  • In this video I discuss the evolution of the #2 sporting rifle and the evolution of its features. These rifles were made over a 41 year period. This is my attempt to tell their story.

Steve, just came across this video. I inherited a #2 about 15 years ago. The patent markings are on the side of the receiver, it has the ebony insert, is drilled for the tang sight, has "Remington Arms..." stamped on the barrel, and has "22" for the caliber stamp, which I assume to be .22 Long (or Long Rifle). The serial number is 24,5xx and it is in very good shape. Oh, and it looks to be a nickel butt plate. I think at one point in it's life it was refinished, but that would have been more than 50 years ago as that's how long ago my dad got it from his father-in-law (mom's dad). I do not know when, or how, my grandfather acquired it. Thanks for the video!

Steve , Xlnt show . Shooting all of your rifles in the original calibre is the way to keep value in these beauties , there is always some one who wants to re-barrel so they can shoot an easier cartridge to buy . I shoot all my guns (Stevens) be it .25 Stevens rf or .32rf , not 10 shot groups tho , enough to keep interested. I use my Annies & Coopers in .22lr & .17 HMR for the all afternoon shoot. ... skwerl

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. As you can tell by my 60 antique firearms videos, I like the challenge of getting the long fogotten guns shooting again.

Good job, Steve! Thanks for sharing. I sold mine, and I kind of wish I didn't. Sweet rifles!

So I was wondering if you had an opinion on whether to modify the original block to centerfire, or acquire a separate CF block. I am reaming to 32 SW Long, so the original block wouldn't do me much good i suppose.

I have a couple #2s that have been converted to centerfire. Unless it is a mint condition rifle, then I think it enhances its value. So yes, I'd just convert the block you have.

Hi Steve, and thank you for sharing your comprehensive research with us. My number 2 is 27,0xx so if you didn't record it please let me know. Did they all have the same butt-plates ?

Hi Doc. I don't recall if I have yours in my research. Please email the full serial number and I'll check. To the best of my knowledge, all standard rifles used the same case colored buttplates. But I've seen seen special order nickel and schuetzen buttplates too.
