I have a 742 BDL chambered in 30-06 just like that one. Mine did not have any problem cycling the action but it was extremely inaccurate. I went online and tried to find a wrench to take the barrel off and see if I could do anything with it, I could not get ahold of a wrench, everyone was out of stock. So finally I broke down and I made a wrench, I started with a cheap three-quarter inch open-end wrench and using a thin wheel cut out the opening until it slid over the nut, then I cut most of the ears off of the open end of the wrench so that it would fit between the action bars, then I welded a washer across one side of the opening so that way the ends couldn't spread apart. This tool works great. I found that the barrel nut was barely tight, and after disassembling, cleaning, and greasing; I put it all back together and tighten the nut properly after applying lock tight to the threads. Now it gets 1.5 inch groups at 100 yards with factory loaded ammo, I'm more than satisfied with.
Sir, This is the best video I haver ever seen on the 742-7400 series rifles. My father and granfather loved these guns despite their reputation for jamming. Im a firm believer that was due to lack of maintence such as cleaning the lug recesses, the lug, and keeping the gas port clean in conjuction with the use of grease as you stated. i believe upon purchase these guns came with a chamber brush so you could clean out the lug recesses. Great Video Sir!! Chris
I thank you Christopher for the compliment, I’m glad you liked it these are great guns when they’re cared for properly that’s for sure, have a great day keep your powder dry pard
The overalls, mustache and beard remind me of me. Thanks for the video. My nephew brought me a 742 that needs to be cleaned. I lost all my gun books in a house fire, along with 35 firearms, and many thousands of rounds of ammunition. Once again thanks for the video.
Hey thanks MaturePatriot for the kind words, and sorry to hear of the fires of misfortune that you have had to contend with. Hopefully the 742 will clean up nice and provide you with a new path to set foot upon in the recovery and replacement of former glories. Best wishes in the coming new year as well. And we both know this, there just ain't any handier way for a guy to dress than with a good pair of "over-hauls" Right!!
My wife got her father's who passed. (Good man) I remember my Dad having one, but growing up I never fired, or hunted with it. Dad always had me using the Browning bar, or a 30-30. Now I am not a regular weapon guy, spent many years in the service as a heavy weapons specialist, but when I cracked open her Dad's wood master... I thought someone needed to smack the engineer. Don't get me wrong, it's a great shooter, and ran very well at the range. Kicked like a mule to. The old trigger felt good and the way it cycled was solid. Most definitely made to use controlled shots, not crazy rapid fire. It was the break down and clean up the carbon mess part that sucked... I have much to learn about this weapon and enjoyed your video. I agree fully with using Greesie because of the weapons heavy function and smaller bolt. I'm guessing the Browning my Dad made me carry back in the day was Remington's competition in the gas operated hunting rifles? Once I get to know this weapon better I plan to shot them side by side and have 30-06 shoulder fatigue. But it will be nice to see my kids fire their grandpa's hunting rifles and maybe, just maybe I'll allow them to fire mine...which I doubt because they'll bang my scope or something. LoL
i agree for sure on the system needing to use grease. With the design of the locking lugs and the top of the bolt carrier's surface mating in the top of the receiver. Without it, those surfaces can get chewed up right smart in a relatively short amount of time I'm sure. I've owned BARs in .308 and 7mm mag. Could sure tell the difference in the recoil impulse of the weapons. Thanks for stopping in to drop the comment, hope the handed down legacy runs great for you and your kids and grandkids for many years to come.
I inherited a lightly used 742 Woodsmaster chambered in 308. I cleaned out 40 years worth of junk, lubed it and greased the action. It’s slick now. I mounted a new Vortex 2x7 scope and I can’t wait to get it out in the woods next deer season.
The one I have came from an OLD man, Back in the day, 60's-70's, we kept em in the back window on the gun rack.. They got beat up pretty good.. From what I was told, that gun took a lot of deer!! Thank You for the break down!!
I've had one for over 50 years and it's still a great shooting 30-06. I've run everything through it that there is over the years. Yes, taking it apart is a pain including barrel removal but it can be done if the bolt needs to be removed and cleaned.
You must have been a Marine I am and I've heard "stand by" many thousand times. A great video I have owned several 742's and a coupl e 7400's They all shot accurately and cycled perfectly because I did what you just did.
I have an early 80s model. I am the original owner as my grandfather bought it for me when I was in grade school. It's lightly hunted with barely any chatter marks. Nearly mint. I shoot light loads to keep from hammering the receiver too hard. It likes 125 grain bullets with the powder charge on the lowest end, no cycle problems.
You made an excellent video on the 742. I have three I work on, mine, my sons, and a friends. I did buy the original barrel wrench, better to have it than not. I use Lucas Red and Tacky grease found at the auto parts store. I would be happy after 3 shots like that.
I had a chance to buy a cherry one from a friend years back. I still kick myself in the butt for not going out and borrowing to buy it. Great gun. Ah to have one in 270, never seen one up here
Thumb up on ur Remington. I use a 742 in .243...Now... Dropped me a fat souw in the Santee swamp last week and I hoped a like minded fellow would allow me a little bragging rights.
Thanks for sharing this video. I have owned a 742 BDL in 30-06 for about 40 years. My in-laws turned me onto that fine weapon. I love the older Remington's, I have the 742, 760 and 700 all in the BDL grade and I have the 700 ADL with a synthetic stock. The BDL 700 is the pre-74 model where you have to put the safety on fire to open the bolt. But I have no problem with that, I know my firearm safety and never to point the barrel towards something I don't intend to shoot. I just did a video on my 742 a few days ago, I had a few subscribers that wanted to know what I use to hunt with, so I did the video. Again, thanks for sharing your wealth of information about this great firearm. Juddie - J & J TOA
Excellent video sir. Very informative. It's plain to see that You are very experienced with this particular firearm and I would imagine many others. I'm having a problem with my woods master and would appreciate it if I could somehow message you directly to explain The problem I am having with my weapon. Thanks again for the great video. And all the great advice as well. I really enjoy listening to someone who knows what the hell they're talking about , you know, guys like you!! There's no substitute for experience.
Good video and info. I have mine and my dad's. They haven't been dismantled to the amount you did. I heard about the wear in the receiver and thought maybe grease? The two I have don't look worn so maybe I'm not too late. We used to use we 40 and my brothers started to have problems. Gunsmith said if you ever put wd 40 in another semi auto don't bring it to me. With radical temp changes it gums up. Thank you for this info. Funny how some of these people are criticising you and they are wrong. Not uncommon. People should slow down and do a little research. I've found that's too much work for most know it all's.
i just found one of these at my favorite pawn place. its clean with very little wear on the lugs. i put a little grease in the spots you specified. just a smear on the contact points. it shot like a dream. cant wait to take it black bear hunting in the catskills in NY in due time.
Stacked up a ton of venison with this same one, from age 11 till I turned 18 😝, deadly accurate , used to peel open soda cans at 200 yards no problem, started ripping rims off cases tho 🤔 anyhow great job 👍 much appreciated ✌️
Thanks for the video Brad. Have my father in laws that's been in the safe for a number of years. Going to pull it out and clean it up nice and get it after deer and elk this year.
Thank you for the video. I don't get mine out enough to remember that the bolt has to be closed to get the mag out. Good video. I plan on checking my Remington 760 to see if that barrel bolt is loose. It seems to wander all over the place.
Really Good video and information. I needed this video. My Rem.742 30-06 made in 1968 or so has an issue locking up when the action is closed. I can't figure out if the rotary in the bolt is not activating soon enough or if the lugs are binding. The trigger group assy. has been removed, guide rod has not been removed. Yet. The proper barrel nut wrench, I do not have. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. This was My grandfathers before I inherated it 1999. I've been using this since 1973. My 9th grade in HS, every deer season until about 2016 when I changed to a bolt action. It may go to a gunsmith after the Holidays, I'm on the fence with that... Again, GREAT VIDEO, Very Enjoyable and informative. Thank You Very Much. JM - Central TX
Great take down video ! it helped me a ton with a 740. Have you ever see the for end screw torque level causing the group to change ? The one I shot seems to be really sensitive to the torque (looser make the gun shoot all over the map)
@@toddr5732 thanks for the compliment! Never shot one to compare grouping as regards the forearm screw tension differential, but it seems plausible it could happen especially if the barrel locking nut was not tight. Might be something to consider checking if can find a gunsmith with the special tool required for manipulating it
I'm kind of wondering why you did'nt mention the gas block checkball, you remove the allen bolt in the gas block and there is a checkball in there, then you will see a small port, that is the gas port, you need to make sure the check ball isnt stuck and i use a torch tip cleaner to clean that port, brake clean, carb cleaner etc. reassemble enjoy.
Mornin steven and thanks for dropping the comment, that's good information to know, and to answer your question, quite honestly, in my videos like this one, I may make mention of things that are not exposed in sequences of the steps I'm taking, but most times I don't. And as far as my relatable experience is concerned, I've never had the occasion where I needed to go that far in disassembly of the block. Always just gave it a few good blasts of non-chlorine brake cleaner up the nozzle of the tube and that always worked just fine for me. So in all actuality, I've never had occasion to observe the inside of the block and what components may lay inside. But thanks again for the additional information, hope everyone can benefit from it. Have a great day and again, thanks for stopping by and dropping the comment!
Greetings, watching your video you removed the rod and spring. What is the reason for doing so? Is there a maintenance portion that needs to be performed? or were you demonstrating how to do this if you needed to remove the nut to remove the barrel? Standing by, thanks!
@@alberta12 thank you for watching, and basically yes, just to demonstrate how it is done in case there is an operational issue with the recoil system that might need to be checked, but it is certainly not a part of every day maintenance. Thank you for your question!
I bought one new in around 86 30 06 semi auto jammed more times than it worked properly. Many times I had to take the radio antenna of my truck a d shove it down the barrel to get the spent shell out. Never trusted it, bought a 7mm bolt action Parker Hale to replace it
great video thank you for your time. I just got me a 742 that I need to teardown and clean and lube and range test.. My uncle used to have one many moons ago and he seemed to like it. By the way.. how is the recoil? I used to have a bolt action model 810 and after about 8 shots it would turn my shoulder black and blue... it had a thin hard rubber recoil pads. I am reckoning that the semi auto will be a bit softer. Looks like it did not phase you a bit.
I have the same rifle with the plain stock. When I shoot it, gas escapes from the left side of the fore end. It’s enough to put a powder burn on your finger if you are gripping the stock in that area. I wonder if that gas tube is damaged. I think I will tear it down and check it. Thanks for the video.
Yeah you might check that. It might just be that there is a lot of foul and crud buildup in that chamber the gas pipe protrudes into that may be causing your issue
…. a few years back I experienced a ca$h crunch & had to choose between a pre 64 Winchester model 100 in 308 Win and a Remington 742 in 30-06 Sprng … I chose the model 100 … it was more accurate, much more dependable and a lot purtier
This rifle 742 to 7400 . It has head space, ejection and magazine issues no matter how clean. The 7600 pump is a good rifle. The others 800 shot throw aways.
I have one that the ejector has failed , my gunsmith says this is a common problem with the 742. It has been my go to deer rifle for a long time. Has anyone come up with a fix for this yet?
Well like I said in the video, this weapon does not belong to me but all of the 742 woodsmasters that I’ve ever encountered regardless of configuration as far as my memory serves they all had the basic sporter profile barrel some may have been longer or shorter depending on ADL BDL or CDL configurations but I don’t think I ever saw one that was purposely built with a heavier barrel
What brought me here was my wife's plastic dust cover on her 6mm rem was broke. And caused a couple jams. I was able to break it up and pull it out. Do I need to remove the bolt to replace the dust cover. I was able to find a new one. Please help?
Not absolutely sure if you would have to, but then I've never had to do that on one either. Might keep checking out other videos to see if there is one specifically on that. I would think it would make it easier to do and help prevent any damage to the replacement, but that's just how I would think to do it. Would also give you the chance to make sure there are no pieces remaining in the action that might prove to be troublesome. ruclips.net/video/fJbzjZ2PIzE/видео.html
You don’t need to remove the bolt. Remove bolt handle (1 pin). Remove trigger assembly (2 pins). Drop new cover in and slide forward, then reinstall handle and trigger assembly. Takes 10 minutes unless you have issues with the handle pin.
The only gun I've owned in 40 years that grouped so terribly I refused to hunt with it. It was consistent in bad groups and jamming 1 out of 5 shots. Had a reputable gunsmith check it over. Nothing can be done to remedy it. Dont waste your money. After 15 boxes of 30-06 ammo, I gave up.
My preferred gun grease is the Lucas Oil Extreme Duty Gun Grease, it's hard to beat it for sure. And you can find it in a lot of places that carry their automotive products, like parts stores.
it is a right handed weapon, front to back, ain't no left hand anything on it. I'm not using reverse imaging, I never shot video in reverse imaging, I don't know what's making you think that.
My uncle had one of these and he was left handed. He had a left handed BDL stock installed with the cheek riser on the right side of the stock. Right hand ejection. The weapon that is in this video is a right hand stock.

By the way.. how is the recoil? I used to have a bolt action model 810 and after about 8 shots it would turn my shoulder black and blue... it had a thin hard rubber recoil pads. I am reckoning that the semi auto will be a bit softer. Looks like it did not phase you a bit.
Recoil is semi-light, not bone crusher at all
Great video sir
Thank you!
Why do so few rifles come with iron sights today? Even a lot of brush guns.
... the 7400 with 4 bolt lugs instead of 9 & strengthened receiver is a stronger gun than the 742
…. a few years back I experienced a ca$h crunch & had to choose between a pre 64 Winchester model 100 in 308 Win and a Remington 742 in 30-06 Sprng … I chose the model 100 … it was more accurate, much more dependable and a lot purtier
Just purchased one of these manufactured in 1977. Thanks for the great video. Do you lightly oil the guide rod/spring assembly?
YEP, just a light coat, don't take much for sure.
I use dry lube. 3 in 1 makes lock lube. It's dry lube. Has no film. And doesn't collect debris or powder fouling.
Great video
Thanks! I had a fun time making that one.
This rifle 742 to 7400 . It has head space, ejection and magazine issues no matter how clean. The 7600 pump is a good rifle. The others 800 shot throw aways.
for a hunting rifle to obtain 800 fired rounds...that's a lifetime!
Hello Brad, which year would you put a 742 with a serial # of 7500070. Thank you
I have one that the ejector has failed , my gunsmith says this is a common problem with the 742. It has been my go to deer rifle for a long time. Has anyone come up with a fix for this yet?
Replacements are out there, it's the same as the old 700. Did he try polishing the chamber first?
Is it just me or does the BDL model (ie the version you have) have a heavier profile barrel than the ADL?
Well like I said in the video, this weapon does not belong to me but all of the 742 woodsmasters that I’ve ever encountered regardless of configuration as far as my memory serves they all had the basic sporter profile barrel some may have been longer or shorter depending on ADL BDL or CDL configurations but I don’t think I ever saw one that was purposely built with a heavier barrel
I know for certain that the fore stocks are designed differently between the two!
What Brand / Type of grease do you recommend ?
I like the Lucas Extreme gun grease
which round and grain you favor for the 742 after all these years?
At least now you have a couple comments Brad! Cheers
Need to add installation of the Spring guard
What causes my cartridge to not eject all of the way out? It keep hanging up about half the way out of the gun?
Same problem with mine.
Take trigger group out and clean the hole and spring shroud on the hammer spring.. put a thin coat of oil on it and go.
Thanks for sharing..
Stand corrected Brad, been misreading for many years!

You don’t need to remove the bolt. Remove bolt handle (1 pin). Remove trigger assembly (2 pins). Drop new cover in and slide forward, then reinstall handle and trigger assembly. Takes 10 minutes unless you have issues with the handle pin.
What kind of grease you recommend
I use Lucas oil, extreme duty gun grease never had an issue with it
The only gun I've owned in 40 years that grouped so terribly I refused to hunt with it. It was consistent in bad groups and jamming 1 out of 5 shots. Had a reputable gunsmith check it over. Nothing can be done to remedy it. Dont waste your money. After 15 boxes of 30-06 ammo, I gave up.
that is too bad about your gun and I hate to know that someone had to go through that hassle!...around 1.4 million were produced in total.
I have that exact gun....dead shot every time...keep it clean and breath.
What brand of grease do you recommend?
My preferred gun grease is the Lucas Oil Extreme Duty Gun Grease, it's hard to beat it for sure. And you can find it in a lot of places that carry their automotive products, like parts stores.
What grease do you use?
Lucas Extreme Duty Gun Grease
I dont know if your shooting video backwards. So thats a 742 30.06 left hand stock right hand action.
it is a right handed weapon, front to back, ain't no left hand anything on it. I'm not using reverse imaging, I never shot video in reverse imaging, I don't know what's making you think that.
My uncle had one of these and he was left handed. He had a left handed BDL stock installed with the cheek riser on the right side of the stock. Right hand ejection.
The weapon that is in this video is a right hand stock.
stand by 😄
I love the rifle well you like to sale the rifle
Browning BAR is a much better rifle.
Cut that barrel back to 18 inches, a carbine.
What kind of grease is recommended for the action?
