How does someone contact you about rebuilding a generator?

G day Interesting. Ths
I just picked up what appears to be an identical tester. My manual states it is a 1941 year unit.
@@rickrodt Lucky find. I'm sure they were made over a period of many years. Can you share that manual? Likeca .pdf file? I'd like to have a copy if possible.
Really like the pressurized plug tester. Cool! I've seen some homemade ones, but love the original old tools
It is a cool old tool. Ive had it over 30 years and used it a lot.
Awesome!
It brings back old memories of working on a much larger machine.
Great video! I love these old tools... thanks for showing how to use it. Gotta try and find a Growler
Steve, is there a way to test for a short in an armature without a Growler? Is there a multimeter test?
Not that I'm aware of. But growlers are not too hard to find. As you saw in my other video, you can test for grounds from the commutator to the shaft or laminations with an ohmmeter.
@@steveblancard5566 thanks Steve!
what’s the name of this so i can get this for my truck
I don't recall a name on it. But do a search on ebay for "bicycle turn signals". You'll find a variety of them.
Can the short be repaired or do you just scrap it?
It could be rewound, but that is pretty expensive. Typically I just swap in another armature.
Steve, can you make a video on swapping a Stevens 44 RF block with a centerfire block? Turns out that RMC is making 25 Stevens CF brass.
I dont have a Stevens 44 rimfire block to swap, only the centerfire block in my .25-25.. In the #4 rolling block, it is just one screw to change blocks. Very easy. RMC makes almost anything. I have some of their .25-.25 Stevens brass. It works well.
Nice work. Many thanks!
Steve where did you get the centerfire block? I have a Stevens 44 in 25 Stevens RF and a Stevens 44 in 25-20SS. Can I swap the 25-20SS block and use it in the .25 Stevens RF with Rocky Mountain 25-20 Stevens centerline brass? Is it that simple?
I had an extra block converted to centerfire. You may be able to swap the Stevens blocks, but check the headspace.
this is great information, thank you very much for posting
Excellent video! Thank you very much!
I remember this turning up as Tubbs' backup gun a couple of times on Miami Vice. Whilst I wouldn't necessarily recommend for primary carry, I'd say having it as a backup in a convenient place would still be very handy. Wouldn't mind seeing the round vs a ballistic dummy sometime just to see what kind of performance one can expect.
Great video. How do you adjust voltage on evr in generator
You dont. The EVR adjusts voltage automatically based on electrical load.
Hi Steve, great video, fascinating carbine. It looks like you're getting a lot of blowback from the breech area when you fire. Is that leakage around the .22 blank? Case not expanding due to low pressure load? I can understand keeping pressures low because I think the split breech design doubles the force on the breech block pin, unlike the later rolling block design.
I was getting blowback. It was caused by the thin acorn blanks used for primers being pierced. Watch this other video, where I corrected the problem. ruclips.net/video/WmIgXCcZSPU/видео.htmlsi=CtdS11Tj7udN4Dtb
@@steveblancard5566 Thanks! I should've looked for that video first.
Filé
What a cool piece of vintage test equipment! This is an example of something used in an era of actually fixing things, not just removing the old one and bolting on a new one, like we do today (in the first world). It's in amazing condition, especially considering it's almost 100 years old.
Hello Steve, Cabot here again, I noticed that on the brush you removed that the holder would look like it is meant for a CCW armature rotation even though the application is CW. My 3 brush Autolite GCJ-4801 for a ‘41 Willys confused me because the main brush holders were also like yours but the 3rd brush holder was oriented in the expected direction to better support the brush. I checked Auto-lite service Parts catalog and all are as listed. I also have a question related to Autolite three brush generator which is off topic, it has a spring clamp to hold the third brush holder my manual does not say how tight to tighten the screw on the spring clamp but if I were to tighten it down I doubt one would be able to adjust the 3rd brush without removing the endcap
That was the stock brusholder configuration. I don't recall the autolite 3rd brush spring tension. But on Ford generators I mostly work on now, tension is enough to hold it firmly in place, yet allow it to be moved by hand.
Please Google article , .41 BARKS AGAIN , for an actual modern day shooting in Illinois, by a police detective armed with a single shot , hideout gun in caliber .41 short ... The bottom line is it was deadly and worked quite well at close range ...
I converted my 10/22 the same as you did, refinished stock, Tech 200 sights, sling and oiler, magazine extension, and I love it. One other modification I did, I purchased a bolt handle extension on Ebay from JWH Custom to replace the stock Ruger handle for about 25 bucks. It was an improvement both in use and appearance. This rifle is so fun, good looking, and accurate to shoot. Thanks for the video.
I am amazed that you could make a rimfire using a .22 acorn blank with such a tiny brass case. You are the man. Are you by any chance of Swiss ancestry ?
Thanks. No, not Swiss.
It’s not real hard to jacket pull and make rimfires. There primed with the white part of a strike anywhere match. A pile of them are wetted down and ground into a paste then while damp use a tooth pick to pack the rim. Let them dry then load powder and lead. Never had one fail to go off. The casing is made of flat piece of brass cut into a round disk and pressed through a series of dies. The brass gets annealed every third die. I use a toaster oven. I got a black powder 22 long long I make ammo for. Learned on RUclips. Think they were making 22LR but the idea is the same. It is a little work but not to bad if you ever wanna try the real deal the way it was then check it out. Might be under drawn casings.
great condenser and video
Hello Steve, I’m finally assembling my ‘41 Willys Auto-lite generator. I was going to use an open ball bearing but I see my NOS armature does not have the part that slides over and up against the shaft snap ring that the inner felt slides on. If this was on my old armature I lost it when I sent it to a shop for a quote to rewind. Have you seen anyone selling this part, I assume it also sets axial placement of the armature since the bearing is pressed up to it.
I have not. Probably the best thing to do is look for an extra generator just for spare parts.
@@steveblancard5566 thank you I’m going to try to find a spare parts unit.
General Douglas MacArthur , had one as did John Dillinger . Then there was HAVE GUN WILL TRAVEL , with Richard Boone . Almost forgot Doc Holliday , his girlfriend Big nose Kate gave him one as a gift, engraved ...
Simpsons brought me here
Camera should be focused on the generator and not on you.. Could not see what you are doing.
Good point, sorry about that. But the video is intended to be used along with Mike's excellent printed instructions that have good close up photos.
Hey Steve....Just ran your initial motoring test on a generator pulled from an old CJ-2A in a Vermont cornfield....it works!! Looking forward to learning how to rebuild this bad boy....Thanks again! Steve
Top!🤝👍
Steve I know this is a long shot but could I pay you for some of your custom .32 RF? I recently acquired one of these rare pieces of history and would like to be able to fire it more than a few times.
Sorry, but no. But check out this place. They sell reloadable .32 rimfire ammunition kits. www.hlebooks.com/32rfkit/prices.htm
😁☕👍
Excellent idea! Thanks for the great video.
What projectile did you use? Weight and design or mold used? Thanks for the video.
123 gr bullet from an Old West Bullet Molds mold.
@@steveblancard5566 Thanks for the info. I have about 25 unfired .41 rimfire rounds but wanted to reload those when rhe time comes. Thanks again. PS. You might do a video on loading that round.
I discovered the problem was a loose ground wire on the field. It’s charging now and puts out enough current but only at fast idle.
Don’t have a favorite supplier ?
No, not really.
Where do you find ammo ? I just had one given to me .
I reload my own.
Currently working on a Ballard right now could use some info on the loads

I converted my 34 Ford truck to a positive ground and installed a 12 volt regulator. The generator passes the run test but still doesn’t charge. I’ve replaced the regulator and still no luck. Can you help?
I assume this is a later 2 brush generator. If it motors, but does not charge, make sure the brushes are seated properly. I just posted a video about this. But many things could cause this, too numerous to cover here. If seating the brushes doesnt help, try bypassing the regulator and use a field jumper as shown in this video. The generator should put out max current by doing this. But only do it for a minute to determine if the problem is with the generator or regulator.
I wanted to know if I sent you my cut out , how much you would charge to go thru it and set it up correctly. It is already a Terne finish so I don't need any refinishing done. It has been sitting awhile and may just be corroded. My friend took a photo of your table at Chickasha this year but I can't make out all the numbers of your phone. Larry Reeg I'm on VFF and Ford Barn.
I was not at chickasaw, but I was at Luray. I'm ndnchf on VFF and fordbarn. Send me a PM there to discuss your cutout.
@@steveblancard5566 I'll message you there, thanks.
thank you for sharing this
Very cool.
Pre RUclips I found a paper online detailing converting Low-wall 1885 .32 Rimfire to centerfire. It worked well. I rented the tools and converted to 32-20. Luckily RUclips wasn't around to tell me not to do it. Maybe you know the author of the paper. Written in the 1930's as I recall. I had a 45-70 rolling block Remington rifle 45-70 Shortened to the length of a 1894 Carbine for saddle scabbard use. Added a cheekpiece later. The rolling blocks are fun. I see several guys using green loctite to secure the threaded screw in the rimfire hole before drilling a centerfire hole. I used solder as suggested in the paper. The trick is carbide bits for the case hardened block. You don't want to heat the block enough to disturb the loctite or solder ..or affect the heat treatment. Thanks. I found a source for multiple re-sharpened carbide bits at a reasoble price and only broke three of them. :)
I inherited one of these from my father never fired it never could get amo
I have one of these I need a lever and butt stock if you hear of anything even a pattern
Check out the ASSRA online forum. Its all about old single shots.
Thank you very much, I just got a new armature for my truck and didn't do it right the first time and drained my battery instead of charging it
Another nice video. If I want to unhook the 3 wires on the output side of the cutout for some reason, say electrical troubleshooting, and I want to run the engine, which wire should be grounded temporarily? The red???? And what is happening inside the generator that makes this work, how is this protecting the generator?
You want to ground the output terminal of the generator, not the removed wires. If you don't, the only path to ground inside the generator is through the field windings. This would be excessive and could burn them up.
How much are these worth in 55 60% condition
