  • In this video Tulio, a local grom from Namibia 🇳🇦 and me are teaching you how to the frontside hack on your #surfskate - you will see the difference in the two most common techniques and have them analyzed side by side to show the differences.
    While one technique works great on a skateboard for a #Surskater and won't really translate into the water. So I'm learning along in this video with you guys to get this maneuver closer to surfing practice.
    As always there are added chapters so it's easy for you to see what youcan expect and jump around if needed. I thank you all for watching and let us know your thoughts, feedback and critique. All links in the description down below 🤙🏼

Right now I'm stuck in a rut in the same way you were, Chris -- loading my front foot and swinging my back foot gets me to 90 degrees max and I'm extremely lucky if I don't fall off. Love the comparison between Tulio and your technique Chris, the emphasis on front leg extension/ heel side rail engagement was cool to see.
    On FS Snaps usually the arms lift up overhead in surfing so that might be your next work on after figuring out the front foot pressure.

    Now, please correct me if I am wrong because although I was a hardcore surfer, that was quite a while ago. When you mentionned the snaps that look cool, but don't relate, I see several ways they relate; re-entry, off the lip, maybe even a floater, and just making a turn of the wave at a similar angle to stall out for the heck of it. At times, during these manouvers, we may extend the tail a little further(by accident or choice) and need to move our tail a bit to alter direction, or, we accidentally dig the rail in on a poor angle. I see it relates here to give us that certain muscle memory of engage/re-engage at an angle almost 90 degrees to the face of the wave. Also, often during these manouvers we are perhaps 'old school' and are only twisting 90 degrees to the face of the wave land these, not doing 360s. I like your videos and see you are good hearted. Any surfing videos to show surfskate translations to the water?

    • @ChrisGenau
      @ChrisGenau  2 года назад

      Hey there, I agree with you that I should’ve articulated better - that only for the carving to tail blow turn there is no relation of the aforementioned technique that would translate into the water.
      But you’re certainly right - especially a speed check to stall into the barrel is basically exactly the technique demonstrated by me on the surfskate.
      There is no such video of me surfing, because I usually do not have anyone to film me. So I only have go pro mouth mounted footage of myself surfing mostly.
      But I’m planning on extending on that the next few surf trips :) currently I’m all landlocked in Germany and going through my final year of med school.
      Thank you for your comment and taking the time to leave your thoughts 🙏🏼 I really appreciate that

    Can you do the slide using 78A 70mm wheels?

  • @antcap7
    @antcap7 2 года назад +1

    Very nice video! Can you recommend the size and hardness of the wheels?

    • @ChrisGenau
      @ChrisGenau  2 года назад +2

      Well I only skate my Carver stock wheels - the yard 70mm and duro 78a - they work fine for me in all the conditions I’ve skated so far. Streets, parks, bowl and even the rough sidewalks here in Namibia right now
      but I do use the surfskate a lot as a means of transportation so I need these softer wheels.
      if you want your board to slide easier and your mostly skating smooth concrete, you can go with smaller wheels and a little harder too - it will make the slides easier. but honestly it’s just about finding what feels right to you :)

      @@ChrisGenau Thanks Chris. I am clear where I am failing: lack of commitment and confidence in the maneuver. I see it clear in my mind, but the last fall still hurts. I am 48 years old and I tend to be more conservative and less risky.

    • @ChrisGenau
      @ChrisGenau  2 года назад +1

      @@davidcondes ah I See - well in that case first a big shoutout to you for getting after it anyways.
      Being less risky isn’t necessarily a bad thing as it keeps you from hurting yourself - however there is a threshold that you need to identify for yourself, where you feel like it’s starting to hold you back too much.
      I have two tips for that. 1st and probably a faster fix (if you’re not doing that already) wear some protection to ease your mind and be able to take more risks again.
      2nd explore your fears and if these are founded on true chances of you really possibly injuring yourself or if these are maybe a bit overly exaggerated and you’re just having too many concerns :)
      Whatever it might be - I hope you’ll keep it up and progress through it

    Nice video! Very clear, also awesome program, what program is this on the ipad? You also edit on the ipad?
    But I am going to practice this, I do it exactly the same way you do it, disconnect upper and lower and counter rotate from each other. For some reason that is the most natural thing to do, but committing to your new technique is scary dude! Have you tried on his board btw? It could also be that your wheels arent hard enough and you need more force to get it sliding (just a thought)

    • @ChrisGenau

    What's Tulio's setup? Looks like wedged tkp's

    • @ChrisGenau
      @ChrisGenau  2 года назад +3

      well to be honest, Tulios setup can't even be considered that. The skatedeck is a old and worn down regular skateboard, and the trucks are some generic trucks he got once - he doesn't even have skate hardware so they were screwed in with regular bolts, with the head being a little too big so they're sticking out on top of the deck.
      To be fair it's amazing how he's still able to skate that thing - and showed me again that correct technique is much more important than the system one is skating 🤙🏼
