer that will help you find the right moment. Looking at myself I think the moment I'm looking to extend is in the apex of the transition. So just when you boards hit the middle curve in between turning from flat to up-slope. And at exactly that moment try to think of your extension as if you we're jumping up and forward on your board, throwing your arms into the direction and help you project up the wall. I'd love to draw it out and get my thoughts down in a video haha, but unfortunately for now, here on youtube I can't answer questions with a video I think. So I hope my above thoughts make any sense at all to you. Let me know, if that was helpful, or if you have any remaining questions? I'm happy to try my best and help you.

    Seems much more applicable to surfing than the typical surf skate stalling carve top turn. I've never seen the OMBE guys using kick turns though. Thoughts?

    • @ChrisGenau
      @ChrisGenau 7 месяцев назад

      Yes I agree that doing these turns will translate better into surfing, than any surfskate practice in the flats. I still believe that practice in the flats has tremendous benefits. You are correct OMBE does not teach kickturns at all. My guess here, this kind of kickturn would be like a foam climb or quick tapping the lip kind of turn in surfing. Very skate modern style. As it governs a backfoot heavy approach. but it isn't really a clean top turn with perfect technique the way ombe teaches us. Hope my ramble is at all relatable and remotely understandable as well :D

      @@ChrisGenau Yes, thank you for the reply. Are you still on your CX trucks? I’ve been experimenting with CX, C5, and traditional trucks (wedged). Would like to just commit to one setup though for ramps and bowls, maybe the CX with a stiff setup.

    • @ChrisGenau
      @ChrisGenau 7 месяцев назад

      @@ryanallen6092 yep I’m still mostly on my CX trucks almost exclusively. But I do have a Chinese board from sixty-six (was gifted to me by their company) OMBE was given some too. It is the all white board you see sometimes in their videos in the bowl. That truck is a CX derivative with a little less stability. I don’t think it hurts to surf different setups, I’d say it’s like surfing different boards and fin setups. But would 100% recommend cx for bowls, quarter pipes and pump tracks :)

    Little late to the party, but yeah, the spotlight effect gets me almost whenever I notice a potential audience while surfskating, skiing, snowboarding, climbing, sailing, mountain biking, and so on. This feeling can be intimidating, and I often seek out less crowded locations. However, I've also found that when there's a small group of bystanders struggling with their own activities, it can actually motivate me to push myself harder. As I age, I worry less about being watched and have come to realize that barely anyone pays attention. Just like you say. Thanks for clarifying it!

      @@vato6475 wohne jetzt auch in Berlin. Und kann das bestätigen. Aber wenn es jetzt bald wieder warmer und trockener wird muss ich auch mal noch mehr scouten. Habe ich letztes Jahr auch nicht so viel gemacht.

      Thank you very much 🙏🏼 what is one tutorial video that is not in my channel library yet, that you would really like to see? soon revamping the content again and I want to make the videos that the people really want to see and need :) thanks for your help 🤝

    thanks for the vid, other surf trainers have a board and a complete ball, is this necessary? or the bosu ball is good enough?

      Honestly I think the Bosu ball is good enough. This is already a difference from surfing, it’s only trying to use similar movement patterns. You won’t ever be able to fully mimic anything. So to my mind, anything on top is more of a gimmick :)

    I heard several times that skateboarding takes a bit of physical skill and a whole lot of mental power. I always assumed it referred to "commiting to dangerous tricks", but do you think it may also apply to the progression mindset that one requires? Thanks for bringing concepts of psychology to skateboarding tutorials, I will try the visualization technique some more to see if it helps me finally nail a proper ollie

      Yes, I 100% believe that. I think it might even be more important. With Progression comes skill, and skill makes scary things less scary because one learns to trust in their own ability :)

    Thanks for the straight-to-the-point tutorial dude, it will come in handy! I started skating and surfskating a few months ago (I'm 32 and had never done board sports) so even the easy stuff feels either challenging or outright intimidating, including relatively simple stuff like riding off a curb. I was playing around in some slopes near where I live and was actually wondering how the heck I could do a very narrow turn on them, and the kickturn is definitely a way! I'll go check your other vidsos ✌

      Wow that is awesome 👏 congrats to you for starting out and learning something brand new in your 30s. I know skateboarding can be intimidating, especially when so many things look crazy smooth from the outside, but are so hard to get right and coordinated the when only starting out. I’m looking to soon start creating more videos again, so if I can ever help you, please just let me know. Also if I may ask you a question-if you could request any video that would help yourself a lot, what would that be?
